Your story about the lady wanting to look younger and the mom who did not think the painting looked like her daughter hit home! I was a young girl and found a love for oil painting. I was engaged to my now husband at the time. I fell in love with one of the photos he sent me while in the service so, I painted it. My husband had saw it before it was done and liked it so far but, I finished it and showed it to my mother...that was not a good idea. My mother looked at the painting and said he looked old. I was so afraid for him to see it and tore it up. I haven't painted a portrait since.
As I got older I realized my mother was seeing the portrait through "older" eyes. When she saw my husband back then she saw a young boy. I as a younger person was seeing him as more mature than my mother could at that time. I have not painted a portrait since that day and I have never felt the joy of painting when painting a scenery. However, watching you paint has lit my heart on fire to paint again. You are the first person I have ever watched actually paint a portrait. Now I know I was on the right track with my portraits but, I was missing a couple of techniques. Thank you and God Bless you!!!

I really love to watch you paint, Renso. It's really relaxing and mesmerizing. And I really love your culture of living with and taking care of older family members. That's what we do too. I find it very cruel to put elderly to nursing home, and they often end up dying alone...

I copied black and white photos years ago until I was as good as the camera, but I was only copying the tones. Do you do the same with color photos? Are you just copying the tones, or can you draw? After a few years I realized that I could not draw so I learned. Never got into color that much. I figured just use a camera if you need a color photo.

Well done, Renso. I have to say that I prefer this one of " Brad pitt" much better than the one you did about Angelina Jolie! If you had put a little touch of more light in the hair above the forehead , and on the attachment to his ears , would have looked even more natural. And shone more! But, overall , nice one! I just discovered you!!!! your classes are amazing!!!!!! I just did my first portrait painting along with you!! how do you use so little color and keep it so neat? (are you using oil or turpentine while you are painting) I always mix up initial colors, but then quickly run out and they all end up a big mess, and then i just grab anything...i have NEVER been able to figure out how to keep my colors mixed and neat....What is the secret?
Hi, i do not use medium just raw paint, when you have problems mixing it is because you do not control values yet, you need to separate colors and values, light and shadow

I use linseed oil and turpentine to wipe out my brushes, then i use baby oil to clean wipe them out after then
