Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been looking for this film for over forty years. I am a huge Ethel Waters collector and this is the one movie that I had not seen. I visited Miss Waters a few months back at her tombstone at Forest Lawn in Glendale, CA. I wish that I could share a photo I took.
I had the great pleasure of seeing her live on stage at a tapping of the Hollywood Palace which was hosted by Diana Ross & The Supremes in 1969 (it can be seen on RUclips).
To this day Miss Waters still does not have a star on Hollywood's Wall of Fame which is an outright shame and a crime.

Ethel Waters (1896-1977), was my maternal Great-Grandmother's cousin. She could be a difficult person but by all accounts was a revered, professional, exacting, dedicated, and fine actress; receiving an Academy Award nomination for her role of Aunt Dicey in Pinky. She was the second Black actress ever to be nominated for the Academy Award (Pinky), and the first Black actress to be nominated for the Emmy Award (Route 66). Incidentally, Gail Fisher of Mannix fame, was the first Black actress to win the Emmy Award. A renowned blues singer, dancer, and actress, she was known as "Sweet Mama Stringbean" during her heyday of the 1920's & 30's. Notable songs include: Am I Blue?, Happiness Is Just A Thing Called Joe, Taking A Chance On Love, His Eye Is On The Sparrow. Waters was also the first Black to host and star in her own television special. Having long since lost her svelte figure, by the late 40's she was relegated to and made the best of matronly supporting roles-usually as domestics- in Pinky, and The Member Of The Wedding. Occasionally, she turned a starring role such as in Cabin In The Sky. Although lifelong friends, Waters gave director Vincente Minnelli fits during the filming of Cabin In The Sky due to her demanding nature and her cruelty towards then ingenue singer and co-star Lena Horne. Horne in turn took out her frustrations on co-star Butterfly McQueen. Because of racism and her difficult reputation, she was blackballed by Hollywood studio execs for years until Pinky. Later film roles include: Carib Gold, The Heart Is a Rebel, The Sound and The Fury. She continued to work in television during its Golden Age : The Ethel Waters Show (1939), Beulah (1951-52), Daniel Boone, Owen Marshall, Route 66, Encounter, The Hollywood Palace, The Barbara McNair Show, Texaco Star Theater, General Electric Theater, Climax!. In middle-age, she became a born again Christian and worked/sang fervently for the Billy Graham Crusade until her death in 1977 aged 80 (Cancer). She was married and divorced three times without issue (children). In her own words, Waters was openly and unapologetically bisexual, "The BEST that ever did it!" during her early career heydey. Her Grand-Niece is 90's R&B/House singer-songwriter Crystal Waters (Gypsy Woman-She's Homeless, 100% Pure Love, Relax, Regardless, What I Need, Say, If You Feel Alright!).

The Voodoo religion was never bad. It was a powerful West African religion. Once it reached the shores of Catholic society bringing Africans to the Spanish slave trade in Cuba, Brazil, and around the world, Santeria was born. Do your own research on this. This was a beautiful, dignified movie. I wish we saw more films like this growing up.

Voodoo was the worship of the Serpent, the Devil, Satan, and the use of witchcraft. That is why the children of Y'Israel were taken into captivity, for worshiping other gods and forsaking their God, Yahweh.

In West Africa they kill children, infants and albinos for their body parts. That's part of your 'powerful' voodoo 'religion'. They practiced cannibalism for millennia. It seems like YOU didn't do much research, and I'd advise you to do so. There are Western lawyers trying to bring murderers to justice in Africa as these practices continue and you can find documentaries online.

I was hoping for something more, but I have to admit I enjoyed this movie, Ethel Waters supercharges any movie she is in. She was such a wonderful woman. Anyone who is a fan of Ethel Waters, watch the interview of her by Dick Cavett. She was a beautiful soul... rest in peace with the Good Lord Ms. Waters

THANK YOU REELBLACK for sharing this beautiful film with the world. We see so many negative portrayals of Black people and their lives today this was so refreshing. I still don't like that the darkest person in the film was evil, but to see "voodo" (this was actually a Yoruba offshoot like Lukumi or Santeria) portrayed as a force for justice balanced it out. THANK YOU!!!!
