Manton Moreland was a fantastic comic actor, who both rose above and subverted the material he was given. He often had the valet/butler/scared assistant roles that were routinely dished out to Black actors, but he has a knowing quality to his acting, and furthermore he's bloody good. He's one of those actors younfind yourself concentrating on when he's in a group of people.
He had more natural talent in his little finger than his costars did in their entire resume. Personality, timing, he had everything. Wish he'd been born later.
As a white guy who loves old movies i'm going to say two things 1)Mantan Moreland made this movie 100% allll the way the Gem it is,and 2) He was from my home state and was born in Monroe, Louisiana.Proud to call him a fellow Louisianian
This is the hardest kind of movie to pull off. What usually happens is the comedy totally undermines the chills and the suspense. Here it all comes together to make a great movie that really holds up. If you like Abbott & Costello, you're gonna ♥️ this movie.
Maybe this was mentioned, but I think it's worth repeating. Moe and Larry wanted Mantan to take Shemps place and the studio suits said no. Moe talked about how he and Larry were excited about working with him and to adapt his many excellent bits for the Stooges.
The studio said no to Mantan Moreland, but said yes to Joe Besser. Somebody make some sense out of that for me. Mantan would have fit right in with the Stooges comedy. Joe Besser’s fitting in was awkward at best. He was a capable comedian, but his comedy didn’t fit the Stooges at all.
@@albertwells8503 I believe Moe talked about how he and Larry wanted to do Mantan's interupted conversation routines and Moe said Mantan was great at playing scared. It would have been great.
Yes in every movie that he made you I couldn't wait until he came on scene. Because you know he was going to be a scene STEALER! You should watch in the Charli Chan movies.
"Uh oh, I knowed I wadn't cut out to be no blackbird." --Mantan's character, flying in an airplane that's lost. Later on. "I thought I was an off color for a ghost.". Can that even be said today?
Joseph Perkins you are so right. I enjoy all these movies he play in. We are from Dillon South Carolina and we always grew up with our white counterparts. Never a ploblem, then one day all that changed. We were all sad and dismayed by the change. But we kept loving each other. Now we know where the ploblem steamed from.
Joe! Sorry to hear about that! There are always nasty people trying to stir up trouble between the races! Quite often they are politicians!!! (White guy from Canada)😢
🦆I was also born in 57. You could go to the movies ( Triple Feature ) for 50 Cents, a large Popcorn was 5 Cents, The Only size, and a bag of candy was another 5 Cents. America was manufacturing high quality products that did not break for very reasonable prices. In 1967 the Base cost of a NEW Corvette Convertible $4,084.00
I was born in 1953 up in Canada, and life up here was quite similar to your America of the time! We Canadians used to buy all your fantastic cars from Detroit, and we loved all your movies! A lot of us wished we could move to the U.S.! Even with all your hurricanes and tornadoes and earthquakes, it would be better to live there than in this refrigerator called Canada! Right now, the cold is starting, and it won't be warm again till July of next year again!🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶
Mantan Moreland performed a very stereotypical role with his own special touch And glad to see his name here in top billing so richly deserved enjoyed this gem with it's comic moments 😊😊😮😮
48:17--move over boys, I'm one of the gang now! If Mantan ever did a scene in a movie that he didn't steal, I've never seen it. It is a shame the way things were and are, so that his talent has not been showcased the way it deserves.
I loved this. I use to watch old movies with my granny. I only knew the brother from Jack Benny as rodchester. I was thing of my granny and this popped up in my que. So I laughed as I thought of the memories we shared. ❤ Gratitude for the up load. Chicago love
love these old movies especially with Mantan Moreland! But only a certified Union zombie can withstand multiple bullet wounds from point blank range… 🤔
Jesus- he was a wonderful actor who absolutely entertained everyone..there are character actors of every color being in roles and archetypes , the times were the times..bless him
This film reminds me of all those late night cheesy horror movie TV shows that aired back in the 60s and 70s like Ghoulardi in Cleveland or Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Mantan Moreland was quite an actor for his time, and Maguerite Whitten was so pretty!
@baptizedbyfire yes that too, but it turned out to be a blessing to him because he met the pretty girl, and maybe he was not allowed to drink because he is the driver, but if that was the case he should have been offered a non alcoholic drink, have a great night and be safe 😇
One of my favorite Mantan Moreland features. Peace and Blessings!

yup, in fact he was usually billed 3rd or 4th but would end up stealing the scenes... He quickly became the main draw in a lot of movies.
I love his acting, if I see his name I watch the movie
Moreland is bad actor. He plays " à i'ancienne " always looking the camera.
He had more natural talent in his little finger than his costars did in their entire resume. Personality, timing, he had everything. Wish he'd been born later.
@@brunorobin2429 That was his job. You really think a professional would ignore his director and blocking? 😁

The greatest thing about this movie is Mantan, he was hallarious and I enjoy every film he was in..

I hate Abbott and Costello
So do I.
I haven’t seen this movie for over 60 years. Thank you for collecting and sharing these great old movies.
As I have said before these old black-and-white films are great good entertainment and a great laugh I always enjoy them

This man's sick, get some brandy!!! These movies are so bad it's awesome. There are so many great one liners in this movie.
Brandy was always the answer
One of my favorite Mantan Moreland movies. Also the Charlie Can movies from the 1930s & 1940s.A very good Comic Actor and Character Actor.
Charlie Can! 😆
Anything with Mantan Moreland i is compulsory viewing for me. March, 2023.
Love watching the old shows I grow up watching.
Thank you for posting such great movies! We LOVE Mantan Moreland!
The great Mantan Moreland. Arguably his best movie. I bought the DVD and watch it every Halloween.
Thx for this Mantan Moreland classic movie. He always brings a smile to my old face.
Mantan gets the last word in this one! Good movie , thank you for posting.
"Does I have to? Can I draw you a map or something?" Phenom movie!
Thoroughly enjoyed this nostalgia.
Mantan is one of the funniest actors EVER
I saw this as a kid in 1953., Scary movie.Best zombies ever.
They definitely weren't acting LOL
I have never been scared of zombies! I'm only scared of live people!!!😮
These films are a treasure of vanishing Vaudeville wit and the stereo-types of the day.
Some of Mantan's Zombie "crew" really nailed their look. Oscar worthy zombies.
Billed third, but Mr.Moreland is the real star...''move over boys,I'm one of the gang''...
Just like Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. Third billing, but he's the real star of that movie.

Mantan was a great actor.
Most folks can’t see how cutting edge Mantan Moreland was by his subtle subversion of his racial caste in these movies…
