I use this technique, but differently. I am the one who feels I may miss something important by deleting mass quantities at once, so I use the process of elimination method. I use the search bar for marketing tag words like "limited time" "one day only" "free with" "ends soon" "last chance", select THOSE mass quantities of emails, and delete! Then I go for sender names; topics and titles if emails I have intentionally signed up for to read in my leisure, but they have gotten out of control. I select all of THOSE emails, unclick the ones sent in the last month or 2 so I might can read them, then delete again. After I have cleared those selected seaches from my inbox, my inbox folder reaches a much more manageable amount of inventory, and I feel much safer in my deleting process from my main inbox, less anxious, and much more intentional about my decluttering process! -Happy Holidays! -Loren

Create a separate email address that is only used for registering things or when you are at a store and they ask for your email address. You won’t ever have to check it because you know it’s all “Junk Mail”. Anyone/anything important, give your regular email address that goes to your Inbox. Saves a lot of time.

I hate to have unread emails in my mailbox. I read and clean out my inbox daily. This is one area I give myself a gold star in. To avoid too many emails I tend to always unsubscribe from businesses I don't frequent often. Also when I go to a store and they ask for my email I just politely say no thanks.

Riverside Acres what is your daily routine for staying on top of email? When do you tackle it? Home? Office? How long it take you? Do you have to manage it more than once a day? I’d like to get a handle on this too. Anything that you can share would be appreciated! Even something I haven’t thought of asking. Thank you!

Belinda H I have all my email come to my phone. I tackle it throughout the day whenever I have a spare minute. You'd be amazed at how many emails you can go through while in the bathroom or waiting for the water to boil at dinner. Just a few here and there and you'll get it. Also unsubscribe from anything unimportant!!

I did do this- well sort of - a couple years ago! All the emails in my inbox just disappeared! I had a few moments of panic and then realized I had a perfectly good excuse if something important wasn't responded to! My husband offered to help and try to recover my emails and I said no because it was actually a huge relief not to have such a big number looking back at me. After that point I decided not to let it get built up again and while every once in a while I have to go through and do some unsubscribing I daily go in and delete everything that isn't a personal email and doesn't have a subject line that makes me really want to read it. This keeps my inbox nice and manageable. I do have a folder called "Keep for a Time" where I put emails that I need to keep temporarily. This has been really useful and I just go through it every once in a while and clean out things that are out of date!

If you're too scared to delete, simply archive the whole mess. Those archived emails will still show up in a search, so nothing is really lost, but you can still start fresh. Then make a point to get to inbox zero every week -- pick a time (mine is Sunday evening after dinner) to deal with any lingering emails and start the next day stress free.

Just a few days ago, I checked my inbox to see that I had 800+ unread emails 😱 I began searching by group so I could quickly scan and delete all of the unimportant ones. This also gave me a chance to unsubscribe to the ones clogging up my inbox. I now have less than 200 unread emails, and I plan to tackle the read emails after I finish the unread emails. I use my inbox like a "To Do" list. It only stays there if it's something that needs to be done. Everything else gets deleted or filed (archived) each time email is accessed. I have folders for receipts and other important information. Unsubscribe immediately from any unwanted email and delete. Add contacts immediately for addresses you want to keep, then delete the email. Once I have dealt with each email, it immediately leaves the inbox. Like checking off a to do list! Love this video. Digital clutter is just as debilitating as physical clutter. And sometimes much harder to address. Not sure why, but it is. 😊

  • @momamel2
    @momamel2 4 года назад +35

My best advice is to create a “rule” for the emails that may have coupons to stores you frequent. You can do this once you’ve opened an email to a particular store. Find the three dots (near the top right) scroll down to “create rule” then select a folder to save the email to or add a new folder. I started a “Coupon” folder. Once you’ve selected the folder, click OK then check the box Run this rule now in Inbox. All the emails in your inbox from that sender will automatically go directly to that folder.

    • @momamel2
      @momamel2 4 года назад +1

This is a great tip as well if you online shop and get the coupon type emails all the time but don’t want to delete them. Temptation is a little devil. ;)

    • @laurac4572

I have a separate email specifically for that purpose. I only use that email for coupons and store mailing lists so that those types of emails are not mixed in with my regular email.

Thank you Dawn, for this video. I feel like you just gave me permission to delete!! I felt like an important thing to check for before the mass deletion, was pictures or videos sent as attachments, so I filtered my inbox to see only emails with attachments and I only one that had an sweet/ important picture I wanted to keep! Apparently I have been keeping up on archiving and saving them (which has been a goal of mine in 2019). And that was the biggest thing that was holding me back from deleting emails anyway. Another thing was worrying about missing sales and promotions. Well, regarding that "fear" this was good timing today feel inspired by you to mass delete because my shopping for this month is definitely DONE and dont need to see any more ads and promotions right now anyway! Whew! Over 1000 pieces of digital and mental clutter just left my life.I feel newly empowered to swat away the new emails that are on thier way into my inbox as we speak. I have NEVER before had an empty inbox and its feels so good. It makes me more excited for the fun holiday festivities coming up. Btw, it would have been even more to delete, but about a year ago I set up some rules for emails from certain senders to auto delete after certain number of days. As a maintenance technique, that has saved from literally tens of thousands of email to look at and think about over the past year. Thanks again!

I just cleaned out my inbox 2 days ago! My husband had been complaining for years about the big mess and the enormous pile of unread emails. I started at 14000 unread emails! I am subscribed to way to many mailings. So I started with labeling everything as ‘read’. And finding groups of emails to either label and put in a folder or delete as a group. It did make me want to run away haha, but am glad I finally fixed it.

I have recently done this, and you are so right...they do keep a-comin’ every day. I recently unsubscribed from some emails I had been enjoying for two reasons: i was getting 10-12 a day with a breezy”if you can’t read them all each day, just delete them; and they were less and less substantive, and longer and full of ads...full of ads. So, delete and unsubscribe, I did. 10-20 emails a day from EVERYONE is onerous to me.

I had over 2,500 emails in my inbox. Now I have 10. WOW! I did move quite a few into a saved folder, but at least now if I needed them, I'd know where to find them and starting with 10 emails seems like a manageable amount. 2,500 emails is not manageable. I did go through many of them, but found that once I identified certain types that I didn't need, I could delete pages at a time of things like newsletters I used to read and hadn't deleted even after unsubscribing. Thank you for your help with this! Seriously! I can't believe I did it. It helps that I'm sick and can barely move, so I needed something easy and somewhat mindless to work on. This was perfect. Thanks again!!

I go through my emails every morning and evening... it’s part of my morning and night routine. I have unsubscribed from a lot of stores that I never shop. If I shop at the stores frequently I have their app which usually has all the coupons I would use such as Joanns, Meijer, and Michaels just a few. If it’s an email I want to keep I will “starred” ...much easier to locate.

I needed to hear this! I’ve been trying to come up with ways to keep my inbox manageable. But it’s really hard so I will use your tips.
Also, I use the tag option a lot. I will tag a new person or business so that it goes directly in that folder when it comes. So when I’m ready to tackle that subject/person it’s right there. Also you can search “unsubscribe” and all of the subscriptions come up!! So you can delete in mass, tag, or pick & choose.

Done. 26,000 unread emails deleted, fifty at a time! I noticed the back-up plan fits your model: the emails are still available for a trial storage period in case we really need to "look in the box" again. Keep up the good work for us.

I delete a lot in groups by searching for the sender (store name, person etc) knowing that I don’t NEED it for sure . That way it narrows down what I have to go through. Thank you - as always- for the motivation !

I try and take a few minutes every so often while I'm looking at my e-mails I'll try and delete in mass. For example if I come across e-mails from a certain company or store or something, I'll go to the search bar and type in part of the e-mail address and then I can delete all from them. So again, if I have e-mails from Subway, I can go in and unsubscribe, but then type in Subway in the search line and that will bring up all the Subway e-mails and I can delete them all. This seems to be a good way to start lowering the amount of e-mails while still having a little more control of what I delete. It seems like I have to unsubscribe several times for some companies before they actually remove me from their e-mails too.

Recently I started having a lot of promotional emails seep into my regular inbox (even though I have a promotional tab in gmail). I remembered hearing on RUclips channel "Do it on a dime" to set a filter that makes any email with the word unsubscribe go to a folder that you create labeled Marketing. This has cut down significantly on the emails I don't want in my inbox but they are still available if I want to see if there's a coupon code or something from an online retailer that I use. BEST TIP EVER! This would also work if you get a ton of emails from a certain companies that are trying to sell you a certain thing, like I get a lot that want me to buy life insurance.

I’m usually around Inbox-ten & that’s good enough for me. I hang onto emails that require action (usually to be done on my computer, not my phone),, reminding (like all the details for a kids’ event that’s written on my calendar), or patience (keeping an order confirmation only until it ships, then deleting the shipping notice when it arrives.) The Snooze function in gmail is awesome too btw!

I have been so overwhelmed with my crazy inbox (currently 14,711) it had gotten so out of hand I couldn’t manage it. I couldn’t figure out how to delete except for one at a time which is just too much. I’d sit down for 30 minutes and go on a deleting spree and then it felt like it filled back up the next day. Thank you so much for these tips!! I SOOO greatly appreciate it!!

I totally agree with you if I have more than 10 emails waiting I feel anxious just like I do if there is a pile of papers sitting in front of me. and right now with Christmas shopping I have to work a little harder. So I have folders for the items I am waiting to be shipped those that have been shipped and anything that needs to be returned. I’ve been doing this for six years now and I am happy that yahoo mail always makes a big :-) happy when it’s all empty I to have a home business and the same process goes with that as uncomplicated as possible

I love the "sweep" function and setting "rules".
I like getting emails with coupons and deals from certain stores/restaurants, but they quickly can clutter up my inbox. So I select 1 email. Set the rule that it goes automatically to a separate folder where I keep sales and coupons. Then I set another rule where it is automatically deleted after 1 week or automatically deletes all but the newest from that sender.
Then I "sweep" my inbox, deleting all from that sender in one click.
It takes more time than deleting everything all at once but it sets you up to have a better handle on incoming emails in the future.

The unread inbox is essential! Instead of deleting, I prefer mark emails as read in case I need to refer to something which I often do ever since going paperless. Just marking as read allows me to be quicker about clearing my inbox without the worry of weeding through what to keep since everything is searchable anyways. Then I can just focus on my unread inbox.
"Unroll (dot) me" is also free and incredibly helpful. I can not only unsubscribe, but corral any less important emails into only one single email that gives me a quick visual look at what's inside all of them instead of handfuls of emails to go through in my inbox daily.

I have different folders that I put certain e-mails in, such as British Gas, Tesco Mobile & things like that.
I also have yearly folders in which I save special e-mails such as 2021 - 2022, Blogs & Facebook. I often print special ones & put them in my memory books.

Paperwork is my nemesis! Doesn’t matter if it’s digital or hard copy. It’s getting better but what a slow process. Sometimes I want to pitch it all and just take my chances I won’t need any of it ever again (don’t think my bank would agree with that!).

Thank you for the tips! One way that helps me declutter emails is to sort by sender. That way, all the emails from "my friend" or "my hardware store" or "my favorite charity" are all together. I keep the newest one and delete the rest. Also, if I see that I am getting emails from a business or charity or inspirational site, I see if they have an option for limiting their emails to me. If I can reduce emails from daily to weekly or even just monthly, that saves me from deleting multiple emails every day. Also, if I receive emails from a group, I always choose the digest option (usually get one email with several messages once every few days, instead of an email everytime someone posts.

All your suggestions are exactly what I do. I stop feeling guilty about the desire to read them but just never getting around to it. Every time I would look at the unread emails I would feel the same stress/guilt as I would looking at the clothes I had spent money on and not worn. Give yourself a break and unsubscribe and delete them ALL!! Lol
