I don’t blame you for doing that Paddy! I probably would have given up at the beginning lol.. But I am glad that you made the right decision to abort the trip due the weather! Heat stroke is no joke! My brother had a heat stroke when he was a teenager playing basketball with his friends! They had to call my mom at her job to meet him at the emergency room!!
All I have to say is “It’s better to be safe than sorry!”
Good luck when you decide to try it again in the winter!

You did not give up. You simply made a choice to not die. A very brave and smart choice. You won over your ego in a very hard battle. This was an important thing for you to achieve. Not the bike ride. It was a huge win.

@@kippsguitar6539 so what? He's done more by trying things in his years than most of us. If you're going to try more adventures you're going to fail more. The need to be seen winning all the time is life and energy stealing. It puts people in a place where we fear to attempt. So, please, keep your judgement away from someone who is doing trying, failing and succeeding. I intend travel and YouTubing it so my family have a momento of me. I'm disabled and later middle aged. I'll fail constantly. Voices like yours make me want not to try to live. Please don't 😊

My advice would be to make a series like "exploring Thailand on a bicycle" where you choose nice regions of the country to ride through. You can also take trains if it’s more convenient from time to time. A more realistic and enjoyable way to explore Thailand with a bicycle 🚴🫶🏻 (during a more convenient time of the year)

Your failure was preparation. You failed the second you started. Don’t beat yourself up for getting on the train. That’s not when you failed. That’s just when you gained the knowledge that it can’t be done the way you prepared for it. You definitely made the right call to get on the train, and if you try again, you will have so much more wisdom than you did going into this. The key word is wisdom. Ask anyone wise, how they got that way, and they will rattle off all their failures, and not their successes 😊

Perhaps if you decide to do this again cycle sections but then use the train to get past difficult sections. We live in Phetchabun and I would have happily picked you up in Phitsanulok, put the bike in the back of the pick up and driven you over the mountains to our province where you had a really amazing time when you came through on Dreamie. Also, there are rural roads from here down through to Lopburi and then onto Ayutthaya. Reach out if you decide to do this again. Having a support network of people throughout the country would help. You made the right decision.

Paddy, you bicycled more than 600 kms from Mae Sai to Phi Chit. More than half of the distance to the Gulf of Thailand. That's an enormous achievement for someone not really prepared, during a dreadful heat wave. Tough man! But when your body says stop, and when your mind says stop, you have to listen to yourself.
Someone said you should have used an e-bike: I totally second this, and when you get it, make sure it's adjusted to your dimensions. your knees are precious, keep them in good shape.
Later this year, maybe in November, you'll have time to try again, with an e-bike to reach Malaysia, or maybe reach Cambodia via the entire Sukhumvit road.
What a superb adventure you just lived!

I live about 35kms NE of Chiang Rai and I'm an avid cyclist covering around 250-300 kms a week. I admire your attempt to cycle the length of Thailand as a complete novice and even more so by admitting that it wasn't for you (this time). Probably the best time to cycle in Thailand is just after the rainy season (end of Oct onwards) it's cool especially in the mornings. Just chalk this up to experience and you'll be better prepared next time.

I have no doubts you have done the right thing. I cycle 2 laps of Suvarnabhumi ( 47km ) 3 times a week and I can tell you it’s like 80km in normal 20deg conditions.
You had a crack and that in itself is a success.
I personally believe you took too many km in per day and do 50km and build up. Hills n heat will kill ya in Thailand.
You will be back and all the better for it.

Should have used an e bike . It's easier in the heat and hills . 80km on an e bike is fine and you can charge over night .
Cycling on a highway is a no no too dangerous and boring . Nothing wrong with having a few rest days . Doing 140 km is like a tour de France stage !
Cycling at night anywhere is extremely dangerous .
I have cycled a lot in Thailand and the east and it's ok if you prepare properly

Very good decision mate, even though you probably don't want to hear it. Many years ago I went out cycling on a blazing hot summers day (mid 30's) here in Europe, and I was an avid cyclist at the time. About 20km's from home in the middle of nowhere out in the countryside I started suffering badly from heat stroke, and I mean badly. My body gave up completely and I lost the strength to turn the pedals. It was scary as hell I can tell you. I seriously though I was on the verge of passing away. I was dizzy as hell, couldn't even stand up, and my head was spinning like a tumble dryer. By sheer luck I had stopped by a water fountain and sat there chugging water for ages in the shade until I could stand again. If it wasn't for that water fountain and the bit of shade, I've no idea what could have happened. And the worst thing was that I still had to cycle back, which was a very unpleasant experience. No doubt if I was in Thailand I wouldn't have made it with that humidity, even though it was a very sweaty day.

I did some motorbike travel (thanks to you) and made sure to take the long ways through villages and stay off the highways. It took longer and was immeasurably better. Live and learn. Way too much riding for a new rider. Wrong time of year. My first thought was Thai roads are very dangerous. I am a 30 year cyclist/mtb who went to the dark side and bought a E mtb last year. Game changer. Good days use less battery, bad days use more battery. Specialized turbo Creo-2 will be my next “ gravel” bike- will carry 2nd battery- I would have a 3rd battery for possible failures on a long trip. Easily do 100km a day and have fun doing it. On those days your not feeling it- let the bike help you more. You need less ride time- more visit/ observation time. The E bike would let you take more rural/longer routes and not think about the distances so much. Glad your back in Thailand, look forward to more content.

It's too dangerous on the highway. Thai truck drivers live off Kratendaeng (red bull) or even something worse like Yaabaa. Every 8kms you'll see a truck that's overturned into a ditch.

As for you running down the middle of thailand. Open your eyes. There are fabulous scenes, trees, animals, rivers, villages with restaurants selling unusual foods , people so much unusual to a city boy, etc, etc. dont blame thailand for your short comings. But I do agree re meeting people, if you stop to see what youre missing and talk with the locals, youre missing out the mileage and your trip would take a lot longer than youve planned. As for anyone cycling 140 km, on their own, hardly stopping. Id say you entered the idea with your eyes closed. And without stopping at interest points, whats the point !

Ok. Totally agree with your decision. Yes, you need to enjoy it. See and share the beauty of the country. And above all do it safely. In the future if you pick this back up planning safe travel before sunup is okay but if you’re traveling in cooler months it won’t be necessary. This is a great presentation. You made a very difficult decision. Sometimes the plan just needs to change and take a turn (phun intended)! Be safe, be well, rest up! Cya out there! Great quote…keep moving forward 👍

A very compelling story, keeping us riveted.
Coming up on 60 trips around the sun this December, I have learned (the hard way) that there is no such thing as failure. It doesn't exist in reality, only inside our head. Reflecting back on times such as these, when I felt like I had failed, I see quite clearly that these moments made me stronger and wiser and more compassionate. In other words, $hit like this makes you more fully-human and the wisdom is worth every drop of tears and sweat.
Next time (and there will be some kind of next time), you'll come up with different strategies or different goals...and I can't wait to watch as you tackle those. Good job, mate!

i do my fair share of Suffer-fest on 2 wheels, but lately i've kept things down to 50 a day and lots of rest-stops, some lasting for three days if the bungalow and scenery warrant it. my equipment is top shelf and fits like a glove but i still push up a lot of hills. just finished nong knai to ubon down the meykong. there are places to sleep every few kms, no need to push it. quite often if the wind is unfavorable, i'll just rest that day, or change routes...forget the destination, it's the journey that counts.

I've done several bike trips, all carrying full gear and camping out. A positive attitude and appetite for adventure are no substitutes for proper research and planning. You set yourself up for failure by not doing that. Lesson learned, I hope.

Paddy. I love your videos. But this trip was doomed from the start. You need to be in good physical condition. You might want to follow “exploring by bicycle”. Claire is an amazing woman who bicycles all over the world. Her journeys are an inspiration to all bikers. I look forward to seeing your next biking attempt where you finish with a smile on your face

I was hoping you'd get on that train! Way to go...that was the wise thing to do. This is NOT a fail. I've watched your videos for a year and seen almost all of them and often said to my wife, "I need to be like Paddy...he never complains!" You are not a complainer. If you decided not to continue you must trust yourself and your intuition. When you said you found a train station that had a train leaving for Bangkok I thought what an amazing creation of synchronicity. You went to the perfect town with a train to the place you wanted to be! It doesn't get any better than that! Huge success if you ask me! Love your videos!
