It’s interesting that self pleasure can as an adult is and can be understood as a lonely act rather than an act of self exploration or expression. There’s little popular depiction of asexuality and how those who don’t desire such types of connections thusly the act becomes an internal experience rather than an external preforming or shared presence for/with another.

Also I agree about poor things, a lot was left out in terms of exploring the female experience via sexuality and beyond. In the book it explore all of that and more yet it’s reinterpreted so differently.

the first scene that comes to mind when i think about masturbation in media is from lisa hanawalts tuca and bertie. bertie masturbates in a bathroom after being the victim of harrassment by her boss and culinary idol. this isnt an expression of loneliness (though she is an anxious mess) or of being pathetic (though she is a bit of a sad bird) but of trauma and a way to cope with her childhood abuse. tuca and bertie is a colorful cartoon show about anthropomorphic birds, so the sudden contrast with that sort of behaviour really shocked me. the closest thing i can think of is the part in baby reindeer in which donnie jerks off to a photo of his stalker, which really puts into perspective how complicated trauma responses are.

I see your point about Poor Things' optimism towards sex work, I think the film tackles so much that there's parts where its commentary feels less sharp.
However, as you pointed out with the disparity between men and women's masturbatory representation, I think there's been a lack of sympathetic portrayals of sex workers that don't feel like they're talking past them. Seeing someone who views sex work as any other way to make money, even considering the pros and cons of it in the long term while chosing to help her colleagues is refreshing. I don't think it's a perfect portrayal, it definitely lacks nuances and it's unfortunate that this and Bella's only queer relationship are both included in this part of the film and thus are fighting for space.
I think what I'm also missing from more representations of this act are more queer and kinky examples. I know there's been a long running stereotype of queer people as deviants, but at the end of the day masturbation is a part of sex. And when we stigmatize it or only show it as a necessity for single people or an extension of a character's loneliness, it casually fits in with the social belief that these are shameful acts.
There's def been some push back on sexuality in film, possibly as a tepid response to MeToo & Times Up, but I hope we see more examples like Sanctuary, Poor Things, and Saltburn that understand the eroticism and shame that can come with these acts without echoing the shameful rhetoric that surrounds them.
