As far as I know for top gun Maverick they did not have access to f-14s, because the only f14 is left in the world were not capable of flying. Although that is no excuse for the the sound that they had in the movie as there are other ways to get the correct sound
So I remember i was playing VTOL VR using the Vulcan in a dogfight I had 22 rounds left fired that last burst and it was gone in less than a second but I did get the gut
The RWR special threat indicator and the missile launch alert on that second missile mixed with the constant radar lock warning *really* fucked with my DCS stress lmao good stuff man
God, now _that's_ the stuff. You know what had more accurate gun sounds than Top Gun? _The Final Countdown,_ a schlocky time travel film from the early 80s, because they used actual footage and audio of the F-14 firing its gun.
This is how the scene *should* have sounded. As an aviation Nerd, the real sfx made the scene so much better, not just the cannon sounds, but the Sidewinder tone, and various alarms as well. Thank you for making this!
I agree with the gun sounds and Sidewinder tone, but I think the movie makers made the right choice to not include any warning sounds because it distracts from the action and dialogue. They even provided a plausible explanation for why there are no warning sounds with that popped circuit breaker. Once Rooster resets it later we start hearing the RWR.
I agree with the gun sounds, but the lack of a Sidewinder growl in the actual movie may very well be a continuity thing, since there was no Sidewinder growl in the first movie either.
Man every additional sound just ramped up the tension right up to the warning tones in Russian tell in the pilot of system failures! Magnificent! *chefs kiss*
Now this brought a new level of realism to the scene. Especially the "growling" sidewinder lock - it really emphasized an ancient tomcat vs the sleekest of the sleek Su-57. Nice job.
I appreciate that, on top of fixing the gun sounds, you added other sounds like the missile warnings, various beeps and boops, and the classic AIM-9 growl
@@lukeslanding2230 On the F-14, the one Maverick is flying is the initial A-model that used the TF-30 engines originally used for the F-111 Aardvark. They had a notorious reputation when mated with the F-14 to compressor stall if you were too aggressive on throttle inputs, which led to multiple losses due to engine failure. Later B and D model Tomcats would replace the TF-30 with General Electric's F-110, but the majority of the F-14 fleet by its retirement in 2006 were still A-models with those initial TF-30 engines.
Random fun fact: when the F-14 fired it’s first missile, the shot and frame is merely identical to how the original film shot all the missiles firing scenes.
Which still won’t explain why the Sidewinder dropped off the rail as it launched. Before the F-22 and F-35 all AIM-9s used, get ready for this, _rails_ for mounting on the aircraft. That means when the motor ignites the missile accelerates straight down the rail till both mounting tabs are clear. It does not fall away from the aircraft and then ignite. Though that would have been correct for Sparrow or Phoenix launches. Just not Sidewinder.
I thought that was the actual clip from the original. That looked like how I remember the missiles firing in the first one. Seemed like the same clips used each time they zoomed in on Maverick firing missiles and guns as well.
It's defintely a fun addition for people who know the sounds. I don't think any of the RWR stuff was active until Rooster turnedon all the fuses when they went over the ocean (The TID and radio come online too).
Well technically, if we want to be even nitpickier, the RWR and radar should already be on because apparently only the radio was turned off according to their dialogue AND Rooster only pulled one circuit breaker which wouldn't turn on all 3 systems.
This is my retort to anyone saying the breaker wasn't inserted for the RWR and FCS. Like I don't fucking care. This is so much better. Take out that useless scene with rooster having trouble with the radar and there's no contradiction and the flight sequence is instantly better.
Great sound design, I would add hard buffeting like a flag flapping in the wind when the fighter pulled that super maneuverable controlled stall . The amount of air hitting the plane at that aoa would definitely be loud. combine it with Doppler shift and a fast fade as the plane bleeds that crap ton of energy should sound quite impressive. Emphasizing build up of the afterburner sound in the silence of him free falling for him to have to recover and catch back up to the tomcat. Just my 2 cents
Loved the compressor stall alarm when Maverick "split the throttles". 🤣I remember sort of giggling to myself in the theater and thinking "Welp, there's a flame out." Also love the addition of all the extra RWR tones you added in. I remember being surprised that they added in ANY of the F-14 RWR sounds at all, there's a couple bits where you can hear them in this scene in the movie. F-14A engines were notorious for compressor stalls when making rapid throttle position changes like that, especially in high alpha regimes. Definitely a very "Top Gun" move, just like "hitting the brakes, he'll fly right by." I can look past it because the movie is loaded with charm, just like the first one.
@@sen_ex so the guy is talking about the split throttle maneuver which is absolutely a real thing however he is 100 percent correct that going one full burner one to idle immediately is gonna cause a compressor stall. Which is where the engine will go kaput at least temporarily and probably cause a flat spin. What the actual maneuver is is you have one engine on full burner the other you bring to mil power aka full power without afterburner to get that extra roll capability
From my VERY limited experience flying in an F-18D. It’s surprisingly quiet and smooth inside. Especially the faster you go. The only way I knew we came out of AB was the force it exerts on the A/C. There was no audible sound difference. That may have just been because we were supersonic when we came out of AB though. The whole time I was up, at least as far as noises and feeling go, it wasn’t anything like I thought it would be. I have turned A/C hundreds of times in my naval career. From the perspective of the pilot in the cockpit, they are significantly louder on the ground than when they are airborne.
For the RWR sounds, I think it actually made sense for them to not make any sounds initially as the CB was pulled out, and then wasn't pushed in until they fought the third guy, and that's when you correctly hear the RWR tone at that time
Actually no, even at closer ranges the radar on the offensive jet will lock the defender to get a gun solution. So even if they only fire heatseekers, they will nontheless lock you up. In modern air superiority fighters it's as easy as pressing one button to automatically establish a dogfight radar mode in which it'll only scan a small portion ahead, since the target it most likely 1< nautical mile distant
@@default2907Yeah I brought this exact point up in another comment reply and someone was arguing with me that the heater launch would still trigger a missile launched tone, lol. Like no, it won't because they're passive.
What I loved about that moment is that we're shown some insane stuff from the Black pilot as well. To the point that even Maverick is absolutely impressed at 00:48. It's not just a "evil guy in an evil plane" setup, they were matched in skill almost equally, one had more resolve and a tad more luck with the rounds, basically.
@@Napsoundz Doesn't really matter to bring home the point that this is an enemy to be reckoned with. He goes into a flat spin, willingly, because he knows he can recover from it. Going into a flat spin basically means you HAVE to eject. While it's possible to get out of it again, this is no situation any pilot would go into willingly under any circumstances, while our enemy pilot here shows that he can, and will, employ this maneuver.
Unfortunately for him, in actual combat that maneuver, presenting his largest aspect motionless to the enemy, probably would have immediately gotten him killed. Maverick could've gotten his gun kill right then.
That's what I miss from the original. The original had a ton of shots from helicopters from a distance so you could actually see the physics behind every roll. I feel this movie had too much cockpit footage to show the effects on the pilots instead of the effects on the aircraft.
@@aidanmonaghan2539 That's fair. I guess they wanted to emphasize more on the actors actually doing the scenes rather than the aircraft flying by which people would label and assume: ItS jUSt cGi.
This movie changed my perception on fighter jet planes, this video made me appreciate film editor nerds out there. That vulcan gun sounds 100% better using its real life sounds.
You did a phenomenal job with the sound effects and using the proper ones, even changing how the cannon sounded if the shot in the movie was inside of the cockpit or outside. This significantly improved my enjoyment of the movie and I wish it would be re-released with your sound editing.
I did the same thing! I'd never thought of it before seeing this, but the sounds are way off. This edit made it way more engaging. For once the YT algorithm has sent me a video that truly enriches my life!
it was for authenticity and immersion reasons. The producer didn't want to overload our senses with excitement or heavy stimulation, he just wanted us to know something that's real, which was the gunshots.
Me too!! I loved the engagements in the movie but I remember how I felt when Maverick made the first gun kill on the SU-57 and I thought I heard a 50 caliber machine gun instead of an M61 20 mm rotary autocannon
Same. My biggest contention with this and all movies who make Gatling guns sound like 50 cal chain guns was fixed. I wish I could incorporate this into my copy of the movie.
Outstanding! The gatling gun sounds way more menacing and believable. Also, even though the F14 shouldn't detect the missiles, the panic and chaos inside the cabin build even further the tension of the scene. Nice job!
Excellent work on this video the sound effects for this dogfight we're pretty much my only complaint with the movie and you pretty much fix my complaints. Fury might not have been the most historically convergent movie, but damn it had this high of a level for its sound design. I really set my expectations way too high for Maverick...
Nicholas Moran (The Chieftain) Did say it did at least get the feeling of being a member of a U.S. Tank crewman during the war. And I thought they would’ve used a real M-61 Vulcan sound effect instead of making the F-14s main gun sound like an Uzi.
I personally think the most important thing when making a movie about any true historical war should be done accurately. Sound design can be great but making war look like Hollywood sucks.
I've waited almost a year for someone to perfect this scene! Thank you so much!!! There's absolutely no reason why the vulcan cannon sound wasn't in the original film. Non-avgeeks would still love this sound. It sounds so much cooler than a dumb 50 cal.
It's not that they didn't bother. These sounds, while accurate, completely ruin the scene and asthetic. Videos likese these are cool for enthusiasts, but Maverick is a piece of art, not a documentary. Even if they did it as a mistake, it's just the better choice and movie is better off as it is.
Yeah, typically guns go ratatatatatatata, because most people are hearing something like an M60. Very few films show Gatling guns or high cyclic rate autocannons with their real sound effects, because people would be confused by the sheer rate of fire merging all sounds into a ripping effect.
@Syntex366 Yeah but at this point this is just a director's dillema. Cars physically can't blow up even if you shoot directly at them, but if you don't have a car explode even just a little after being light up, audience are gonna think you're wrong. So all cars in cinema explode and at this point no one can really do anything about it.
@@qactus4031 How does the deep powerful growl of the classic tomcat cannons ruin the scene? Or the blaring missile alerts that add tension? We've already seen Cruise go through the effort of having authentic piloting where G-force is a part of the plot and stakes. Plus, an audience that does care about aviation would love it, and an audience that doesn't care will still hear something powerful and bassy, and likely understand what air combat sounds like. (I know I personally got into air combat through arcade games like Ace Combat 6, which had an exaggerated conflict with unrealistic physics, but had realistic sound design with their weapons and how long distance explosions took a moment to reach you. And now instead of being caught off guard by things like how an A10 gun sounds in videos or long distance explosions I can appreciate how certain media, in a way teaches about this interesting form of action.
Goddamn the F-14 missile warning tone just immediately causes my heartrate to spike. On one hand movie sound-folie people really need to use the real-life sounds, on the other hand I can see a very 'Saving Private Ryan'-type argument where you don't want to traumatize all the former pilots watching the movie lmao.
Huh. The second you hear a real sidewinder you can never un-hear it. They're basically alive, the way they sound. They don't just jump to a tone like that. They warble exactly what they're thinking and feeling.
Sidewinders always remind me of a grumpy teenager refusing to get out of bed until you manage to motivate them with a target lock and then they get hype
The three Sidewinder tone stages: 1 - seeking (slower, lower pitch “growl”) 2 - target spotted (faster, slightly higher pitch “growl”) 3 - LET ME AT ‘EM (single high pitch tone)
Everyone’s talking about the m61 sound and aim 9 sound, etc, but I’m also impressed with the improved gsh 301 sound. In the original, the sound for the rate of fire was almost there, but it lacked the deep tone of a true 30mm cannon firing, the sound used in this version packed more of a punch and used a deeper tone, which went along with the weapon’s caliber
I think the reason they use the sounds they do is because only a small portion of the bullets that the gun fires are tracer rounds, that make those paths of light, but the gun sounds they use are in rhythm with the tracer rounds, so for people who don't know how many bullets are actually being fired, it makes sense in their head.
One of the things I love about this scene is we are getting to see things Maverick likely learned during his time at Top Gun in the F-14. It’s almost like he, his instructors (Viper and Jester), and fellow F-14 pilots are all shining in this scene. Everything they taught him helped him survive and showcase how elite training will give you a chance.
Whoa THIS made a huge difference. The cockpit sounds are totally needed in the original. The gun sounds have so much more depth now, you can hear the power.
AMAZING!! I would seriously pay, or would make an unrelated "donation/gift" if I could get the whole movie with these kinds of sound edits. Maybe with a little more "engine sounds and air rumble" in the cockpit in the final product and perhaps adding some other minor aircraft sound tweaks I am unaware of but an expert would know about, as other commenters suggested. But still EXCELLENT work even with simple the change of weapon sounds and the addition of warning/lock tones! This alone makes it so much more enjoyable to watch!

Yes yes yes! From the growl of the heater to the roar of the vulcan, just so much better. RWR, etc. Just so much better. Not sure if you messed with external sounds at all, but thank you for this cut.
So my only criticism would be that at this time, the radar in the Tomcat wasn’t turned on; Rooster hadn’t yet found the correct breaker, and so Mav and Rooster wouldn’t be hearing the audibles. Other than that, absolutely amazing job.
Isn't the RWR a separate system? Same with the sidewinders, you'd hear the growl from the seeker head and see the symbology on the HUD, but it doesn't use the AWG-9.
@@jacklegg21 admittedly, I wouldn’t know. I am not a subject matter expert, I just understood from the scene that most of the avionics were not working at that time. As someone else explained in a different comment under this video, that is why Maverick told Rooster to let him know when he saw “smoke in the air”, as that implied that the audible warning was not operative
@@Tavers2 IR missiles don't give a radar warning. Only active radar missiles or semi-active radar missiles that have gone active will give a warning tone. With IR missiles you either need an advanced launch detection system that the tomcat doesnt have or you have to watch for missile trails and deploy countermeasures at the appropriate time.
The RWR is definitely a separate system. We wouldn't hear the missile launch warning (high frequency beeping) but we would definitely hear the radar lock warning (slower beeping) as well as the compressor stall warning. The AIM-9 missile tone comes from the missile itself, so as long as Mav (not Rooster) remembered to turn on the seeker coolant at any point in the flight, it'd be ready to go. There are no audibles associated with the AWG-9 radar itself.
Wait, you’re telling me an F14 wouldn’t actually be able to fight a 5th-gen fighter? No way, next you’re gonna tell me this was just a movie and not a documentary…
Yeah that really bugged me. What Maverick should've said is "We gotta get low! The terrain will *_block_* his missiles!" And then show the Felon firing its fox-2 only to hit the side of a cliff or a mountain. So it switches to its guns like normal.
@@tsmitty777 it looks like a really low cloud that the Felon flew through. Even Mav and Rooster flew through it a few seconds before. But it would've been much cooler *and more plausible and believable* if it was an explosion from a missile that Mav blocked using terrain maneuvering.
Man the gun sounds alone make this so much better. Also, I’d agree on your use of RWR. This is separate to actual radar and radio, and the idea of the F14 going low to confuse the sensors is referring to the use of ground clutter to throw off radar locks. Those SU57’s were originally flying high and probably loaded for BVR engagements to maintain a stand off distance in case anyone flew into the AO, hence the use of R77-1’s, and not Fox 2’s for dogfights. I wouldn’t load up an aircraft with Fox 2’s when my AO is jam packed with friendly SAM’s. I’m sure it’s easier to switch on the RWR in the F14 than the whole radar system (I’m guessing here as I know it’s easy in the F15, 16 & 18, but I’ve not looked at the F14’s system before) so your choice on adding RWR effects makes perfect sense. It’s also worth adding that the growling sidewinder tone is so much better than the lame beeping noise the movie insists on! Shame the F14’s hud symbology wasn’t quite right. I loved this movie, and this scene. Your additions really add to it, nice work!

You mean nearly identical. Merely means only.
That's because it was the same shot
They were all filmed in the 80’s.

Well if you go from burner to mil it’s not as bad that is what pilots do irl
Can you explain why what he did was unrealistic? Don't know much about fighter jets.
Now it just needs more realistic engine sounds and air rumble in the cockpit.

The whole time I was up, at least as far as noises and feeling go, it wasn’t anything like I thought it would be. I have turned A/C hundreds of times in my naval career. From the perspective of the pilot in the cockpit, they are significantly louder on the ground than when they are airborne.

For the RWR sounds, I think it actually made sense for them to not make any sounds initially as the CB was pulled out, and then wasn't pushed in until they fought the third guy, and that's when you correctly hear the RWR tone at that time
And in close range they wouldn’t be using radar guided missiles so the rwd wouldn’t even know they were being locked but still a great edit
@@default2907 Yes

Not really, if you remember the movie the black pilot was in a very superior aircraft.

The guns in the movie are balanced with the overall sound design. The authentic ones are more jarring and regular audiences won't care
@@qactus4031 How does the deep powerful growl of the classic tomcat cannons ruin the scene? Or the blaring missile alerts that add tension?

I feel like the "lame beeping noise" was an homage to the original Top Gun. They didn't use accurate search/lock sounds either.

This is perfection… jaw dropping experience. Thanks a million, the adrenaline is doubled by the veracity of the sounds
aim 9 locking on is the most satisfying sound ever
Honestly the funny thing is is that the more realistic gun sounds and The Sidewinder growl sound way meaner and cinematic than the sounds they use.
As someone who didn't know any real sounds when I watched the movie I already thought it sounded pretty good, but this is just so much better. And done with movie-level editing too!
It does keep surprising me how they both absolutely destroy any speed they have, yet end up on the tail of the other aircraft with just as much speed.
