This guy and Legacy Transmetal Megatron go perfectly together as rivals
If I recall, PotP's line gimmick was the "Primemasters" titan masters who turn into matrix cores corresponding to the Prime the titan master was supposed to be. Thus for the matrix to be able to actually hold the Prime Master, it needed the matrix's regular core to be the same shape
There was a secondary linewide gimmick: the Leader class Evolution gimmick. A lil' Deluxe (Orion Pax/Hot Rod/Optimus Primal) combines with a "trailer" to become Optimus Prime/Rodimus Prime/Optimal Optimus. (I intentionally omitted Rodimus Unicronus aka Rodimus Cron since it's the same mold as Rodimus Prime)
@@DragoonMS There was also an Amazon Exclusive Nemesis Prime retool for Orion/Optimus that was probably the best leader of the line. He did Legacy's visual gimmick a bit early by being a complete and utter mishmash of the most prolific versions of Nemesis Prime.
He looked like the standard G1 Nemesis Prime, had smokestack arm cannons and a Dark Star Saber like Armada Nemesis Prime, a Matrix of Chaos like Universe Nemesis Prime, and had a Mini-Con weapon partner named Giza, like the Nemesis Prime from Prime/Arms Micron
I remember you saying that you don’t get upgrade kits often but the DNA Design kit for this guy would be worth your while, at least I’d thinks so. From what I remember, there’s a piece of the kit that would probably solve your monke’s floppy head at the cost of “partsforming” per se.
Every time you say monkey, I'm immediately going to think about the live action Mario movie.

The part where Primal transforms in the trailer, even my wife was impressed with it. She's not really a TF fan, so that tells you something.
I think that the design for Optimus Primal's core vehicle mode, the surf board, is somewhat reminiscent of the Ark's escape shuttle they used at the end of Beast Wars. Just the front half reminds me of it.
I got the Throne version of this guy.
The joints held up much better, and he doesn’t even need to stand on his own.
I forgot about the vote for the next prime. If I remember correctly, arcee was also a contender and her name would've likely been arcana magnus (supposedly). I would've loved to have an arcee prime instead of the robo gorilla. Real missed opportunity right there

I resisted getting him at first, but I’m glad I got him. He definitely benefits from the DNA Design kit. Plus, you can remove a pin and have little Primal separate from the silver front end of his alt mode.

I got this figure, thou I upgraded him with the DNA kit that replaces the arm guards, gives him better guns to recreate the scene where he targeting Megatron in the season 3 openner, plus two large guns for him to wield in his hands, some wheels for his missing alt mode and much bigger wings, which improves his look pretty well, in terms of movement, he is the best of the three leader molds from that line, Rodimus is the worse, while OP, I could of easily seen a retool into Star Saber happening with that mold, but it never happened thou evenly we got Haslab Legacy Victory Saber!
I just think of Connor whenever Monkey is mentioned .... but then also the 70s Nippon TV seeies

I have a theroy about this toy, when they were putting out the poll originally star saber was one of the options and I imagine the team of hasbro though star saber would win cause the whole POTP leader gimmik just makes sense for star saber and they predesined this toy to be star saber, so when primal won they had to quickly redesign everything about it to make it into primal

Mine came in today, it tabs better and all, but I'm still mixed on it and all. You got a better price though.
It almost looks like one of thirteen from the alternate universe of IDW 1.0 when you use the matrix core as a headmaster
This remains one of my favorite Transformers of the Power of the Primes line.
I really need a masterpiece version of optimal Optimus
the 3rd party upgrades help, but the easiest free upgrade is pushing the pin out that holds the gray mass to smaller primals back. This allows the smaller figure to stand and look cleaner. The gray "shuttle" part can still attache to Monke mode or bot mode. another glaring problem that can be fixed with little effort is painting the cockpit. It should be orange.
I prefer it in grey, it stands out a little more and breaks up the dayglow a bit better.

It's an okay figure. Definitely needs both the DK08 & DK08+ kits from DNA Design. DK08 has: larger wings, the wheels for truck mode (the front wheel comes in halves, intended to be the jet mode turbines), a pair of swords for Optimus Primal (that look way better than the ones Hasbro did for Kingdom Optimus Primal), and these massive orange uzis (that are a clear nod to the original Optimal Optimus toy). DK08+ has: larger guns that can extend & retract, articulated hands, and larger, thicker forearm guards that unfold into the blast shields (which I think he only used in the show ONCE). I liked it before the upgrades, but the upgrades really sealed the deal for it in my book. Only two things would've sent it over the top: replacement ankles (because only Rodimus had decent ankles, the other two had trash ankles)...and a replacement Optimal Megatron head for that Beast Machines finale representation!! (Since they wanna pull a Takara and whip out super obscure references...)
And now that Legacy brings forth Transmetal 2 Megatron, the Beast Wars can continue anew...yesss.
I got the black version with the upgrade kit that lets him turn into the "tank?"
But I honestly binned him once i got Perfect Effect Nemesis Gorira

I was just considering on buying this figure, new of course. Just for that main big bot mode, but eh I can wait.
I recomend the reissue beast wars one. That one is alot of fun and come with alot of weapons

I messed with Optimal Optimus sometimes but I like the gorilla alt mode the best with Primal installed in his back with the guns pegged in
The thing is I have the Throne of the Primes Optimal Optimus, the one that’s black just like Optimus Primal, and he fits the ROTB Optimus Primal PERFECTLY, not this orange cartoon accurate version.
If you happen to have any super glue on hand, you can tighten the beast mode head as well as other joints which may be loose.
One of my holy grails is the Perfect Effect version

Theory: Kingdom was just an excuse to make the mold concepts for this film. We already have a SS ROTB Airazor which is a heavy retool of the Kingdom version, so I won't be surprised if all of them end up using the molds from Kingdom
Honestly… I just got the Perfect Effect Beast Gorira when they reissued him. Blows Power Of The Primal out of the water.

I thought about getting a junker version of this figure for the gorilla head. Would have been good for a custom MonsterVerse Mechani-Kong.

There’s a pin that holds the season 1 Primal to the rest of the figure. If you’re open to it, you can knock that out and have both of them standing beside one another.

Weirdly kinda wish they'd taken a note from pretenders, not even have the core Primal transform, just fold up/plug into Optimal Optimus, if this is what we got at a retail price point, coulda ditched that huge ass backpack/just made it part of beeg monke and had a slightly better, non-tramsforming deluxe-ish Primal figure

It might be my love for beast wars or the love of my original transmetal 2 optimal Optimus and the SDCC optimal Optimus but the mistransforming of parts and the placing of weapons is bugging me lol. You didn't look for instructions online did you? XD.still a fun video for the most part
While the Optimus primal part isn’t the best, I would say the vehicle mode is also not good but it’s just trying to be faithful to the original toy, the optimal mode is great and due to old leader size might pair well with legacy megatron and you can push the pin out holding the back monkey on and have them separate
There was a time when dragon megatron was announced I went looking for the POTP verification this guy but couldn’t find him for a good price in Canada and I ended up getting an almost complete (missing missiles) original Optimal Optimus. I do hope legacy gives us a new Optimal, rampage, and depth charge cause they can fit tigerhawk and dragon megatron into leader those 3 are possible

I kinda hope we get a legacy remake that looks better, like honestly if they found a way to retool this mold to have more articulation all the alt modes and scrap the evolution gimmick I think it could be a lot better.

The cockpit slots into the torso when dropping in the primal part to the monkey part. The cockpit shouldn't be loose in robot mode.
I had zero interests in this one when it came out. Then the SDCC Throne of the Prime was announced but I had no money. Years later, I saw it on Amazon.jp for 10K yen. With shipping I ended up paying over 150$CAN for that black monkey. No regrets because in all black, that toy is *GLORIOUS!*
I like this figure...... As a child I would have thought it amazing, there is a lot of play value in this figure. ...BUT the only way to get that value is by butchering little Primal from the backpack, because then you have an action figure and a big monkey thing.
...eighty dollars! hahahaha. No. Mine, brand new in box from a garden centre(!) twenty of the Earth Pounds.
I'd get this if the aftermarket + both dna design upgrade kits wouldn't cost a limb and an eye

The matrix was titan master compatible cause the core could be taken out and replace with one of the prime masters instead which inadvertently makes it titan master compatible
I really hope that they make a new version that removes the evolution gimmick and improves Optimal Optimus. This was a great figure that needed 2 upgrade kits to get close to its full potential.
DNA kit makes this figure much better.

it's... so strange to see you constantly displaying him without his cannons in beast/vehicle mode? or sticking out the front? because they were such a big part of the original Beast Wars toy. Like, that's what the 'backpack' is, the battery pack from the original toy.

It was clear that they wanted someone else (Starsaber I think) to win the vote. And they probably could've fudged the numbers. But instead they put out this half-assed plastic abomination masquerading as one of the best Beast Wars toys
We could have gotten a new Thunderwing or an affordable Star Saber, but no the fans wanted Monkey so what we got was this piece of shit!

There is a way that you can separate primal from his backpack so you can have optimal and primal separately
The special version is just better, idk why but it is. I think the paint probably does it for me. Btw you have the vehicle mode transformed wrong and you left out the Monkey jetpack mode
You have the jet mode wrong lol. It's not a bad figure just not the best. It's better to leave the small Primal attached to the back of the Big ones back in beast mode. I really think they should have left it as one figure instead of two but I understand why the did it since you saw both forms on the show. It does looks great next to the Legacy Transmetal II Megatron.
The fact this costs 150 on Amazon makes it not worth it

This optimal optimus is actually decent, at least you can remove the optimus primal backpack if that really bother you (it does bother me tho)
The original was one of my favorite toys as a kid. But this one is suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch a letdown. I bought the upgrade kit AND reprolabels and it still feels janky cause nothing tabs in properly and it's just a friggin mess. UGH.
It's sad that the toy made 20 years ago is better in every way.

Honestly the i like this leader more than the others that came out in that line. Imagine if Legacy gave us a new version, man I hope we do. Also that ROTB trailer is a let down. Hate those maximal beast mode designs and seriously is it really hard to make a compelling story where they are the correct scale?
