  • The right grip is essential in badminton to hit powerful shots from the backcourt but also to play precise shots at the net. Even a slightly wrong grip can have a tremendous impact on your racket skills but even your footwork so getting the grip right is essential.
    In this video I go over the two biggest mistakes especially beginners make when they start out and then give 3 guidelines for a good basic grip.
    0:00 Intro
    0:37 Indexfinger
    3:26 Always the same grip
    5:35 3 Guidelines
    8:42 Outro
    If you are not familiar with the different grips I also made a detail video with the four most important and most used grips that will help you to play almost any basic shot: • Badminton Grip Tutoria...

    7:00 thanks man! Seen a lot of videos telling me to have index finger above the thumb, but I lost a lot of control and power in my clear and smash. Makes more sense to put thumb at the top when hitting the shuttle, so thank you for clarifying this!

    • @martincerven
      @martincerven 2 года назад +2

      Well you gain more lever when you have index finger above thumb, I think I have seen only one Korean player holding racket like that while jump smashing. At some point 10% increase in smash power does not mean anything if your accuracy is 1 meter wide.

    Tobias thanks as always for the video. I have one question in reference to finger order. I am not understanding how you go from index finger on top to thumb on top while making the swing. I think I would mess up the swing if I try to change the finger order while hitting. I hit all forehand shots with the index finger on top.

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  2 года назад

      This is something that just happens by tightening the grip during impact and if you relax your grip after a smaah you will most likely not even realize that it happened. Only when you do sticksmashes I think it is quite easy to feel the difference

    • @netuser258
      @netuser258 2 года назад

      @@tobiaswadenka8435 Thanks again for the reply. I tried to practice this in slow motion and each time I would tighten my grip my index finger kept going on top of my thumb. The only way I could make the thumb be on top when tightening was to place my thumb at same level or higher than the index finger. Then when squeezing the index finger would naturally go below the thumb. Maybe I'm overthinking it but how much importance does this finger order have? I made a 20 second video of me gripping to show what I mean. ruclips.net/video/fQ-RgrNMWhk/видео.html

    Great video, lots of useful advice. What about grip size? I always feel I need to add another grip on top to make it bigger, otherwise feels too thin and I lose control and get pain in my elbow - what is the best size to have and how to know if too thin or too big?

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  2 года назад

      It depends on the size of your hand but I think tip #1 can help here. If you have trouble keeping the grip loose it is probably to thick. When your fingers are reaching too far around the grip so you already touch your hand again it is most likely too thin.

    Beginners tend to do this is because they try to generate rotational power by pushing the index finger when hitting the shuttle. Not yet able to using forearm, shoulder or body rotation

    Use of index finger is not for power , u can use it for quick return of service shots that floats above the net ( jus pushed ) . The index style will be quicker for that reaction.. and rotating the wrist or lower arm may hit the net if u lunge too near to the net ..

      Mayb one of the biggest questions and hardest tasks for a coach. The longer a player used that grip the harder it will be to fix it but there are a few things you can do or use. One is a gripfixer, that was invented in denmark a couple of years ago for exactly that reason. If you can wait a little longer I will make a review on it in one of the future videos

    Thanks. The thumb position at impact is huge information. It makes a lot of sense because to get more powerfull grup with more finger power. Surprisingly i've not noticed any coach pointing that out. Instead they point out that the index finger shout be on top. So i've been playing that way for years, even though i've notice thumb on top gives a better grip on impact. When i study videoes of pro players i do notice it now. Its very difficult view the fingers even in slow motion. But its evident in some of the smashes in this video ruclips.net/video/hLwaHfjlojU/видео.html
