  • In this tutorial you will learn how to create a photorealistic Diamond Shader for V-Ray to use for example in product rendering, advertisment and so on. We will discover the basics such as what kind of geometry is required and what issues you would need to fix. I will then show you my preferred way how to create an easy to control render setup for a Diamond Shader and explain each step. We will discover the basics of refractive materials, how to choose the correct Index of Reraction (IOR), what is Dispersion and how to keep the rendertime in check.
    I am using 3ds Max and V-Ray 5 in this demo but you can also use the same techniques for older versions such as V-Ray NEXT and V-Ray 3.

    Thank you for this tutorial, was extremely helpful! I had no idea about the dome light issues O.O

      I have to check back on the issue, it might be fixed in current updates.

      Will think about it, but i think the only thing that would change is the refraction/fog color or?

    Another good one. Regarding the material swatches, you could disable auto-update and keep the new look, couldn't you?

    • @JonasNoell
      @JonasNoell  4 года назад +2

      You can but it has other disadvantages, for example if you switch between different swatches it still takes a huge amount of time even with autoupdate disabled. Also if you open your scene freshly it will still force to recalculate all the swatches and you might end up waiting some minutes if you have a bunch of diamond shaders with dispersion in your material view.
      I think the easiest way would be to not calculate the dispersion for the swatches because you anyway can't see any difference, but Chaosgroup insists that the shaders in the swatches have to be 100% identical with the actual shader. Apparently people are doing their shading only based on the swatches...
      I found using the classic swatches by far the easiest, because anyway I don't care so much how they look like but prioritize a fast workflow :)

    Is there a video where you did the same thing in Maya?
    If not, can the same principles be applied in maya for a similar look of a Diamond?

      Unfortunately no video about this. But if you use V-Ray for Maya I think you can 1:1 transfer the same workflow to Maya.
