There's no such thing as a good person who does nothing. What's scary is that so many people aren't really good people to begin with. *That* is why democracy is fragile. It's the thin veneer that separates us from savagery, and at this moment, the greatest superpower the world has ever known is on the verge of tearing it down. And it if comes to that, it's the end for us. The irony is that if we'd stayed savage, instead of flourishing for a brief period of time, the stakes would never have gotten this high to begin with.
James. Yes you are right. It just seems funny that in America there are Nazis that are celebrated. Less than 70 years ago we and a lot of other countries fight a war to erase it from the Earth. Now, sons and daughters of men who died are cheering the return.

Mr. Maher's argument and appeal to vote are 100%, absolutely, totally on the nose. It's about the best speech I've ever heard encouraging our citizens to do their civic duty, whatever their age or background. I am also fed up with the Goodwins, Meachams, Beschlosses and others I otherwise respect acting like they are already looking back blithely at the Trump era a century from now and noting how we managed to get through this crisis too, though they have no idea as of yet how this crisis is going to turn out. To compare the Civil War or 9/11 or the Depression to the crisis caused by the ascendance of Pres. Trump to the highest level of power in the nation is ridiculous, isn't it? This is a different sort of crisis. Those had nothing to do with an attempt by a leader to destroy all opposition to himself. Did we succeed in overcoming the Depression automatically because we survived the Civil War? No. They required different kinds of solutions. There was no guarantee we'd find them. If you believe that bouncing back from a crisis is an automatic given regardless of the sort of crisis, that is like saying that fires caused by a match, gasoline or burning cooking oil are all the same and since you knew how to extinguish the cooking oil fire in your kitchen, you will surely succeed in preventing a truck carrying 9,000 gallons of gasoline from exploding once it catches on fire, though the two cannot be overcome in the same way. This is a new sort of political "fire" we're dealing with here, as Mr. Maher pointed out right at the beginning of his exhortation to vote. It is an attempt to fundamentally change the relationship between the government and the people and the president and the rest of the government apparatus. We citizens? We're all that's left to stop that fundamental change from happening, it seems, since the current Congress acts beholden to the single man in the Oval Office. It isn't going to be prevented because we believe we're "a shining city on a hill," if we take no action, action being showing the president and the minority who support the president how truly small a minority they are. They have the right to be heard, but not the right to take over.
The origins of this crisis are unlike any other in US history and stem from basic weaknesses in the Constitution; these may have taken over 200 years to surface, but were inherent when it was created. George Washington foresaw this in his final address to Congress - the dangers of factionalism and loyalty to political parties and their leaders. If Trumpism has arisen and created the present crisis, unless the Constitution is revisited and seriously revised, then there is absolutely nothing to prevent a similar future reoccurrence and perversion of democracy. As things presently stand, given the amending procedure and current rabid factionalism, it is doubtful the very necessary amendments will get passed, let alone see the light of day.
adscri What specific changes need to be made? I'd suggest these two: *1)* Corporations are not people and do not have inalienable human rights. Corporations are a creation of government and have only those rights granted through acts of law. *2)* The Electoral College, if it ever did serve such functions as "protecting small states from big states," no longer serves such purposes and has devolved into a farce of itself and now only serves to pervert American politics. It even failed in its major purpose, which was to mollify the slave states. We had the Civil War anyway. It is time to get rid of the Electoral College.
Steven Rivers I am not a fan of Trump whatsoever. But I think both Democratic leaders as well as republican leaders are extremely corrupt and beholden to special interest groups, corporations, and the military-industrial complex.
Looking on from Australia, I can't help but feel like this is the watershed moment for America. I think the Unites States has been responsible for some morally questionable behaviour over the last two hundred years, but I always felt as though, on balance, collective American values were righteous. If we have to be ruled by a superpower, I'd vastly prefer the US to China, India or Russia. But if the result on Tuesday isn't a wholesale rejection of what has occurred over the past two years, then I think we can say goodbye to America as a force for good in the world and we will see a once great nation begin to fall.
Yeah, and under Pres Trump our standard of living is HIGHER than any recorded standard of living in human history and our home-ownership rate is HIGHER than any other country's.

What specific changes need to be made? I'd suggest these two:
*1)* Corporations are not people and do not have inalienable human rights.

Steven Rivers I agree, corruption as of late is terrible And it makes a mockery out of our so called democracy.

Thanks for Everything Bill! You have been an anchor for many of us since November 2016....
im actually conservative, but i cant stand trump. good luck on tuesday guys. i voted blue, and i hope you do too!
dem0ninthemist I'm a right wing liberal. I can't believe I ever thought that he was better than Clinton.
I never voted for him, but I thought he would be marginally better. Boy was I wrong.
Anyways, I voted blue for my first time this election. My County is usually red, but it's looking awfully blue this time around.
dem0ninthemist the trumpers, and religious right have stolen the GOP
As someone who is Center-left, I always tried to come up with the opposite example. Not sure what it is. Kayne vs John Kasich? lol I’d vote for Kasich.
@@HKim0072 LOL I feel you. It's known... to all people who actually voted for Clinton.......
@@Rechard1107 People just hate Clinton. On the right, it’s kinda wishy-washy reason they can’t articulate (and then you have the crazy conspiracy people). For me, she was too much of a politician. Too careful with a hint of inauthencity. She was a very good Senator though.
i live in the UK, someone vote democrat for me will you?
We simply adore you Bill! 💗do the world a favor and "apply" for the position as Mr. President:)
I got chills watching this. The worst thing is that this isn't only happening in the US. In Europe and other places there's been a huge rise of the far-right parties and it should concern us all. Get out and vote, it WILL affect you the rest of your life.
Also, finally someone called Donald a wannabe dictator, have been saying this for months but every liberal/progressive person/politician/reporter/etc didn't wanna call him that because "omg what about the deplorables?".
Jordi Vanderwaal facts
Stephen Colbert has been saying it for a long time too
Jordi: When we defeat Trump the rest of the world will follow. The neo-nazi/white supremacists in Europe and elsewhere have been feeding off Trump's success. If he fails, they will crawl back under the rocks where they live when Democracy is ascendent.
@@hopeemch8511 Your wet dreams are of neo-nazis and white supremacists since these two groups are in very low numbers in the places you mentioned. You just don't like people defending themselves from forced social engineering. You are the nazis to be honest. You are the racists, the haters, the fear mongers. And your time is coming... don't you worry about that.
Its always useful to step back and ask why far right parties are rising up across the globe. Hint: its not nazis
well said Bill!
outstanding & world-class 👏👏👏
Yo're not in good hands, you're in tiny little hands.
Barbara LeMere Tiny little hands that smell like p-ssy.
I don't have anything clever to add so... FUCK TRUMP
Cable news should broadcast this speech instead of the latest Trump Klan Rally
Ha, I like what you did there. Because Trump was hanging black people at the rally. Good point. I bet you won over a dozen new voters.

Mr. Maher, I have been watching your show since it first came out when I was just a teenager. I can honestly say that this segment of NewRules is hands down the greatest you have ever done. For now. Thank you.

Wow that picture and footage of americans doing a nazi salute terrified me. During ww2 of all things! Granted it wasn't until the end of 41 did usa enter the war bit still....
FDR was a socialist who gave half of Europe to Stalin on a silver platter.
@@richardschiffman7657 You do know that the dividing of Germany was a joint effort by the Allies to prevent literal Nazis from working towards WW3, right? Yeah, it had unintended consequences, but the USSR was a key player in the defeat of the Axis forces. Meanwhile modern US presidents on both sides of the fence are happy to hand over most of the Middle East to Saudi Arabia because they're the rich ones and they've got juicy oil.
So much bullshit here...
@ Richard Schiffman: Stalin had already conquered half of Europe when WW2 ended. FDR didn't let him have it, he was just unable to make him give it back. What was he supposed to do, start another war against the USSR?
@ Joe Chief:
Uhm... what? The division of Germany (and Europe in general) was the result of how much ground each side had conquered when the war ended. To prevent the nazis from rising again there was this thing called denazification. Well, in West Germany at least, in the east they didn't care about it that much, since they just wanted to replace one dictatorship with another.
@@richardschiffman7657 FDR also imprisoned 100000's of Americans against their will and stripped them of their citizenship simply because they had slanty eyes. You want to talk about trump trying to get rid of birth right citizenship look at history the Democrats have already done it before.
Japanese Americans were not stripped of their citizenship. Not even all Japanese Americans were But those who lived on the West Coast were detained unconstitutionally. So shitty and unlawful but not the same.

... Many of us Canadians would love to be able to vote on Tuesday... Pity we can't... If the Americans only knew how scary it was in the 30s and 40s to live near Hitler's Domain... they might understand how Canadians feel like living so close to the "GREAT GOBLIN"...

Didn't that district already go red?
One of the best New Rule yet. So much truth.
I'm not saying Trump is Hitler....I say Trump is "Small Putin".
But this is only the beginning. America, please, stop him!
With all you can say about Putin - he is a power monger, a machinator in every aspect, maybe even nearly a dictator - but he is not isolationist.
Putin at least understand, that Russia maybe can survive at it's own - but not thrive.
Further I think, Putin doesn't really care about being personally insulted (as long as it doesn't affect his power)
And this are two of the biggest mistakes Trump is about to make.
One - he is about to isolate the US from the rest of the world. I mean, calling Canada a danger to American interests (to justify his tarrifs against them) but in the same breath praising North Corea
The same for the European Union and others. Trying to cancel treaties - just because it wasn't him who hashed them out.
Here it blends into two - his egocentric behaviour.
The constant fighting and alienating the free press. Generations of presidents, even if harshly criticised held up free speech and the press. And even if not - no one went nearly that far, as far as I know.
Canceling deals on a whim, because he felt insulted...
It is not about him. It is about the country he has sworn to lead.
And even if I can't really proof it, I at least feel inclined to think of Putin as a more responsible and predictable in his behaviour.
I think you are in cocaine....
@@robertnett9793 Putin is also quite a big celebrity in the eastern world, in spíte of what's known of him. Lots of Slavs, some Kazakhs and others I met from Russia's sphere of influence except for one woman, tell me about how he's brought pride among the former satellites. Something I don't understand at all, maybe in the former Yugoslavia, but how can Estonians feel pride?.
@@larrote6467 It's always interesting, that one thinks to know how other nations and cultures tick.
But beneath the visible things is a huge layer of hidden details about how people think act and feel.
I would lie if I said I know for what reasons former soviet states feel pride for Putin.
I'd think it was for him being a counterweight to the European influence (think of it as 'rather the evil we know than an uncertain one' very broadly spoken).
That and Putin has undeniable charisma and his public image seems to resonate with a lot of people.
I only watch this from afar without any special knowledge about the situation and I don't claim to be right in any way here - that's only as it seems to me.
@@robertnett9793 my only conclusion is that they are so dissapointed in their own states, that they look to the geopolitical powerhouse. That happens here in Mexico, lots of mexicans look up to the US while being apathetic to our own creations, we even have a word for it.
The difference between the Civil War and now, is that at least during the Civil War if you told someone from the Confederacy that something didn't happen they'd believe you, because people still thought facts were a thing.
Not true confederates convinced themselves they were fighting for people's rights even though it was the right to strip another of human equivalency. Don't legitimize monsters.
