    I just have to say how beneficial it could be too many people knowing that Dave is allergic to bird dander and whatever, but still keeps them. I see so many animals being rehomed because of allergies and I know there’s many degrees of allergy but still, this is just a testament to the fact that it doesn’t always mean you can’t keep an animal! Awesome video, I love all of your set ups and each of your birds ❤

      If you're on Instagram, I post a lot more short content there of little behind the scenes stuff in my stories and reels. It's just easier to set up my phone and be like "hey, making breakfast and serving, how bout you?" without editing a full length video sometimes. So there's a lot more behind the scenes/get to know me feel over there just FYI. I will definitely try to prioritize sharing that more here though!

    Dave’s ALLERGIC? Jamie, you really are a treasure! Maybe he can get shots 💉for the birb allergy. 😉 You have a remarkably efficient setup. Those big rolls of butcher paper are marvelous. Yes, my pressure washer is truly my BEST FRIEND. Especially because pretty instantly, Cressi throws her gloppy mess allllll over the cage bars and it looks gross fast. So best way is definitely to wheel the aviaries outdoors and hose them down! In the winter though, I can't do that very easily at all.

    If I could give you a speed sweeping tip. Pick a sacrificial wall (I would recommend the wall between aviaries) and then you can be more aggressive about sweeping at it. If you sweep faster at the wall center and sweep first and then pick up it will not matter if it goes through to the other side as you have not picked up either yet. It might speed up that part just a little. :)

    Could you make a video about managing asthma/allergies when having birds? I grew up around animals I'm mildly allergic to and can cope with a lot, but I have no practical experience with birds. However, I have fallen in love with birds and my (long term) goal/dream would be to be able to adopt a couple of cockatiels, as there seem to be many in need of new homes around here, and I find their personality absolutely adorable. I would however hate it if I were to have to give them up againg because of asthma problems after having bonded with them. I know there are less dusty bird types, but is it hopeless to be thinking of cockatiels if you have mild asthma?

    • @lizziehn5928
      @lizziehn5928 Год назад

      It's not hopeless! There are several things you can do to help limit your allergies from flaring up. The main thing to have is an air purifier, they work to filter out all that cockatiel dander. If possible, you could also try allergy shots - they've really helped me and a lot of other people by allowing the body to get used to increasing amounts of allergens, though it does take years to fully complete.

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  Год назад

      The squirrels became total monsters when we tried to do that, wow... our house became the place to be and they became incredibly destructive so we do not do that anymore. I try to reuse toy parts when possible and we've considered a burn bin for the paper but more experienced people have told us it will just get really gross since everything will burn but the feces and it will smell real bad so haven't quite figured out a solution for all that.

    • @cindychapman5900

      @@BirdTricks Good points. We put out 2 bird feeders this year. Glad we did because it has been extra cold. Downside was, a rat got into our crawl space. Ick!
      I would wonder about the safety of burning the feces also in case it might create air-borne pathogens if one bird gets sick and is not yet showing symptoms. I have no idea if that would be a concern, because I do not have birds. But I love you guys.

    Question: living in Idaho in the winter...how do you expose bird's to sunlight for them to manufacture sufficient Vitamin D. I reside in upstate NY and am not convinced those avian lights are worth it or even really work. Interested to know if you've come up with a solution. We have a very long winter here.

    • @lizziehn5928
      @lizziehn5928 Год назад

      In my experience, the complete UV spectrum lights can really help in the winter (both for humans and birds)! They aren't quite as good as the sun, but during the winter they can make for a good replacement. I prefer the strips that can attach to walls around the cage

    • @BirdTricks
      @BirdTricks  Год назад

      Great question. We used those lights for years (about 14 years) and never saw a difference when we did our vet check ups. In fact we had a vet recommend the use of them and I was like, ummm... we have been using them for the last 14 years doc... so I have also shared the same feelings as you about how much they actually work. I wish I had a solution but I currently don't. Someone above suggested a set up where the birds can choose to go inside/outside on their own and I think that would be a dream set up!

      Oh, what animal and flower lovers endur from allergies. We have rescue bunnies and I am allergic to everything. I wear a mask in the bunny room but can still get infections in my sinuses. I would love a bird but know that would be a crazy choice for me to make.
      Note to Dave and Jaime: Suggest Dave try a Q Mask (lightweight, washable allergy mask) when he can. I bought it from The Allergy Store online in FL. May be available elsewhere. Can talk easily with it on, wash it, let dry overnight, use again, lightweight. I use 2 allergy pills daily, as well as spray. Use OT Nasacort or Flonase if Dave’s doctor allows. The nasal spray helps me I think more than just the tablet medicines. My husband says I have atomic sneezes sometimes😂.

    Love your videos😊. Why cannot the parrots get out for fresh air in the snow? Here they have a choice, to go outside no matter how cold or stay in. As long as they get enough food and can warm up inside ( best with a concentrated heatingsource) when they choose, they do fine outside even wintersnowtime.

    • @lizziehn5928
      @lizziehn5928 Год назад +1

      Their bodies are very sensitive to temperature changes. So long as it's not in the negatives, they could handle the temps if they were acclimated to em - but they aren't. They would be going from a very warm environment to a very cold one, which has the same effect as a draft indoors. Not great!

    • @marialindgren4112
      @marialindgren4112 Год назад

      @@lizziehn5928 ok I just know they can choose in many places here and it gets down to negative 20 degrees centigrade in the winter. Perhaps they are acclimated, they choose to go inside in the warmth if it's windy/wet.

      I wish we had a set up where they maybe had an attached door they could go through to go outside if they choose but we don't have anything like that. What is the reason , a bird needs 12 hours of sleep?

    • @lizziehn5928
      @lizziehn5928 Год назад

      In the wild, most birds will typically go to sleep just after the sun sets and wake up just before it rises. When they have fewer than 12 hours, this can tell their bodies that spring/summer are coming (or whenever their region has the most sunlight) which will in turn trigger hormonal behavior. Since we want to limit this sort of "mood", it's recommended that parrots have at least 12 hours of darkness.

    I loved seeing all the care you give your birds. Seeing how hard you work makes me really only want ONE small parrot. A Parrotlet or a Budgie. I just can't make my mind up. Gina Hetlage 🦜🐦
