Does This Command The Commander Price…Get It! | #transformers Studio Series Ultra Magnus Review
I'm happy to say that young people still watch 80s and 70s classics like The Thing and Alien. If they survive the change in pacing, they usually enjoy it.
The Thing and Alien, sounds like a 70s sitcom
@@thedeadpoolwhochuckles.6852 lol
Plus it helps with catching the various references in Stranger Things. The opening credits is straight out of a John Carpenter film. Did you know that he did the music for his films?
Waiting for a video made for child collectors.
Dude WTF
@@Firebreakerhayes6904LMAO
@@Firebreakerhayes6904 I implied children that collected transformers btw

I’ve loved every Commander since Jetfire (which, I know lots have fair gripes with)
Commanders honestly fills the void that Leaders did.
Leaders now feel more like the old “Ultra” class (I can’t be the only one that remembers that size class)
Edit: to clarify, I love Jetfire, faults and all and I unfortunately never got Sky Lynx
I also love Jetfire and remember the Ultra class size. Though Jetfire almost feels like a Supreme class, the rest fit that niche very nicely.
i dont remember ultra class.. maybe you were older than me? hahaha
that being said, nowadays i think class is overrated..back then when it was commander class, its really damn commanding huge, like unicron..a leader size have a size of mpm...real scale can go, all deluxe have same size regardless.. nowadays, leader size have almost same size as voyager..
I remember Ultra class. Hell I remember generations Ultra class Powerglide and Onslaught and those guys had some electronics in them.
@Razorgeist I do too. Like G2 dreadwing
I like my Skylynx. Getting the lynx and bird parts all lined up properly to clip together is a pain and the head joint isn't strong enough to support his head with some of the bigger blast effect parts attached (unless you want him looking straight down), but other than those two minor issues he's fantastic.
I like the way he transforms like the masterpiece MP-22. Be Blessed
My only two complaints are the shoulders being a little weak and the limb removal gimmick potentially breaking the colour profile (and not in a way that I like all that much), but otherwise, phenomenal. Amazon also had a 15 dollar discount on him, which is now over... sigh.
Also, for my own morbid curiosity, I'd like to see you handle XTB's Commander Stack. It is also a phenomenal figure, but that transformation is quite long because of what it needs to do.
EDIT: apparently I was wrong - just go down to the bottom right and you'll see the option to purchase the figure for 75 dollars.
Thanks you just made it affordable for me😂
The upside down shouder missle launchers tho 😂😂😂
I just like the fact when I hold this guy I just feel like a kid again with his favourite Transformer toy being all like "haha i got a robot"
I’m very interested in seeing how 3rd party companies are going to make an Albino Prime cab for this, I’m for sure going to get my hands on a copy of Magnus cuz it actually does what an Ultra Magnus does; the Kingdom mold (which is the only version of that mold I’ve had) was so underwhelming: limited mobility, way too chunky, and a nonfunctional car hauler. It’s not a bad figure, but it was so “limited” in what it can do. This 86 Magnus, however, seems like it fixes every one of those problems.
I JUST finished doing his parts count.
46 parts in the cab, so he's actually a deluxe./s He is the lightest commander I have, but his 179 parts total brings him in line with the others. My copy had a stress mark in the firearm out of the box, and others formed due to the transformation. I'm so far pleased with him, and I hope FoC Grimlock is remade as a commander.
So, what, about 2.5x the parts count of current Generations leaders? Either Commander class is a great deal, or Leaders are way overpriced.
@@episodenull Leaders are just overpriced imo, there's very few worth getting like the bw megatron or glavatron, armada megs is debatable. I got tm 2 megs and he feels absolute shit in quality imo so I returned him. ROTB scourge also feels like a shit leader. Commanders are worth the price, titans are kind of overpriced (but I love Tidalwave too much to not get him)
What's funny is the WFC magnus has bad knees but great ankles while SS87 magnus has great knees but bad ankles
*ss86*
lol
Commander class has either size or that premium feel to them. Like, I LOVE the Rodimus, got him at Leader price on sale, but it feels soooo good! Armada Prime is amazing, just minor gripes that upgrade kits help with the transformation. I'm so looking forward to when I get my Ultra Magnus!
Agree, they could be considered Master Pieces for lower budgets.
Fun fact for those who care/don't know. In one of the many previous scripts of the 1986 movie Ultra Magnus' death was supposed to be much more gruesome. It was described that Magnus gets ripped apart by the sweeps' tractor beams.
There's still some remnants of that version of the scene in the final movie. The Sweeps fire the beams at him instead of regular laser bolts.
I got him recently, and I have to say, doing a stop motion review of this thing is gonna be an EVENT. This is the first Ultra Magnus I have ever bought where I didn't learn the transformation on my own, and THAT SPEAKS VOLUMES about it's complexity.
SS 86 Ultra Magnus is still 75 dollars on Amazon right now
Now it's 100 something, inflation sucks
bro was the same price of tfp bumblebee 💀
Super painful that I missed out on this guy. He’s quality
He's back in stock now!
(on amazon)
@@TheKnightEngineer he’s $200 on Amazon where I am.
5:07 I found that you don't really need to let it flow into the pin (skill issue for me), you just need to pop his arm off of the port and brush the floor polish onto the hinge underneath the square port
I'm so happy they chose to make everything integrated. He never appeared as a white Prime in the G1 cartoon so it wouldn't have made sense to do that in an 86 toy.
Thank god im not the only one who noticed the white plastic in truck mode. I seriously thought he was yelllowing back and forth
The spring loaded chest is cool for a play feature, but as a Stop-Motion ANIMATOR! Where you take individual pictures to make a fluid movement! Just let that settle in.
Yeah, that's true. A good tip would be to prop something over the hinges so the spring loaded gimmick doesn't mess up the shot and edit them out. Though, there's probably an easier way to do it.
thank you for addressing my concerns!
He’s better than the MP version. In my humble opinion. I think Armada Prime beats him a bit imho…but he’s so damn great. They’re real close. My only issue is .. with mine my arms are floppy. He can’t hold his arms in the air and out to the side like you did to yours in the video.
I assume I can fix it.
The “wide” factor doesn’t bother me at all
Wide isn't my biggest issue. It's his height. I understand it's a Commander Class figure so it should be a certain size, but in my head, Magnus shouldn't be bigger than Grimlock. I'm happy (for now) with my customized Siege Magnus.
The problem is apparently from the Sunbow G1 chart, Grimlock and Magnus are about the same height as one another.
@@osakatales9228 there is no scale in TF. There are scenes where Grimlock is tiny. They can grow and shrink at will just like Megatron when he turns into a pistol. As a kid I put it down to 'space magick'. Somehow the unneeded mass is sent to another dimension. In qauntum mechanics things can be in two places at once. This is not science fiction. Qauntum computers exist today. For G1 the cybertronian race must have a built in supernatural power to tap into other dimensions than the usual 3 Dimensions which are visible. Thus you have guys like Astrotrain able to change size and fit so many "big" robots into his body. Human technology is not millions of years old so these Cybertronian have way more advanced stuff than us. It looks like magick to us and to the Transformers it probably IS. (since there is never an explanation in the cartoon why they don't know about changing sizes - it's just a reality to them their whole life that these dimensions exist and they can tap into the dimension to cause them to summon weapons out of nothing and hide them in the invisible dimension when needed. It's not the same as nanotechnology, it's literally putting things away into hidden dimension so it's not physically in the material realm)
In my head canon they turn smaller to conserve energy and make themselves move quickly and more efficiently and also to avoid being hit so easily (larger target means less chance to avoid being shot). And they choose large size for increase in power but it's heavy on energon usage so they can't fight for as long before losing steam and tiring out. (stamina drain) The healthy medium is to stay at a "native size" that is a healthy balance of power and efficiency. Sort of like a wizard who has limited "magic points": he can choose to do one really expensive spell and get tired after doing it, or many smaller spells. Or a guy at the gym who can choose to do just one rep of a heavy weight or many lighter reps of light weights.

Studio series commander class ultra magnus: Naw, ima do my own thing
The smaller of those "guns" is actually the welding tool, which in the movie he grabs after they crash land on the planet of junk.
Studio Series 86 Magnus is factually better than the Kingdom one
It's not even an argument either
Opinions.
@@thedeadpoolwhochuckles.6852 opinions don't matter when it's marginally better. Sure, you can like one over the other, but that doesn't mean it's better because you like it more
A mini masterpiece that cost only $90? I like that
The only complaint I had when this was announced was that we lost a chance of having a different character at the commander price, like sixshot, which could be a great choice considering the engineering needed for him.
Honestly he sounds like he should be in legacy
Sixshot’s alt modes are very uncomplicated transformations I honestly think he could just be a leader
Titans Return Sixshot was perfect... now Quickswitch...
It's just that Six Shot wasn't in the 86 movie. I know they've made some big stretches for inclusions in the line, but Six Shot was barely included (If at all. Can't remember.) in the American release of G1.
@@arcticdragon5823 Sixshot doesn’t appear in the movie yeah, his toy wouldn’t even come out until the year after
10:47 failboat fans: “allow us to introduce ourselves”
My dumb ass read that was fall out fans
Finding this wave of SS is a pain my local store takes months to stock them and legacy evos final wave only just stocked for me which sucks but I did find night bird and she’s cool
super hyped for the 86 optimus as this was my favourite thing i picked up last year
If you really want an “accurate” Magnus core bot I guess you could get the R.E.D. and use SS86 Magnus’ cab as his alt mode.
That's actually not a bad idea. Great.....now I wanna do that
@@ThatToyGuy I’m doing it. That’s why I commented it.
1:25: It works well at the Commander pricepoint because it's essentially a Leader Class without all of the shrinkflation cost cutting. It's the Leader Magnus they would like to make, but can't make at a Leader pricepoint anymore. IMHO anyway. Also, great review as always! I never miss your reviews...eventually.
This is the Ultra Magnus I wanted when I settled for the Kingdom one!
I got this guy preordered for December on Amazon CA. Can't say he's cheap, but for a definitive G1 86 Ultra Magnus I don't see him being replaced anytime soon. Really like the Legacy Armada Prime, so great to see the same standard of quality with Ultra Magnus. While I don't hate the Siege iteration other than the trailer being an absolute pain to tab together) I'm okay with this being post apocalyptic Cybertronian Magnus while this subjectively is the OG Ultra Magnus I've always wanted in my collection since the G1 toy came out. Though I personally couldn't care less about the exploding limbs feature seeing this entire truck transform without any actual parts forming other than the missile placements is engineering brilliance.
4:09 sounded sore
How big is he compared to SS Scourge and the Fallen???
He looks like a solid figure and might be my first commander
4:10 I felt that knee crack.. hope ur okay brother! Bad knee sympathetic squad
My copy has the exact same issue with the ankle pivot in alt mode. Besides that, Freakin awesome figure! Absolute unit. Takes up a lot of shelf space though. Need to rearrange a bit to fit him somewheres.
I pre-ordered this as soon as it went up, it arrived yesterday and if I didn't have to work today then I probably wouldn't have been able to put it down till about noon ish, but I think it was well worth both the price and wait
2:54 - 3:04 you know the figure is solid, when they’re still standing with their leg detached.
i think this is the most aswome gimic toy. i hope to get this in the future but for now im getting nova prime,
Only if the Combiner ports were reversed you could have swapped out the limbs for combiner limbs instead that would have been funny
I wonder how the commander Optimus will scale with this because Magnus is also a commander, and you get a Matrix w/ both
don’t forget truck mode too
Just reviewed this absolute chunker, and I have got to say, it is one hell of a figure. This is the first Ultra Magnus where I wasn't able to transform him right out of the box without directions. It takes the MP figure and basically curb stomps it with a better transformation, better feeling joints, and almost 1/3rd of the price.
I actually like him being wider, it gives him a feeling of being buff and also makes him more different from others.
How on Earth is being wide a complaint? Wide is good!
Who else has in their head canon that UM survived being blown up by the Sweeps because it was the armor that blew up and the core robot used the explosion as cover to hide? And then didn't tell anyone because it's useful to keep the fact that the real guy is inside the armor a secret? Anybody?
I'm very very much enjoying Ultra Magnus! He is slightly smaller than Armada Prime but completely worth it IMO, Transformation being more complex but very fun at the same time, I like that. He's just a solid feeling well made Transformer. His only drawbacks are his shoulder joints being loose stock and it would be nice if he had better ankle movements but it's not bad at all. And yeah, I do get the plastic color differences but still decent. Now is he better than Prime? No, not by much but a good enough amount.
I cannot WAIT to pick up one of these. The transformation on it is beautifully done! I love how it recalls the G1 toy so much but looks accurate to the movie, especially with the huge eyes Hasbro gave him. (I could almost hear Robert Stacks voice come out of it when I first saw it in the video!) A MAJOR improvement over the WFC release.
Just too bad he’s not actually $90 anywhere.
Love your videos!!! I got both of them and my 2 sons live playing with them! I purchase them to tell my wife it’s for them but I get the most fun transforming them for my boys! I live my childhood over through them!
“The Thing” is awesome 👍
Here in Australia this figure is retailing for $175.00.
You can get it at JB for 155
@@mikeclarke3990 not at my local.
Considering it is the same size as the Leader class figures from previous lines and smaller then previous commander class figures. It is very much over priced. But I still brought it because it is bloody awesome.
Commanders have just been leaders with blast effects for a minute now and Motormaster was not even that.
Kind of reminds me of the Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus where the cab does not turn into a separate robot, the cab is always with the armor. But the cab on this one can be removed. I personally don't like poseable fingers though. Unless it is like Legacy Jhiaxus, where there is a 5mm in the hand uninhibited by the poseable fingers.
The cab in the Combiner Wars Ultra Magnus also can be removed, using a screwdiver, it doesn't mess the transformation into robot mode.
I got him today and when I looked in the instructions that you could take him apart I died. I don't like his ears being seperate, they were very fiddly and kept falling off if I wasn't careful. He fits in very well with mine so far which are all G1.
Does having to remove weapons from the figure and reattach them in vehicle mode really count as partsforming?
I personally wouldn't count it but there are quite a few who do
Mine came in today and I absolutely LOVE HIM
not to mention he's my favorite G1 Design
Poor magnus. First Ron Freidman gives him lines in the film he hasn't been able to live down since, then he gets blown to pieces! Glad to see him getting some love with this figure.
I missed my chance to buy this. Need a reissue pronto.
I love the Commander Rodimus.
It wasn’t then or is now worth $90.
Holy Jaysus that transformation looks mad, but really fun.
I only just got Armada Prime and I can tell from looking at this that these two figures do different things. Armada Prime is a chunky voyager with a chunky trailer. They have relatively simple conversions individually, but come together to be greater than the sum of their parts as it were, along with plenty of Siege-esque greebling. Whereas this guy seems to go bonkers on the transformation engineering, but that's coming from someone who hasn't played with a Magnus before. Obviously he's got the chunk factor as well! Just less so than Armada Prime.
SS86 releases seem to be random over here, so I don't know when or if we'll get Magnus.
Do I want him? I'll have to wait and see, but I'd be lying if I said that transformation wasn't selling me on it by itself!
I personally really don't like the look of Armada Prime at all, but I seem to be in the minority on that as I have seen lots of praise for that figure.
Maybe it's because I never watched that particular show.
Totally loving SS86 Ultra Magnus though. 100% worth getting in my opinion. Solid figure, really great.
The hollow pinned shoulder joints should not have happened though. I can't fathom how anyone in the design process looked at that and said "I did a good job!". The limb gimmick wasn't needed because "this thing that happened briefly in the cartoon" isn't always worth an accessory or a gimmick. Actually I can't wait for "cartoon accuracy" to go away & toy accuracy to become the focus of the line, because the cartoon was badly-drawn more often than not.
I do still think I prefer the MP slightly. It's just more cohesive looking in robot mode while being almost the same toy. Articulation is compromised in similar ways on both unless you're OK breaking the sculpt.
The two real advantages this has over the MP IMO are the buttflap being gone, and the inner shins flipping out to form the rest of the lower deck -- something I always looked at MP magnus with bafflement as to why they didn't do.
Not just I have seen The Thing, but even more so, I have my own argument about the events of that movie telling the story of the first Quintesson prototype for an organic augmentation component for cybertronians (the reverse of transhumanism) that was long lost and went rouge when discovered during the events of the horror movie.
That "thing" had incorporated self preservation and predatory instincs, being able to appropriate other biological matter to repair itself or expand/multiply.
Being an isolated initial prototype it could not follow the different evolution iterations that the biotech on it followed until being adopted by cybertronians, predatory instincts and all, to go into their Maximal-Predacon era. (Part of the reason why for example Primal is way beyond Prime's noble behavoir).
My view of real life Beast Transformers is one in which everytime they they transform, the meat, muscle and skin of their beast mode rips appart blodily, hence their loud scream when they shout maximize/terrorize, so this biological component needs to withstand such extreme damage, being able to heal super fast and being able to stick back to itself when healed ripped appart sections join back together to produce a coherent single piece "animal".
3:15 CatDog right there
I know it's probably just the case of there being certain transformation steps that are just standard for G1 Magnus, but it almost seems like this figure takes ques from the Combiner Wars figure and just drastically expands on it
At around the 11:00 mark, you have this small truck, I presume it is another Ultra Magnus. Which series/version is that? Am not familiar that there is a core series Magnus of that type. Am guessing RID based off design?
That's definitely a Transformer...🤘🏼💯✔️
I also did a review on Magnus. Both of his armpit joints were flabby. After apply rejuvenate floor polish for several days, it can barely hold a t pose. Its never going to be displayed in any dynamic poses.
I am watching this (even though I own this Magnus) and all I can think is, "Did I accidently throw out the Nova Prime sword?"
The thing (1982) is my all time favorite movie!!!
Siege/Earthrise Ultra Magnus got it best with the White Prime and armor
I am hoping just like Combiner Wars that a Third party could create a transformable cab for Magnus honestly
Because the armor looks amazing, but I would have preferred if they still could get the White Prime alongside the engineering of the toy
I still got Siege Magnus, and the difference sure are noticable now that I am watching this video
This is on my Christmas list, and after seeing a very positive review for it I look forward to hopefully getting it!
Typically my play experience with WFC/legacy toys is to keep it on my desk to fiddle with it for the rest of the day until I put it with the rest on my shelf.
SS86 magnus hasn’t left my desk.
got mine today and it did not disappoint this was my most anticipated transformer of 2023
for the knee I found you have to click it in mine had the same problem until I put a little more pressure into it and it just pops into place
I really want a delta magnus.Armor trailer for the earthize prime... Especially now that i'm gonna get the ss eighty six prime
Ik this really late but thanks for this at 10:30 i thought my ss86 magus was yellowing somehow already
i love this guy and my only concern is the clear plastic on the neck, it already cracked on mine
I wish Hasbro would pick a limb swap attachment and just stick with it. Imagine if you could slap Menasor's legs onto this guy instead of.... slapping Menasor onto this guy.
It's $170 here in Australia so it's a bit much, it looks real slick though.
I collected this SS ultra Magnus figure and trust me it was so cool
I think I would've preferred a leader size Magnus myself, but they would've used the Siege mold if they went that route so it's fine. Besides, this figure's dope.
On another note, anybody else kinda getting sick of leader classes being voyagers with extra accessories half the time? Legacy Blitzwing with an extra sword and the hands, Siege Shockwave with the armor stuff, Siege Astrotrain with his tender and guns, and of course Prime (and his recolors) with trailers, though I can usually forgive that last one. Gimme more SS86 Dinobots, Legacy BW TM2 Megatron and Legacy Skyquake/Dreadwing, less little dudes with a bunch of parts nobody really wants.
Just ordered him for $75 on Amazon. Ships... November 9 - December 14. I can wait, especially for that price.
Kinda didn’t like hearing him scrape across your table when you were transforming him. Sent tingles down my spine
I wonder if the detach cab option could also open up the possibility of a powermaster prime in the future...
i like mine except for the ears popping themselves out at random on my shelf and the cab falls off during transformation.
People just like to complain before they even get to experience something first hand. It’s why I take opinion or reveal videos with a grain of salt. And even when I watch in hand reviews I mostly just watch to see the toy in hand, and mostly ignore what the person in the video has to say. If I see the features I like present in the figure, that’s a buy for me
This figure looks great can’t wait to get it
I been noticing Legacy Powerlinx Hot Shot in GameStop Canada. Will you be getting / reviewing it?
Where’d you get that Yellow Starsaber for Nova Prime
I found it kinda funny how you struggled to get the cab off the hitch because you moved it to the center, but if you left the cab pulled all the way forward it just slips off the hitch pin super easily....barely an inconvenience DAMMIT! I tried not to but I said the thing anyway. XP
Lol yeah I was told it just comes off by my buddies but mine just doesn't. I think there's excess plastic in the hitch on mine cause I have to center it to take it out
@@ThatToyGuy That's strange. Could be some flashing left over then or maybe when they put the center pin in they hit the plastic and made it stick out far enough to make it not come off.
I wish they had forgone the dismemberment gimmick and put the budget towards better engineering on the shoulders.
This guy looks fantastic. While I don't regret getting Armada Prime over Magnus here, I can tell this is a quality figure. The only thing I wish is that they managed to somehow do the inner robot gimmick like they did with the Seige one, but I can see why they didn't do that and they absolutely made the right choices here.
Ultra Magnus didn't have that feature in the Movie, nor in the cartoon, not even in the anime sequel so it makes sense that they didn't include it in the figure.
@Hektols oh yeah, I get why he doesn't have it and it was the right call. I just like the "inner robot" gimmick
Saw this guy at my local toy store today, it worth almost half monthly minimun wage in my country
I wonder if there gonna do a generations selects delta magnus
I really want this but I need to get armada prime before I get any other commander. The fig looks awesome and it’s crazy that he, as of yesterday, was on discount on Amazon
Literally my only complaint I have for this guy is that mine has the loose shoulders, which I fixed, and that the head and neck feel a little too loose, which I don't mind. So basically I have zero complaints, because this guy is awesome
great review! has hasbro solved the yellowing issue? i wanna get magnus but i dont want my 80 dollars to turn yellow
Vincoroor v33-06 guys im ready when your ready. KO oversize with light and diecast for around the same price please.
