This expansive old cemetery is used by some area residents & workers almost like a park. It's beautiful and peaceful, folks go there to eat lunch, jog, or dog-walk in a quiet place. There are also 2 little lakes, with ducks and one with lots of turtles
Oh yes before Covid i use to see all kinds of people gathering. After everything loosened up and they reopened they’re only allowing two days a week “ recreational use” but if you have cemetery business then you can go in any day of the week. I guess the residents of Oakland who are trying to visit family members in the cemetery were finding it a disturbance that so many people were allowed to go in there and so much was going on I guess.
@@CryptDoor in Victorian times people did spend time at cemeteries. More like you mentioned. Picnics, strolls etc.
Need to start carrying a high power flashlight, so you can illuminate the dark crypts, like the chocolate maker family. Love your work.
Love spending time here. We have 4 generations there near the Civil War soldiers. We also bring flowers to Elizabeth Short (Black Dahlia) when we visit.
I want to look in them all! 👀
Thanks for a great tour!
The Coleman family mausoleum was built by John W. Coleman Jr.
He was an early pioneer in the telegraph industry, and was President of San Francisco and North Pacific Coast Railroad.
Thank you so much for the info on this one 👍
@@CryptDoor you’re welcome! There are great stories about this family.
Coleman or Goldman? 🤣
Sorry, anytime I hear either last name I immediately think of the Birdcage! “ Goldman, the D is silent.” 🤣🕺🏼
A coin left on a headstone lets the deceased soldier's family know that somebody stopped by to pay their respect. A penny means you visited. A nickel means you and the deceased veteran trained at boot camp together. A dime means you and the deceased veteran served together in some capacity.
This is my first time seeing beautiful and peaceful CEMETERY I EVER COME ACROSS
FROM SAN RAFAEL CALIFORNIA
So beautiful and peaceful. Come to find out my husband’s grandparents are buried there so I see a trip in my near future.
As someone mentioned Bechtel (pronounced Beck-tell) is a big engineering / construction family starting with railroads and moving into other big projects. The company is still a major construction engineering company and I dealt with them in a peripheral way on a project this year. According to Wikipedia they are still family owned.
That's always nice to hear, family that keeps the business alive!
In college we had at least one building that was donated by them.
Bechtel Corporation
Hi Tony, the heiress to the Folger coffee company was Abigail Folger, she was murdered by the Charles Manson crime family , Sharon Tate was murdered at the same time.
Always very interesting checking out these crypts! Makes me wonder if anyone ever visits any of these at all or are they long forgotten.....?
I know sometimes in these there’s evidence of visitation like fresh flowers or the fact that they’re swept out and kept really nice
I do! One of my old friends is buried there. He passed in 1987. When I go to pay respects to him. I dont forget to pay respects to the historical impact of those buried here.
After 3rd generation none visits. Laces are lost and the great grandchildren don't visit anymore. Like this.
Thank you very much for another great video Tony. I am glad that these family mausoleums are in
pretty much good condition, and
that the families or descendents
are taking care of the upkeep, for
the most part. The size of the opening of some of these crypts
make me think that the caskets
the deceased are buried in are
very small. Thank you.
Amazing video! I love seeing beautiful resting places. These folks were definitely loaded!
Thank You!
Thank you!!!! my dad is buried in Mt. View & where I will go next to him. he's right below millionaires row. I have always loved visiting him.
They may have been rich when alive, but death is the great economic equalizer. There are no pockets in a burial shroud.
Love the architecture of the crypts on millionaires row. Thank you for sharing.
Like how you look inside Snd find out who these people very interesting thankyou
Very nice video something I've never seen before and i lived in Piedmont for 15 years. Keep up the good work.
That Coleman crypt is unbelievable!
Freeborn is my favorite one. I go up there once every week to just breath, eat my lunch. Love the video!
WOW man, best vid so far for me i think,, I LOVEEEEEE mausoleums so much, Beautiful and so creepy, Epic, Thank you so much for this one,, Stay safe and big thanks from me in the UK
OOOHhhh i so cannot wait for part 2, yippee lol
Thank You
Very interesting, and at such a big and beautiful cemetary. Great video!
The "Ghirardelli" mausoleum nees a bit of a power wash and spiffing up. I note on the open ones that marble is getting nasty. I wonder if acids from the air pollution and mold are taking a toll? The "Clift" mausoleum looks to hold a numer of cremation in one of the vaults. Maybe still used? I love Egyptian revival. There are some real wild ones. Good walk around. It gives on the impression that maintenance is a family issue. Too bad company founders graves are not kept up by the firm they founded. I see this in other sites also.
Much respect to those who respect those who are often times forgotten, but, are loved. Thank you! From a US Army Retired (1982 - 2005) Iraq Combat War Veteran Queen 💯. Peace & Blessings 🙏🏾. Stay safe out there. A new Subscriber
Thank You For Watching, Subscribing and Your service. 🙏
Danielle, Thank you for your Service!🕊️🇺🇸💕
I bet you didn’t see much combat old lady, but keep pretending
Jewish people leave stones as a mark of visiting. We generally do not leave flowers.
I see. Thank You 😊
Lots of great history on Millionaire Row. Ghirardelli is still my favorite "hometown" chocolate. A cousin sends me a "care" package of the fresh yumminess at least once a year.
Very interesting , first time I have watch a millionaires row tombs.
$$$$$$$Millionaire’s Row full of Historical Stories and Hope Those Families will return To Honor them as in years Past more families did… Awesome video 👩💻👏✌🏻☕️
It´s interesting how the architecture of the cemetery is so different from the czech cemetery architecture. Great video!
Yes most definitely I love seeing cemeteries from all over the world. Thank you for watching
Also, i know that some people believe that leaving small stones/pebbles, coins, etc. On a gravestone or nearby is them showing their respects and leaving them some sort of offering or sign of peace. A lot of the real paranormal investigators tend to do that too, to show a sign of peace and that they mean no disrespect. Although there are also a couple of different reasons why people have done this in the past that differ from why they do it today. Some think that this act of showing respect dates back alll the way to the roman empire! Like..the BC dates! Which is just crazyy to think a tradition can really carry on thaat long!
It's also a Jewish tradition rather than placing flowers which will wilt and die.
@@ilanamillion8942 Oh wow, I didn't know that it is a Jewish tradition too! I love learning new things so thank you for sharing this =)
Your a GOOD NARRATOR!
Nice to see several Greenwood folks in their post-mortal hilltop home. I believe some of them hailed from Sunnyvale, a city nearby.
Super duper awesome!!!! 😊 yes, I love Ghirardelli🍫🍫🍫🍫 Unfortunately, I'm Type 2 diabetic
What an amazing cemetery
This is really cool! Thx
It’s a Jewish custom to place a stone or pebble on a headstone to indicate that you have visited the grave and to indicate respect for the deceased. Adding a stone was also seen as taking part in the Mitzvah of Matzevah or the ‘setting of stone.’
21:30 Look to the extreme left; the Miller crypt was opened for a cremation as late as 2004.
Awesome video. Can’t wait for part 2
It’s there.. I did those videos almost a year ago
I love the crypts
As I understand stones left on a grave means someone visited. Coins can be left to pay the toll to cross the river stix. Coins on a veterans grave have different meanings.
Awesome thank you….
@@CryptDoor you are welcome😊🙏🇺🇸
I'd swear I saw the place in an old episode of the tv series Columbo (from around the 1970s-1980s). After so many decades, I've finally solved the mystery of the location of that beautiful place. It's in Oakland. Curious.
people leave stones to show they've been there so when other family members visit, they know the dead have been visited and not forgotten. each stone represents someone's respects.
Very well done!
Thank you
Beautiful
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS
You should get a plumbers video scope
I’ve used one before: Endoscope Family Crypt Experiment | Cemetery Exploration ruclips.net/video/LZXe8PJ7hHc/видео.html
@@CryptDoor thx man I will check it out!
Looks like Becktel family was a and is a construction company..helped build railroads and Hoover dam...love your stuff as always!!!
Thank You 👍
Bechtel were the engineering firm for the original Bay Area Rapid Transit.
Frank Monroe Greenwood was the President of Monroe-Greenwood Estate Co. SF Cali. DOB Dec 11 1862 Died 1932. His wife Nellie is in crypt #4. His daughter was Marion Greenwood Rieger. Monroe Greenwood was the Treasurer of Telegraph Co. They are lineal decedents of William Wood an early settler circa 1638 Concord Mass. IN
nevermind, i _did_ hear about that chocolate bar. had 2 look up the label 1st b4 i could make a decision. its a rare belonging.
I'd like to know which Miller family members were buried outside of the last mausoleum that you talked about here.! Good video!
We can always do a revisit. That one cemetery is the only one that still has strict guidelines about when we’re able to go inside. I would only be allowed in there Wednesday or Saturday so I’ll probably plan it for one of those days in the future
Love your videos...and Charles Crocker is buried there
Thank You!
I have a bag of his chocolates now!
Monroe Greenwood- electrician, Treasurer of Telegraph Co., and realtor.
For the longest time I thought that the Bechtel family mausoleum was related to the Bechtel engineering and construction firm. The founder of Bechtel, Warren Bechtel, is interred in the main mausoleum along with his son, Stephen D. Bechtel, who succeeded him, and his grandson, Stephen D. Bechtel Jr. who just died in 2021. Their spouses and other members of the family are in the main mausoleum as well. Warren’s father is named John Moyer Bechtel and is buried in Kansas where Warren had a farm before starting his business in the Oklahoma territory. I think it’s a coincidence that there is a John Bechtel also at Mountain View cemetery, but I’d venture to say that the Bechtel mausoleum isn’t related to the big Bechtel corporation. I used to frequent Mountain View cemetery before the pandemic and would read up on the history of folks interred there for fun.
This is sweet, thanks. Are cars allowed there, or were you just enjoying the California weather?!
Cars are allowed but when you get up on millionaires row, the road gets kind of narrow so I was just enjoying the walk and the weather.
@@CryptDoor Thanks! I'll be coming from Massachusetts when I visit in March and I want to be prepared!
My fave chocolate....back when things were Real. Please, get a flashlight...
I spent my youth in there 1970s
That gate at night didn't stop anybody who was set on getting in, I did it once
John Sanborn Doe- Importer of doors and windows.
Chocolate is a money maker.
Question..... so as those crypts continue to (slowly) disintegrate, what will become of the dead interred inside them when the buildings totally fall apart & the coffins & the corpses are exposed?
From what I’ve been told, the families are responsible for it or you may be charged a certain percentage more when you purchase for the care and upkeep
The only rich folks left in Oakland 😪
HEYYY! CAN YOU DO MILLIONAIRES ROW FOR THE STOCKTON RURAL CEMETERY IN STOCKTON CA!?
I was thinking about getting back out there soon.
William Clift- Mining interests, part owner Pacific Gas Improvement Company, managed quicksilver (mercury) mine, president California Lighting Company, Eureka Lighting Company, Pacific Surety Company, Hutchinson Sugar Plantation and Oakland Bank and Savings.
Let’s all have a moment of silence for the founders of the Folgers Coffee Company.
Hi .Joseph and his wife are buried there.
Pronounced Becktel, there is a Bechtel Constructon...maybe?
betchel owend salloons in brooklyn manhattan staten island heey was president of his company
Nice! Thank You! 👍
It’s really sad that this cemetery is treated as a park now and the mayor basically forced the Cemetery to get rid of certain boundaries so ppl can treat it like a playground, it’s rare to see respectful ppl there and at that the cemetery had a problem with ppl having off leash dogs and dog feces being everywhere ! It’s ppl who are calling it a park or treating it like a personal playground, a lady I know visited her family and was greeted with dog poop on her 5 year olds grave , she had a meltdown and people who are grieving / mourning are greeted by joggers and dogs running around. And I was reading an article where a woman names Brandy was offended she was told “We aren’t a park” by a worker , and ppl getting mad they can’t have unleashed and non service dogs in the cemetery ! It’s so selfish and heartbreaking 💔 people sit , spit , and disrespect the graves , I want my uncle removed from there , they can have it. It’s rare to see ppl actually interested in the historical aspects and paying respect
Historical aspect of it, I’m all for like when I was there before a couple times I saw some field trips, school kids. I’m sure they were there for some kind of history field trip.
A little late on this one. I had a sinus infection but doc says it was covid. I spent 5 days in bed. Never been that sick before hopefully never again too. Anyway John Betchtel was born in Niederolan Germany. He died from a heart condition. He lost his only child a son John jr to TB in 1881 who is probably the other person in the moseleum with them. Frim his Will: His wife and him raised a child Ida from infancy but never legally adopted her. She was 8 at his time of death When he passed his 5 brothers and sisters fought the will to try and get the child's half of his estate. The judge ordered against them and they gave up. His parents were George and Eva. He owned 1/16 of a schooner the "C F Crocker" which is how he made his money. From what I've found tge ship hauled lumber. His wife paid $402.75 for undertaker Bill H Evers services and $1034.50 for the cemetery lot and grading. He had 5k in 1 bank and $400 in another bank when he died.
Wow! . 🙏 thank You!
Stones left at a grave is a Jewish tradition. A penny is a sign of a visit, other coins have other meanings for the graves of military members.
Bechtel is pronounced, Beck tell..
Thank you for clarifying that. I am bad at pronouncing certain names
Why it's limited open?
That was filmed during Covid and they had closed it down and then re-opened it, but had limited days for certain activities.
That cemetery is much like a public park. People go there to walk their dogs to jog, etc. a lot of the people visiting loved ones felt it was disrespectful to have so much stuff going on there and wanted days where they could just visit in peace so they have certain days for recreational use and certain days for visiting loved ones.
@@CryptDoor Oh I don't like it it's used as public park.
Respect for the death I've learned
I don’t think it’s officially labeled a park, but it does attract a lot of people because it has areas to walk in the hills.
Because of some of the burials there and the historical aspect, there are schools who go there for field trips so the children can learn about the different people buried within
@@CryptDoor It look likes a very interesting and historical cemetery.
Is it still active, I mean with new burials?
It is not pronounced Bech tel, it is Beck tel, as in Bechtel Corp. one of the largest construction corporations in the world.
Bechtel Corporation? Guessing.
Most of his family are buried there..
The leaving of stones is a Jewish tradition,
It's a jewish tradition to leave a stone at the grave.
Pronounced Becktel.
I like to have a crypt but thay or $$$$$$$ to much
Why call the interiors of mausoleums ‘crazy’ just because they hold a number of coffins of a particular family? Whatever you may think of the mausoleums or the people deposited therein, I definitely do not think ‘crazy’ is a respectful term. The authorities owning the cemetery hold details of every deposit of burial, so some research undertaken by you would answers your questions, ie why a coffin may have been removed from one place to another
Well, the designs and how grand they are always amazes me because you don’t see a lot of stuff like that anymore. As for my use of words in the moment, I say what I say no disrespect meant. That video was made a while back when I first discovered that section and I was in awe. ….. P.S go through my comment section and you’ll see a majority of the viewers like and appreciate what I do
