- This is a recording of the Republic XF-84H "Thunderscreech, a turboprop plane with a supersonic propeller. This sound (when played at its original volume) caused people to faint, vomit, become slightly deaf , and reputedly soil themselves. Enjoy!!
Not only were the blade tips producing sonic booms constantly, the shock waves bouncing off the ground whilt it idled produced subsonic waves that did everything from inducing nausea to cracking glass and concrete.
6000 horsepower Allison XT40-A-1 I believe was used. I feel bad for the pilot he had to sit in that noisemaker and fly that thing
I've read that the pilot didn't actually have it as bad as the ground crew. Due to the supersonic propellars, the sonic waved were shot more outwards than at the pilot or something like that.
@@spicketspaghet7773 "As long as you stood ahead of or behind the airplane,” says Beaird, now 78 and flying Learjets, “it really wasn’t so bad, but if you got in the plane of the prop, it’d knock you down.” Really? “Really.”
@@Rutherford_Inchworm_III My grandfather was a cropduster and flew an Ayers Thrush Commander with a 600 hp radial that had a two-blade prop. It was awfully loud, even when taxiing. However, if you were standing behind it, you could barely hear it (you’d get a very good breeze though lol).
Gave a ground crew chief (I think) a seizure because of the pressure changes.
This would be terrifying at low altitude
massive in CAS, just a flyby might knock enemy temporarily out.
the american stuka but without the siren, just the sound of the propeller

Considering the airplane flew less than 7 hours before being grounded forever, and that the first person to fly it refused to ever fly it again, saying "You're not big enough and there aren't enough of you to get me inside that cockpit." flying it again seems like a bad idea.

Not only did it make the ground crew sick, it supposedly made the pilot ill as well. So it probably couldn't use it as a weapon unless they trained a deaf pilot.
Or very very good noise cancelling headphones
blaster1 112 Sound waves would still effect the pilots body.
It induced a seizure in a crew cheif.
Or implement the engine to a UAV.
Deafness wouldnt stop the soundwaves from making him sick.
Have you ever been at a loud concert?
Have you ever felt incredible.high db sound rattle your ribcage, and make your stomach tingle?
All of you who've been to concerts, especially small venues where you're right by the speakers and subs, you all know what I'm talking about.
The pilot and ground crew experienced that sensation x100. THATS what made them sick.
Oh, how awesome it would be to have a proper sound/video of this machine. I believe only one remains in existence, and not even that one is in flyable condition, but the story goes that they were not very easy to fly, either. I still wonder how the sound of it alone could cause illness and seizures (among many other things).
I heard the plane could be heard from 30 miles away lol
The propellers emitted somewhere around 900 sonic booms a minute.
900 sonic booms per minute = 15 booms per second.
Using modern simulation software (finite element analysis), it is possible to synthesize sound from the harmonic vibrations of individual components of a model). Watch those videos of Kilowatt sub-woofer systems. They can make car windows shake and hair blow around.
If you ever happen to take a trip to Russia go see their bombers, the noise they produce has been described as skull crushing and able to drown out the turbines on jets
"You aren't big enough and there aren't enough of you to get me in that thing again"
Lin Hendrix (Test Pilot) flew it once and refused to ever fly it again.
And when a 1950s test pilot says that about a plane, that's when you KNOW it's a deathtrap
8 years and is still recommended to me. Great Job RUclips
Anyone here after watching the Dark Skies vid that didn't actually have the sound sample included?
Incredible noise, you can pretty much hear it trying to tear itself apart. Can't even imagine what it must have been like in the cockpit.
Was just discussing this plane with other '50s aircraft fans. Thanks for posting.
You know, if they'd made this into a remote piloted bomb or cruise missile . . . they could've really disrupted enemy readiness by just flying up and down the FLOT (Forward Line of Troops) at a hundred feet altitude. Sure, these disruptive missiles would get shot down, a few each day, (and we'd keep 'em coming, sending more out at night) but the wrecks would land on enemy positions with their intended task accomplished. The horrendous noise would keep the enemy awake, discombobulated, ruin his appetite, and make him hate his leaders for putting him underneath the hellish USAF device.
William Cox It would be a waste of needed resources.
William Cox Awesome idea though
The USAF had an even more wacky idea. Check out the Supersonic Low Altitude Missile. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supersonic_Low_Altitude_Missile
You get all of my interwebnets points today plus one chocolate biscuit for getting "discombobulated" into a comment thread. It's a fantastic word, isn't it?

orcustrex would've been our equivalent of the Stuka siren
For it to break in the middle of the mission? Not really a good idea for the pilot !
The actual performance of the aircraft was quite poor however.
my thoughts exactly. but using it would be a different story altogether. i think the most you could do with it is fly it over an enemy city low enough to shatter windows and put a few cracks in the walls. that alone may not sound like it'd be doing much but after awhile it'd bug the shit out of your enemy
I wish they would flight this plane one more time for a HD audio recording.
Probably one of the creepiest planes in history.
I can't even lie, the sound of that was that fucking terrifying, I could only imagine hearing it in person, or even flying the damn thing, it has so much torque it constantly wants to throw you into a barrel roll
The way the sound swells up made my neck tense up and thicken. If that thing would be at full volume, I’d have chucked up my breakfast
It just sounds like wind though ?
This recording is bad and has No Description or entailing what it’s doing Either flying by or Just Starting Up !?
They say no recording could truly capture the sound of the Thunderscreech, because the it wasn't the level of noise you could hear, but the level of noise that made you internal organs vibrate as if trying to violently escape from your rib cage
The aircraft wouldn't need weaponry, just fly low altitude and the shockwave would rip you apart 😂
I am an ark lore nerd but i learned so much here. To say this is perfect is an understatement
Its the perfect sound for a terrifying movie.
Could you imagine how terrifying this would be if you heard a squadron of these things flying over in the middle of a war?

Not only that, but it must have been deafening and terrible for the test pilot, who is right behind this killer of eardrums
Thanks a lot for posting this! I've been trying to find some archive footage or a sound recording for ages and then someone puts one on RUclips.
I particular like the fact they could only persuade one company to make them the test propellers, I suspect the engineers at other companies simply couldn't stop laughing when they saw the design brief!

I don't know why I never thought of this before but flying several of these at night over enemy territory would bean incredible psychological terror weapon.
I've seen the XF-84H a few times at the US Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio where it's on display. Apparently, it created quite a din when it ran but I wonder how it compares, decible-wise, with the Tu-95 Bear? Although the Bear's props are subsonic, they are huge (about 18 feet) and counter-rotate.
The TU-95 is definitely nowhere near as loud as the XF-84. The XF-84 is literally louder than anything you will hear today that has an afterburner so if you think those jets are loud as hell, be as this doesn’t fly anymore or else air shows would never be the same. The TU-95 is barely even louder than a T-6 which also has a supersonic prop but that is about as loud as a CF-18 hornet in full afterburner
@@SirensAndAlarmsOfNorthernIL The only thing remotely close to an XF-84 is probably a shuttle
Imagine being engaged and this is the show of force the air force sends
For context, this recording was made as the aircraft passed at 30,000ft. overhead, at a distance of 12 miles.
This is not the actual sound, someone made this with their synth.
Low bit rate and signal saturation means even the real thing would sound like this.
Obviously someone doesn't know what a turbo prop sounds like
How you know?
However, today it must be possible of reconstruct the kind of sound and simulate how it sounded from different angles etc
The blades were going over Mach 1, it’s not that hard to imagine this is what it sounded like.
The first thirty seconds of this one sounds more realistic. ruclips.net/video/46oSEQocTsQ/видео.html
"Can you tun it up a bit, please? I'm a '60s lead guitarist and my band was louder than this plane. They called us the 'who?' because all our fans were deaf."

Imagine hearing a whole squadron of these just coming towards you
imagine a plane so loud that earplugs are completely ineffective when it comes to cancelling out the noise. kind of terrifying
Not just that. Even double hearing protection won’t do shit bc you would just get battered by the shockwaves if you stand facing the side of the prop. Heck, you would be fine wearing earplugs standing next to a jet going full afterburner but if you stood near this at full throttle at about 100 feet, the noise would most likely kill you
It was loud enough to kill people. The shock waves would dig chunks out of the pavement.

"Heyyyy, so uhm.. how was your test flight like?"
*_"WHAT"_*
The propeller blades are moving at supersonic speeds. Apparently this occurred even when the plane was idling on the ground, causing injuries to ground crews.
I wonder who made this, first started it up, and was like, "yeah, this is a good idea, lets keep testing it".
I've read somewhere that the Thunderscreech was grounded after the propellor damaged the computers in the control tower!
It would be a nightmare for logistics in war to have your ground crews throwing their guts up on the tarmac after a flight of Thunderscreechs took off on a sortie!
Reminder, this was recorded at ground level. The plane was at cruising altitude
B-1b 'Lancer': "I am the SOUND OF FREEDOM!"
XF-84H 'Thunderscreech': "I am the sound of Liberation!"
B-1b: "That's cute. What are you liberating?"

You can always tell an xf-84 pilot. You just can’t tell them much

This is more a weapon of terror then an actual weapon of
just for refrence, this plane emitted around 900 sonic booms per minute since the propeller tips would go supersonic. ground crew wearing earplugs would suffer malaise and nausea if they were anywhere near the plane during taxi and takeoff.
Wait its not per minute.....14000rpm / 60seconds * 3propeller blades = 700 sonic booms per SECOND! yikes!
The single most terrifyingly awful sound any aircaft has ever made including the JU-88.
Fun fact, this is not really the sound of it, this is the only sound speakers picked up from it, it was so god damn loud it was creating one continuous sonic boom with its propeller, so the microphones couldn’t detect the sound of it. It was also destroying them in the process
Put this sound on a radio, put the volume WAY UP, and then expeirence the pain, faint, vomit, deafness, and other stuff yourself!!!!
Reminds me of the Junkers Ju-88 Stuka, with the sound that it makes when dive bombing, except for the fact that this thing doesn't need to dive bomb to make people literally shit themselves.

If they flew those 24/7 over Vietnam the outcome of war would be different... because the sound is so loud it incapacitated ground crews for over 30 minutes...
Imagine hearing this at the middle of the night I would shit my pants
Imagine if the US brought this concept back to use in warfare, and brought their most hard-of-hearing people in to just deafen enemies by flying this monstrosity over their heads. If you could suffer hearing damage from 30 miles away, it would be a knockout for any wartime morale destroyer
If they used this thing as a suicide drone or cruise missile it might've have a formidable effect on enemy morale.
The sound also had some detrimental effects on people exposed to it. One ground crewmember had a seizure, a few others vomited.
Although, the side effects of exposure might make using that sound as a weapon a war crime.
It sounds like something that was sampled and shifted to make the Dragonball Power Up sound.
Time keeps on slippin.....into the future 🤯🤣

It was very difficult and dangerous to fly, not just insanely loud.
"WHO THE FUCK EVEN GREENLIT THAT ABOMINATION?!"
"WHAT?!"
"WHAT?!"
id actually have been scared if this thing flew over my house xD
during ground manuvers like taxi-ing, start up, or full power run ups they said it so noisey that it made people sick so i see noise as just 1 of the reason this project was scrapped. the speed of sound is around 670-730mph if im not mistaken, and if the prop blades broke the mach 1 barrier while on low power, how fast would they be movin when the engine is at full throttle
Damn that sounds scary. I'm surprised this plane was louder than a fighter jet in afterburner. Was this the only sound recording of it? And was this on the ramp or flying?
Duderocks5539 well the reason it’s louder is due to the fact that different areas of a propeller were breaking the sound barrier multiple times a second. It’s really technical and takes a long time to explain, but this plane is driven by a turbine engine coupled to a supersonic propeller.
