The eye tracking will be really interesting to see in failures/emergencies - controlling attention is such an important skill - thanks, as always, for thinking of new ways to let us share and understand some bits of your brilliant job !
Just came in today! Works like a charm especially for visual flying, and I like that you can turn it off easily when you need the camera to be stable. It certainly makes appreciating the artistry of these software programmers a lot more as well; everything looks a lot more real and immersive. But this is a must for maneuvering, even for simple things like traffic pattern; eliminates the need for three monitors. AND, it also makes right seat flying a lot more plausible in light aircraft that don't employ duplicate instruments on the right side of the cockpit, i.e. 172's, Archers, light twin trainers like the Seminole, etc.
I already found this super educational just seeing where you are looking during takeoff and landing. very excited to see how you use this in the future.
Been using the Tobii for a couple of months now, mostly out of lack of a proper VR system. The one use case I bought it for was to add a bit of head movement and perspective change, to simulate stereoscopic vision. For that purpose, the Tobii is brilliant! I've always found it difficult to judge distance, speed and position in three-dimensional space while looking at a flat computer monitor. Even subtle movements, like moving my head for an inch or so, gives me enough camera translation to trick my brain into 'seeing' three-dimensionally now, which I struggled with during approaches and landings, most of the time. However, after a couple of weeks, I started to deactivate the eye tracking right until final approach, where it really is a game changer. Because for the rest of the flight, when reading instruments, programming the MCDU or pushing knobs and buttons, that whole eye tracking thing is a massive pain in the arse. It really needs a button to just pause head tracking for a while, until you're done interacting with the cockpit. However, when flying GA aircraft or helicopters in VFR, I'm running it full-time activated. That's where it really shines. Big caveat, though: you still might want to have one hell of a computer setup running the sim. Your mileage may vary, but eye tracking in a 30 frames per second (or less) environment may cause migraines and nausea.
Returning from a work trip today, having bought the Tobii Eye Tracker 5, which is waiting for me at home. Can't wait to set it up and jump on the sim! Great video, mate.
The thing I'm really waiting for is natural hand tracking for VR. Being able to press buttons and turn knobs in VR without needing to wear a bulky controller on each hand is going to feel like magic.
@@jojomojo3847 imo the leap motion was always too limited... It could work if there was one leap motion for each section of panel - overhead, ip, pedestal etc
PointCTRL might be interesting for you which puts tiny controlers in your hands.. Actually, I tried hand tracking in DCS and to be honest: I sucks - because if your cockpit at home isnt exactly like the cockpit of the plane you constantly hit things with you hand and cant reach a lot of buttons.
I've had mine for a couple of months. It works as expected but one does have to customize the axis settings and sensitivities. It also unlocks your Windows computer, at least Windows 11 one, since Windows kind of recognizes it as a camera. I like it.
Ive found that it needs eye reset quite often. Most often flying the fenix a320, and the side to side movement seems to cause it to go out of center calibration.
@@320SimPilot I’ve had mine for about a month now. IMO it’s on another level compared to track IR. The next best thing if you don’t have VR. Even been using it playing F1 22, but with eye tracking only and it’s incredible!
I bought the Tobii 4C in early 2018 for xplane11... only to find out xplane wasn't supported and still isn't. I guess I have to figure out where I put it with my move last month to msfs 2020. It worked surprisingly well on Arma 3 and my racing sims, but I changed main monitors so many times since 2018 and due to time I was only running xplane, that I never installed it on the last new monitors. I have had trackir 5 for longer than that, and it's great too, but tobii doesn't require you to wear a hat or a headset. A must have. The way it locked in exactly on what my eyes were locked on never ceased to make me smile.
So gunna be difficult to reconnect. But for some people saying it doesn't zoom. It most definetly does. Like. You move your head forward and down and it zoom into the fmc
Would you be able to share your settings? I simpy cannot find a combination which is smooth. My landings and takeoffs are not smooth as I simply cannot glance down as it throws me all off the runway etc!
Great video, I ordered a Tobii right after watching it. Do you have any information as to what your latest settings are when using with the Fenix A320. You mentioned in your “ill fated” livestream yesterday that you have tweaked them a little bit. Thanks, and keep up the great videos.
I'm a TrackIR user for years and tried the Tobii a few months ago. The tracking speed is a bit slower than TrackIR, but the tracking worked well. Unfortunately the mounting was a big problem. My monitor (LG) is controlled by a stick in the bottom center, exactly where the Tobii has to be mounted. Also the bottom of the monitor is not flat, so it was not possible to mount the Tobii properly. Since it's not possible to mount it on the top, I had to send it back. I really wish Tobii would offer other mounting solutions, since I really liked the head tracking without wearing a head piece.
I'm a casual simmer and have been using the head tracker 5 for about a year. Now it's supported in MSFS officially with 6 DOF it's pretty amazing. I don't want to keep adding intrusive peripherals to my set up so this solution is perfect. It'll take time to get the settings dialled in (i suppose it's the same for track IR), but when they are set right, it's a literal game changer. My only cons have been it disconnects A LOT sometimes crashing the sim and only a system reboot will get it going again (this only seems to happen in MSFS as it has NEVER done it with Star Citizen which is also natively supported). Tobii support is horrible. I've just spent 5 hours trying to get it working again after making the mistake of trying to update the software. And after running through everything on the troubleshooting pages, I got it working again ONLY by deleting the device in hardware manager and reconnecting it so it would automatically re-install the driver. This was a total hail mary as IT IS NOT LISTED ANYWHERE IN THE SUPPORT INFO AS AN OPTION TO RESTORE FUNCTION. slow clap Tobii. When it works it's amazing and 9 times out of 10 a quick reboot will get it working when it falls over, but remember you're rolling the dice on that one time it wont come back and you have to pour hours into figuring out what the problem is.
The biggest advantage of this eye tracker is being able to peer up to turn those pesky landing , taxi and strobe lights on and off. Always a bit cumbersome in the sim.
Cool. But expensive 😏 Would be nice to be without a hat though (as is the case with Track IR). I was wondering how well it tracked the forward and back movements. I don't think you demoed that much 👍
Two big questions.. Xcamera compatibility, and how does it handle head or monitor in different positions between flights. Eg, my monitor is not centered in front of me. I am hesitant because I have TrackIR but haven't used it in 5 years and only touched it a handful of times. This seems more convenient and precise.
Decided to purchase the Tobii EyeTracker 5 based on your well produced showcase of the device. Many thanks. To date still waiting on its arrival, been a week now. Very interesting technology. But there are a few questions that I have ?, do the sensors have an annoying flicker that’s noticeable ?, very difficult to make such a huge investment for it to just sit underneath my monitor and not use it because of a sensor flicker. I have watched many MSFS content creator videos showcasing this eye tracker but no one mentioned anything about flickering, hopefully it is indeed undetectable !. What are the best settings in the options in MSFS ?, will no doubt be different for each person I understand. Can I assign a function key to disable eye tracker ? also to reset it ? and can I zoom in and out ?. I am intrigued as to your settings, as you move around the cockpit seamlessly. Next, do I calibrate by removing my glasses first, ? or do a first calibration with them on ?. Apologies for so many questions. I know your time is valuable and I am aware you simply cannot answer everyone’s questions. Thank you for this insight to a truly innovative product.
I used TrackIR5 for too many years. I just can't get used to Tobii. The tracking algorithm and behaviour have a lot of subtle differences that gave me airsickness when I tried to switch.
Same for me, really struggle with mine, clicking with the mouse is difficult, if you move your eyes slightly you then have to re-align the mouse again.
A320 question. Why does the fenix a320 give me a very early warning that Im not in CLB Thrust? Ive barely taken off, verified positive climb, and as Im raising the gear it starts giving me an audible and visual warning. Is there a setting I might be missing that is causing this?
Maybe your THR RED/ACC value on PERF/Take-off page left on default. Are you taking off with MAN/Flex? When you reach the pre-defined THR RED height, the A320 will require you to set the thrust to CLB detent where the A/THR start to operate. What's the message on the ECAM when you have this warning? It could help to determine your issue more precisely. :)

Just a question, in the manual it says it only supports up to 30inch monitors. As you have a 32inch monitor have you had any issues with eye tracking or head movement?
I have a dumb question here - when you turn your head, the view changes, but your monitors obviously don't move around your desk. How do you avoid a situation where your head moves so much that you can't even look at the monitor anymore? (I hope this makes sense).
Generally on head tracking stuff (TrackIR, Tobii) head movement isn’t 1:1, you can adjust curves so that say you turn your head 30° left, in game it will go 120°, you can adjust the sensitivity with the respective software
