  • This is a recording of the Republic XF-84H "Thunderscreech, a turboprop plane with a supersonic propeller. This sound (when played at its original volume) caused people to faint, vomit, become slightly deaf , and reputedly soil themselves. Enjoy!!

The story I heard is that the pilot made an emergency landing at Bakersfield and the Air Force never retrieved the aircraft. It wsas mounted on a pylon in front of the Meadows Field air terminal. In 1992 The Air Force took it back and put it in the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force since it is the only one in the world.

    Was just discussing this plane with other '50s aircraft fans. Thanks for posting.
    You know, if they'd made this into a remote piloted bomb or cruise missile . . . they could've really disrupted enemy readiness by just flying up and down the FLOT (Forward Line of Troops) at a hundred feet altitude. Sure, these disruptive missiles would get shot down, a few each day, (and we'd keep 'em coming, sending more out at night) but the wrecks would land on enemy positions with their intended task accomplished. The horrendous noise would keep the enemy awake, discombobulated, ruin his appetite, and make him hate his leaders for putting him underneath the hellish USAF device.

      The TU-95 is definitely nowhere near as loud as the XF-84. The XF-84 is literally louder than anything you will hear today that has an afterburner so if you think those jets are loud as hell, be as this doesn’t fly anymore or else air shows would never be the same. The TU-95 is barely even louder than a T-6 which also has a supersonic prop but that is about as loud as a CF-18 hornet in full afterburner

Heck, you would be fine wearing earplugs standing next to a jet going full afterburner but if you stood near this at full throttle at about 100 feet, the noise would most likely kill you

      It has little to do with the ears , when the props go supersonic its a resonance , it is high frequency vibration that shakes your organs, si even a deaf person would get sick of thunderscreech, i wonder how the pilot felt that flew this as this resonance must be felt through the whole plane

    • @prodigy-hu6dy
      @prodigy-hu6dy 5 лет назад +10

      Duderocks5539 well the reason it’s louder is due to the fact that different areas of a propeller were breaking the sound barrier multiple times a second. It’s really technical and takes a long time to explain, but this plane is driven by a turbine engine coupled to a supersonic propeller.

    +Derek Wall - And what would be the benefit of the prop spinning faster?

    • @keithm5378
      @keithm5378 10 лет назад

      Okay,i'm not a physics expert,but there is one potential use for an even faster prop. If the US Military wanted to use something like this in the form of modern UAV as an acoustic weapon, if the blades had a higher RPM,it would(in theory) cause more area of the propeller blades to become supersonic and therefore possibly become even louder and even more excruciatingly painful to the people its used against than the original XF-84h.
      Granted in order to prevent it from literally destroying peoples eardrums,windows and everything around it, The throttle would have to be able to drop the propeller below supersonic speeds during takeoff then be able to run it up to a higher mach when in the air. Just my .02

    • @kkandkats
      @kkandkats 10 лет назад +1

      More speed = more air being handled in the same time = more speed. (And a lot more fuel, consumption of which goes up as the square of the speed...)

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 10 лет назад +1

      Keith M I don't really think this would be of any use as an acoustic weapon. Sonic boom intensity at a distance is very much dependent on object size, and even a large propeller is small compared to any airplane so you'd have a weaker boom than the usual fighter. Besides, the (single) boom would happen only once, as the airplane passed more or less overhead. It would have to turn around and return to deploy subsequent booms, by which time anti-air artillery would surely be pointing at it.

    • @keithm5378
      @keithm5378 10 лет назад

      This is true,however here is the catch. There is not just one sonic boom, but multiple booms per second due to the propeller blades,not the aircraft, moving above the speed of sound(Mach 1.18 or 901 MPH) generating a sonic boom with each propeller turn,this is why the XF-84h had such an incredible noise level and could be heard from 22 miles away according to one of the members of the ground crew who said he could hear it from his home. He also noted that when the aircraft was run up to full power,it was even louder. One could only imagine the levels of pain endured by anyone within a few hundred yards at full power.
      My theory was that if the aircraft was low enough(around five to six hundred feet perhaps), the rapid shock wave sonic booms and the incredibly painful and damaging noise level could act on enemy personnel below causing nausea,pain,seizures and absolute demoralization not unlike what the ground crew experienced. And if the prop were to spin even faster, the noise levels would be increased due to more area of the propeller blades becoming supersonic and could become not only painful,but damaging. The Human eardrum can burst at the 160-165dB level.
      How could this be used as a weapon? simple. AC-130 Gunship crews are known to fly around in a circle above the enemy target to continue firing on the position, if an experienced pilot flying a modernized XF-84 type UAV with a supersonic prop could do the same thing, it could be fairly easy to not only demoralize enemies with the unbearable noise, but also interfere with communications among the enemy causing confusion and panic. Meanwhile friendly personnel can eliminate the now disoriented enemies. It's like having a gigantic automatic stun grenade in the sky.
      The problem is that it can also disorient friendly personnel as sound doesn't discriminate between friend or foe and it was regarded by the flight crews that earplugs "made no difference" with the XF-84h and as you said, the massive radar signature of the aircraft would make it an easy target for anti- aircraft weaponry. The idea isn't perfect but again it was just that,an idea.
      Once again,i do not to claim to be an expert on Physics,but from what i know and have seen from this interesting aircraft, that was my theory. Do i think it would work? with some tweaking perhaps. Do i believe the US would adopt such a weapon? No. My two cents.

    • @coriscotupi
      @coriscotupi 10 лет назад +1

      I believe the flaw is in the small size of the propeller. I don't think it is large enough to make a huge impact on people on the ground. You see, there *are* propellers that can run with their tips at supersonic speeds (Cessna 210 and others) and their noise is annoying to be sure, but not more than that. Since the intensity of the sonic boom is a function of the size of the object as well as distance, I don't see a propeller being a useful "stun" weapon. Interesting stuff, though, and good discussion!
