Saber-toothed tigers, also known as smilodons roamed north and south America for quite some time, along with wooly mammoths. According to fossil evidence, they have been present for 1.8 million years ago. But around 12 thousand years ago, during the Quaternary extinction, The saber-toothed tiger went extinct along with many other animals present during the ice age. But what if saber-toothed tigers had managed to survive the mass extinction that took place at the end of the ice age, and had lived on until modern day? The Saber Tooth Cats would have evolved. They're large teeth would have become stronger and they're tails would have become longer. They're lower jaws would have been thicker. They would have mated with Lions and Tigers. They're children would look like Tigers and Lions and other wild cats.

On the contrary, long teeth seem to be a convergent evolution for many different 'cat-like' species, the most famous being Thylacosmilus, a marsupial, which points to longer teeth being an advantage if anything. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if modern big cats also eventually got long teeth like that of the saber tooths in a few millennia(if they don't go extinct by then that is).

I'm not entirely sure I agree with the canines being ineffective, I mean if they have been around for 1,8 mill years, they have to have been somewhat sucessful.
Their survivability was not to the credit of these oversized canines though. They were more of a liability and they could have survived with smaller canines as well. They worked enough to keep the species alive for long time but weren't ideal for maintaining long term longevity, especially compared with the canines of other cats.
this is wrong actually. scientist said that they're using their canines to kill their prey like biting the neck with that teeth and killing them. this is from a legit source.

Smilodons did not weigh 440 lb. The largest species weighed around 220 - 400/470kg. Also smilodons did not wait for their prey to bleed to death they stabbed their fangs in the jugular of their prey killing it instantly.

First of all smilodon grew up to 9 feet long not 5 feet. Second of all there saber teeth for which they are named were far to large to have been able to eat a human as we were far to skinny for them to fit us into there jaws. They where build for killing large prey such as mastodon, mammoth, prehistoric bison, giant three toed sloth or Megatherium.

Wrong! They are not really related to any other modern cats today. The branch that split off to make lions, tigers, cougars, cats, and etc. is all under one same tree. The tree's name is panthera. Smilodons were part of a separate family tree of cats. (They apparently DIDN'T BOTHER NAMING THIS. I don't know why.) When the panthera family tree came into existence smilodon was already separate from them. Think of smilodon being like what you might get if Neanderthals kept evolving into various other species over time to eventually become a smilodon, while humans did the same and become the various modern cats. I had to fact check this before making this comment. I checked wiki and glanced a little on google. What was stated clearly is they are not related to any modern cat species. They are related to these modern felines, but they are not closely related to any of them to be like a cousin to a lion. They branched off to earlier to be that close. I hope this helps understanding it. Yes. I know. It's hard for me to understand too.
