Missing Melanie. She taught me to quilt way back in 2018. As fate would have it, I was diagnosed with kidney cancer around the time I heard of Melanie’s passing in January. Reading about her journey gave me the faith to start mine and rediscover my love of crafting. She brought so much joy to my life.
I like how you don't just cover what to cut but also the correct way to cut. For a beginner like me it's so nice that you don't assume we know because some other tutorials don't even mention including the line or making an edge you can trust. That makes so much of a difference! I was frustrated for so long cause I couldn't figure out why my pieces seem to get slightly smaller as I go when I thought I was doing it right. TYTYTY. this helps a lot!!!
Brand new to sewing. Was gifted an old workhorse (husqvarna viking 6430) and just learning to use it. Really happy i found your channel. Your presentation of material and information is very approachable.
Thanks Melanie for your clear and easy instructions. I just finished my first quilt and it is a gift I feel confidant in giving. You have a gift of teaching. God bless you in your health issues.
Thank you so incredibly much for this video !!! I'm a beginner and this video was exactly what I need to see on how to cut my squares !!! It's so scary the first time on our precious fabrics!!
Your videos are so helpful. I love that you just crack on with the task in hand rather than giving a lot of waffle. Thank you so much you have taught me to quilt and cut 💕
Thank you so much for this video! Although I'm not a quilter, I've been having trouble cutting my fabric. This video made my cutting experience way quicker and so much more accurate!!! Great video!
The easier option, cut from the left side for your first cut. Line the ruler up with the bottom edge and make the first cut slightly larger than your measurement. Flip that first cut piece around and square off the uncut left edge. NOW, you continue cutting from the left, no need to flip the strip around. Anytime you move the stack of strips, there is movement. If you are cutting only 1 piece, flipping does not cause a problem but when you are stacking several, cut from the left and square the first cut and don't move the stack.. just continue from the unmoved left edge. Easier, and more accurate.
Thanks for answering my big question with this video. I've never understood if you include the line in when measuring to cut. Such a little thing to be so important. :)
Carla Gertz I always err on the side of "more" (which means I always include the line) because you can always reduce, but it's so, so hard to add more (if that makes sense!).
Muchisimas gracias Melani x tus consejos, todos los dias se aprende algo, recibe un cariñoso saludo desde Buenos Aires Argentina,un placer ver tus videos, muchas gracias x tus enseñanzas .!!😍😍😍
Might I suggest to go to Good Will to look for fabric? Also, I find some great fabrics in the women's dress section. A size 3x, for example, has a lot of usable fabric. Practice a 1/4 inch seam as it can be challenging.
Thank you for a great video! Any tips on getting a straight cut when using a rotary cutter? It doesn't seem to matter the brand or newness of my blades& cutters, there always seems to be a 'jog' in my fabric so the line is never quite straight.
I used to have the same problem until I started standing with my shoulder in line with my ruler (cut line) and angled my blade just into my ruler instead of straight alongside the ruler and that seemed to stop the issue for me.
Thanks Melanie. Awesome info. Makes cutting exact a little clearer. Love your fingernail polish. Can you tell me the name of it? Would like to purchase some. 😍😍✂️😍😍💅 Thanks very much! Have a great day!
If my fabric fits on my mat, instead of flipping the fabric after I make sure my cuts are straight, I flip my mat so that don't have to move the fabric at all.
Thank you for this video! May I ask what circumstances do you use like on your mat? The use lines on ruler when cutting is new to me. I've always used the lines on my mat!
Hey Melanie! Got a question for ya. I'm getting close to begin quilting and/or FMQ on my very first quilt...💃🏼 😂 (& it's a queen size). I may have bitten off too much cuz the machine I have sits on my large sewing table however it's not flush with the table. I have an accessory piece for my machine that works like a Sew Steady but I really don't think it's substantial enough for so much bulk. Do you have any ideas as to how I could ..get a great price for a long arm 😂 OR "quilt-as-you-go" (which I've never done before & you could do a tutorial 👍) OR just struggle along in hopes that it doesn't look completely awful. Make sense? I need your brainpower! 💪
Hello Melanie, Have you ever made quilt outta you old t-shirts? I got alot of old football, army, and fraternity shirts I'd like to use. Been thinking about buying a machine to have another hobby. Thanks for sharing😀
I'm not an expert, but after following her tutorials to make my first quilt, I would suggest checking your old t-shirts for any stretch. Having any kind of stretch in your fabric can cause problems, both when you're sewing (stretch is challenging to work with for beginners) and down the line (warping and distorting). 100% cotton is a quilting favourite, and it has no stretch. Even if you don't go that route, I definitely recommend buying a machine and starting this hobby. I've been finding it really fun and satisfying!
@@christianne1984 Well thankyou Christianne! I 've purchased the Singer 4411. My quilt is sandwiched so only 2 steps left. I have to quilt it and bind the edges. I appreciate your help😗👍🏾
@@TroyboyQUE That's really cool, good luck with the last steps! It's really great to see how many people are taking up quilting because of these videos.
Melanie, do you not iron your fabric beforehand? I iron and starch the living heck out of my yardage before I do any cutting as I'm so afraid of any shrinking. Do you not have those issues? Been watching you for years, and my quilting has come a long, LONG way!! How can I ever thank you enough for giving me a hobby that I couldn't live without now??
I love your videos. May I suggest just making a video of you making a quilt. I find sewing very therapeutic, even watching sewing. Maybe I'm just a creep. Haha.
Jan L Yes, I am aware. I have seen her Quilting Series maybe 5 times, all 5 videos. I was just suggesting a video of sewing, not necessarily a tutorial.
Jan L Carla Gertz It's fine, that is very valid information for someone that wouldn't know. But yes, I just want to watch sew. reminds me of when I would watch my grandma sew. so if I'm not crocheting or sewing, I'm watching someone else crochet or sew. Haha.
With a medium blade Fiskars rotary blade work? Also I tend to lose control and instead of cutting in a straight line I make several incomplete Cuts next to each other. How do I make it stop?
Buying ones that are frosted helps, but I have a friend that uses silicone strips to keep them straight. Or even using my cellphone to hold the ruler in place because the rubber from my case helps keep my rulers from shifting
My friend just gave me a 3lb weight to put on my ruler and I will never go back!!!! I do love the creative grids rulers, they have little nonslip grippers on them! My fave!
Please can you make a video on the supplies you.You made a video on new studio tour but you didn't described what supplies you have .If you will make a video on I will be highly thankful to you

Still watching Melanie's videos, so helpful and always nice to hear her cheery voice. I hope she knows how appreciated she was and still is. xx

No one ever explained to me to include the line on the ruler!!! What a lightbulb tip! I always struggled to know how to use the lines! Thank you!
Thank you, Melanie, for being so clear and specific. I'm the kind of person who really needs that.

I have just started quilting, you are very easy to understand. Thank you so much
No one can explain things better than you. God bless
New to quilting. Will try this cutting method. Thank you for explaining how to use the different ruler and grid lines.
Thanks Melaine for the tutorials. I am new to quilting and you teach very well. Thanks for all of the tips! I am looking forward to quilting.

Hi, Melanie. Your tutorials just keep getting cuter and cuter every single day. What do you love about sewing? Have a good day, Melanie.

Thank you so much for this tutorial. It helped me a lot!
Thank you! VERY beginner, hoping I cut nice and square! 🤞
Thanks for the line on the fabric tip. Never knew that.
You have the best tutorials, thanks so much!
This is the part of quilting that I struggle with the most. I find myself turning it around and around and trimming and trimming.
Thanks Melanie. Awesome info. Makes cutting exact a little clearer.

Ashley Bass I only use the lines in my mat when I don't have a ruler big enough to use, so that would be anything wider than about 12.5 inches :)
Love your videos, attempting my first quilt!
Thank you for this video. I am new to quilting. Is this square size the standard for quilting? 6.5 inches by 6.5 inches?

I looooove that floral watercolour fabric!! What is the name/brand?

I like to iron everything also whether I’m making quilt or garments. I think it would make cutting more accurate
Thank you so much Melanie! x
Great thank you
Luv the fabric!
Should I iron fabric first? Working with shirts

I find my long acrylic ruler slips easily when making long cuts. I guess it’s a matter of practice but do you have any tips for that?
Buying ones that are frosted helps, but I have a friend that uses silicone strips to keep them straight. Or even using my cellphone to hold the ruler in place because the rubber from my case helps keep my rulers from shifting

The small ruler you used was not listed in the description box where can I buy it ?
Love your Channel 😍
Thank you!
What brand is the large ruler? Where can I purchase one just like it?
Definitely missed!
Thanks for the tips. But shouldn't you iron first? It seems like the sizing would be off on the ones with fold marks in them.
Very helpful! Thank you.
now I want to make a quilt!!!
Oh, do it!! It's so much fun!!
I an just starting out quilting and I am having a hard time squaring up my fabrics I have 2in by 24in ruler do I need a larger ruler
