  • Discover the shocking downfall of VICE from a $5.7B media giant to bankruptcy. Learn more about what led to VICE's financial troubles and ultimate shut down.
If you were tuned to pop culture in the 2010s, then you know that it was impossible to escape Vice. No, we don’t mean drinking, drugs, and partying, though that’s going to come up later in this video, don’t worry. We mean Vice, the Canadian-American media company that’s been at the forefront of entertainment and journalism for years.
This company was behind such iconic documentaries like FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened which exposed the infamous Fyre Festival and Make the World Greta Again which followed climate activist Great Thunberg. Being at the cutting edge of journalism, Vice Media was a hot corporate property. In the same decade, Vice saw hundreds of millions of dollars in investment from 21st Century Fox, TPG Capital and A&E networks.
Now, just a few years after these decade-defining creative wins and financial backing, Vice has filed for bankruptcy. This comes months after the company cancelled several projects already in development and laid off staff.
So, what went wrong? How could a company that was valued at $5.7 billion a few years ago be going bankrupt? And is there any hope of Vice recovering from this setback? Stick around and we’ll dive right in.

They started out as everything we need from a news source - unbiased, raw, willing to ask difficult but important questions without an agenda. Often even diving into complex situations without a full understanding, actively seeking answers. It was refreshing and relatable.
After a while, they became just like the rest. They grew to be political, only covered certain types of stories and went into everything with an agenda and a pre-defined opinion that they would find some way to support.
They went from being a brand I’d instantly watch no matter what the title to being the exact opposite. They fell down to match the likes of Buzzfeed where any time you see that logo, you know there’s no actual value to be had and keep scrolling.
    It’s a shame, really.

One of the smartest things said here. And no one’s lining up behind it. Instead just cawing away like a bunch of pet parrots stuck in their cage watching FoxNews all day … “caw … get woke go broke get woke go broke … caw”.
How do you explain the end of a media company that constantly did stories mainstream media wouldn’t touch and was often critical of the same companies and people that owned these msm companies? When those same ex-competitors become big “investors” in your contrarian media company … they mean to kill it off.
And they did. No doubt the owners made of with a tidy sum for opening the doors to let them in.
But when your competitors suddenly become your best buddy investors? They mean to put you out of business!
It’s like the Simpson’s episode with Bill Gates and Homers new internet company.

Newspapers are going bust at a rate of 2 per week in the US.. a trend that began in the 1990s. It is no surprise that nobody wants to pay for the news.. but like everything, you generally get what you pay for.. and we need good news reporting if democracy is to function.

I think Shane, Sharoosh and the other dude wanted to chime in on the liberal youth but didn't realize how out of place they would be working with them...tell Jenny from sales an iffy joke at the water fountain and next thing you know she's having a meltdown in HR...

Showing Shane crying in your thumbnail is ridiculous. Vice may ultimately fail but if you think he'll walk away with anything other than tons of cash in the bank, you're nuts.

They spent a lot of time attacking "the man." Looking out for the worker class and calling out bad corporate behavior. Interesting how that works.

The long multi-episodic coverage of Russian invasion in 2014 of Ukraine was what put VICE on my radar. I've been a fan since then. And long after their demise ill watch their older content.
