Dat COMFORT in playing. So fluent and nice and big rebound, it's just beautiful to see. Beautiful technique. I'm also glad to hear this isn't post processed with quantizing to make it inhumanly tight, like some well known youtube drummers do. At least this sounds human.
Notice his push pull technique with his right hand, I've only seen that technique done by David Diepold, that's when you know your at the top of your game

Dan is calculated, almost comically accurate and musically advanced in every respect from his kit/cymbal setup to his application of each of those instruments. What do you want, to see him grimacing into the camera, or other effects? Go elsewhere. His productions are clean, high quality and consistent. I'd imagine every single person who has read your comment, strongly disagrees that he's sloppy. Good day, sir.

I honestly don't get the hype behind Dan as a drummer. He's tight, I'll give him that, but he's just so boring to watch and listen to, in my opinion. Ne Obliviscaris would be much better with someone like Marc Mas, who used to play for Persefone, IMO.
He plays what the song needs and nothing more, has beautiful technique, his feet are insanely tight, and he is awesome with accents, and fills. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but just because you can't appreciate him doesn't mean others don't. Do you actually play? Maybe that's why you can't appreciate him, every metal drummer I've shown him too has seen the qualities that I, and many others see in Dan.
+BurnThePope I find that in a lot of NeO songs there's a lot of room for Dan to do a lot more than the bare minimum though. Granted Portal was worse for this than Citadel IMO, but overall I believe Portal to be much, much better as an album overall. I don't play drums myself, but my brother is a metal drummer and he and I share a band. I know a lot of what I know because of him and he also really doesn't like Dan as a drummer. As I said before, he is tight, I will give him credit where it is due, but there's just so many opportunities in their songs for Dan to do something fun or interesting but he just doesn't, which is his greatest sin.

All the guys in the band are very highly educated in music and a lot of them teach music education. But I understand if your not into this taste of things. Just thought I'd throw a different perspective at you. And as far as him being hyped, he really isn't, and he's really humble to his fans. But that my opinion.
