Dear God, this reminds me of my 25 year old pal, Tula, a Scarlet Macaw. He was my pal, after only a few weeks, he climbed out of the large cage and spent time walking on my arm in Albany, Oregon. He was my pal. He drank from water fountains or with orange juice, walked through the local park, and he learned to talk...once he said, "Tula, come home" to himself after he walked into the house off the tree, cackling and laughing the whole time. He was only flying once, but still had full flight feathers. I sure miss him,my beautiful pal.

This (adoption) is pretty much the only way someone should end up owning a bird like this. They really just belong in the wild. Having said this, I'm a total bird lover, and would be the type of person to end up in this situation. Unfortunately, I know how long they live, and I have no children, so would never put a bird through this type of thing, unless it was a parakeet, or other bird that doesn't have such a long lifespan. I have a mustache parakeet and a Timneh African Grey. I’ve had them both since they were 4 months old . The mustache turned 29 in October, the grey will be 29 in April. They know me because they feel my heart. My grey started to pluck his feathers because I was emotionally distant. I teased and laughed and played with them but my Gabby knew the truth. I’ve managed to overcome my losses and I move forward every day. And it’s hard because I just lost a sister in April. I’ve controlled my feelings better so Gabby isn’t feeling bad for me.. I kinda feel that, but on the other hand I respect them for being honest & trying to rehome birds that have a good chance of a good life, rather than sending out ones that will likely come back to them over & over again, each time in a worse state than the last time, due to the rejection. By being honest with her, it also tests if she's really going to commit to a bird that most would find too much for them

@@LizzyDidntDoIt yeh, I see it more like a child with a bird, cause they're so intelligent, so like saying that a foster child is "crazy & you don't want him" It's horrible! but there are foster mums out there that are going to say "oh yes I DO want him! You watch me show you he's NOT crazy". So if it's done right & for the right reasons, it can be a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing, especially if done in front of the child/bird & the attitude carers use with the child/bird constantly tells them they're seen as crazy & unwanted by those caring for them. Doing that is the fastest way to make the child/bird act up & in the way they've been labelled.
I do hope they're just trying to match well & trying to do the most good for the most number of birds they can & it certainly is possible that's the case. I like to try to be positive & give people the benefit of the doubt, especially people engaged in activities like volunteering to rescue troubled birds, cause it's likely they're good people at heart, with good intentions

I don't have any experience with birds, only fostering dogs (and some cats), but I lived in a one-br apartment with two or three of my own, also worked full-time and volunteered in rescue then.
While I'd never say to an interested adopter "this dog's crazy, you don't want him/her", I think it's great that this woman kept visiting Vandal and developing a connection with him until she was sure. In my case, I'd usually say: "If I can do it, you can, too; but you've got to be willing to do whatever it takes." Interestingly, a few of the more challenging dogs got placed with adopters who then got involved in rescue as well (and were better at it than I was!) Meanwhile, my "foster fails" (who became my own) were the easiest, go figure. If you pose it as a challenge to someone, often they and you will know who's ready to rise to it.
I imagine that given how long these birds live, the attention they require, how they bond or how stressed they get with change, a rescue might rather they stay in sanctuary than to be returned for whatever reason.

Sadly, after having him for 20 years, I found him dead whilst I was pregnant. I was devastated and wish my daughter could’ve met him. She loves watching videos of him, and I recently had him tattooed on my leg so that in some way, he’s still with me.

Hilarious footage of Vandal looking at himself in the coffee table. All pets have to choose their owners, it's the only way that they can bond with you. I wanted a cat from the shelter in 2007, my husband wasn't keen. However he came to look with me and a tiny kitten who was sleeping woke, detached herself from other kittens, jumped/fell from a chair and clambered up my husband's leg. That was the one we had to have. In 2015 he was sick and had to spend 6 nights in hospital. Every night she would do a careful tour of the house looking for him before subsiding on his side of the bed. On the 7th day when he finally came home she couldn't believe it was him. She ran to him at the door mewing loudly, he crouched down and she stood up with her paws on his knee purring and telling him not to go away again and leave her. It was so touching. He is her person. In 2022, 16 years later she's still with us, ruling the roost.

Great job selecting the one that no one desires. Pets do select their owners and Vandal selected you. Macaws mature around 6 to 7 years and select their mate, which probably why he choose you and your husband. Keep making him part of the family. My macaw was a green-winged and bonded with my wife, but he became dangerous when we had a baby as he was too jealous. We found an older lady who lived alone and needed a companion and Rocky bonded with her quickly - a great match.

Kudos. Parrots can give so much unconditional love - they bond with their loved ones more intensely than a human - and that unconditional love can be healing and uplifting. Six years ago I went through a traumatic change when I got sick, lost everything and was even homeless for a while, and the only reason I'm still here is my parrots. They are flying antidepressants who can heal our pain, but they have to be treated with respect, dignity and compassion.

It's just pure kindness.
