The billion dollar business of gambling addiction | DW Documentary

  • The number of sports betting sites exploded during the coronavirus pandemic. This business, which relies on people with a gambling addiction, is legally all above board. But the sites are run by international companies that employ controversial methods.
    How can this billion-dollar business, whose influence extends into the worlds of sport and politics, be stopped? The sports betting sector generates huge revenues and profits by exploiting some of the weakest members of society. With impunity. Around 37 million Euros worth of bets are placed every day in Europe. The market has grown 40-fold over the past 20 years.
    This success isn’t a fad, but the result of a perfidious marketing strategy. Various platforms deluge the public sphere with betting incentives for every major sporting event: Continuous advertising loops, omnipresence on social networks, sponsorship of sports programs and football clubs, collaboration with sports stars and influencers. More and more people are becoming addicted to gambling because of this aggressive advertising. Some of them are driven to ruin, even suicide.
    Most internet platforms belong to one of five multinational companies. They operate largely unnoticed by the public, and use their money to finance sports clubs and political parties. Like the tobacco industry, they also work to promote addictive behavior. In France, 60 percent of their turnover comes from people with problematic gambling behavior. The companies do not shy away from manipulation, and sometimes even intervene in legislation. Health science is sounding the alarm and calling for government action, but most European countries are ignoring the problem.
    Filmmaker Linda Bendali examined the practices of sports betting providers in Germany, France, Britain and Spain. By what means do they lure their victims? Who supports them? What can be done to counter their growing influence? Are governments and sports clubs prepared to take robust action, even if it means losing millions of Euros?

    In a world, where everything is designed to be as addictive as possible - from apps, gambling, drugs, foods, sex and so on - addiction should be taught in schools. People need to be prepared to recognize addictive habits and patterns. I doubt that prohibition and regulation will fix the issues at this point anymore.

    The problem with gambling is that its very dangerous for people with personality disorders like OCD or people who are in a rough place already, like going through a divorce, got involved in some sort of accident or whatever. Its almost the same like the flue or corona. To normal healthy happy people its not much of a problem. You gamble some with your mates, have some fun duing the game and lose a couple of tenners. Well worth the fun and excitement right? But the fact is that these companies are not interested in you. They are praying on the weak and these are the people that need some sort of protection from us as a society in general.

      @ageoflove1980 Месяц назад

      @@AshishPatel-wm9yz Im not a professional in any way, so take what I say with a grain of salt. But the way I see it, the gambling problem is a symptom, not a cause. So just trying to quit gambling is a futile effort because you are not fixing the issue why it became a problem in the first place. What works for me as a short term solution is exercise. I just jump on my bike and get a real good workout in. First of all, it makes you feel better about yourself because you are improving your body. Secondly, when doing some real exercise your body generates natural adrenaline and dopamine, replacing pretty much the same stuff you produce when gambling. And lastly, exercise is cheap plus it obviously tires you out. When I have cycled for like 2 hours... man im done, I just want to hang out behind my computer and watch some RUclips and eat some food and thats it.
      So, if you do this ideally every day, but at least a couple of times a week your need to gamble should naturally disappear over time. So, instead of trying not to gamble, which is in essence a negative action, trying to NOT do something, turn it around in to positive beneficial action and just go out and just work out as hard as you can every time you can. Again, I am not a professional and im sure this is no magic cure, its just something that personally really helps me feeling better, and when you feel better its way easier to do something that might be tough.

    Addiction happens because of lack of awareness. Learning, Law of large numbers and Central limit theorem can help you in de-addiction. Once you become aware that you are beaten statistically, then you won't play until you find a loophole in favour of you. This is how some people become professional gamblers because they find some flaws.
