@Catra do you even realize how hard they had to fight for an action show for girls. How hard they had to fight to have She-Ra to have her look they based her build on Olympic athletes. They had to make compromises to have the original She-Ra show get made. The 80s show isn't perfect it has its flaws, but you can tell, they really cared about this show, they put in a lot of hard work. They wanted to-do more but cartoon for girls didn't get as much respect as cartoons whete the target audience was boys.
@@honeydroptheunicorn6557 No, they didn't. The only compromise they had to make was a bunch of idiot sensors, usually women, was in the original concept She-Ra was punching a lot more, like He-Man. They whined about it, so no She-Ra throws roundhouse kicks instead. The original show was made as a joined project between Filmation and Mattel; the original He-Man was entirely made by Mattel; but seeing the success of He-Man and that plenty of girls were watching it, Filmation came with the original idea to Mattel to make a female version of He-Man, which they did eagerly without hesitation. The main issue there is that the women working in Mattel's girls toys, including Barbie, hijacked the project away from the Masters of the Universe team, which is why the dolls look so fundamentally different from the rest of the Masters of the Universe line and the cartoon. Something the MotU managed to enforce though, was the same size of the dolls of the MotU line; to make sure size wize they would fit with all the vehicles, buildings, and other action figures, so brothers and sisters could play together. The women at Mattel first wanted to make the dolls bigger than their MotU counterparts, producing a complete missmatch.
@@honeydroptheunicorn6557 Yes but the point is still correct? If you took away old design's clothes, hair, and accessories they would all just be hourglass asf women that look the exact same. Plus, all of the princesses are wearing heels. I probably don't need to add.

The original version aired between 1985 and 1987. And was waaay better. I watched it religiously. And I NEVER saw Light Hope look like that. He was just a great beam of light who guarded the Crystal Castle.
I think videos like these really highlight how far character design in animation has gone. It’s not just “Barbie silhouette with slight adjustments in hair and clothes” for women anymore, and the men aren’t always broad-shouldered and muscular, with defined cheekbones and small eyes anymore. Each character can now be identified by their silhouette (even if you just had their base and not hair/clothes). A lot of progress has been made, and as an artist, it’s even more dynamic/visually appealing when characters don’t have “same body syndrome”.
@YoK-uz2vx that makes perfect sense. Cartoons were created with having a toy line in mind. It's also easier and cheaper to animate. The old series is full of recycled animation like the transformations are always the same and certain moves and scenes are the same. As a kid in the 80ies I didn't mind that, I liked the story line and always having some positive message or lesson at the end. I suppose that's where I got my values from because I didn't have parents who were able to give me any insight or assistance in where my life should go. I was raised by tv literally. Still turned out a decent person I guess. Thanks Heman She Ra and the Carebears 😆
Good character design has always been a thing in animation. During some eras it just got drowned out by cheap cartoons made for toys using conventionally attractive cookie cutter body types everywhere.

The original version of light hope was a beam of light with a husky male voice. And Double Trouble never appeared in the Original She-ra cartoon. Only as a doll and the comic book that came with it. There was no Mara in the Original She-ra.
I am aware of all of these things! I just used the light hope character design for the action figure. Also the Mara from He-Man because He-Man and She-Ra were both made by the same company and occasionally crossed over into eachother! It felt wrong to leave them out since there were technically counter parts somewhere in the franchise.
Yeah I heard apparently the original Light Hope was male but is female in the new series. Plus I also heard original Double Trouble was female and apparently Glimmer's cousin. O_o
I think that both have qualities. The original had better graphism, the new one has better animation, better dubbing, more complex scenarios with a real story that is built through each episodes.
oh honey. I never said it’s shite, I just think the original soundtrack is much better. The story animation and characters on the reboot are superior to the original. Easily
some people in this comment section do not pass the vibe check holy shit. I get that you like the old version because of nostalgia or whatever but the new one is just objectively better isn't it?? the animations much higher quality, smoother. and the colors look much better. the characters don't all have the exact same figure - they're diverse and fun. and the voice acting is just so much better. the scripting doesn't sound weird and awkward.
The old one has more episodes, though! And sold more figures, because - you know - that was part of its purpose. But obviously the animation is gonna be better in the reboot. Animation has come a long way - I mean, look at the original Scooby Doo and compare it to its newer counterparts.

I like how a lot of the new characters have obvious ties to the older designs, like colour schemes or reworked features (Catra for example). The 80s version looked very much like it belonged in the 80s, the characters all share very similar traits. Because of He-mans origins as a toy I don't think that's necessarily a huge fault, and I'm probably biased, but I love the newer redesigns. I really admire in media when you can differentiate characters from their silhouettes and for many SPOP characters you can!
@Aisha Mohamed The old one and new one have the same ages, now tell me which one has the realism. Spoiler alert: If you still choose the old one you’re wrong
@Aisha Mohamed the artwork reflect the age of the characters bud, sorry to say this but your 20-30 year old barbie girls aren’t meant to be looking like 20-30 year old barbie girls because they are teenagers
@Aisha Mohamed bigger boobs and outfits that draw attention to said boobs doesn’t make someone more attractive. The newer design is objectively better on Basic character design, as the silhouettes are very distinct and the old ones aren’t distinct at all. You clearly have not been around kids or women lately. Typical. But...teens look more like 2018 she Ra than 80’s she Ra. 80’s she Ra are sexualized Barbie dolls. Their outfits are pretty generic, with no character to them. Just cuz they look more “mature” doesn’t mean they look better. And how can you look at SW and say a singular cloth is better looking than multiple varied parts to her design like in 2018? The new designs also match their actual personalities and specific powers better. Sooo much better. The ppl who designed the 80’s designs were basing it off of toys and what was manufacturable. It gave them a limited design, which made them all generic. Here they’re designed by ACTUAL character designers. They’re much better cuz they had freedom. And doesn’t rely on the crutch of sexualization and boobs to make a character look attractive.
@Aisha Mohamed I am a teen and I have never seen a single teen who looks like that, all the teens I have seen look way more similar to the new one even if it is animated And also its an animated cartoon I highly doubt they were going for realism anyway...

Even if you stan the original She-ra or not, you have to admit the designs in the new version are more diverse in height, ethnicity and body type. The original shows designs are based of dolls and figures that promoted the show, if you put the female characters along side each other and grayscale them, you wouldn't be able to tell who was who; the only thing that differentiated them were their colours.

Yes, don’t hate on the shows themselves please. I like both versions but it’s hard to watch the 80’s version nowadays without being criticized for being “racist” or “strange” because the show was low budget and from the 80’s. The fandom is the bad part, because they hate on the original for being “racist” or “homophobic” when it was from the 80’s and most of the characters didn’t even have love interests, and there was no racist stereotypes either- the show was on an entirely different planet.

Some one said that they had the same body type so they were easier to turn into toys.

I like how a lot of the new characters have obvious ties to the older designs, like colour schemes or reworked features (Catra for example). The 80s version looked very much like it belonged in the 80s, the characters all share very similar traits. Because of He-mans origins as a toy I don't think that's necessarily a huge fault, and I'm probably biased, but I love the newer redesigns. I really admire in media when you can differentiate characters from their silhouettes and for many SPOP characters you can!
Glimmer's color scheme was almost exactly the same (like, all the same colors) I thought that was interesting lol
@Aisha Mohamed I am a teen and I have never seen a single teen who looks like that, all the teens I have seen look way more similar to the new one even if it is animated
And also its an animated cartoon I highly doubt they were going for realism anyway...

Have to say, even though the new designs are somewhat simplified, most of them are definitely an improvement. And much more variety in body types and shapes, the originals are so similar (just with different costumes).
