Ah, the way life was before Covid.
When I was a boy (60 yesrs ago now) all the assistants wore tailcoats. Ladies were seated in small gilded chairs while the assistants helped them choose what they wanted. " can you show me something in tinned peaches?" "Certainly madam" and off he trotted to bring back a selection to be placed before her. A bygone age.

Two things I started immediately to miss during lockdown : hugs and tearooms/cafés.
That's right!!! In my country, Greece is very common hugs and kisses, especially among close friends and family members!!!
Absolutely and for me church, and hugs at church.
I love the color of those cannisters, tea cups and teapots.
The colour is called eau de nil. It literally means water of the Nile. It was very fashionable in the 19th century when Egyptology was in its early years.

High tea is a substantial meal including twa and often cakes and pies eaten in the early evening particularly in the North and Midlands of England where the main meal is actually eatsn at lunchtime and frequently called dinner too. So 'tea' is a less substantial meal than dinner but far more than afternoin tea which is a lovely late afternoon refreshment of tea cakes ans savoury pastries and often scones toi. Cream tea is something different again. Tea scines clotted cream and jam. .try them all if you visit UK . afternoon tea is frequently called high tea in other countries. Colleagues if mine once told me they would live to have English.High.Tea. so I invited them and made high.tea. Oh dear they were disappointed
I worked as a waitress in the Fountain Restaurant in the 80's - my first job as a teenager, and loved it. Nice memories flooded back seeing this.

I used the Fountain regularly back then. Ground floor, at the back. Before the store was enlarged. Loved it.
@@mscott3918 That's right.... it had the soda bar then too. John Hurt would often sit up at the bar and have a chat... so many wonderful celeb's (without inflated ego's )back then :))

We do 3 things with every trip to the UK. After freshening up following our flight, we go to Fortnums for tea first. We decompress and welcome ourselves back to Britain. We love Fortnums so much that we bought the F&M full tea set and had it shipped home to enjoy when we can’t be in London.
Ooh I say. Rather fun
I wanted to do that but wasn’t sure about getting it shipped and that section was so crowded. I did manage to get the tiered plate server because I cauldron fit that in my luggage. I wrapped it in clothes and prayed it wouldn’t break.
That is my ritual as well. Get from Heathrow to the hotel and straight to Fortnum's. Nothing like it in the world.
Have you had tea at any other place (ie. Ritz) and would you recommend any others? Going in a few weeks.

The savoury afternoon tea in F&M is probably THE best thing in the world! Add some bubbly to it and you are set.
My dream is to visit London again grew up there high tea and a walk through knightsbridge where we stayed fond memories from Pretoria South Africa 😇🙏🍵🚶♂️🎉🎊
I am fasting right now. This very moment. Started 4 hours ago and still have 8 hours left. Blood test. Mandatory fasting. I am watching this to really, really wreck myself emotionally. Why? Because right now; this moment, I'm hungry, anxious and this tea service looks like pure clean heaven to me. It's all I can think about. Heaven.
I wish I could to go back before 2020 and Covid-19 and have a fancy tea in London and chat with my lady friends. I want the world safe, sane and civil. I am beginning to believe that world I wish for will never be.

Sounds dreamy! Although I assume you mean afternoon tea? High tea included a savory dish, afternoon tea is tea sandwiches, scones and cakes!

My very first visit to London in 1995 I had tea in that very room at Fortnums. It’s like time travel to another era when people slowed down to drink a proper cup of tea, no cell phones, and at that time they had a trio playing while you dined.

I love tea for lunch I'm not British I just drink tea like I am someday I would love to have Tea at Fortnum and Mason
My grandfather always used to go to Fortnums for hampers and goodies on his business trips to London, and we always had foie gras and caviar at special occasions as a child (this was the 80s so I had no idea about foie gras). I miss him terribly, and seeing this brings back memories of my handsome, eccentric and debonair grandfather! I prefer Betty's tea rooms in Harrogate but it still looks lovely and elegant. Wouldn't go there in jeans and sneakers though.
Edit re the horse, I used to go horse riding as a child, and it's a signal to stop the ride. It doesn't hurt, and stimulates their muscles. I adore animals and would be incensed with cruelty but this isn't, but I can understand why it looks that way.

Having been to quite a few places in London for afternoon tea, I have to recommend F+M as my favourite. While the Goring and the Dorchester are nice, F+M has the best food
My grandfather adored the Dorchester to stay in on business trips!

Alan Mac Yup. I think a lot of people over here (North America) get confused because a lot of our tea shops call it "high tea" when it really should be afternoon tea. Probably someone somewhere heard "high tea" and thought it sounded posh.

I've had afternoon tea twice and Fortnum & Mason and it's delightful. The service is perfect. I never did get cake I was so stuffed with scones, my favorite. I was too stupid and full to ask our waiter if he could add some cake to our "doggie bag". I know he would have done that. It would have been nice to eat later in the evening in the hotel. LOL The BEST thing at Fortnum and Mason is the Blood Orange Marmalade. I brought three jars home and almost cried when I finished the last of it. I bought one of their tote bags, they sell them in the food court. Love it and along with a gorgous tea towel, they give me happy memories.

Lobster Drumkilbo, introduced in 2012 for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. It was the Queen Mother's favourite, it's like a posh prawn cocktail. My favourite too, absolutely gorgeous!
I like F&M tea ,and everything about the store ,but there are other places for afternoon tea with better values

My youngest daughter and husband lived just outside London for 16 years, this brings back so many great memories. His job took them Tokyo, Japan for two years from there. They have beautiful tea ceremonies.
