  • I have to confess something: I am so addicted to quantities. I experience tremendous freedom around sugar and flour, which I'm very grateful for, but I'm struggling with my quantities right now. Watch this week's Vlog to hear what has happened to me over the last few weeks.

Perfectionism of weighing and measuring is an addiction too.

Though I started BLE on 11/06/2017, it wasn’t until a week and a half ago on Sunday, 5/22/2022 that I wrote in my journal the following: “ Ugh! Addiction. What else would I call continuing a destructive habit that I don’t want to engage in?” I resisted for the past 4 1/2 years calling this what it is. I didn’t want the label. That wasn’t me. But over these past 4 1/2 years I have lost over 70 pounds, fell off and climbed back on the wagon repeatedly, and ultimately put back on just over half the weight I had lost. I had to have a Come-to-Jesus meeting with myself, literally and figuratively. I am now on Day 10 and remaining BRIGHT. This journey really is like peeling the proverbial onion. Layer upon layer has been built up over decades of neglecting the care of my earthly vessel. And now, layer by layer I am discovering what’s been hiding beneath my self-imposed prison of flesh. I too am thankful for honesty and for revelations about what I wasn’t ready to see before. 💖 Thank you, Susan.

Thanks for doing this! It has to be so hard to lead this movement, in terms of pressure to stay bright and accumulated years worth of bright days in a row. It’s actually nice to know that you still have a sine wave that you’re still tightening and continue to have a journey with it-it provides hope to those whose sine wave is more roller-coaster-like. I am a bright lifer-very busy life and not too active in the community, BUT I continue to religiously listen to the weekly vlog because you always dig deep and give us an absolutely huge nugget. Today’s hit me like a mack truck: “My food habit is my baseline habit. If I’m not honest with myself and my food, that trickles out into other areas of my life.” I found this to be true myself-I considered myself an honest person, but when you really sit yourself down and decide whether your day was bright or not, it’s amazing what the brain will do.

Learning from our leader that the quantities struggle requires preciseness and continual vigilance and assessment. I liked hearing on a call from another bright lifer that they prefer to identify as a “portions person” instead of a “quantities person” - a more positive identity. Susan continues to peel her layers for our community and is an example of vulnerability and honesty. We discussed in our MMG that it is tricky addiction that requires constant vigilance. Way to go Susan for up levelling your program, so the rest of us can learn 8from you. I relate to “eating off others plates.”

Leading two teams and I think that if someone goes off on Sugar or Flour then I think they should step down, but if it is just quantities and not a true binge then I think just draw a line and do better next time. If someone has a problem with it then using a scale at all meals is a really good practice. I call ahead or have a serious discussion with the server. I really love that you are so open and honest with us. This is why you are such a great leader, you have walked the walk. Thank you for being there for us all. Sending you so much love.

Perfect timing for me! I listened to this vlog right before going out for my birthday dinner. I took 1/2 of my meal home because it looked like 2 meals of the chicken. I love how my identity has changed. I was encouraged to have a birthday drink and just a little of dessert. I had no desire to make exceptions, because my identity is that I am a Bright Line eater.

What a POWERFUL vlog!!! Whenever my GG’s teammates or fellow BL’ers berate themselves for “transgressions” or breaking their lines AND wondering if they’ll ever get it right, I remind them of the following: if SPT can struggle, so can we ❤️. We are imperfectly human and that’s what’s so amazing about this BLE journey! Our shared experience allows us to mirror each other and recognize ourselves… the mistakes, missteps, hiccups, ditch-diving, fumbles and stumbles. We all do it. It’s ok.
PS: I’m also a volume-lover 🙂 At 198 days, I still look for foods that give me the “best bang for my buck” in terms of quantities. I’m assuming this will be a lifelong struggle, but with BLE in my toolkit, I can overcome any obstacle!
Thank you, SPT, for truly showing up with us and showing the world how it’s done ❤️❤️
    Renelle xx

I'm surprised, considering you qualify yourself as a food addict, you could maintain immaculate lines at home for 2 years plus while "slipping up" at restaurants. I can't imagine a crack addict allowing "some crack" at friends' homes, but saying "no thank you" during the rest of the day, years on end. Fascinating. Baffling. The human mind is a puzzle. Personally, it's reassuring to me that you could do that. Perhaps that's real freedom, as it did not trip you up for years and you only added a couple of pounds through the years maintaining this pattern. Your program tells you you should feel guilty about it, but you were a happy, functioning woman for years eating soup plus a salad at restaurants...no tug to eat sugar or flour. That, to me sounds like the purest form of freedom.

oh dear-I'm just starting the program and I will absolutely stick with it but there is an aspect to the program that is troubling. And this vlog reflects it. And that is-the obsessive compulsive aspect of the program " don't eat a piece of the pepper you are chopping off the cutting board"-or words to that effect. Wipe off the oil from a pan just in case it's a fraction of a point over an oz.-or whatever?
"I feel safe and protected" Recovery? oh dear...it's a fine line to let Bright Line drive one over the edge...scary

Hi there! Are you doing Bright Line Eating by doing the Boot Camp inside our Membership? If so, then you'll get all of these elements of the program explained in depth. It's not so much about obsession or compulsion as it is about integrity and breaking bad habits.
For example, we have some folks in our community who would snack their way through meal prepping only to arrive at the dinner table not hungry because they'd been picking off the cutting board or out of the pan as they cooked.
And as for integrity: some food addicts might be prone to having a heavy hand when it comes to things like oil or butter, so we provide clear guidelines as to how to oil a pan without having an undue amount of oil added to your meal.
We hope this sheds some light and we're happy to answer any other questions you might have. 🥰

I can categorically say that the OCD component isn’t there for all of us, and I can tell you why. Some of us read the book and did what it said and DIDN’T join the monthly membership and all the rest of what they’re now pushing!!! There are a boatload of very supportive BLE groups out there where we support each other for free. I find that Susan is getting less relatable now that it’s all about the money. She seems to be doing a lot of psycho-babble that I don’t buy into. I am NEVER joining BLE CORPORATE!!! But I’ll do everything in my power to help others be successful doing BLE!!!!

    I looooooooooooove this video series.
    They are sooooooo helpful
    Genious!
These videos are a million times more helpful than ALL the books out there on this topic. SO on point. Saving us precious time.
BUT.......especially this video made me realise something that I did not understand before....I did not even consider this ever.
Are you actually saying .....that this NEVER goes away? That the damage done to the brain by longtime overeating and longterm food addiction (I am talking age 19 to age 54 which is 35 years of eating and food hell) will never heal? This is something I have to know.
I consider myself exactly as far gone as Dr. Pierce Thompson considers herself. So I am ready to hear the truth. Up untill now I thought it would be O.K. let's say after a year of bright lines and of eating non-addictive natural foods. I thought that at that point I could eat like a normal person and not think about HOW TO STOP EATING AT THE RIGHT POINT.
Are you telling me that my damage is permanent and that I will have to work on this forever?
There is a little voice in my mind that has been telling me so...but I never listened.
If.....from a scientific standpoint.......this damage is permanent and I will have to WORK on this forever........then I will absolutely have to change my approach to an even more serious one.
IF alcoholics have to abstain for life and really never heal that.....even after 20 years......well then that is already the answer.
I thought I knew it all.....but I did not.......I was non aware that that fight is not for a year or so....but that this is lifelong.

Thank you for posting ths. I am also addicted to quantities. "I'm a quantities girl." I also relate to all the thoughts about whether or not to start over at "day one"afer a quantities break. In fact, I have stopped counting days. For me, the starting over is too puniitve and not encouraging. As a teacher, I aim to always encourage. I know that criticism puts students in a state of dysregulation, and we can't learn in a state of dysregulation. We learn best when we feel encouraged and safe. I teach growth mindset to my students and my children, but it is harder to do with my own self-talk. I'm learning... I do better when I don't count the days - and don't ever have to start over.

Welcome to the imperfect human race!
Personally I view eating at restaurants as a form of addiction to processed foods as many foods served there are based on stoking your dopamine receptors! I have eaten great meals out that were just a salad with some added protein
Keeping it simple is keeping it real
Hats off to you for facing up to your self deception ❤️

This hurts a bit! I feel like we'd have loved you through it. I think the worst thing is it's hard to trust what you say now, or have said in the past. I get lying to yourself, but it sounds like what you describe, according to your own words, would have destroyed your peace, and I just don't understand how you can go 2+ years without noticing your peace is gone! Or maybe your peace wasn't gone, in which case maybe bright lines aren't as necessary for peace as BLE makes it seem? I also wonder how you compensated for the weight gain, hopefully in a healthy way? I know in Maintenance you said you are constantly adding and removing food from your plan, maybe you wouldn't have had to be doing that if not for this? A lot of us were shocked hearing that, but now it makes sense. A lot of us model our program off yours and if you're not being truthful, we might get tripped up in ours! I personally hope we get the privilege of you applying your Susan savvy to the idea of lying to ourselves - what a huge, rich topic. I'm sure there is some science there; I'd love to hear more about it.

This is just incredibly disturbing that she has had such a total lack of awareness as the leader of this organisation. I am just dumbfounded. This takes a profound level of denial and I hate to say this but sheer arrogance. And I say this as someone who has tried to follow BLE for years. Was she even following through on what she is teaching people to do.... which is check in and reflect every single day? How could she possibly not be aware when involves one of the single most challenging aspects of BLE? Namely the scales and the one plate rule! These are things that she would be coaching people on day in and day out yet she's totally out of integrity on this? How does one even do this? I am just genuinely appalled. She clearly wasn't taking the daily work seriously or the one plate rule ... yet was promoting these day in and day out. I really am gobsmacked that this is just another vlog.I honestly now doubt everything that she says if she was not even following through and being honest with herself and others about this core principle. I was skipping starters consistently and asking for all my food on one plate and she's not been holding herself to that standard and yet saying she's bright. Wow. This is the straw on the camel's back for me for sure.
