    Whenever I watch videos like this one I admire the engineering but always my excitement deflates upon learning the purchase price.

    • @Cyberdactyl
      @Cyberdactyl 2 года назад +30

      Exactly. As I watched the video, I added the cost of items as I'm fairly familar with the cost of most of those components AND included the raised cost of carbon fiber which is incorporated into some of the fairings and came up with around $5-8K.
      Learning it starts at $10,500 was a major turn off. If the Fed could provide a IRC 30D of around 20% of the cost, THEN I might look into it more seriously.

    • @HansKeesom
      @HansKeesom 2 года назад +15

      The price is not unexpected.
      You can get good recumbent bike for less, but with less weather protection and less comfort. Adding electric will raise it's price considerably.
      The problem might soon be you can get a second hand electric car for this price ....

    • @packohub1145

    • @DFX2KX
      @DFX2KX 2 года назад +14

      @@packohub1145 part of the appeal here is that it *isn't* a car, you get to use bike infrastructure, and in some cases just ignore traffic rules (such as lane-splitting, or more properly lane filtering when at these speed, splitting is highway and usually illegal). My Ebike cost used-car prices, but the sidewalk here is widened for bike use, and serves as my personal lane. Considering the bike can do 20MPH handily on throttle, faster when I'm pedaling, I'm not too far behind car travel times.

    I'm so happy for Fabrizio. I have been following his work in Victoria on the Electrom 1 for several years now, and I think he has designed and engineered a truly unique pedelec - like based personal vehicle. The uniqueness is a pedel chain which not only goes to directly power the rear wheel via human force, but also goes to a generator, and the electrom automatically switches over to electric power assistance after you reach about 10 KM an hr I think he told me. You also have the option to go 100 % electric and upto 4 batteries for extreme range (I'm thinking up or down Vancouver Island type range, or close to it). The man is an engineer, who thinks outside the box.

      The big problem in N.America is lane splitting/filtering. Riding a motorcycle is very frustrating because you are basically treated as a car. Bicycles are so much faster in urban areas.

    As an add idea, would be really good to see a modular canopy, one for the summer like that 'open' pop-up canopy/fairing and a more longer 'close' one that covers the head ( when it rains/light snow ) which clips at the back end and doubles as a more secure handle for rear passenger.

    To be precise, the recumbent position puts your big thigh muscles closer in height to your heart, a trick invented in aerobatic fixed wing planes a few decades ago. The Achilles's heel in your design is where the instrument panel fits. That's in a very vulnerable place of your anatomy in a frontal injury. That's an important consideration as a vehicle designed to negotiate traffic. Maybe if the top is made to quickly purposely pop off in an accident...

    This Electrom bike is better looking than most. Most e-recumbents work impressively well but still look like the concoction of parts that they are. E-recumbents have been around for a while yet so far no inspired BENNOs have focused their talent to create user friendly, highly functional yet truly appealing aero enclosed e-recumbents much less coin a term for them that sticks. This category has everything going for it, time is on its side, low purchase cost compared to cars or motorcycles (soon), relatively small and lightweight although long, ultra low energy cost and fun to ride in weather that rules out bicycles. They make sense in ways that matter. It's early days, what a blast.

      @edwong3 Yes. It is legally a bicycle for now. But laws can change pretty easily. New ideas that are perfectly legal can be made illegal if someone in authority wants to. A law that restricts the definition of what an electric bicycle is could be passed without any papers or media sharing the news for how "boring" and "inconsequential" it is. No one would notice. Once the law is approved, it is too late.
      Happens very often.

      Recumbents were band from racing in 1934 by the UCI, a.k.a. the board that regulates the Tour de France. They were too fast.

    I've seen a few of these and they all have vestigial windscreens which you look over. Is it so you can see more of the road when you look down?

    What does it cost?
    I like the design.
    Weather coverage is nice.
    I like the storage on this vehicle.
    That's one of the sale features that tempts me to look closer at this

    how does the remote steering work? im working on plans for building something similar to this with wood and composite(or doped fabric) and the best i can think of is routing cables through part of the frame to control the steering.

      There's a diagram of the steering system on the electrom website (check video description). A similar system is also used by many cargo bikes.

    Brilliant. 150lbs is an amazing weight. Not really a product until prices are listed. Generators are notoriously inefficient, is it mostly for show? At 30km/hr on flat-pavement, how much does all-day (i.e. moderate) pedaling extend range? Same with regen. Going up and down hills, how much does regen contribute to range? (not criticizing with either question, it is obvious both systems are no-brainers regardless). How might such a bike fare on a cross-continent trip (e.g. GDT)?

    does it HAVE to be so long? It could have the common recumbent layout where the pedals are in front and the front wheel is under your knees, and then you gain almost 2 feet of length. They handle differently but they aren't bad.

    Oh yeah 😎. USS in Recumbent lingo means under-Seat-Steering, the other is: OSS: Over-Seat-Steering.
    Other Recumbent bicycle 🚲 lingo is: SWB = "Short-Wheel-Base" Frame and LWB = "Long-Wheel-Base" Frame. "SWB" Frames is where the Front wheel (usually 16" wheel) is between the Rider and the Cranks. The Cranks, with the chainring gears and pedals are on an adjustable Boom to move in and out depending upon the length of the peddlers legs🦵 😳 😄 .
    . This good 👍 looking E-Bike is your basic "LWB". LWB Frames the Front wheel is in Front of the Cranks, like a Tadpole Recumbent Trike. The adjustment for the Rider's legs🦵 is done by moving the Seat 💺 backwards and forwards. (NO Crank Boom)
