July 2022 and Covid19 is still with us. Do you do the hub motor as a DIY kit? If so, how much? I need to electrify my ICE Sprint 20" wheels as my medical condition is getting worse. Stay safe.
Can you get both mid-drive and hub drive for maximum "assist"? ....in a fat quad? ...with suspension and a comfy seat that's good for cornering? Yes, I live near Thompson Pass, Montana where legendary misjudgments have been made by those no-longer with us. ...and regenerative breaking for the 11 mile down hill speed checks. 4 wheel breaking would probably be a smart alternative to the parachute. Optional windscreen tough enough for the emergency use against branches, rocks and wildlife?
OK..... What i don't here is the Pedaling- Is that to help charge the battery? Or is that due to the motor being weak as it loses power going up hills etc?
Question. Hub motor when turned off or set to 0 assistance do you notice any back EMF... (Back Electro Magnetic Force). It happens on permanent magnetic motors. Its the electric current in a motor that is created when coasting which adds a lot of resistance to coasting and or peddling without power. I have a hub motor on my bike very similar to your hub motor it becomes a lot harder to ride at 0 assist and or no power. Lift the trike. Try simply spinning the hub motor by hand time how long it coasts. Do the same with the mid drive it will coast much longer. Its kind of a large effect. My real question is do you notice the difficulty peddling with a mid drive with zero assist? The mid drive should do better without at freewheel coasting because the motor is disconnected from the drive wheel due to the rear sprocket. given that alone I like the mid drive. How does the mid drive feel with 0 assist? Like when you just need to get home with a dead battery. my bike is actually quite a bit more work. I am beginning to talk myself into a mid drive over hub drive for my velomobile.
Those Rohloffs can last a lifetime, so might be one part worth getting second hand. Found a lightly used Rohloff for $450 - just missing gearbox cover/shifter/cables. Would you guys be interested in doing a build if I can source and ship the parts? I’d like to get the cost down as much as possible by spending a few weeks/months to acquire the pricey bits myself. I’m good and patient at deal hunting just lack mechanical know-how.
Do you have any trikes loosley similar to this that have a 50 mile electric range and can hit 45 mph on flat pavement without pedaling? I am wondering if I might be able to use something sortove like this as a commuter but it wouldn't be practical without hitting those minimum performance specs. My employer does have a parking area for motorcycles.
Is that my FatCat V3 in the background at about 13:50? (You know a customer is excited when they scour each video hoping for a glimpse of their trike ;-)
I have a JC70 trike and I am considering putting a 1500 Watt Hub Motor from Amazon on my trike. I know that it is bigger than is legal here in Canada. BUT! I have my reasons. The investment in a trike is sizable abut there is no insurance for Bicycles of any sort here in Saskatchewan. Ergo, go over the limit so that it has to be licenced as a Moped. By doing that I can then licence it with SGI as a Moped. I will need a Motorcycle Licence to do that, but I have had that since I was a teen and I am in my 70's now. What are your opinions on running with this much power on a bike that is already pretty fast?
Watching from Gods Own Country (that’s Yorkshire to everyone outside England) and really love your channel. Guys are funny, Lady makes a good host (helps that she’s easy on the eyes too). I have an EMtb and don’t know what I’d do with a Trike but watch your videos cos they are fun and informative.
I love my trike but that's getting into motorcycle/car prices. Just for reference, a 2020 Honda CBR600RR costs 11k, gets 44mpg, and does 150+mph with an 84,000 watt motor.
Yeah but in 5yrs will it be worth anywhere near what you'll get for an ICE trike of the same age..... ….No it won't. In fact the Honda is only worth around 8k as soon as you register it and take delivery. Plus you have to licence, insure & put gas in it, which all cost's $$$. You don't need to do any of those for the ICE trike & it doesn't pollute either.
like the seat and armrests...nice touch. Nuvinci rear hub with harmony auto shift interface, would reduce manufacturing costs with the bafang mid drive, and the few extra ounces of weight would not be noticeable. 11 grand is intolerable, unexplainable, even with the pricey Rohloff hub, however. At that price, I would expect a couple of flexible solar panels over the rider for shade, and battery charging. When’s that coming? Cheers from northern British Columbia!
So if you're carrying a lot of weight like you're touring and you're going to trailer behind you which one would you most likely put on something like that that will get you the best of everything touring. because I'm talking about off road touring you know and on the road touring so obviously speed is not at all something that I would be looking for which set up would you recommend
The P860c and 860c displays are in analog mode when the CLOCK is being displayed.. Analog is the wrong refresh rate for day use (sunlight readable). So if you want to see your expensive display in the daytime when you ride, consider opening CLOCK setting, and "HIDE"the clock.. That will put the Display into Digital mode. That refresh rate is much better for display visibility... I don't know why Bafang has not offered and "IPS" display with all the bells and whistles... Those displays are designed for use in direct sunlight.. And are used on high end computer monitors that are used in natural sunlight.
A Phase Runner or a BAC 800 would increase the Bafang's amps to 40+ continuous and 60 Amps peak and allow for overvolting at 72 volts. Looks like a hoot, i may hafta invest in a Tad. Will Utah come up with a frame that allows a Bafang Ultra? I do prefer the torque sensor!
Really enjoying my thousand-watt hub motor, now if the Utah weather would just cooperate. I would like to see a more in-depth video on the Consul operation, for instance when I pull my battery off the clock resets, is that the way it's supposed to be?
Thanks for the Coronavirus tip, that's why I'm drinking with Rolling Rock this fine evening. I really wish I could afford a awesome trike. Once I win the lottery, I'll buy a bunch from you awesome peeps.
For those of us who haven't yet won the lottery, and can't afford to spend $7k-$11k on a recumbent tricycle, I'll be building my own from scrap bicycle parts. Other than maybe $1k for an electric motor, controller, and a doublesize battery pack, i don't see how these things can sell for so much. j3-pro
Cool, I would be happy to get a purely peddle type that is able to be adapted at later dates to electric. Beats hopping in my car everyday just to drive one mile and pay for gas. I have an ICE Adventure with a Shimano E6100 e-assist, and the gears change automatically, but I would like more power. Is there any way to convert what I have to something with more power? Thank you!
You guys seem to be pretty active with mix and matching-how about using an internally geared rear hub with a 500w Bafang mid drive motor on a HPV Scorpion FS20? My new motor has amazing acceleration which needs up-changing gears by 2 or 3 at a time. So why not add an automatic gear hub which can handle that power? Can you recommend a gear hub which does not break the bank? Have you tried the Enviolo or any other good brand gear hub?
Are you running strictly the thumb throttle or do you have it set up with pedal assist? Love the display, very nice. Love LOve LOVE the middrive and Rholoff combination.
I've got an old Fun Cycle but it's absolutely mint....is there a good kit I can buy to make it electric....why don't today's trikes have the lean capability built in? I like the two front wheel design but no seat lean ?
An ASI BAC or a Grin Controller can turn Utah Trikes Rear hub or the BBSHD into a 72 Volt 3500 Watt, concrete slayer... for some 50+ MPH touring... add a Fairing for added (Aero)....

Yes, the Rohloff would just about double your gear range. We can build you an upgrade kit. Shoot us an email to trikes@utahtrikes.com and we can put a quote together for you.
UT - do you have any concerns about the weight of the BBSHD out on the end of the Adventure boom? I want one! But that just seems like a lot of weight to hang out there. Comments?
Maybe you should tell your customers how the midgear motors eventually destroy your chain and shifting components. When you are in the middle of no where and you blow your chain, you will want the hub motor. You basically trade performance for reliability. Hub motor is much better.
After selling thousands of hub motors and middrive motors, we'll recommend the middrive motor every day. Customers report significantly fewer problems with middrive motors than with hub motors.
Can you provide a vid where we can hear the motors under load? I'm very curious how loud they are and if there is a noticeable noise difference between the hub motor and the mid-drive.
As long as it doesn't get submerged it will last a long time. Otherwise, the sealed bearings are replaceable. It has far less moving parts than the Bafang middrive. With maintenance it should last indefinitely.
I have an Catrike Expedition that I bought with a Bionx system. Ran it for several years but Bionix is no more in North America and the battery was degrading. I think I had about 6000 km on it. I replaced the complete system 3 years ago, went with a geared hub motor. Can't remember how many Km I have on this one, somewhere between 3000 to 4000km. I have it set up with torque sense assist and usually run about 80 watts until I need a bit more assist, then I turn up the power to get over/past/ around whatever is in the way. I can turn up to 1000 watts but hardly find I need it, usually 400 watts is more then enough for what I do. Both hub motors have cause me zero grief. I can't see any reason why one would not last for years. Of course just like anything mechanical, the more power you put through the shorter the life span will be. I have never tried a middrive, but I love the idea of one teamed up with the Rholoft. Oh Yeah!!!
23,000 miles and counting on my direct drive Nine Continent hubbie since 2008 indicated on my Grin cycleanalyst I drilled holes in the side covers to let moisture escape and keep the bike inside at night. Two bearing changes in the hub motor. They are extremely reliable.

I tried to make this all into one reply but my phone's kind of new to me so what I'm asking now is do your work with social security disability for someone like me that just a standard trike I've toppled a couple trying them out they did not have a stable turn radius meant they wouldn't take it standard turn that you can basically do want me to bicycle and I having a little bit of the ability to carve into a turn
That is the cost of people buying foreign products and dependency on foreign sources. It is the result of USA debt as well. If more people spent time mining, creating and enveloping their own products like batteries, rims, motors, frames, break pads, disc's for breaks ect... and didn't sell out due to bigger company pressure. Then ebikes would be way cheaper. People rather complain and do nothing to improve prices. Who do you know that makes electric motors other than Bafang? If you have 20 workers building bikes and each of them own houses and have children to feed and raise. What do you think their cost of living would have to be per year to live somewhat comfortably? 50k per year? 70k per year? How many bikes would you have to sell at 2k just to support those 20 people that work for your biking business? What do you do when business is slow and bikes don't sell? How much do you pay for machinery, metal, and other parts? How much to pay for electricity to keep building warm during winter and cool during summer and for all the lights and electricity needed for tools? To support 20 people at 70k a year only not including possible benefits this employees may have. Your company would have to sell enough bikes to make up 1,400,000 a year and 1,000,000 a year for 50k. That is just employee payments alone. You still have bike parts, frame fabrication tools, the cost of metal for frames, electric, and we haven't even touched taxes yet for small businesses. In my opinion it would be wise for people to start their own companies and not sell out to bigger companies in order to drop prices. It would also be in the best interest of complainers to reverse some business laws and standards. The initial expense for starting your own company can be a killer thanks to ridiculous laws.
Hi guys, love your channel! May I ask you a question? I am in the UK. I have given up riding a bike because of balance issues and an inability to pedal for long or uphill. If it's 4 wheels it's not a trike people, and for 11 grand witch these AREN worth that kind of money and I can spend 3 to 400 and build a better trike , all these look like someone's looking to exten their laziness from home to a lazy ass chair on wheels
@@andrewarcher5611 He meant 4"(inch) wheels/tires, a phat trike in other words! A trike with THREE 4" by 26" tires!!! He left the inch part off after the number 4! Also, this is an expensive version, there are many out there well under $4,000 with good suspension and the like, starting around $1999 before any specials added on! With the electric motor and batteries it could go if on a base phat trike UT carries could go from the $1999 to the $4000 or possibly up to $7000 depending on the type of motor and the battery package one might want, but I think the $7000 range would include some upgrades!
I picked up my ICE SprintX last week with the 1000 watt motor (mid drive). Took a ride around Payson near the shop. Again took the trike out at a nice trail on the way back to SLC. The next ride around my home I hit 36 mph on level peddling as fast as gearing would allow. I’m pretty sure the displayed speed is a bit high. Anyway the thing is crazy fast. The sad news is I was hit by a pickup truck about 5 miles from home. I was moving slowly as the light had turned red. I was in a “bike lane” (aren’t we grateful for those white lines the city painted on the road?) The trike is now pretty much a pile of noodles. The boom with the aforementioned motor is one of the only parts undamaged. The display and throttle also seem okay. I’m extremely sore from head to toe. Miraculously no broken bones. High end mips helmet is cracked. Don’t skimp on your helmet kids!!! I’m letting the jury deliberate about the motor when I get a new bike which I believe insurance will pay for in full. More about the motor. You definitely pass everyone on any bike. Hills are just not an issue. The bad news, you really notice the weight gain. The trike no longer feels nimble. If you miscalculated a trip and had to ride unassisted you’d likely have to call for towing. The battery seems to have a short life between charges. Way too early to tell. Battery is close to 9 lbs. can’t guess the weight of the motor but it’s pretty hard to lift up to my Subaru Outback even with battery removed. Depending on body healing time and insurance claim for a new trike, I may consider going to a 250 watt. Experimenting could become very expensive. Utah Trikes is a class act.

Do you do the hub motor as a DIY kit?
If so, how much?
I need to electrify my ICE Sprint 20" wheels as my medical condition is getting worse.
Stay safe.
Does the Bafang Middrive have a torsion option? Or should I be looking at the Tongsheng?
I was here for the dual motor 1000W hub & 1000W mid drive. 😁
Love the revealing of prices per unit. I love these trikes and maybe next year I'll have my own.
You all ROCK...Keep the videos coming!!
Thank you! We've got a lot more in the works.
You’re videos are great. A lot good info.
Sorry for the nitpicking, but the “a” in Ba Fang is a short “a” sound as in the a in father-not a long a as in snake fang. Love your vids by the way.
OK.....
What i don't here is the Pedaling- Is that to help charge the battery?
Or is that due to the motor being weak as it loses power going up hills etc?
06:40 - Filmed at 4:16 AM??!! You guys are DEDICATED!
I want to mostly pedal and use electric only as an assist on hills or as an emergency system if I overdo a trip. Which should I purchase?
Any possibility the guys had a prefered setup after the comparison rides?
Kate you generate revenue for this company Utah trikes 🌲🌲🌲😁😁😁😁
:) it certainly is!
Utah Trikes AWESOME!!!! I can’t wait!!!!
Can you order a quad with belt drive?
Watching from Gods Own Country (that’s Yorkshire to everyone outside England) and really love your channel. Guys are funny, Lady makes a good host (helps that she’s easy on the eyes too). I have an EMtb and don’t know what I’d do with a Trike but watch your videos cos they are fun and informative.
Rich people toys. Fun to look at.
Another great video i hope I’ll get to own a trike one day keep up the good work guys
I would like to know what drives your dream trike
do you offer the 20" front wheels with hub motors? I want to build an old Catrike with front wheel hub drive.
Im adding a 1500w 27.5 inch hub wheel to my trike so should have enough power. Im am just fabricating the rear drop out extenders for the wheel
Yeah, you have to buy gas for the motor cycle. BUT,.... You have to buy new battery’s for the Trike or Quad in about 3 years. Cost about $1,500. +.
Interesting
like the seat and armrests...nice touch.
The mid-drive with a Rohloff seems to be the sweet spot but what are its down sides? Price? Range?
With a 1,000 Watt motor, it is considered a motorcycle (where I live), a license/insurance/road tax etc.. needed, helmet etc
What is the weight limit on the trikes
I plan on getting the Fat Tad CXS but if I get Bafang 750W is it power assist to help climb hills or is it to be a stupid ev?
A Phase Runner or a BAC 800 would increase the Bafang's amps to 40+ continuous and 60 Amps peak and allow for overvolting at 72 volts. Looks like a hoot, i may hafta invest in a Tad. Will Utah come up with a frame that allows a Bafang Ultra? I do prefer the torque sensor!
Really enjoying my thousand-watt hub motor, now if the Utah weather would just cooperate. I would like to see a more in-depth video on the Consul operation, for instance when I pull my battery off the clock resets, is that the way it's supposed to be?
But can it Out Run A Sasquatch 🦍
Thanks for replying, I wish I could franchise a place here in Montana. Without capital, expertise, & business knowledge it's kinda hard to do.
I Love the Channel and your Shop.
Ok so how much for 2 hub motors and a mid drive with a 6v battery setup?
Both are setup to use pedal assist or throttle.
Is your UTCustom hub motor available as a do-it-yourself option - can’t see it on your site?
Another great video. My question is have you ever done a video on the TonSheng emotor system? Thanks.
Tom Cross
Do your motors have ReGen capability ??
Are there any electric assist bike or trikes with regenerative breaking?
Can you deliver to Thailand and at what cost.
We do! email us at trikes@utahtrikes.com for a shipping quote!!
I've got an old Fun Cycle but it's absolutely mint....is there a good kit I can buy to make it electric....why don't today's trikes have the lean capability built in? I like the two front wheel design but no seat lean ?
so these are not pedal assist? these are straight up motors?
Hi, What is the minimum and maximum pedal length to the seat (in adventure)? Can you give a complete description of the size ?
I am also working on it with solar roof .
Is there an electric motor that allows for regen breaking?
Yes, our hub motor shown has regenerative braking.
An ASI BAC or a Grin Controller can turn Utah Trikes Rear hub or the BBSHD into a 72 Volt 3500 Watt, concrete slayer... for some 50+ MPH touring... add a Fairing for added (Aero)....
Can you put both systems in one trike?
Good question.
What mid drive would be the best for a ebike car and could you run two mid drives together?
Commonle😂ople minus?eksiği nedir neye ihtiyacı var?
I think I prefer the Bafang .
Could you have a segment on the different types of bottles I have a back injury in my left leg the sides off the battle maybe you could talk about that tomorrow
Whats the best set up for a duel chain trike in a mountainus region? Is it possible to do rear wheel drive with duel chain? What are the pros and cons with converting a duel chain trike to electric i guess is what i would like to know if anyone has any knowledge on that
I can really see people that live within 10 miles or so of their work that a eTrike would be a great option for them. I have a question though - how do people transport their trike? Trailer, truck bed, hitch mount, back of a SUV, ?
As long as it’s not raining
can you customize bike on commision ? if someone has a bike that needs upgrading.
I'd love some numbers for the torque and top speed of each of the motors you're offering.
We're working on some more all-encompassing reviews of each system. There's a lot that goes into a video like that, so it might be a little while. Once the weather here starts cooperating a little better hopefully we can complete our research and make it public!
First of all, great video!, two beautiful builds and I'm most impressed that Dillon come in at 4:17 AM to do the video, according to the control panel at 6:45 of the video. LOL. Thanks for another entertaining, educational video.
Heh, good eye!
Haaaaaaa
Max speed? Range?
Awesome vid. I Have ICE FS HD that has the Bafang 750 that I had installed last summer. Its has the 9speed on the back that came with the Trike. Do you guys do upgrades to older trikes? I am thinking of the Rolofh would be a good start. Thanks
Yes, the Rohloff would just about double your gear range. We can build you an upgrade kit. Shoot us an email to trikes@utahtrikes.com and we can put a quote together for you.
An upgrade with a new powder coat maybe. Doable I bet. Thanks will do.
UT - do you have any concerns about the weight of the BBSHD out on the end of the Adventure boom? I want one! But that just seems like a lot of weight to hang out there. Comments?
Adding greatly to the complexity, but if the front wheels had small hub motors then the rear wheel could have any gearing desired.
00:13 is Jack Black?
what is the torque for the torquiest hub motor, the bafang mid drive and the shimano e8000, thanks
What size batteries were those?
48V 17.5AH
which setup is the better climber, is it a little better or a lot better
It's hard to beat the middrive paired with a Rohloff. It's like having a 3000W+ hub motor.
@@UtahTrikesOnline that's what i've always read but that big a difference, wow, thanks
Can you provide a vid where we can hear the motors under load? I'm very curious how loud they are and if there is a noticeable noise difference between the hub motor and the mid-drive.
It's something we'll include in an upcoming comparison video. Keep an eye out.
@@UtahTrikesOnline Great! Thank you.
What's the longevity of the hub motor in other words how long do they last 10 years 9 years 1 year 2 years 4 years 5.5 years 2.8 years
As long as it doesn't get submerged it will last a long time.
Hey I got to comment I really was thinking and probably a reply I was wondering if they build trailers
Looking to be able to put a cooler on the trailer for a store run being able to bring back cold stuff in my cooler and still have the place to put other groceries that don't have to be cold
$11,000 for a tricycle? WOW. That is insane but more power to ya.
I have a little 3 wheel sit on scooter. What I really need is a etrike that I can pedal a bit, can carry a couple of bags of shopping, and can fold. Do you have any suggestions or possibly a video about strikes for folk like me?
Keep safe!

Great 👍Job Thank you 😊🙏👏👍
can a cheaper Nuvinci IG be used with a mid drive setup or is that too much torque for the nuvinci to handle?
We have set up many a Nuvinci with the Bafang 500W-1000W motors and have had no issues.
When I’m ready an set I want to get the 4 wheel big tire all Terrain riding trike !! 26” wheels Well tell lights headlights turn signals also a rack in the back made like a basket case I want to go shopping or Hunter something heavy duty because I’m 250 pounds but I would like to have something up towards 350 for his weight and a tow hitch
If it's 4 wheels it's not a trike people, and for 11 grand witch these AREN worth that kind of money and I can spend 3 to 400 and build a better trike , all these look like someone's looking to exten their laziness from home to a lazy ass chair on wheels
@@andrewarcher5611
He meant 4"(inch) wheels/tires, a phat trike in other words!
Great video and valuable info. Maybe I missed the part when you talked about the top speed of your 1000 watt motor?
Road legal or Modded?
