I am also a kosovar rufai by family but never practiced it. I never knew that and i am really impressed.

I love the Moroccan, Palestinian, Maghreb and North African representation on the comments section of this video. There is so much diversity and specific groups of people who practice this Islamic tradition in the Shadhili Tariqa. Great to see all the lovely comments, and thanks for spreading awareness of Shadhili order group in the video and through the comments.

It would be great to see a video about Islam in Caucasus from you! It is a very interesting topic to which Sufism (although generally superficially understood) is the most important element.
I would also be very interested in this. If you know any reading or videos about this please share them.
Yes! I second that. The role of Islam in general and Sufism more specifically, for Circassians (people of the Caucasus) is an interesting one, both sad & liberating.

I live in Algeria, we have a story/joke been told by old people here:
in old times, an old Sofi shaikh start to get lazy and couldn't wake up every morning for early prayer,
when later quesented by his pupils why he's not attending morning "Fajr" prayer and "Imam" them in the "Salat",
to evade criticism and embarrassment he told them: " I woke up early morning and pray to God to shape me alike dove so I can fly to "Maka", I pray there and come back before you younglings woke up".
Lol that reminds me of a sheykh back in my country who gave me my name btw. There is this same story about him as well but I don't know if it's true.
Hhhhh I've never heard that one where in Algeria?
"He was a teacher but didn't really produced anything written material for us to study".
Abul Hasan Shadili said, "My books are my disciples".
In fact his disciples did wrote amazing books and thus fulfilling his prophecy.

There in Shazliya (Al-Sama`a) During the common remembrances, especially in the largest Shadhili curriculum, which is the Darqawi method, from which most of the Shadhili methods branched off, and among the most important of them are Sheikh Al-Alawi Al-Jaza’iri and Sheikh Muhammad Al-Hashemi, Sheikh of Shazlyah Al-Sham.
From the Hashemite way, the Shaghouri method appeared, and it is from the method of Al-Ishraq Al-Suhrawardi
I never ever thought I’d see a westerner ever talking about the Shadhillya such eloquently! Wow! Allah hu Akbar
MashaAllah beautiful documentary.
Thanks for this rich information about the Shathlyeah
I have a few clarifications:
1- I would argue that the Shadhilli order is not only the largest order in North Africa, but in all of the Arab world. While there are certainly other orders in the Levant, based on my personal experience of engaging with these orders, I believe the Shadhilis are the most numerous by a fair margin, followed by Rifais and Qadiris. In the Gulf and Yemen, the Ba Alawi order is the largest, followed by Shadhilis and Rifais, while in Iraq Rifais and Qadiris are the most numerous. Nevertheless, between North Africa, Egypt, and the Levant, I believe that the Shadhili order is the largest.
2- While it's true that the Shadhili order is "sober" compared to the ones you mentioned + the Chishtis, the Naqshbandis, Ba Alawis, and some Qadiri orders are far more "sober" since they don't do the Hadhra dancing dhikr--which is not considered a "sober" practice by those paths or most non-Sufi Muslims. The Alawi-Shadhili orders, and some others, also have ritual seclusion (khalwa) practices that some orders would not consider "sober." Finally, Shadhili himself called his path a path of gratitude (shukr) rather than a path of patience (sabr) in that there is more focus on "seeing Allah in everything, before everything, with everything, after everything, at all times" and being joyful and grateful in that realization and remembrance than on asceticism, which is/was a big part of other paths and is a hallmark of more "sober" paths. I think the Shadhilis strike a good balance.
Also, the other measure of "sobriety," is in publicly showing one's intoxication/ ecstatic union with God, Shadhilis generally advised and taught to hide it and be "normal" in society, externally, while being in that state internally. Some other tariqas are find with their dervishes being internally and externally in such states and don't teach them how to properly integrate the two states.
3- I think it mainly spread in the West because of the figures you mentioned, which made it more accessible. A further figure I would also mention is Al-Alawi's contemporary, Muhammad Ibn Al-Habib Al-Buzaidi, and the orders that spread from his followers like the controversial Murabitun (followers of Ian Dallas / Abdul Qadir Al-Sufi), the Bewleys / Habibiya, and contemporary author, Michael Sugich--whose most recent 2 books have been popular.
4- Other than his Hizb Al-Bahr litany, there are several other litanies that he wrote and which some Shadhili paths still read today like his Hizb Al-Kabeer, Hizb An-Nur, and Hizb An-Nasr. Ibn Ata'illah mentions these and many of Al-Shadhilis words of wisdom and guidance in his biography of Al-Shadhili and his other works. The Shadhili Order litany book that Sh. Nuh Keller prepared and translated has these and other main litanies in it, as well, and should be accessible.
5- One of the hadhras you showed had people swinging side to side, that's not a Shadhili hadra. It's most likely a Rifai one. Shadhili Hadras are usually a bit more controlled than those of the Rifais and tend to be either up and down or back and forth bending.
Thx for elaborating
thank you for taking the time to share this! Baraka Allahou fik
Thank you forbid this important lecture

I know a few Shadhulis that don't know this much about their order. Thank you for this contribution.

Very informative and enlightening video. Just one observation/correction. You mention Hizb al-Bahr being the most notable litany produced by al-Imām Abū al-Hasan al-Shādilī. Rather, his Hizb al-Nasr (Litany for Victory) is perhaps more widely known and recited in the Muslim world.

The Sufi ascetic mystic spiritual masters who had the greatest influence on western tradition of Sufism were Abul Abbas al Mursi, Abul Hasan ash Shadhili and Ibnu Ataillah as Sakandari. The Sufi ascetic mystic spiritual masters who had the greatest influence on eastern tradition of Sufism were Abdul Qadir al Jaylani, Abu Hamid al Ghazali, Abdul Karim al Jaylani, Ahmad ar Rifaii, Shah Naqshband, Ahmad as Sarhandi and Muiinuddin al Jishti.
The Shadhiliyya Sufi Order is one of the most famous western islamic Traditions of North Africa with European western islamic especially Andalusian Origins because the famous Sufi ascetic monk Abul Abbas al Mursi (from Mursiyya/ Marseille in Andalusia) was the spiritual master of the Shadhiliyya Master and Monk Ibnu Ataillah as Sakandari (as Sakandari/from Alexandria) ash Shadhili.
Therefore we can see some similarities between the Shadhiliyya mystic order and Jewish European Western especially Andalusian mystic orders and even between them and some Christian Catholic Western European mystic orders like the Franciscan Order.
On the other side we can see the influences of Eastern Asian mystic tendencies of Eastern and Asian Jewish, Eastern and Asian Christian Catholic and Orthodoxian, Asian Zoroastrian, Asian Manichaeistic, Asian Buddhist, Asian Hinduistic and other Eastern mystic tendencies on the Eastern and Asian Sufi ascetic mystic orders of Islam like the Naqshbandiyyah, Rifaiyyah, Bektaşi, Qadiriyyah, Jishtiyyah and other similar Orders.
In general we can see even far from all this the similar way of life between north African and western European and the similar way of life between Turkey and Eastern European and the similar way of life between Turkey, Iran, India, China, Korea, Japan and the East in general.
It's really interesting to watch all this and to discover similarities and differences between cultures and Civilizations, therefore we can say that the Western Civilizations (Western and Central Europe and North Africa) are Roman Latin Greek Hellenic Phoenician Germanic Celtic Etruscan Tamazighian Cultures and that the Middle Civilizations (Turkey, Caucasian and Eastern Europe) are Greek Hellenic European Asian Persian Turkic Slavic Caucasian Cultures and that the Eastern Civilizations (Iran, Afghanistan, the Turkic and Tatar Regions, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and the greatest rest of Russia and the rest of Asia) are Asian Indian Persian Greek Hellenic Turkic Mongolian Tatar Caucasian Chinese Japanese Korean Thai Malayo-Polynesian and Indo Chinese Cultures.
It's really interesting to make such great Theories about the East, West and the Middle.
The host got the Sufi sobriety concept like of wrong. Sobriety is going through ecstatic states that neither the practitioner nor other people will see them go into a trance state. In other words no one will see the person go into any spiritual states or stations. Whereas the intoxicating tariqat, people may see the person to be in a trancelike state or to behave unusual, even the practitioner may notice themselves go into a state or not at all.
@Dani Al yes, why?
