Not only am I happy Capcom took a chance on this weird little gem of a game, but I am very happy you used your platform to talk about it. Capcom has been the most consistent gaming company in my life from early childhood, through my teens, and well into my adult life. It's good to know that for every AAA Resident Evil and DMC game, they can still pop out a weird little slice of their culture for everyone to enjoy.

@@aquapendulumreally? I'm guessing you are on about Assassins Creed. A series that very beautifully skims the surface of whatever culture they've decided the game is covering whilst simultaneously letting you punch popes. It's never been culturally sensitive. It just seems like it if you are looking in from the outside. The latest "controversy" is just the latest in this recent weird gamer storm that has been whipped up over the last 18 months or so by a section of players who seem to believe that gaming is somehow being taken away from them.
@leonardoedsona Ubisoft has done as much research as normal. I.e they found an interesting historical figure, or made one up, then told a fictional story about them. It's not different to how most games treat the past. People are getting their knickers in so much of a twist over nothing. Yasuke may or may not have been a samurai, different Japanese historians have different opinions. There didn't seem to be much problem with this in Japan for the previous years when he was appearing in manga and anime and on TV. Lots of none Japanese people seem to awfully worked up about this "historical inaccuracy" all of a sudden. Oddly nobody seemed that worked up about the same thing in Ghosts of Tsushima.

11:10 About those sweets. If you pan up the menu where you can see Yoshiro (the girl) and wait for a bit, she will actually eat the sweet treat you offered her. And throughout the game as the story progresses, there are subtle changes to the way she eats 'em. It's these little details that have made me love a good portion of Capcom games over the years, and remind me that part of what makes games memorable aren't the rehashed systems and gameplay loops that make it fun, but the experiences that could only be replicated once. Those single moments last for years and (imo) are what ppl look back on more than just the game itself.
One of the little things I've noticed, and I don't know if it's a trick of the shadows rendering in the game, but her eyes go briefly from dark, and then to clear as she eats the sweet, adding to some of the descriptions that have said that these sweets could ward off evil. As a bonus, there's actually one sweet with a unique animation once she finishes eating it that is quite unexpected.
There's also small descriptions for the villagers in the villages once you're able to rebuild it. Open the map, select a villager, and there's a button prompt to bring up a little info on 'em. I haven't gotten to reading 'em yet, but it looks like they did this for every villager in those levels.
A lot of this game is "show, don't tell" and it's actually been fun to find these little details. Not everyone will have the time or patience to find these, but it certainly puts a smile on my face when devs go this far for the little details because it makes the game feel more vibrant.

My favorite example of a passion project is Megaman 2. Back in the day the dev team wanted to make a sequel for Megaman and Capcom wasn't fully on board with it, but allowed the team to work on it in their spare time as long as kept up with all of their other projects. And because of that we got one of the most iconic NES titles that spawned multiple different series until it's death in the 2010's and slight revival with MM11 and classic collections.

The team behind this game was responsible for another CAPCOM hidden gem by the name of Shinsekai: Into the Depths that came out on mobile then PC and Switch I think in 2019. It was another weird but wonderful experience.
Also regarding the environments, they were all made as practical miniatures before being scanned into the game via photogrammetry.

After I played the demo, I spent a few days trying to articulate what I had just played. This game is a fine blend of tower defense, strategy and character action. If all tower defense games played like this, I would have definitely been on board with the genre. Kunitsu-Gami is the exception.

One particular thing I dislike late game and new game plus is that your currency can be maxed at >1500, but you usually has like 200 after each level. To get those 1000 currency you need to visit previous villages to collect 100 from each of them until you get to >1500. This is basically required since starting a stage with low currency would mean you need to fight like 2 more nights to gain enough for your troops and cleanse the path, or even start over a stage.

I picked this up at release based on Skillup's reaction to playing a preview. Thanks for highlighting it. I had dismissed Kunitzu-Gami after seeing the trailers, but got interested when I learned it was also a strategy game. Really glad I picked it up. I am enjoying it quite a bit, especially the aesthetics and dedication to weaving them throughout every element of the game.
About 3 bosses, 7 stages in however, I am finding it a little too easy. So far there is only one spawn point for enemies, which makes camping right in front of their gate optimal. The levels seem to be encouraging lane-based strategy, but utilizing that seems to just be an incorrect choice so far. (Exception for the centipede boss.) And each of these stages I have played multiple times for the completion rewards. Luckily the vibes are keeping me interested for now. I also appreciate that each level has a unique mechanical flavor (albeit an easy one so far).
Glad to hear it gets more difficult as you progress. I have been waiting for when it introduces multiple enemy spawns and gets out of this tutorial-difficulty feel.

I remember talking about this game and how some people immediately tried to discredit the game just because it was going to be on Game Pass (your standard issue console warring nonsense). Nevermind Exoprimal was too (that had a mixed reception), but it was nice to see how Capcom is willing to give these smaller games a shot and how they can actually be quite enjoyable. Not every game needs to be this giantic experience and to have this smaller one that can still be quite engaging was a welcomed experience. If you do have game pass, it is definitely worth trying it out.
Hopefully Capcom will continue this approach in the future in between their next Resident Evils or Monster Hunters. Who knows what the next smaller title will be, but I like to think between Exoprimal and Path of the Goddess, this new initiative (or at least it feels like a new initiative) has been a delightful.

I'd say as high end publishers go Capcom is one of the most willing to make risky bets. Games like Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Dragon's Dogma weren't guaranteed to do well and were risky bets that paid off. They don't always work like Exoprimal didn't of course. I just wish someone at Capcom would take up the Onimusha and Breath of Fire franchises again.
