I tied a couple dozen of these over the winter but I tied them with a tan foam body and little bigger size 12 and 14's. Last weekend I caught 4 smallmouth on a big articulated fly called Swimmy Jimmy, tonight they wouldn't have it. I put this foam caddis on and caught 13 smallmouth bass and 6 bluegills. Thanks Davie. Great pattern for me here in the States.
A model that should not leave the fish indifferent! Easy to make and should float pretty well, especially in fast water. Personally, when I tie flies with foam bodies, I put a line of varnish on them because I noticed that, even if there is a lot of trapped air, the foam still tends to soak up a little. Or, I simply grease the foam body but I prefer the first solution because after a while the grease goes away. Thank you again for this very nice model. All the best.👍👍👍👍👍
Davie that was just the pattern I was looking for! I'm teaching my 9 year old son how to fly fish and I need something that is quick to tie (so when he looses them it's no big deal), and floats really well. Thanks for another great pattern and video.
What a great simple pattern. Hope you are feeling better. My son, his wife and daughter just got over the plague. Take care of yourself. We need you. ATB
This fly would make a superb dry dropper. Maybe slap a pink crest on top of the deer hair before tying the foam back for the head... Best wishes, Davie.
Really like this! It will be an awesome panfish and Guadalupe bass fly. 👍👍 Kind of similar to the Llano bug I use, but easier to tie in small sizes. Going to tie some up after work today. Really appreciate it, thank you! Have a great week Davy. 🎣
A splendid modern fly pattern Davie. I had some trout from the Kelvin on Grannom just last week. I was surprised to see them so early and as they were emerging among a March brown cum LDO hatch I thought they were just that, Doh!!! However, when I switched to the Grannom pattern I got some amazing action with trout coming right out of the water to take the fly. I also got some fish on a DHE which I think they took for a Grannom. The use of deer hair in dries has become a must for me as with other tryers and I think it gives us great versatility in our patterns, especially for river trout. The only thing missing from your pattern is a green tag. However, I don't consider it an essential as only the female will have this. In fact, I looked at a couple of the naturals from last week and I seen that the egg sack is not always so green, I would say it appeared more blueish to me. I am now of course looking for some blue floss or dubbing. Best wishes as always Davie.
The best detached foam body caddis I’ve seen. You have both improved and simplified the dressing. When I reuse the cdc fibres for dubbing to stretch out the materials I add some hares mask, west African squirrel, and or seals fur upto twenty percent to increase the buggy and leg effect. Looking forward to attempting to test my 62 year old eyes having a go at #20’s. Will have to use a magnifier and arm extensions lol
Very nice fly. I have been able to fish for largemouth bass and the occasional bluegill with foam flies in the small lakes around my house. Tied that fly and will try it out today.
Thanks Davie great fly will try it next fishing trip. can you recommend a good fly tying vice? I got one £100 but it let me down it was poor. my budget is about £100 I like the base vice the rotatable Thanks.
Hi Neil, Getting a true rotary and with a base around this price is quite hard to find so I have attached one of the best rotary vices and very popular with many tyers which is sightly more than the money you want to spend but I am sure you wouldn't go wrong with this one..I would do a search for videos on the vice as I am sure you will find some to give you a better idea of what it's like..I hope this is of some help to you.. All the very best Davie.. www.orvis.co.uk/products/renzetti-traveler-2000-vise-8g26
Man that Sunburst is fantastic. Have to admit I was a liitle diapointed you didnt talk about Angora Goat dubbing. But still interesting to those of us landlocked. So do you use pig or hog and what parts and how? Thanks again for the info and dying tips. Need to hunt down some Vinyard dyes
Hi Steve, I have attached a link to the foam I used in the video though you could look in your local craft shop as you can buy it at times from them.. All the very best Davie.. www.veniard.com/closed-cell-foam-sheet/p/3888
Hi Peter, It was a size 18 Fulling Mill ultimate dry fly hook though I also like the short shank special or even Czech nymph hook by them as well on this style of fly.. All the very best Davie
Morning Yvon Poitras, It was 2mm for this size of fly though you will have to size the foam to suit the fly you are tying, 1.5mm wide for the size 20 and 3mm wide for the larger size..The foam will reduce a little when you use the lighter to shape and seal the foam so you have to compensate for this a little as well.. All the very best Davie..
That should float forever Davie brilliant tying as always sir
Your very welcome Davie sir 😊😊

That is probably the easyest caddis pattern I have seen. Thanks for taking the time! Atb.

Great little fly. Bet it lasts forever too.

Прекрасно!

Впечатляет,,,,👍
Seems so nice! Do you think I can use it for deep sea fishing with lead especially for bream for example?
Have a look at Skip Morris's Foam Predator. That will work in that application.
Thanks Davie great fly will try it next fishing trip. can you recommend a good fly tying vice? I got one £100 but it let me down it was poor. my budget is about £100 I like the base vice the rotatable Thanks.

May i use different foam color and do you think it's viable to rig it on dry-dropper combo ?
Could you please tell me which foam your using or where I might obtain it. I'd like this in my flybox.

Hi Davie, nice adaptation of the balloon caddis. What make of hook are using if you don't mind me asking?
Hi Peter,
It was a size 18 Fulling Mill ultimate dry fly hook though I also like the short shank special or even Czech nymph hook by them as well on this style of fly..
