Do forget that in 2012 block wedges were introduced, and suits have a large impact. Not sure “clean water” is a thing in a 50 free. Surface waves do not travel that fast and if clean water was a big factor why could Dresel not break the WR in 50m SC?
I've wondered about this, and I agree with your conclusions about which meets and competitive fields lend themselves to faster swims. Thanks for the stroke counts. Do you know Dressel's vs Crooks's start response times? Some records are shattered when all the variable pieces work about as well as they possibly can on that particular day, like Bob Beamon's long jump. 17.63 probably doesn't compare to that, but I agree it'll last awhile.
Crooks was .59 at SECs this year (17.99) and .57 at NCAAs (18.09) there doesn’t seem to be data for his 17.93. Dressel was .63 on all three of his 2018 swims.
Yep you’re right! I should have specified I was just looking at events contested at the NCAA championships. I wish we saw more top tier swimmers take a shot at a 1000 at mid season meets like Clark did, I would love to know what Finke could have done since he was 8:34 at the 1000 in his 1650 record swim.
My guess is it will take ~5 years to break Dressel's mark. My best guess is it will be Maxiumus Williamson ('25) to do it. He's already 19.4/41.8/1:31.3 freestyler as a junior in HS. The kid has incredible speed and he isn't even in college yet. I don't think Crooks or Liendo will be able to improve quickly enough to cover the remaining half second to break Dressel's mark. But if the record does fall in the next two years, it'll almost assuredly be either of them. Or maybe it'll be some whose still an unknown.
Well that’s one hell of a slip up by me during that line read. I even had Jack written in my script so IDK what I was doing there. My deepest apologies to Mr. Conger
Dressel is Faster UNDERWATER ! Real Real hard to do. This is why his record might not be broken Also, the NCAA may now limit the distance swimmers can swim underwater in this event. So this also may be a reason Dressel's 50 yard free will not be broken
Everyone is faster underwater - pushing off an immovable object (the wall) and sustaining that momentum is always faster than swimming on the surface - for a limited distance. Pushing off the block (diving) and gliding through the air (a less dense fluid) is faster yet. In terms of peak velocity, the dive is the fastest component of the race, followed by the push off after a turn, followed, by the actual swimming, followed by the turn.
Sub 21 in 1964 is absolutely amazing. Pools were shallow as heck blocks were laughable suits were baggy no underwater. Hand timers ect
hand timers have a chance to help but yeah I completely agree
Agreed. The blocks especially were awful.
The simple answer is yes. But, what is really the human limit???
Wow dude! This is great swimming content you do a lot of research as well. This deserves way more views and subs keep up the great work!
Agreed! Love the timeline and pacing. Keep it up!
6:46 Behind JOSH Conger's 200 fly?? Put some RESPECK on his name! It's JACK!
Who cares? He and Lochte went on a drunken crime spree in Rio and tarnished the reputation of the US. John got cancelled a long time ago 😂
Awesome video, keep em coming. I’d watch one of these about any event but men’s 100 fly and 200 free would be near the top of my wish list.
Hey man this is really good swimming content! I hope i can see u make it further on this platform!
Wow I’ve never really been interested in swimming, this is changing my perspective 👍
awesome analysis man! This is just what the swimming world is missing

Small mistake Clark Smith still has the oldest NCAA record in the 1000 in 8:33.93

Took me over 5 minutes to realize this is David 😂 killer content again!
Haha thanks Abe!

maximus will swim 2im instead
Wow! I didn't realise swimming races in yards was still a thing.
Back in the 70s Joe Bottom swam a 19.70. It was not broken for a while.
17.63 is crazy fast but someone in the future will beat it.
This is a very good video along with the others you have made plz keep it up swimscribe
Caesar Cielo's PR was 18.47
Josh Conger 😭

No they won’t lmao stop lying
“may now limit” 😭😭😂bro he was limited to 15 yards underwater during his races
what are you talking about

Here it's the first comment to introduce Léon Marchand name, a matter with the french magic winner???
1:59 that’s the worst pronunciation of “synonymous” I’ve ever heard.
