All Waymo cars are Jaguar iPace. Plenty of non-self driving ones in the UK. Early ones had a couple of issues (leaky windscreen and dodgy cells in some of the batteries) but broadly speaking they're reliable and well regarded cars. Quick, too - all versions of them have a standard 400hp, AWD drivetrain.
Never a dull moment with Casey LaDelle! Wild stuff, thanks for bring us along. And as a fantastic father he goes in the solo flight before putting the family in harms way - well done!

I recently rented a car that had some of the new fangled driver support features… none of which I have ever had or used. After a few day, I started playing with some of the options… Speed Control, worked as expected; Proximity Detection, kept me a safe [selectable] distance from vehicle in front of me, although had glitches where it would scare the hell out of me…approaching an intersection, with traffic slowing and following distance reduces, then vehicle in front [quickly] shifts to left turn lane, my vehicle now sees LOTS of clear space ahead and ACCELERATES towards the traffic ahead… That is stopped for the red light !!! … causes seatbelt test! The best though… is Lane Control, that I found great for long straight roads, but found out it simply turns itself OFF on somewhat curvy roads… of course it turns itself OFF right in the middle of a curve and IMMEDIATELY thinks going straight is a good way of letting you know it’s time for you to pay attention. Having that experience makes me think I might not be comfortable in a totally automatous taxi.
We had a family friend who lived in the Bay Area and she bought a new car every 2 years. In about 1963 she bought a Jaguar sedan. She was an archeologist and drove any back roads she wanted without any concern whatsoever. In 1965 she sold it back to the dealer and bought a new Mustang. A couple of weeks later the dealer told her she got rid of it just in time because the transmission died. She was a wonderful lady.
No problems, we have them in Phoenix, one got lost and fire and rescue had to get the passenger out, it shut itself down, at an unknown dead end street,
That car ride was neat from this side because we didn't have much of a choice. It was still interesting to see how "aware" that the car is of the environment that it takes you through. It actually was very impressive to see the close quarters that it was in. There are thousands of hours of people driving around town at every hour of the day in every conceivable scenario so that they could build a data base, that was being added to as you rode along. @@pennytrui1149 Don’t both Waymo and Cruise have operations centers staffed 24/7 that can remotely control their “driverless” cars when they get into trouble. That is one of the many reasons that they can only operate in limited geographic areas that offer good remote connectivity for the drivers. In Tesla’s case they rely on the owner to supervise the driving behavior of the car so they don’t have that limitation. In reality I think both systems are supervised. But you can buy a Tesla with Full Self Driving in the $40K range and it will function even on new roads that haven’t been mapped. And as we know, roads are changing all the time. I want to see a self-driving car to off-roading, rock crawling, drive in the snow, drive on a road that's not pavement or maybe even just to have fun drive on a road that's covered in water
The future is now! 💫 Thats a really great technology demonstration. If a computer can land a passenger jet, it can drive a car. The obvious difference is all the moving and often erratic "obstacles" on a street, but if you give the computer a full picture of whats going on around it, it can handle it. And thats what all these external sensors are for, thats a lot better than tiny thingies hidden in the bumper of ordinary cars that enable some sort of autonomous driving but require a driver behind the wheel to grab said wheel and hit the brakes when it fails to see something. The only downside is, it puts taxi drivers out of work. But on the other hand, it also requires a lot of highly qualified people in the background to make it work. Technological progress has always shifted labor around from one task to another.
I got the opportunity to follow the chase scene from the movie Bullit in my 67 Fastback it took about eight hours but SF can be a fun place to visit if you have a friend that lives there.
I think it would be cool if these had a "tour mode" where it would give newcomers and tourists a tour around a city, passing by all of the most popular or classic places to see. I think it would be a great way for people to safely get to see a city's highlights when they first visit. It would also allow tourists to gawk without causing any disruptions in traffic flow.

Over 14.8M rider-only miles driven through the end of March, it was up to 3.5x better in avoiding crashes that cause injuries and 2x better in avoiding police-reported crashes than human drivers in SF & Phoenix." And this is the worst it will be.
It looks fun, but also kinda scary… and infuriating when you’re waiting to exit it in a busy environment. So impressed by its progression threough areas where a lot of drivers panic etc
This was a pleasant surprise! I just barely got done arguing with some dumb ass truck drivers about autonomous trucks(I'm a trucker too) and then this shows up in my feed. Loved the display showing what it could 'See" and examples of it making decisions and navigating obstacles. This was amazing! When I drove truck in Phoenix 5 years ago, waymo was all over the place and the things were constantly cutting in front of cars(and us) , and every car had 2 or 3 engineers in it. One driver and 1 to 2 people with laptops. There was a Mall by where we unloaded at and Waymo used that extensively to test their cars. It was amazing to see them navigating around. I've had to tailor my career in anticipation of Autonomous Semi trucks and choose jobs that , in the future' will still require Human assistance to load/unload and navigate plants and backing(I hope)
Yup they have sentience, yup you are courageous after seeing a bunch of them all go to one intersection and park stopping the city traffic for hours ,sounds like a warning from them.
I love driving no interest in evs at all but i love this as a way of getting home from the pub not having to talk to the cabbie drunk sounds like bliss to me
Fleets of Waymos with drivers mapped the city for a solid year, if not more, 24 hours a day. Information on the company was pretty limited, creeped a lot of people out. There are still issues, but nowhere near as its' competitor, Cruise. They were a disaster. One drove into a very active construction zone. A lane, running the length of an entire city block, with multiple cones, barriers, electronic signs, trucks and many workers in vests, it maneuvered around all of that and drove into freshly poured concrete. Not too soon after, one hit a pedestrian and their permits were suspended.
None of that matters since both Cruise and Waymo have significantly better driving records per mile driven than human drivers. Is not even close. Also, the Cruise vehicle that hit the pedestrian wasn't being controlled autonomously. A remote human driver had taken over.
@@damonhtoo Let me preface this with I am pretty indifferent when it comes to Waymo. I personally have not seen anything egregious from their cars. Although recently there have been rumblings of Waymo playing with their reported accident numbers. And I do side eye when they 'rest' they pull minimally over to the curb on a narrow street, with all lights out at 4am. I work overnights and see their odd parking. Cruise on the other hand. You may even have an answer to this, but I have to wonder what the breakdown is of how many cars were on the streets and at what time of day and when the majority of their reported accidents occurred. Because I would see far more Cruise cars out and about at low traffic times of night than peak times during the day. Yeah, human driver errors. I'm partial to taking cabs and it is still very common to see Ubers and Lyfts going the wrong way on a oneway street.
@@marymaclaren9553 Cruise has many videos uploaded to their youtube channel of split screens showing a timelapse of them driving autonomously for 8 hours straight. One half is dash cam, the other half is what the sensors are seeing. Very similar to Waymo driving.

I was following a WayMo in Phoenix, AZ, that was following a landscaping truck with a trailer full of potted trees. The trees at the back of the trailer were waving pretty heavily in the wind.
That was really cool Casey! Thanks for sharing
I got the opportunity to follow the chase scene from the movie Bullit in my 67 Fastback it took about eight hours but SF can be a fun place to visit if you have a friend that lives there.
Great to see you and your family survive going to San Francisco. Going to San Francisco more of a risk then being in a self-driving car. LOL
San Fran is a lovely city, one should work on really be intentional about not being afraid of that which is different.
@@sudo_rideurbike2792 San Francisco used to be a lovely City turn into a shit hole
Must say, this video was very interesting. I'm blown away. I'd be freaking out, not being in control
This was nuts. Thanks for sharing Casey. Good idea !!
That was a fun video to watch... Thank you for edumacating us...
Because of you, I know how to ride in a driverless car, but Most impressive....I know how to erect a circus tent!!!
Please sneak in one of these gems now and then!
I loved it!
That was an amazing video. Thank you for being brave enough to show the rest of us how a self driving car works in a big city.
As a San Franciscan I prefer these waymos rather than Ubers. Thanks for visit our city!
Wow, this was a great video to watch. Never knew about how these cars work. Then I searched in RUclips for these type of cars and the amount of wrecks are off the charts. Be safe
Not the same kind of driverless car
"New data shows that the Waymo Driver continues to make roads safer. Over 14.8M rider-only miles driven through the end of March, it was up to 3.5x better in avoiding crashes that cause injuries and 2x better in avoiding police-reported crashes than human drivers in SF & Phoenix."
And this is the worst it will be.
This is incredibly entertaining to watch 😆
That was actually interesting and I will watch that again !!
I grew up in a town of 600 in Nebraska in 1950s. THIS STUFF IS CRAZY !!!!!!!
It looks fun, but also kinda scary… and infuriating when you’re waiting to exit it in a busy environment. So impressed by its progression threough areas where a lot of drivers panic etc
Laugh out loud moment - honks from the car behind you. Great video!!
I love driving no interest in evs at all but i love this as a way of getting home from the pub not having to talk to the cabbie drunk sounds like bliss to me
Very interesting I'm glad you did this an shared with us your ride.
@@joeberanek6653why? the issues in the comment you are replying to don't even pertain to EVs
very interesting.
Johnny Cab
TOTAL RECALL...
They made it to Earth
_Just Drive, Christ - drive DRIVE!_
Very interesting. If the self-driving cars can navigate San Francisco that’s a major feat and forward step for me to trust in its capabilities. Looks like the technology will definitely be sticking around and be common place even in my lifetime. Pretty cool!
They've been driving autonomously for like five years in SF and are doing 100K rides per week.
I fly into SFO a couple times a year and take the Airporter to Santa Rosa , I've seen those cars , thought it was a google mapping car , thanks for the ride , cool !
My wife and I were in the same place you were in this vid but we didn't do the driverless cab though and S.Franciso is a way different thing to us county kids ! Hope you all had fun out there
Was there over 20yrs ago visting the Pier's overlooking Alcatraz & the G.G. Bridge etc.... Certainly not the same anymore...
Still the same
That was fun to watch. Thanks for doing this!
I lived in San Francisco Bay Area many years ago. If you think your Waymo ride was crazy, try riding in a taxi! 😮
Funny.. what’s in that sandwich… cat runs by 😂 Great video Casey!
That is completely insane Casey. I almost want to go to San Francisco just to ride in one of those cars😂😂
Lots of tourists are coming here to ride in them!
I detest these cars. And see them all the time. But, I love the neighborhood where you landed. My beloved late cat was born feral in the larger area there, at the Broadway Tunnel ❤❤❤.
Thanks for taking us on your weird driverless ride. I’m impressed with the ride, but it still scares the 💩out of me.😂
I was following a WayMo in Phoenix, AZ, that was following a landscaping truck with a trailer full of potted trees. The trees at the back of the trailer were waving pretty heavily in the wind. The car’s sensors were freaking out about the waving trees, and it kept suddenly braking and making small swerves to the left and right, as it went down the street.
I’m having a panic attack watching this self driving car. Bad enough riding with my husband😂😂😂. Thank You Casey for all you do. You are very much appreciated ❤
Thanks for sharing!
You should have yelled out the window "Help! I'm being kidnapped!!!" hahahaha You left the window open, now anyone could jump in!!!
I used to go to San Francisco a lot like 15 years ago. I loved it. Now all I hear is people talking about how bad it is but I still would like to go back
