This movie has grown on me through the years. I always love Gonzo. He and Rizzo have always been my favorite Muppets. This movie is a guilty pleasure for me cause it speaks to the outcasts and shows that there is more to Gonzo then meets the eye. This movie shows a side of Gonzo thats never been seen before and i feel that makes for a good story.
I agree. It's always nice when a character like him is given depth. This, along with the Lola Falana episode of the show, does just that.
"When you think The Muppets, I don't think outer space is the first thing that comes to mind. "
Not unless it's Pigs in Space
Whenever I hear Brick House this movie always come to mind
I thought the Muppets would sing it in the opening
When I was young watching the original Muppet show, I always wondered if Gonzo wasn't an alien. I always imagined he was, so this movie always made SENSE to me. I think if there was anything wrong with it, it may have been the *wince* human actors. I always identified with Gonzo for some reason, and I was happy he found himself, and his family.
It's a simple thing, but for the rest of Gonzo's crazy attire, I love his red plaid bathrobe. Toss him into space talking to a couple of fish, and I HAVE to think that _The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy_ was an inspiration on this movie.
this is the most underrated muppet movie
No no, it's rated just right.
+swagmasta yep
+swagmasta yep

+Muhammad Nauman ok
Technically Gonzo is a “Frackle” the diverse race of smaller monsters. They’re like more twisted or mischievous Fraggles and they come from a really early Jim Henson Christmas special where Frackles kidnap Santa. A pre-cursor to Gonzo lived in a cigar box
You mean the great Santa Claus switch?
It’s true that the concept is weird but the Looney Tunes playing basketball against aliens is a weirder concept and no one really complained about that. I personally grew up with this movie. It came out a year after I was born so I watched this and Muppet Treasure Island a lot as a kid. In that sense, I never forgot about The Muppets during ‘99 to 2011. So I do credit this movie for keeping The Muppets fresh in my mind
This was MY childhood muppets movie
When I was little, I always assumed that Gonzo was some sort of bird. He had that long, hooked snout that kinda looked like a beak (although now it seems like it's actually a trunk) and those feathers on his head. Plus a functional relationship with a chicken.
Fun Fact: A Brazilian newspaper review of the 2005 "Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition" version of The Muppet Movie mentioned Gonzo as an "Urubu", which is the Brazilian equivalent of "Vulture".
This movie is a guilty pleasure for me cause Gonzo is my favorite lol.
In the Muppet Movie he lifts off with balloons and then belly flops onto a moving car- talk about an amazing character! My favorite line of his-and pretty much of all the movies-"If you were a chicken you'd be impeccable."
LexiPup726 it’s a guilty pleasure for me too cause I love all of the Muppet movies
This was my first Muppet movie and my favorite
yep
I loved this movie growing up! Looking back, though, it's not really that good, but I still have a nostalgic connection with it.
This movie is one of my favorites and I related to Gonzo. For me, this film was really emotional and I cried in the end, despite I didn't see much movies from the Muppets.
My only complaint about this movie is that there wasn’t enough Camilla
wow you're right talk about mega irony
Everyone's entitled to there opinion, I find it funny how heartfelt your review for Christmas carol was and then it feels like you had a lot to vent about here, I like Muppets from space, in fact Gonzo hugging rizzo goodbye brought a tear to my eye a couple of times
P.s I haven't seen it in years though lol but I'll probably enjoy it again
Muppets from space is really entertaining: )
I blame my father for my love for this film.
why
I too say my father is guilty behind my love for Gonzo and the Cosmic Fish.
I actually love this movie
But I think they should’ve added original songs
its been 20 years so you're 31?
And this movie was released the same year of the second sesame street movie the adventures of elmo in grouchland
which also bombed
If Rainbow Connection was in the film, it would be have been cool.
Me: Wow! The Lipton Tea meme caame out around Most Wanted.
Rachel: *mentions vine*
Me: *Spits out tea*
Muppets from Space was from Columbia Pictures in 1999, along with Elmo in Grouchland in that same year. And that not a good sign.
And another big thank you to Rachel for making another fun-loving review. This movie was the first Muppet movie my kids watched and they have been big fans of the Muppets ever since. I don't think they even realize that there's no original music. They're little and allow the magic that is the Muppets to simply make them laugh and be entertained. They even enjoy the funk and go wild when one of those 70's songs is being played on the radio. I miss the coupling of Gonzo and Rizzo and Ed was an awesome bad guy. Again, thank you Rachel for making these reviews. They're awesome. You're awesome.

What's really sad about this film is that originally, Kirk Thatcher had worked up some really good stuff; it was more so about Gonzo being kidnapped by aliens and the other Muppets going to save him--and supposedly had original songs. But for whatever reason Tim Hill's movie outvoted his and Kirk's movie was dropped.
Stupid Tim Hill. Stick to TV!
C.W. Roederer oh man
You forgot to mention that Elmo in Grouchland was released the same year as this movie
Though not in actual puppet form, Gonzo was referred to as an alien in the PlayStation (1) video game Muppet Race Mania as he drove around in a spaceship said to be lent to him by his Alien family. Though that game is kinda like a time capsule of the first 6 Muppet films still owned under the Jim Henson Company at the time.
I would have to admit, I was never a Muppet fan, until I saw the Toyota commercial with Pepe the king prawn, and that was it! Now I can't wait to see this movie, and anything so long as Pepe's in it. He's so funny! thanks for the review. mike
Now I've seen this movie when I was a kid, and just like everything that was mentioned on this movie. As a kid I was totally entertained, just like all the other kids back then. Even though Muppets from space had bombed at the box office.
But it came out on TV again and again, and I think I remembered watching Muppets from space on Disney Channel and probably ABC. So I remembered watching it on TV more than once, and I didn't get lucky to get it on VHS at the time. But no matter what even though all of the hardcore Muppet fans really hate this movie, as a really big fan of the Muppets I really like this movie.
Still to this day I still enjoy Muppets from space I, as an okay and fun Muppet movie for my perspective as a big fan.
But I do realize that Gonzo is a Fraggle creature, originated on Jim Henson's The Great Santa Claus Switch. Gonzo popped out in a little cigar box from the TV special itself, from that TV special there were other fraggle creatures. So when the Muppet Show came along in the mid-70s, one of the puppeteers found the original design of Gonzo from the cigar box that was used on The Great Santa Claus Switch. From that point on Gonzo was used from season 1 of The Muppet Show, and now that I realize it and some of the other hardcore fans. Gonzo is really a Fraggle.
And still to this day, a lot of the hardcore fans including myself have no idea of what the fraggles are native to and where do they come from. But we did get to see more Fraggle creatures from the old school Jim Henson TV show Fraggle Rock. Personally and my opinion I believe that the fraggle creatures are not monsters, I believe they are aliens from outer space from a Faraway planet. And now the fraggles are living a new life on planet Earth, originated from there relatives that might have crash-landed on Earth. Frightened by humans they decided to live underground, but in general perspective they love animals and get along with them.
So if my theory is correct right here, I hope that's the answer. I really hope that fraggles are aliens and not monsters.
However someday they should come up with a real release special edition of Muppets from space, where Gonzo comes up with a forward message or use himself in a footage at the end of the movie. To say that the movie was all fun and entertaining and that he and the other Muppets always wanted to do a science fiction Muppet Movie, and that the idea came about from him and Kermit based on his character, ancestors and relatives that they wanted to use fraggles as the possibilities that they came from outer space in the movie.
If this idea comes about someday, I hope that Muppets in Space will became a cult classic. And a forward message or footage by Gonzo himself, should be able to solve the problem. Because I really do hope that fragile creatures really come from outer space, from a another planet originally
They should do a movie focusing on Rizzo.
I think this movie had to be seen right when it came out to be appreciated - with the X-Files being big, alien TV shows being all over, Pure Funk having just been released! It also has a lot of appearances by 1990s stars.
Wait, Miss Piggy loving Kermit was a core personality trait? I thought it was just a Muppet Trope that gets shoved in all the time.
Muppets From Space and Muppets Tonight started the dark ages of the Muppets up until Letters to Santa.
I liked this one a lot better when it was new. It was among the first times since their performers deaths that we heard Scooter, Rowlf, and Dr. Teeth speak (even if they're not more than a sentence).
I agree. This was the first Muppet Movie to come out two years after I was born. Basically, I was born when Steve Whitmire took over for Kermit but before Frank Oz retired from Piggy, Fozzie, Animal and before I met Sam Eagle
After watching "Muppets From Space" several times for a review I did, I found that this movie is a satire of Bad Family Films.
How
Um dude, i think this is more of an actual bad family film, it may be a guilty pleassure, but its a bit of a bad film
@@supersebac320 I really don't see how it's a bad film
I like this film. It took a very interesting turn on the Muppets. Also this might sound a little ridiculou,. But I was kind of amazed to find out this was filmed in my home state.
1:21 to 1:25 - Gonzo just predicted another Toy Story movie. Let that sink in for a moment if you love the Toy Story franchise. We all thought the films were done after 3, but nearly two years ago, Toy Story 4 hit theaters, and HOLY TOLEDO were they right about the ending. No joke, I CRIED. Anyway, about Muppets from Space, it's a highly underrated movie. I get the fact that it's not your traditional Muppet movie, but honestly, I don't mind it. I think it's a great film. A Muppet movie focusing heavily on Gonzo the Great. I never knew we needed it, but wow, is it enjoyable! And on a sidenote, I think the film was gonna feature Gonzo's song "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday", but it never made it into the final cut. It IS on the soundtrack, though.
Yeah, it's always nice when other characters besides the franchise's main one are given the spotlight. The fact it gives Gonzo depth helps too.
How come you didn't mention Clifford in this review? This is his only appearance in a theatrical film, and it gives him some big character rerailment, as he went back to original self and wearing his shades, after the Muppets Tonight version of him was badly received.
Fun Fact: the puppet used to portray Bobo the Bear first debuted in The Muppets Take Manhattan as an entirely different character. muppet.fandom.com/wiki/Bobo_the_Bear
Thanks for your shout out to Pepe the King Prawn. I fell in love with the character in this movie. I don't think he's been used as well as this since.
Rob Schneider is, a puppet. Rated PG - 13
Revealing what Gonzo is ruins the joke. It's like Showing Ms.Bellum's face on Powerpuff Girls.
The movie isn't the best, but I love that Gonzo is the main focus as, aside from Kermit, he is my favourite Muppet
Apparently, the original idea for the movie was supposed to be Gonzo getting abducted by aliens and the Muppets go to find him. It was also supposed to have original songs. As to why it got changed, I don’t know. Also, there is one other sci-fi reference that I caught years later: the spiral on the globe may be a reference to “The Giant Claw,” a monster movie about a giant bird that invaded Earth. In that film, the attacks end up in a straight line.
Honestly, I think the movie’s all right. I watched it a lot as a kid, and the film played a big role in me loving the Muppets. Also, I think it’s rather bittersweet since to my knowledge, it is the last Muppet production to feature the still living original performers before Frank Oz’s retirement in 2002 and Jerry Nelson’s retirement in 2005.
Actually, it was supposed to be Kermit who was kidnapped by the aliens, and the rest of the gang would have to rescue him by traveling through outer space. And the movie was originally titled "Muppets In Space" and back in 1998, glass cups were made with the pictures having the Muppets in space suits.
Another idea that was never used had aliens being huge fans of The Muppet Show, and believes Gonzo is one of them, and they travel to Earth to find him. Only to later be revealed that Gonzo WASN'T an alien and it was all just a misunderstanding.
Loves this movie when I was younger!
10:09 No bread but when Gonzo comes down he has toast
Both my girlfriend and I avoided this film when we were building up our Muppet Blu-Ray collection. We have every film released thus far, save for this... we have our reasons...
Solid reviews! I've watched everything up to this point, and they're quite entertaining. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Muppets (2011), as it is my personal favorite of the theatrical releases.
What?! You never grow out of any Muppet movie!!
they did a new version of Gonzo(Dave Goelz) singing "I'm Going To Go Back There One Day" for this movie, but didn't use it in tge movie. It's on the soundtrack album, though.
i heard that
Great review! I'll check out your other ones. I find this film to be the equivalent of watching paint dry...with the Muppets. And that last part, well, it admittedly makes anything more fun. This is just such a lost opportunity and that's why I've hated on it for years. It took them a long time to bounce back. I hope for good things from the new film and watching your review about it too. "Yaaay!"
I'd love to see someone make a video behind Jim Henson Pictures, the joint venture between The Jim Henson Company and Sony Pictures Entertainment that produced this film, along with "Buddy" and "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland".
Same.
This was my first Muppet Movie and still love it today
This is a great review. I always find it interesting how opinions vary on the Muppet films depending on the age they were when they first saw the muppets, which film they saw first etc. it's also interesting how your opinion of the film has changed since you first saw it. The Muppets certainly remind people of their youth which can certainly bias views. I really like Muppets From Space, it's in my top 3 with Christmas Carol and Treasure Island, again I think it's because I caught them at the cinema and was just the right age. I remember thinking the original films were a little slow and dull and it taking me a while to get into them. Anyway, great review I look forward to the next one!
I
I
I was only 7 when this movie came out. Call me crazy but before this movie I always thought Gonzo was a bird.
Because his name means Goose?
@@swiftstreak98 Actually, his name means "crazy" or "eccentric." Rather fitting.
Actually, the first time I saw this movie I was five and for the many years of seeing it, I never understood the Noah's Arch reference until about two years ago.
what did you think about mirrormask? that is a jim henson film but it was adapted from the original work of neil gainman
just watched it the other night also no singing technically gonzos relatives do sing celebration at the end but i guess that doesnt count
Frankly I thought that Gonzo the Great was either a Cigar-box Monster or a Blue Kiwi.
How dare you not like Kermit's Swamp Years. I love that. I love knowing where that talking jacket of Jim Henson's mom came from
watchin it tonight
12:07 I recognize him as the mayor from The Grinch
I’m glad someone else brought up how Tambour is actually pretty good in this. He’s basically the only thing I liked about the movie.
I know that K. Edgar Singer's actor also voiced King Neptune in the Spongebob Movie
From what I have seen i have been enjoying your muppet film reviews and will be sure to check them all out at some point. I have seen this movie in it's entirety once (and caught the 2nd half on tv some other time) and after seeing this review....it kinda reminded me that its pretty weird and kinda out of place........and I'm a Gonzo fan!
I have some loose jello ok...mmaaahhhah
I would like to know your thoughts on muppets wizard of oz and the halloween special haunted mansion xxx
Kermit swamp years too xxx
Tim Hill wrote "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie"...
Completely unrelated: there's a mistake in the movie. The first outfit Miss Piggy pulls out, she rejects. Typical diva. Anyway, it's the one she decides to wear for the day a few minutes later. I'm sorry, but I've watched this near ten times and it's always been noticeable to me.
The original final draft of the film's script was about shapeshifting aliens watching the Muppet Show and deciding to shift into Gonzo and invade the Earth. Gonzo would think that he was related to them and join them, but find out the truth near the end and learn to be happy not knowing who he was. It was also supposed to heavily parody scifi and horror films. Apparently, the original director for the film quit the movie and Tim Hill was hired and changed everything to make it the horrible movie we have now.
MichaelSar12IsBack &that movie was good
OH! I LOVED THE ANIMAL SHOW!
I used to wake up early to watch it on Animal Planet! Back when Animal Planet wasn't contaminated with shows about tree houses, pools and gold mining.
28:27 - Okay, time to ask the million-dollar question; why no review for 'Kermit's Swamp Years'? All the other Muppet movies, but you don't want to take a crack at THAT?
Have it on dvd
11:11 Rachel, I'm surprised at you! You, of all Muppet fans should Gonzo's true backstory! As do I so, for the sake of edutainment, I'll explain:
Gonzo was originally one of a group of creatures called Frackles; thing a Fraggle's more irritable, obnoxious, bird-like cousins. In particular, Gonzo was known as Snarl in his original form (which didn't look that far-off from how he looks now, actually), and his species were lead by a villain played by the late Art Carney.
Anyway, Snarl sort of stuck around after the special, as did the other Frackles for many years. The most notable ones are the Blue Frackle; which looks like if Sam the Eagle had an affair with a bat; the Green Frackle, which looks like a monstrous version of Kermit; and the giant blue...dolphin-thing known as Thog. Many of these Frackles faded into obscurity after Season 1 of the Muppet Show, but you can still find the Thog, Blue and Green Frackles even today playing cameos. In fact, the Frackle family lives on even to this day taking on new forms.
But back onto Gonzo, he was given the name Gonzo the Great during the Muppet Show's beginnings and the name's stuck ever since. So here's a question for all you hardcore Muppet Fans out there: If Gonzo's so alone, then where are the other Frackles? Did Tim Hill or Brian Henson forget they exist? Apparently, because we wouldn't see the likes of them again until 2011.
+Adorkable Rachel one reason they probably didn't have piggy show her affection for Kermit is because that dead horse has been kicked so much that it's become annoying at this point
Weirdly enough I consider it the second best muppet film there is, with the first being the best. I think what I love about it is what everyone else hates. The starship arrival feels like something out of a completely different film, and the quiet contemplative scenes feel like the Old True muppets. The various 1990's quirks do not take away from this.
Why is Bobo called Rentro in this movie.
I didn't notice that this film didn't have a muppet song. I still like it. Not great but not bad either. it definitely shouldn't have been a box office failure.
btw, you should do the tv movie reviews
16:39 this is the only reason why I watch this video
...
Fozzie bear is gonna be on big city greens tomorrow morning at eight-thirty.
I personally think this movie tackles the issue of discovering who you are and where you belong.
tonight i'm watching it
So George Sr is hiding out in a muppets movie
I'll take Muppets from Space over The Great Muppet Caper or The Muppet's Take Manhattan any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
1:13 GOD THAT DIDN'T AGE WELL!!!
I've just saw the film. I enjoyed it.
Rachel, I notice that you didn't mention the late Pat Hingle as Singer's boss, General Luft. I also noticed that you didn't review "The Muppets Wizard of Oz".
Please review the Muppet's Wizard of Oz. It's one of my favorites.
Brianna Chiavetta Ashanti cannot act in that movie
This movie is basically Close Encounters of the Third Kind dumbed down for children.
Oh
I’ve always liked this movie. Yeah it’s not one of best Muppet Productions but I think there’s a charm to it that I kind of liked. If it was a musical I think it would’ve been pretty good.
Pepe is the king of this movie. I think I loved any scene he was in
I get Annie Wilkes vibes from this - she wants some cockadoodie songs in this film.
Also, I found the characters far less consistent in Muppets Most Wanted, in which Gonzo, Fozzie and everyone are barely in it and never themselves.
8:07 This is the scene that I remember the most too. Also, you're are fucking pretty.
It’s also Frank Oz’s lastMuppet film
And Jerry Nelson
Muppets, good grief here we go again
I've also often wondered why this muppet film was distributed by Columbia Pictures. I thought Disney had already purchased the Muppets by that point and Disney had distributed and the previous two films, and now all of a sudden Columbia gets to release one, and then Disney starts releasing all further releases then. It doesn't make any sense in my book.
Disney didn't get the rights back until the early 2000s.
Why Sony has that rights because of their former joint venture between Sony and the Jim Henson Company back at 1995. They both wanted to make Henson related movies when their deals was made at the time, but because of this, Elmo in Grouchland, and Buddy bomb at the box office, this cause both companies to end their partnership together, thus leaving Sony to have full rights of that film because of the former partnership together.
I want a muppet movie we’re my boy Fozzie has a side plot Fozzie or something.
I'm a Muppet fan too and you make very good reviews you got a very charismatic personality
This isn't the best movie but it was a great vehicle, and I think its was reason to; view the Muppets be actors. The back and fourth and chatter that they have is very funny. I think it's a great "genetic" push to make sure everyone knows that the Muppets can stand around and throw one liners at each other (to be honest, that's what this film has). ruclips.net/video/2eb8M17qmgU/видео.html
I'm a gigantic wrestling fan...HOW DID I FORGET THAT HULK FUCKING HOGAN WAS IN THIS?!
Trying to avoid spoilers for MMW!. It's getting harder and harder! At least it's almost here.
yu6p
Oh come on, Brian Henson should direct more movies to keep the legend of his father alive. Like for instances here is my list of Henson movies that should have been made:
1 The Snow Queen (in 1998)
2 Animals vs Aliens (in 2000)
3 The Lion King Remake (in 2002)
4 The Happy Time Patrol (in 2004)
5 Maurice Sendak's Outside Over There (in 2005)
6 Dragon Flyz (in 2007)
7 The Night on Bald Mountain (in 2009)
Which movie would you like to see if they were made?
