@Gabriel Cintron what mental illness was it? Like it's pretty straight forward why they don't let some people join based on their mental health condition it's because they don't want nutjobs and liabilities
Honestly basic training IS simple. Just follow 3 easy rules: 1-Shut the f*ck up. 2-Do what you're told. 3-When you figure out what needs to be done, do it without being told. That's it. That'll get you through. Hell, if you do rule 3 well enough, you'll excel.

Right but do you know how much time and effort it takes for a soldier’s leadership to shepherd them through the chaptering process? It is an EVERY day exercise of administrative hoops to jump through. Hoops that prevent commanders from actually training their troops.

Story time: I was a Navy Basic "Confidence Chamber" instructor. (I love that i remember her name) SR Moon refused to train because it was "hazing". I didn't have time to deal with her because I had 180ish real sailors to train. Apparently, that night her drill instructors "motivated" Moon to participate. The next day she straggled into my class. After the lecture, mask fitting, and medical brief i noticed another recruit on crutches (Hate that i can't remember her name) practically balling. I asked her what the deal was. She said "Doc said i can't participate because I'm Limdu. I've done every other training with my division." Meanwhile, I could actually see Moon realizing what it meant to be a part of something bigger and how much of a turd she was. I talked Doc into allowing Limdu to get teargassed with other recruits holding the doors for her. She fucking owned it! Three weeks later Moons RDC(Drill sergeant) told me she never passed final PT and didn't graduate. Desmond Doss won a Medal of Honor as a conscientious objector. He was put through hell in basic and was still more badass than most soldiers I knew in the Army. Not relieved, no, not even a little. I feel like I failed. That I'm a terrible excuse for a soldier, and I let down everybody who supported me when I decided to join. I let down the Drill Sergeants who pushed me into being better than I thought I could be, and the instructors at AIT who taught me how to be a medic. Every day I wish I could go back, do it over, go active, and properly sort out my bullshit, while she's just telling people to pretend they have the same issues like it's no big deal, to just fake mental illnesses because they want to quit. As someone who was legitimately discharged on mental health and got screwed over by the Army for it and now have to fight for my benefits, this woman pisses me the hell off.
Do you mind sharing? Like the illness? Just curious how bad it is to get out. I’ve never been in the army, but I don’t think I can be, as I have some pre existing medical conditions… but I’m curious.
I was just told that I couldn't even join the military because of mental defects...can't imagine getting dishonorably discharged and having to prove I'm not mentally defective.
Don't know if this helps/is relevant: The early onset of Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, and Schizophrenia behaves like Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline does not get you a medical discharge...and if you're released when the Bipolar or Schizophrenia is in its "infancy" the military docs will think they released someone with Borderline. This often isn't done to intentionally screw the veteran, but rather its a matter of timing. If you are not diagnosed with Borderline in your youth, but are in the military, but then are diagnosed with Bipolar or Schizophrenia as a veteran after your release it may be possible to get a service connected rating because: Borderline develops in childhood, usually teenage years. If there is no documentation of a childhood diagnosis, then it can't be proven as such. Bipolar/Schizophrenia doesn't usually manifest until someone is in their early twenties; so if you aren't diagnosed with Borderline until early twenties AND THEN diagnosed with Bipolar or Schizophrenia afterwards, the military discharged the individual before the mental disorder "matured." I was mostly a decent Airman, had a mental breakdown. No prior history of mental illness or delinquency, was model student, in leadership, up for early promotion, etc. Discharged due to "Personality Disorder. " Years later, as a civilian, after years of eval, was diagnosed with Bipolar 2. So due to no childhood Borderline diagnosis, sudden emergence of "Borderline Personality" and then eventual diagnosis of BP2, I was given service connected retroactively due to how mental disorders develop over the course of time. Few people wake up crazy...it is a slow process. Keep at it. It took me a year or two of active pushing to get my rating but I did.
So, for those asking or wanting clarification, I was honorably discharged with Severe anxiety and depression, Dillusional disorder, and a couple moderate physical injuries. While I was in, the Army agreed that my mental health state was due to service, but when I got out, they had deemed it prior existing despite medical records showing otherwise. Currently waiting on the case to reach the courts, sadly there is a massive backlog given how rampant this issue is.
"I want to fake mental health issues because the VA doesn't have any legitimate cases they have to worry about..." What a fucking see you next Tuesday.

I don't understand what is the big issue with getting out of the military in the US, granted I've never served in my country but from what my buddies who are in told me, you just have to ask and they will be very happy to let you go since thats more money saved for the government.
@liam Anderson From what I know you can only do so in basic training before you get any sort of meaningfull training, if you get some sort of specialist course than you can't leave before a certain amount of time. I know that if you are an officer you are bound to serve at least 7 years I think.
I like how she's talking about how her being taller than the drill sergeants mean she's not scared of them. I just want to tell anyone here who is thinking of joining the military. The drill instructors themselves may be scary, but the thing you gotta think about before you ever get froggy with them is this: even if the drill instructor is and you can somehow beat them in a fight, the other recruits aren't going to just stand around and let you do whatever.
@@RobRamirez456 In my day (‘84), Drills had to ask permission to touch a soldier (adjust or correct their position) to comply with a task. I saw a trainee (6ft maybe), refuse to obey an order then try to dress down a Drill Sgt. (about 5 foot 4). The Drill responded with a righteous dressing that attracted the attention of the Battalion Commander (we were in line in the chow hall). The trainee felt he had the right and enough balls to take him on and did. One swing and then he was on the floor with his head split open (plus broken ribs). We didn’t have time to react, it was over in less than 3 seconds! Several months later I heard that he received assault charges, confinement, and a bad conduct discharge.
The amount of people she "knows" and the amount of them she PERSONALLY witnessed talking to the Drill sergeant... I'm fairly confident in saying she is a compulsive liar.
I failed every pt test right up until the last one in basic. My drills spent the entire time telling me that I had it in me to pass. Even on the last test they told me that if I didn't pass then the next cycle would get me to pass. Couldn't have asked for better motivation.
I was the same way when I was in Basic Training, bro. My Drills saw that I was tryna push myself through everything, especially when I lost my stepdad, and they made sure that I passed the last one. I don't know about today's army, but back in the 80's, it was relatively easy to discharge a basic trainee. It was called the Trainee Discharge Program (TDP). It was used for those who were unable to adapt to the military environment. Usually a complete and total fuckup. I used it frequently. On occasion, during exodus cycle (when you have the Christmas cycle and they get a week or two off). I had 3 female soldiers (different cycles) who actually got pregnant while home and about 3 weeks later, they are sick and sent to the clinic and the pregnancy test is positive. There was nothing we could do for them, they were discharged. It's under honorable circumstances. We had some that just couldn't adapt to the rigors of the Army and especially basic training. Only had 1 trainee who stood a courts martial and was discharged with a dishonorable discharge. Most of what the person in the video said was wrong, or at best misleading. Drill Sergeants are pretty good judges of character and we know when a soldier is bull shitting, and at least during my trail time we had ways of making sure they regretted every trying some of those excuses.

As a Guardsman in college who actually has depression, and who has a handful of friends with family histories of mental illnesses including schizophrenia, I can't help but feel pissed at the "mental health excuse" she brought up right out of the gate. I've been like this for almost half my life and have only recently begun to seek actual help and treatment, partially because I'm anxious about therapy, but mostly because the perception of depression where I live is hopelessly outdated and I didn't want to have that metaphorical coin flip between being told "you're not depressed you're just a whiny little bitch" or "oh shit you're depressed here are a bunch of meds that we need you to take so you don't get megasad and Kermit sewer slide". It was only when things got to the point that I was hardly leaving my room, let alone my apartment, for days or even a straight week that I was finally urged to go to health services and see what's wrong with me. No matter the level of mental illness, from "simple" stuff like depression, anxiety, ADHD, etc. to the "bigger" stuff like schizophrenia, DID, PTSD, etc. all mental illness is serious and can range from a nuisance to crippling - even just for that one individual; it's not always at its worst, but your mental health can just plummet out of nowhere and suddenly you go from a mediocre day to top ten worst days of your life in about two seconds flat. All of this is just me trying to say that even beyond the suggestion of faking mental illness to get kicked out of the military, promoting ANY kind of ideas that involve discrediting mental illnesses that actual people have to live with on a daily basis is beyond disrespectful, it's downright harmful and makes people with poor mental health feel like they won't be taken seriously if they try to seek help. This grade-A cunt is effectively invalidating people with mental health problems (along with all of the other things she thinks can just be treated as excuses) and only continuing to make it harder for people who actually suffer from these conditions to speak up or reach out without the fear of being told they're just faking it.
Is this common in the army? When I was in boot camp, a dude broke the shit out of his foot and refused to tell anyone because he was afraid they would kick him out.
Yeah, we had a guy who just couldn't do the run under time. Recycled 3 times. Nice guy. Everyone loved him. He was kind of our version of Pyle. We all pushed the shit out of him and he was able to do the run and graduate proudly. Some people are just dirt bags and some find a way to overcome.
Around 1982 I was into the 2nd year of my enlistment. There were no computers back then, and if you wanted to find something out about the military you went to the base library and searched the military manuals for what you wanted. I was surprised when a buddy showed up back at the barracks with a manual entitled "Early Outs" or something similar to that. It was a manual on all the different ways people could be seperated from the service before their ETS date (good ways). He found it tucked away in a dark corner far out of it sequence spot as he was searching for another manual. I never did get to read it before he returned it. The Army actually has a frigging manual to help people get out early and do it the right way !
As someone who was stuck in BCT for 7 months, the amount of people I seen who just wanted to quit was phenomenal. I know people who wanted to stay so badly but the Army kicked them out. You know this actually brought up an interesting thought I had. I was always a quitter in the civilian world. If I didn't get instant gratification, I would just move on to the next thing. Hell the longest I ever even held a job was a year. Within the second day of basic I wanted to quit. But another guy in my platoon tried to quit before I tried. Two drill sergeants gave him a talk about quitting, and I just said "Nah fuck that, I won't be like that guy." I didn't quit. I just refused. Even when I was throwing up in the mud I wouldn't lay in it, I got back up and kept pushing. The very same drill sergeant who encouraged me to quit is the one who pinned me with my first stripe at the end of basic, and he told me that I got that stripe because I never quit even once. This is the mentality I have and that I will keep holding in my goddamn heart for the rest of my life. No more quitting. Just keep pushing forward. You can lay down when you die.
This is borderline word for word what happened to me. Best job I had before the military was at a gas station. I never strived for anything. Got in, forgot the word “quit” and after 6 months of training that THEY paid ME for, I got the credentials for a job paying almost 6 figures a year. Now that my NG contract is ending I’m going active in another MOS. I love being a soldier. I’m happy you made it through man. Hope you’re doing well.

About seven or eight months after finishing AIT I was back at Jackson doing Combat Lifer Saver, or some other short course, can't quite remember... But I saw that jackass on a mower cutting grass. This is just over 2 YEARS since getting off the bus at reception! I'm an E4 by then, he's still as E1, and all day, day in day out, doing stupid shit like mowing, cleaning etc... Just permanent E1 bitch duty. I talked to him for a few minutes, and he assured me he was getting out any day now. Of course that's what they'd been telling him for more than a year and a half. He's probably still white washing rocks, a 48 year old PV1, going home any day now. Jesus... just train, graduate, and get on with your life.
He might just be chilling there due to the stuff he has to do is simple. Got a place to sleep and eat. After a bit of thinking it could be until he decides to do the training and graduate. Then he'll leave. Its a bit funny though, first time I hear about this happening in the army.

As someone who was legitimately discharged on mental health and got screwed over by the Army for it and now have to fight for my benefits, this woman pisses me the hell off.
So true. Me too.
Don't know if this helps/is relevant:
The early onset of Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, and Schizophrenia behaves like Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline does not get you a medical discharge...and if you're released when the Bipolar or Schizophrenia is in its "infancy" the military docs will think they released someone with Borderline. This often isn't done to intentionally screw the veteran, but rather its a matter of timing.
If you are not diagnosed with Borderline in your youth, but are in the military, but then are diagnosed with Bipolar or Schizophrenia as a veteran after your release it may be possible to get a service connected rating because:
Borderline develops in childhood, usually teenage years. If there is no documentation of a childhood diagnosis, then it can't be proven as such.
Bipolar/Schizophrenia doesn't usually manifest until someone is in their early twenties; so if you aren't diagnosed with Borderline until early twenties AND THEN diagnosed with Bipolar or Schizophrenia afterwards, the military discharged the individual before the mental disorder "matured."
I was mostly a decent Airman, had a mental breakdown.

You can lay down when you die.

as a person with a diagnosed mental disorder that requires daily meds, and someone who genuinely wants to serve my country in the military, but cant because of it... what she is saying is disgusting.
I'm right there with you. I got turned down by three branches of service in the early and mid 2000s because of similar circumstances.
I'm with you on that one. The primary reason I couldn't sign up was a back injury, however I also struggle with depression and PTSD. Thankfully I found an extraordinary surgeon who was able to fix my back. But I still require 5 medications to keep my mind in check. My sense of self-worth and any notion of confidence has been utterly destroyed. I wouldn't wish these issues on anyone. Anyone who feigns mental illness deserves a few swift kicks to the face.
@@JustIn-op6oy nah they deserve they ass beat if they gonna do that, people in my family have some mental illnesses and physical illnesses so if people started faking it I'd go ballistic
I'm with you as well using a mental health problem as an excuse to getting out of the military just feels nasty I'm in the service and I don't play around with that shit stunt of pretending. Going through a depression right now since the pandemic hit and a loss of my grandma last year and next month is her anniversary of her death and its hard to think positive on something without seeking help.
We had a guy who wanted to quit in Osut and he got out of that mind set because our drill sgt told him he would be here longer as a quitter then it would take him to become a soldier.
