So fun fact, Faith's reaction to "Miniature golf" was Eliza Dushku legitimately cracking up because she didn't know the line was coming, and the reaction was so good they kept it in.
I like the fact that Harry Groener knew his character (The Mayor) well enough that he could come up with a line that encapsulated him to the point of getting a genuine laugh from an actress and have it all be left in the final product.
I'm pretty sure the necromancer guy went to Giles. Like, the Mayor called upon him to do the ritual, the guy said, "oh, this is my boy Giles's town, he should probably be warned about this." Then Giles, Buffy and Angel came up with their plan and Giles called that dude back up and said, "hey remember how I introduced you to Barbara (or whatever his wife's name is), well, here's your chance to pay me back." That's how it goes in my head anyway.
If you listen carefully, Giles thanks the sorcerer guy for "coming to him" - it was a combination of being warned by the guy the Mayor tried to hire to take Angel's soul, and Buffy sensing something was up when Faith knew where the lightswitch was all coming together to form their plan for getting Faith to reveal herself.
Mayor Wilkins is such a fantastic character, the dichotomy of his personality is so unsettling and it lands so well because of the actor, he sells the FUCK outta this role.
Interesting mirror of Giles in the Mayor, that even though he's giving Faith heaps of positive reinforcement, he is also constantly telling Faith what to do & even what to think. Giles doesn't tell Buffy what to do; he merely advises her & trusts her to come to her own decisions.
I think Wesley was wrong - Mayor Wilkins IS human, but he's a warlock. He mentioned once he'd sell his soul for a better golf game, but that it was too late for that. So I'm guessing he had a soul, but he sold it to get the gift of long life, ie no longer aging. Then he recently did the thing to become invincible until the Ascension. A little less human, but still just using magic as a human warlock. :) My favorite villain in the Buffyverse.
I don't know if the Buffy fandom has a better answer for why Giles found out the magic dude was working for the mayor, but my headcannon is that he decided to have coffee with Giles since he was in town, and was chatty about why he was there. Cuz like, he's obviously so chatty.
I always just assumed that he knew Giles was a watcher and he probably knew the vampire with a soul was in league with the slayer, so he stopped in to see Giles and give him a heads up on the situation But I like your headcannon better haha
So happy to see someone else who truly appreciates Mayor Wilkins as the Big Bad. The show is known for having great villains, and nearly all of them have their fans, but he's my personal favorite. He's obviously and blatantly evil, but also affable and charming in a seemingly down-to-earth and sincere (if slightly dorky) manner, and the effect is absolutely unsettling. That's an actor who gets his character down to the core.
Also you look gorgeous today, like more than usual you’re giving *ethereal* with the glowing skin and shiny ass hair in combo with the black lipstick & eyeliner.
Giles in the beginning: "What happened to the still-beating heart of a virgin? No one has any standards anymore" Giles by the end: "I introduced him to his wife"
The way I see it, the shaman guy came to Giles after his talk with the mayor, because he realized it was a chance to pay his debt and restore the balance between them. Balance is a big thing with magic dudes.
Of all of the non-one shot villains in this series, Mayor Wilkens is my 2nd favorite. Spike is first, of course. I know a lot of people liked Angelus back in Season 2 really well, and David Boreanz played the hell out of it, true, but Wilkens *is* so unsettling. He circumvents how one expects an evil, soulless villain to behave. (He confirmed that he had sold his soul when he was talking to Allan a few episodes back: "It's a little late for that. Can I offer them yours?") As far as what we learn about him, you'll have to wait and see. Once you are done with this season, I would suggest you actually look up his info to fill in any holes that weren't covered by the series. Though a *very* big clue was dropped this episode, and it's easy to miss with everything going on. Faith said, "He built this town for demons to feed on, and come Graduation Day, he's getting paid." That, coupled with the newfound knowledge that he's over 100 years old, and it becomes a little more clear why Sunnydale has a Hellmouth and has so many damn demons.
"Why do you need to take away Angel's soul?" A) Angel is a powerful force on the side of Good. B) Mayor Wilkins is Evil and planning on becoming more powerful. Therefore... C) Turning Angel from Good to Evil could not only remove one possible enemy from the field, Angelus could really mess up the Scoobies' ability to focus on stopping the Mayor from Ascending. Seems like a good play to me!
@24:30 - “Penny in the air…” ;) Also, there’s a small moment in this that I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone comment on: Faith’s line “he built this town for demons to feed on…”. If you ever wondered why there’s an entire town built on a Hellmouth, and (presumably) why the high school in particular is smack on top of it, now you know who to thank.
The twist of this episode is so good, and on rewatch you notice that Buffy notices Faith knowing immediately where the light switch in the demon's apartment is And the frustration about Angelus returning *again* is such a common thing, but it just makes the end so much better
It's not just the lightswitch, it's also the fact that only Buffy and Faith knowing about the demon and he ends up dead immediately, when one connects that with Faith knowing where the switch is...
Great reaction. On a rewatch it's interesting to pick up on little details that give away the twist like how David Boreanaz's performance as Angelus is a touch more theatrical and his face isn't as pale because they used different makeup.
I know it hasn't been that long but I was so excited to see your face in my feed today (that sounds wrong). Absence makes the heart grow fonder 😊. So any necessary breaks in the future will just make us appreciate you more. So big hugs. Hope everything goes smoothly. Love ya' ❤️
Enemies was a super episode where the arc of the show kept building towards Graduation Day. Again we see Faith kill the Demon in cold blood, as Angel had said previous once she had the taste for killing she would not stop. The twist with Angel pretending to have turned again to Angelus was superb. Faith realising at last what she is up against is brilliant. The build up to the finale in S3 is incredible. All is gradually being revealed with the Mayor and Faith against The Scooby Gang. The second half of S3 is really when BTVS became a stellar show! You gotta watch the last two together if you can, two stunning episodes for The Finale.
Good to see you (love the eye make-up by the way)! Best of luck with the house!! I'm happy to hear that the many things are good things. Stressful at times perhaps, but overall good. I'll expect you when I see you!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Yeah, better on a rewatch. I think I had that same reaction of "really? again?". Not sure how the scriptwriters could have avoided that while still keeping the twist.
nice reaction personally i parly blamed Buffy , she never accepted Faith nor enter her into her inner circle she treated her as co-worker more then friend about the Mayor i LOVE his relation with Faith, even tough he is evil, he still have emotion and seem to literally treat Faith like a dughter and care about her, it make him a much deeper and rounder character about seeing twists -> for me it not about the twist but more a bout the EXECUTION of it , i prefare a twist/clishe i seen coming but that was done well over a surprise done poorly
I blame the Scoobies far more than Buffy. Buffy and Joyce are the only members of the extended group who we see actively trying to include her in things or showing concern for her wellbeing between the end of her introductory episode and her manslaughter of the deputy mayor, and Buffy was still defending Faith as a very troubled girl with a rough childhood after Faith tried to strangle Xander. But Xander and Willow seemed to totally lose interest once she was no longer the cool new girl in town.
She never accepted Faith? Did you see Bad Girls? Faith is the one who didn't invite the others. Buffy and Xander tried to help her even after she killed the deputy mayor. I think you've been gaslit by a TV show character.
@@godmagnus i seen bad girls , yes she hanged with faith therem but it was initiated by Faith . did Buffy invited Faith ever ? (the 1 dinner time was JOYCE), buffy see where Faith live (in that awfull 1 room) and no reaction . did she ever call her or talk to her beside slaying ? dont get me wrong i DONT think Buffy was evil , but she is an only child +a Type and she didnt had good chemistry with Faith who is also A-Type imagine what could happen if Buffy invited Faith to stay with her and Joyce ?
@@godmagnusto be fair why would Faith believe Xander was genuine when in her eyes he was just trying to save Buffy’s ass? I dont think most of the blame should go to him or willow tho. The true villains are Giles, Wesley, and the council. They should have never had her in a dirty motel, and Wesley should have been more consumed with training Faith than getting on Buffy’s good side so he could be in her world. Clearly they all felt like Buffy was the real slayer and that Faith was just backup.
So fun fact, Faith's reaction to "Miniature golf" was Eliza Dushku legitimately cracking up because she didn't know the line was coming, and the reaction was so good they kept it in.
"How did Giles know to contact this one guy?" He didn't. The guy came to him, according to Giles' thank you at the end.
I like the fact that Harry Groener knew his character (The Mayor) well enough that he could come up with a line that encapsulated him to the point of getting a genuine laugh from an actress and have it all be left in the final product.

Yes, and also Faith's bad acting when trying to seduce Angel. He could see right through it.
You know you’re a major Giles simp when eating a banana is compelling. I’m here for it.
I think Wesley was wrong - Mayor Wilkins IS human, but he's a warlock. He mentioned once he'd sell his soul for a better golf game, but that it was too late for that. I’m so happy they “got you!” This episode is so much more effective when the dupe works. Such a fun reaction! 👏🏼 👏🏼

The "second best" moment changed everything; it changed my life. Such an iconic moment.
As someone on a mood stabilizing medication the “I’m so stressed but I’m medicated so I’m not crying anymore” fuckn got me 😂

I am so glad you like Anya. She is quite the character.. I was so excited at Dallas Comic Con when I got to meet her and take a picture with her.
Giles in the beginning: "What happened to the still-beating heart of a virgin? No one has any standards anymore"
Giles by the end: "I introduced him to his wife"
...So, Angel just wanted an excuse to punch Xander, right? That definitely didn't seem necessary for the plan to work.
The way I see it, the shaman guy came to Giles after his talk with the mayor, because he realized it was a chance to pay his debt and restore the balance between them. Balance is a big thing with magic dudes.
I had the impression that the shaman, even with the debt, knew Giles was in Sunnydale due to his relationship and the Hellmouth.
Of all of the non-one shot villains in this series, Mayor Wilkens is my 2nd favorite. Spike is first, of course. The captions were like 3 episodes ahead 😁
"Really? He sold out for 28 bucks?" That was 1999 money, 28 bucks went a LOT farther back then 😄

Never get tired of the look of surprise from reactors with the big reveal. Cracks me up

Every single Faith/Angel kiss makes me yell “I’m uncomfortablllllllllle” out loud….
„I never known a Villian so sincere…“
Definitely had me fooled, loved the twist, so I guess Buffy and Angel are off again for awhile!
