- Abby is a 1974 American blaxploitation horror film about a woman who is possessed by an African sex spirit. The film stars Carol Speed as the title character, William H. Marshall and Terry Carter. It was directed by William Girdler, who co-wrote the film's story with screenwriter Gordon Cornell Layne.
The film was a financial success, grossing $4 million in a month, but was pulled from theaters after the film's distributor, American International Pictures, was accused of copyright violation by Warner Bros., which saw the film as being derivative of The Exorcist and filed a lawsuit against AIP.[1] Girdler himself told the Louisville Courier Journal: "Sure, we made Abby to come in on the shirttail of The Exorcist." The film is also inspired by 1968's Rosemary's Baby. - Wikipedia

I had to watch this after hearing of the passing of Carol Speed. I just remember her on the Sanford and Son episode where she stood up Lamont at the wedding in the very 3rd episode. She was something in this movie and nearly had me convinced she was really possessed. Also great seeing William "Blacula" Marshall in the film as well. Thanks ReelBlack & RIP Carol Speed.
❤
Rest in Peace, Carol Speed. And thank you, reelblack, for this great film!
The incomparable William Marshall, one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. He gave an incredible performance even in this!
When the exorcist came out thank God I was too young to see it cause folks in my house was seriously traumatized but when this came out , me and some friends just had to sneak in and check this out. Worse mistake of my young life !! This movie messed all of us up for months !! Couldn't nobody sleep and constantly thinking folks in the house was possessed. Needless to say they had no problems getting us to go to church after that.
@Nettie Reynolds
You are not alone, trust me that.
You were right not to see the exorcist when you were young. I am also traumatized by it, for the last 48 years.
@Nettie Reynolds
Now a-days though , these kids aren't fazed by stuff like we were. When my boys were young they watched this with me and laughed but I also watched the exorcist with them and all that laughing stopped.

We lived in DC at the time and finding out that the exorcist happened somewhere close was too much for me. I moved down south with my grandparents and finally got some sleep.
Messed me up too watch age 13 ongoing dreams of her hideous face in my dreams at her worse possession state!
NOW THIS IS GREAT HORROR...WITHOUT ALL THE DRAMATICS....THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME IN PUTTING OUT THE MOVIES😍
The Dramatics wasn’t in the score
Carol Speed played the HELL out of that role!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 She was underrated. I wish she worked past the 70s. RIP Carol…

She sure did
What! She died?
She left Lamont Sanford at the alter

Exactly! They were underrated and if they were working today, they would be huge, working actors!! They limited African American actors back then. They didn’t give them the best equipment or sets to work with. Regardless, they STILL were superb!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I remember watching this movie in the 70's, I was a kid this movie scared the hell out of me 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Marshall was great as Blacula.
Big time ! You could tell that he was very serious about his craft.
Othello and blacula.. classical pianist and Actor! Miss him! The Height.. The voice!
Indeed he was!
@Lance Lanny I agree that this movie was so lousy that it was a joke, but I did like Marshall as an exorcist. With that powerful voice, he could literally scare the devil out of someone! lol
One of the greatest voices in the business
Carol Speed was also in The Mack as one of Goldie's ladies and she was also on Sanford and Son. She was the one that stood up Lamont at the altar!
After begging my mom, she finally took me and my sister to see this movie. I can still remember leaving that cold theater, scared to death and numb from head-to-toe. I remember smelling the popcorn and staring at the "Abby" movie poster on the wall. I was only 9 years old, but I'll never forget this film.
That was very descriptive. You really took me there! I know exactly how you felt.
A cold fond memories.im watching it right now it looks familiar I'll c.
I was small around this time. My siblings were all teenagers and forced to babysit me, had to drag me EVERYWHERE. They took me to see "Carrie" when I was six, giving me a lifelong distaste for VEGETABLE PEELERS, lol!

I love this comment section- some people seem genuinely shaken and others are HOWLING with laughter :)
Thats a damn shame. This movie was pulled from the theater's because of vopywrite b.s.? No, what is was that The big shot company Warner Brothers saw this movie was getting too much publicity and $$ . Fearful because it was a all black cast and even though it was a "low budget" movie, it was drawing a lot of attention. Its all good when they steal and copy ; they get away with it and make billions. And we cant do anything about it. But let the situation be reversed, they get angry and jealous ,and find a way to end and stop the growth of $$ or anyway to keep us down. Can't win for losing. But overall, its still a great movie. I was in middle school when this came out.
I don't see how this low budget movie got so much attention to where it was removed from theaters. It came out around the same time as _The Exorcist,_ a much bigger movie with a huge box office draw.
I remember seeing this & The Exorcist in NYC in the 70's when I was very young with My Father & Brother.
Warner brothers stays on bullshit I see why prince fought they're ass but at least he got back his music until they killed him for it
the exorcist released december 26 1973 abby released december 25 1974 and it showed thru 1979 at the drive ins still makin money..yes it got attention it has william marshall who played blacula and carol speed from the mack and juanita moore from imitation of life and the mack
abby need's to be remade ..i read that william peter blatty who wrote the exorcist saw the film and he had no problem with it he even tried talkin to warner bros tryin to talk them outta suing

R.I.P. BLACULA ,A.K.A. WILLIAM MARSHALL....
I heard this film was actually kicking ass at the box office until Warner Bros filed a lawsuit for copyright infringement and they pulled it from the theaters.
Correct. Made 4 million at the box office in a month.
I see where Marner bros got there ideas from now....
Yes now I understand why Time Warner sued because they were jealous of this film making millions these same a-holes who also killed Brother Prince decades later because He won all of His copies of His records
@@arncoo63 Assuming you mean Warner Bros., not Time Warner, I would say they were more than justified to sue the movie company for this film. If someone stole an idea from you and made millions off of it, what would you do?

Little known fact. Abby was pulled from the theater s early because Warner bros sued saying that it mimicked the exorcist too much. Wow.
They was hating because the movie made 4 million in a month or so. Black films wasn't suppose to be that successful in that time. So maybe it wasn't necessarily your mom's that kept you from seeing the film when it first came out.
I love how aggressive William Marshall voice really is

@Demetri Little thank You I didn't know that the producer of the Exorcist was part of "Abby" that's why those racist clowns at Time Warner or WB were jealous and sued for they claim was fraudulant but Hollywood folks copied off everybody all the time so what's the difference with the Exorcist & this film? I commend the Exorcist producer more than them racist jokers at WB who made the Exorcist who were just jealous of the success of Abby when She came out & made millions no telling about Worldwide wouldn't be a surprise if Abby made anything overseas like Bad Boys franchise today!

@@dianne8340 I too saw it as a kid when it first came out in theaters, and even then I thought it was more comedy than horror. Although it's an obvious urban rip off of the Exorcist, it wasn't scary like the Exorcist, because it was created on a very low budget. In contrast to the Exorcist, the actors were terrible and the cheap special effects were cheesy. It played out like a big joke to me.

William Marshall was one of the most underrated actors ever. Why wasn't he in bigger films is still a mystery
No mystery. There's a simple reason: he was a black dramatic actor. Historically, black dramatic actors have struggled in getting leading roles in Hollywood.

This is a GREAT MOVIE to learn from a spiritual perspective about the demonic and how it operates within the human flesh. She did a fabulous job playing the role of being possessed.
Demon-possessed "Abby" had me laughin' and trippin' throughout the entire movie. So, what if "Abby" is similar to the "The Exorcist"?! I don't care! How many horror-genre movies have been made about Count Dracula and vampires, mummies, zombies, werewolves, the Invisible Man (like "Hollow Man"), Dr. Frankenstein's Monster, demonic possession, serial killers and/or slashers (like "Friday the 13th", "Halloween", and "Scream"), doppelgangers, deadly, sadistic games (like "Saw" and "Escape Room"), and cannibalistic, serial-killing, inbred, rural families living in the backwoods and/or obscure places (like "The Hills Have Eyes", "Wrong Turn" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre"), etc.? This is the first time I've seen "Abby" -- thanks for the upload. I love this channel's flair for the nostalgia. Thank you, "reelblack".
Marshall was and always will be my all time favorite Black actor. I really wish they would've cast him in something truly epic!

I remember this! Thank you so much.
This explains a lot! I immediately recognized the name of the film, probably from pre-release advertising. But I did not recognize one scene, probably because the film was pulled prior to its being shown in Oakland. Of course there are some resemblances to The Exorcist, but I don't see enough to sustain a lawsuit. The big money always wins! Wait a minute! I wasn't even in Oakland in 1974!
😆 lol.
