    The Origins of Follow Me
Tony Vassallo spent the better part of 30 years being morbidly obese. His top weight was just over 300 pounds which occurred when he was 37 years of age. After losing 130 pounds in 2010 he wondered if he would be just another statistic who would regain the weight? Determined to keep the weight off, Tony embarked on a journey to learn everything he could about weight loss, nutrition and food addiction. This yearning to learn more allowed Tony to leave a 15 year career in information technology to pursue a career helping others towards sustained weight loss.
In May of 2016, The New York Times published a story “After The Biggest Loser,’ Their Bodies Fought to Regain Weight” which received a great deal of attention. Tony was deeply frustrated by the story for many reasons. He felt the story implied that weight loss is impossible and therefore a waste of time, while Tony knew from his own experiences that it could be done. Around the same time, a client of Tony’s and co-producer of the film, Jason Donville also became fascinated with the idea that a small segment of the population appeared to have succeeded with permanent weight loss.
What is it about this group of that allowed them to succeed in losing their excess weight and keeping it off? Tony knew there were many others who had achieved what he had achieved and he had his own theories based on his own personal experience as to why they had succeeded. But Tony had met very few of them in person. Thus, the film “Follow Me” is Tony’s journey to meet, listen to and understand others who have succeeded at sustained weight loss. The objective of the film is therefore to allow others that struggle with weight and related illnesses tied to obesity to hear various points of view from those that lived a similar experience. The film is also about hope.
The journey “Follow Me” had producer Tony Vassallo meet 15 diverse people from across Canada and the United States. The 15 included medical doctors, students, business professionals, writers, tradesmen, a university professor, a counsellor, a culinary professional, and even a psychotherapist. Tony was accompanied on his journey by first time Film Director Nicholas Li, who does an extraordinary job of capturing the visual beauty of the places Tony visited on the journey while also amalgamating all these incredible messages of hope into an entertaining and thought provoking look at sustained weight loss.

Absolutely agree with the lady who said I can't moderate sugar. No-one is over eating broccoli, salads or kale! It's the sugar laden foods that keep you wanting more...

Sugar + oil/fats + salt = food addiction. I guarantee no one sits and inhales granulated sugar. Think about foods that are hard to stop eating. They have sugar, fat, and salt.

That is why processed food companies keep adding sugar to their products. Because it is addicting and it keeps their addicts buying more of their products.

Obesity is such an insidious problem to live with...I lost about 160 pounds about 10 years ago and have kept it off (I have fluctuated 20-30 pounds over the course of 2-3 years, which I consider stable). At my top weight I was 315 pounds and 145 pounds at my lowest (currently about 155). This documentary is the most accurate depiction of real weight loss I've ever seen...it is oddly comforting to see others overcame the same exact issues and hurdles that I discovered along the way.
The biggest issue I've had is that there is so much social pressure to make me fail. I'm not saying everyone is out to sabotage me (those people definitely DO exist though), but the "kind" voices of "reason" that have told me that I should enjoy food in "moderation". My father, for example, once accused me of having an eating disorder because I wouldn't have a piece of my birthday cake...he is right, but my disorder is my overeating problem. **Not eating the cake is the solution.** Don't even get me started on what happens if I try to take only a tablespoon of peanut butter...
"Normal" weight people don't understand the horrible addictive power that food can have on us. They've never even thought about stopping for fast food on the way home from Thanksgiving dinner...or kept a variety of menus for take out so that you can order every day (or multiple times a day) without having to call the same place twice. So shameful, and I did it every day for YEARS before I managed to turn things around.
I weigh myself every day to make sure that I'm not slipping. Folks have told me not to do that. Why do they give advice with such confidence when they have no real science to back it up? I exercise daily and enjoy long walks and hikes. I sometimes like to fast...not because I'm trying to lose weight, but because it somehow evens out my cravings. Again, folks are so quick to tell you how to do it...usually they are full of BS and listening to them will actually cause your relapse.
Thanks for making this and posting. I'm really glad that I stumbled on it.

I have noticed lately that I really do feel fuller for longer when I eat things like beans and lentils. If I want to really pig out, I can have a huge salad with some meat in it. It's much easier to stick to a diet of healthy food so long as it is also prepared to be appetizing.

This documentary highlights the very important fact that it's not just about what you eat - it has to be a whole lifestyle reconfiguration. It also points out that there's no single path to a healthy lifestyle, and that there's no single healthy lifestyle.

Exactly. Each person needs to identify what works for them. I tried many things over the years. After being referred to an endocrinologist she recommended Keto for me. 5 years later (2020-2021 I had to deal with cancer), I am down from 352 to 193 (as of today). It is a lifetime change.

I lost 100 pounds with diet and exercise. Kept it off for about 3 years. Then I had a series of severe health crises, a ton of surgeries and went through a really bad divorce... gained about 75 pounds back over about 8 years...

I've lost the weight before, had the wrong motivation.... I've never felt I was worth enough for it to be for me. Thank you being vulnerable. Thank you for showing me the way.
I made the excuse also that I'd be depriving my kids if I didn't buy that stuff. But I was the one eating the majority of it! Now I'm looking at all of us and seeing we are all unhealthy. Since I am the one who buys the food, I get to change it. They won't like it, giving up the 'treats', but we will all feel better. Thank you again!

Interesting. At age 64 I went from 225 to 165 in a bit less than a year, in 2020. All it took was tweaking my routine to gradually decrease food intake while paying attention to the foods I was eating for their nutrients. I found that when I don't eat much my body is sensitized to flavor and EVERYTHING tastes good. I don't need to be bludgeoned by high salt, fat, and sugar in my diet anymore. I still enjoy hamburgers, pizza, etc., just not very often. And key for me is getting on the scale every morning to confirm and feel good about my stable weight.

My hubby could have all kinds of cookies, cakes, pie, etc in the house and only have a bit now and then. Not me I must eat it if it's there.

24:35 what Sandra is saying here is completely true. I had to completely stop eating sweets, biscuits and crisps for several weeks to get a hold on my cravings. Nowadays I NEVER buy snack foods because whenever I did in the past I'd start overeating on them again, no matter how hard I tried to restrain myself. The popular approach of "eating everything in moderation" just doesn't work for some people.

Weight loss, especially long term weight loss, is almost totally a "mind thing". I, too had to learn to really enjoy healthy food and realize that this is my future. And I'm ok with that. Do I miss the food I used to eat? Sure I do. But I DO NOT miss all the other things associated with obesity. Like being tired all the time. Or having illnesses associated with being overweight. Or not being able to enjoy a simple stroll or activity without being totally out of breath. I love that I no longer have those examples as part of my daily life. For the most part I weigh about 120 - 125 lbs, after starting my weight loss journey at 213 lbs. in January of 2014. I look forward to each day of being in a healthy weight range instead of dreading my daily aches, pains, and breathlessness because I'm morbidly obese. Thanks for this video. It makes me realize I am not alone.

Thank you for making this. It's great, hearing people talk about their experiences with sustainable long term weight loss. I am also someone who has been successful at this. It IS possible, but it does take a willingness to commit for the long haul. I had to overhaul my entire life (and deal with an ED), but it was totally worth it. I was in my early 20s, obese, with a unhealthy lifestyle, poor coping mechanisms, and the start of fatty liver disease. Unlike a lot of people, I didn't lose the weight quickly, but I have been successful at keeping it off. I found what works for me, and I made sure that I could do it for the rest of my life. :)

This is one of the best documentaries I've seen about this topic so far. I'm very happy it's not promoting a certain diet or program and it spotlights the core: emotions and behaviour.
What helped me tremendously is reflecting on why and under which circumstances I became sugar addicted, establishing healthy ways to deal with stress, getting rid of a lot of stuffed up emotions, engaging in self love, reflecting on what eating means for me and which needs are underlying and finding better ways (for example social life, being in nature, being with animals etc), getting rid of toxics like toxic relationships, listening to my inside, to my borders and respecting them, respecting ME, respecting my pace, learning how to deal with emotions.
I'm not done yet, I still need to learn more about healthy eating, but until now it feels already much better.
I wish everyone on the way all the best and remember: there's no reason not to love yourself limitlessly.

I lost 100lbs 12 years ago & kept it off. I used to be a meal skipper. Now I eat 5 small meals a day. It revved my metabolism so much, I can eat ice cream in between 3 of those meals. Plus when I do eat something naughty like pizza or french fries, it's always my 2nd or 3rd meal. Never after 6pm. I lost 75lbs the first year & then a pound a week after. Slower weight loss is better for keeping it off & avoiding loose skin.

Thank you so much for this. I can relate to all the stories, I was a thin child that never thought about food until my mom took me for a “check up” when I was 9. The Dr performed a vaginal check and I was so scared, my mother was in the room and I still to this day have no idea why this happened, but the dr also wanted me to walk back and forth in front of him in my underwear. My older sister also was a part of this “check up” who was overweight, Dr Turner told my mother in front of me that she needed to watch my food intake as I could also become overweight. I frieked out and at 10 years old my eating disorder began. I am 54 and it has taken me thru serious anorexia ( my parents were born again Pentecostal christians moving us every year) to bulimia because the prayers and beatings to eat did not work. I was not going to be fat. Well after I had my 3rd child and moved countries to get away from the oppressing biblical guilt for my disease I separated from my abusive husband and had no support at all. I ate and did not care, how I can relate to Susan, the relief of Oh well, last time it didn’t work, and the relief of eating was overpowering. However, I had never been overweight before due to my bulimia, not my healthy lifestyle and during 2004 my mom and stepdad came from America to see the kids and I was 200 pounds. I was miserable, angry and a recluse. I was severely depressed and hardly left my house, my son oldest son was showing signs of wanting to harm himself at school and I took him to counseling, it was an eye opener for me, I realised I need to get myself right. He is a boy smart beyond his years and he felt my pain sadly. So I had lap band surgery and eventually lost weight but the desire to eat never abated. I could turn up for things but eating a rockmelon was difficult as it would get stuck. All the fattening greasy food could go down easily, I relate to Michael where he would sit on the floor waiting for food to pass to eat more, I did that as my shoulders for some reason would hurt from my over indulging, however, after the surgery I could no longer make myself vomit so used laxatives and fasts to not gain weight. What a nightmare.
My 3 kids are amazing, all doing well but I have to admit I still struggle. After watching this I get it! I think I can eat my trigger foods but truthfully I cannot, I am a food addict and there is nothing I would rather do than eat Doritos and watch true crime. My safety zone. Thank you all so much for your stories and knowing food does not have to be our comfort. I have learnt more from this than all the dense counselling I could afford, again thank you.

Excellent, inspiring documentary. It was just what I needed. I'm so tired of the superficiality of most online weight loss stories. All about "look at how much better I look". I really believe that's a smaller part of it, although it feels like the most important part at first. I'm really aiming for that "food serenity" and to open up my life to more than my obsessions. Working on my marriage has helped, too. I had to find a calm and loving center inside myself despite my husband's scolding, ultimatums, and cold shoulders. That was a long journey right there! Now he has found a more calm and loving center inside himself, as well, and I feel like I'm on terra firma to, once again, focus my attention on making changes to my eating habits. Thank you for this wonderful documentary!

Hi, Tony, thank you (and all the others) so much for sharing. That was like making new friends and exchanging adventures on the travel through life. For a long time I was kind of jealous that other people can eat what they want and I can’t without gaining weight, loosing teeth and feeling terrible. I didn’t overdo but it felt like fight and force most of the time. So I changed my view and told me that my body is smart and shows me what’s good for me. One of my talents is making food looking and tasting nice, adding herbs and spices. Now I use my talent to create veggie and fruit bowls and show them to people I’m connected with. They love it. And I go out and explore 'the little things', collecting wild herbs, taking pictures… and I sing and dance and knit a bit. EVERY DAY is the key. Never too old to learn new skills. Soon I’ll be 67. If you think about writing a book about all that, I’d love to order it! Greetings from Germany, Monika❣

Lost 65 lbs to date need to lose 24lbs more. This film was very enlightening. It's no good changing your body if your mind stays the same. In the past after weight loss I found it difficult to adjust to my changing body. I was always the fat and jolly person. I got noticed even if it was for the wrong reasons. Being smaller made me feel invisible. This time I have to find a way to change my mindset.

Thank you for your wonderful video! I can really identify with Susan from Rochester. I lost 63 lbs in 2001 and gradually over the next 10 yrs put it back on. I have lost 30,45 lbs several times. At the beginning of the Pandemic I lost 7 lbs, but by July, when I realized this thing was going to continue for some time, I gave in and starting eating bread and chips again and put on 10 lbs by the year end. At New Years 2021, I devised a new eating plan for myself. Two meals a day. Lunch is a Keto meal and dinner is a Heart to Home portion& calorie control meal and ate only carb free snacks in between. Then would go for 16 hrs to the next days lunch. I lost 30 lbs by July. Then, like Susan, I started to cheat a little. A pizza once in a while, some poutine once in a while, went from bacon rinds to regular chips, and I have now gained back 3 lbs, but live in fear it will become more. 😱 I live alone and stay in sometimes for 4-5 days at a time. I only want to lose another 25-30 more. I have been suffering with pelvic pain for last 8 1/2 yrs. I have started to walk again for exercise. I used to swim for an hr 2-3x per week, but the pools are closed still due to the pandemic. I miss swimming so much! The only way I can get through the evenings, is to keep my hands busy. The first year and crocheted and knit blankets and scarves. This past year I took up cross stitching again. I think watching all your video participants has given me a lot of encouragement to keep going to get that “freedom”! Thank you again for your help! Greetings 🇨🇦

I grew up in the 80's. We mostly ate whole foods, real food whatever you want to call it. We were all healthy weights. Treats were a once in a while thing that wasn't in the house regularly. Slowly junk food creeped in. Somehow we needed treats after every meal. The food industry puts a lot of money into turning chemicals into addictive "food."

I think people are used to thinking this is a early middle age women’s problem and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Going on my second journey after losing 50 pounds and then being in a car accident. Although “it wasn’t bad” ( that’s what everyone else says) it has totally changed my brain and I am no longer the same person. I struggle with grief over who I once was and how far she had come. I have a ton of food I can’t eat because they cause me inflammation. It’s hard and I identified so much with many people on your documentary. Wow. This sure hits home. I started my diet, or changing the way I ate and thought, in September of 2018. I've lost 50 lbs. If anyone out there is considering losing weight, do it! My life is so much better. I feel better, I think better, I'm enjoying food more because I only eat food I absolutely love. Come to find out, the food I really love is not processed or fried or fast. Limiting and watching what I eat is not deprivation. Being overweight and weak was deprivation.

I am just so angry at my husband when he buys a ton of junk food. He thinks if he gets cucumbers and grapes at the store he can also buy pints of ice cream, raw cookie dough, a crate of sugar cookies, iced coffee and soda. When I share my concern with Him he gets defensive and tells me he won't eat it in one sitting. Next day I find a pint of ice cream and 1,000 worth of calories of cookie dough gone! Plus soda and iced coffee! When I talked to him about this he yells at me, "don't nag me, I ha e had a stressful day!" So my reply was okay. So if you are stress eating I shouldn't be concerned?
I know I am approaching this wrong. Possibly doing damage. But I am angry. I hate seeing him out grow his clothes. I hate seeing him lose his strength and stamina. I hate hearing about how he hates his belly.
I know how dangerous visceral body fat is. I have seen overweight cadavers in person and how much fat hids beneath the and is astonishing.
I am scared for him I can fast forward in my mind 10 years into the future and see him at a point of no return. Where getting thinner is no longer just desirable but a must if he wants any quality of life.
I am angry. I am scared. And yes. Quickly turning into that nagging wife.
(Some info about me. 9 years of marriage and 3 kids later plus this one on the way and I have gained maybe 5, possibly 10 pounds since we married. I have not yet let myself go, as it were. Not in that respect. My hang ups are self control with my phone. I am on it waaay too much
And I am very disorganized and moody. So I get it I have things to work in too.)
Obesity is life threatening. I view a box of donuts with a large mocha frappe as I would a box of cigarettes.
    Help.
Anyone who has read this far. Thank you.
How do I approach my husband's dangerous diet habits? Is there anything I can do or say that will make him eat healthier?

    • @Defender2516
      @Defender2516 2 года назад +7

First off, DON'T give him that look when he eats something bad. He is his own adult and he knows he is responsible for his health. Instead, become the woman that is so lovely in his life that he regrets his bad eating habits. And when he does eat something good, give him positive reinforcement. A smile, a compliment, anything that shows approval of his actions and how you like how he is taking control of his life.
The worst thing you can do is literally track him down like the NSA and tell him you found out what he did. You wouldn't want anyone doing that to you, so don't do it to him.

It must be really unfortunate to have a partner who is not supportive or does not have the same health goals as us. Why don’t you try focusing on yourself (as hard as that is with him buying junk food)but just maybe start working out a little bit making healthier choices and maybe if he sees your progress it will motivate him to stop eating so much junk food. I would stop saying anything to him when he brings home junk food and just ignore it, maybe hide that stuff so it doesn’t tempt you but I would stop saying anything to him and just focus on yourself and hopefully eventually he will see how happy and healthy you are and want the same for himself. Worth a shot ? Sometimes actions speak louder than words.

    • @astrieanna
      @astrieanna Год назад +2

I don't think that you can make him change. Rather than you nagging, he has to decide to do things differently for himself. Maybe talking the overall situation through in a calm moment -- when you're both fed, hydrated, rested, and undistracted -- hearing how he feels, sharing how you feel, would help. Maybe he could go to therapy -- to help him sort out what he wants, what his relationship to food is. Maybe you could go to couples therapy together, to find other ways to communicate about this issue.

Just cleaning up the diet a little fixes their problem. I lost 60 lb at age 40 after diagnosis of type 2 diabetes and kept it off for 24 years and counting. I am not insulin sensitive. I have to go full blown keto to stay healthy.

Weight loss is so difficult. The hardest part is maintenance. Losing weight is just the beginning. Often times you lose weight quickly and then plateau. you may even gain the weight back Plus more. I've probably gained and lost 100 pounds throughout the years. I lost 35 pounds in 2015 and have kept it off for almost 7 years.

Thank you for this documentary. I work with people with obesity and am actually quite tired of hearing the rhetoric that long-term sustainable weight loss is rare.
I am the only person in my family who is of normal weight (many of my family members have either gone for bariatric surgery or qualify for it) and so studying obesity medicine was more than just a specialty, it was my ticket out. Learning about epigenetics and how food and exercise change our genes was the most liberating piece of knowledge I'd ever come across. I think sustained long term weight loss comes down to having the knowledge (to know what works - plant based, whole foods, low crap diet), the determination (the 'why') and most importantly, the resources (unfortunately, it takes a constant conscious effort to invest time and money) I am so fortunate to have had all 3 of these. Your documentary helped me see the importance of support groups and I would like to think about how I can provide that for my patients. Thank you so much for putting this out there!

I wish there were pictures of Martha.
    I'm 29 almost 30. I'm 5'3" at 260lbs.
I'm done being morbidly obese! I have a gym membership now. I'm not going to continue this any longer! I've been bigger and I've weighed less. The biggest I've ever been was around 310lbs in December 2016. The smallest I've been in the last year and a half was 245lbs. I was about 180lbs when I was 16 years old almost 14 years ago, but I was still obese.

You can do it! Develop discipline as a primary goal, more than weight loss. The weight loss will be a result of your discipline 😍

Love yourself enough to feed your body healthy food. Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself you love yourself exactly as you are.
Sending many blessings. You are worth it!!
