  • In today’s video, Ava & Jinx are just two of the four blue throated macaws on our flight trip in the Arizona desert. I am hoping that they can all get along!

Aww, Jinx and Ava will be partners before you know it, but as you said Jamie, it's their process and it has to go at their pace. When I saw Jinx all puffed up on the top of
Ava's cage, it seemed like a positive signal. Jamie, you're doing great! Thanks for sharing.👍❤️

I've been working with a rescue B&G Marco who started out just flying to my shoulder when let out. She's now flying to my hand and I just realized that the positioning of your hand when you call Jinx/Ava is quite different then what I've been doing and noticed that's how you're able to get their feet in the pocket of your hand to grab. Thanks so much for sharing. I've been learning so much from your channel. I volunteer at a sanctuary/rescue in British Columbia, Canada. Marco will allow me to touch her feet, so I'm going to give your positioning a try next Tuesday. It's these little nuances that make all the difference.

Hey folks, is it just me or does JamieLeigh have a “Certain Glow” ☀️ ✨ about her?
Just a random observation as I watched her.
Maybe it’s that Jinx & Ava are getting along so well & making GLOWING PROGRESS?
Don’t know but she’s looking very bright.

I’m so impressed with the precision your training shows in their response. You’re having so much fun and the birds are waiting for your que. BTW Bubbalicious has become quite the ambassador, I’ve had him four years now, been watching you longer. Glad I didn’t give up on him as we keep learning together how to communicate and be content together. Hugs 🤗

Frequent lurker here, don't even have a bird (chickens don't count). Try to switch your perspective a little bit more.
Jinx is tied to you and in tune with you, since you have witnessed him hating on other birds you've learned to expect it and the more it happened the more your body will subconsciously tense up it can even be a minor change in your voice. It might even be so subtle for everyone to notice but animals that are really in tune like he is will know it right away and instinctively do what you're feeling. Keep in mind that your tone of voice is the same when you're talking to him when you're just chilling and the same when he gets mad (like in a video where Dave brought Ava in the house), he can understand that as a confirmation of his feelings and that he should feel that way.
In my opinion the reason this system now works is because Dave set the tone and when you enter the picture you're thrilled and happy and in doing so you guys skipped the whole intro and the circle of "hate" behavior was broken.
Now back to my binge watching

You guys are the best. Y'know, I've always geard male birds generally do better aith female owners and vice versa, but this video got me thinking, maybe that's only partially true. I guess it depends on what you consider "better," better as in better behaved, I actually don't think so. Better as in training, I REALLY don't think so. But maybe more emotionally and hormonally involved? Like, think about it, Jinx has problems with hormones mostly in the spring, but we know you have sometimes been more of a trigger for him.... Interestingly, it seems as for training, Ava seems more receptive, attached, and can progress at a faster pace with you vs Dav. Vice versa with Jinx. Like you said, it looks like whilst your relationship with Jinx prior to Ava was that Jinx would be quite goofy and attached to you, but mostly what I saw was a hormonal response or when he would get way too involved and often got kinda crazy, which is super funny and cute to watch, but it's interesting isn't it? I can see how he would do better training with Dav in the presence of Ava, since you are more of the trigger for him vs Dav, he can focus on Dav and work with Dav more deeply which is interesting and amazing to see such progress. For Ava, I think you're less of an emotional trigger and Ava seems overall more able to focus with you, though I haven't seen much interaction between her and Dav yet either. Overall I think this is a very new experience for you guys and I think this is just the beginning and I'm sure you'll find that there's more experiences and more discoveries to be made, after all, we NEVER stop learning. I can't wait to see what else you'll discover with these wonderful, wonderful animals.
And overall, I think it's important to realize that different people form different bonds with even the same birds... And maybe that 60/40 rule is different than we ALL thought? For example, some people can be more of a hormonal trigger and other people can be more of a training figurehead thry look up to, but the response in both categories may be similarly eager. So it's a different relationship. Maybe it's worth it to dig deeper and explore that- perhaps working with certain birds with both people on the same subject, vs a different subject altogether, would elicit a different response in some animals to create an even better balance. Or maybe not idk. Just my .02 on the situation hehehe.
In any case, this video has been VERY eye-opening for me and I'm very happy and excited to explore this subject with my own animals and apply this in my own life. Thank you guys very much ror doing what you do best and for helping so many people and so many animals via this site... ❤ Love it, keep it coming ;)

Interesting. From the one video where you speak about Ava tending to fly in an arc to the right, it almost looks (again from this one view/one video) like she pushes off the perch to the right which is exaggerated for a moment during the first couple of wing flaps--but then she corrects and flies to you?? Maybe more of a dominant leg thing as we all have that? Just one theory based one video and zero research, lolz. Thank you as always for the amazing information and food for thought. 💙

Yes, we use food as a posistive reinforcer to get more of the behavior we want to see. In this case the behavior is recall training outside.

which pet bird is best to get. I have had experience with budgies, finches and Senegal parrot. I loved the Senegal parrots but they died and we ran out from where I was from. The store I am going to adopt a bird has Indian ringnecks, and Cockatiels. They have other birds but my family is only considering one of these for me. I really want a bird that will talk, be friendly, be funny, and overall be a companion to me. Out of these 2 which one do you think is best for me.

@@BirdTricks Fair and makes sense. Just the temp today really made me notice lol. I love watching your birds free flying. You're so in tune with them, that they become predictable and thoughtful. It's the best form of love, one that genuinely betters both of your experiences.

Are Ava & Jinx a "thing?" That is, are they a bonded pair? Or are they simply friendly or "tolerable" of each other at this point?

I dont think that will happen until they are close enough together that when seperated for some time they miss company and start a new relationship when rejoined.
