The mayor is trying to drive a wedge between Buffy and Angel but as you said there is a lot of truth in what he was saying.
I think The Mayor is my favorite villain of Buffy.
Others may be more dramatic, or more power, or whatever.
But The Mayor shows us how mundane and banal evil can be. He's smart, he's usually calm, cool and collected, he actually seems to care for Faith, but he has a plan and gosh darn it he's going to follow through with it!
Also, remember to wash your hands, especially under your nails, and there's no need for swearing, now, is there?
He's the reason I'm so obsessed with keeping my nails clean, even 25 years later. I can still hear his voice in my head. 😆

Welcome back and congratulations on the new house! That's exciting and looks like a lovely work space. Definitely a great season overall. The Mayor is one of my favorite big bads - creepy in the weirdest ways and yeah he's unfortunately right here. Faith too is great character- a lot of depth so well played by Eliza. Next episode has one of my favorite scenes in the series - you'll know it when you get there. Definitely worth watching Angel so will see you on that journey too!

Great episode, they’re may be some hope left for Faith, notice how she was looking at the spider when she left the room, I hate spiders and I’m not sure what’s going on with Cordy, she’s actually been one of my favorites

These last few episodes really ramp up the pace and character development at the same time. 😁
Congratulations on your new place. Willow's take on Faith's choices is certainly interesting. The whole concept of turning teenagers into soldiers who have to fight a secret war is very messed up and I don't think Willow realizes just how priviliged she is by having more of a choice in the matter. Even Buffy had it much better than Faith did since she had a much more stable home life.

I am also compelled to tell you that I obligingly did my best Brad Pitt impersonation with "WHAT'S IN THE BOX?"
I read a magazine article the week this episode aired with the author saying nothing happened in said episode because Wesley was right and they were right back where they started. I remember thinking that the author didn't get the point of the episode. The episode itself is about the conversations people have about moving on:
1. Faith telling Willow she doesn't need the Scoobies because she has someone who treats her better than they did (The Mayor. It's why she was never going to stay even without The Mayor or her Deputy Mayor mistake. In this episode, saving Wesley wasn't about saving him, it was about the taste for the kill, as Angel describes it to Buffy in the _Consequences_ episode).
2. Willow telling Buffy she is willing to go to Sunnydale University over Harvard, Stanford, Yale, and Oxford.
3. The Mayor telling Angel and Buffy they are in a rut and have a doomed future (something they desperately needed to hear. Buffy doesn't want to think about the future despite saying when she does all she sees is Angel in _Bad Eggs._ She's in denial).
Metaphorically these conversations are all about the realization that high school is almost over and characters, whether they attend high school or not, should reprioritize what they have known up until now. Wesley and the magazine article author are right in that they didn't come any closer to stopping The Mayor, but that was never the point of the episode. The episode was always a character-based one about the importance of moving on.

S3 is definitely one of the best seasons from the whole show. The arc of the show building up to Graduation Day is brilliantly handled. The part where they try to break in to steal The Box Of Gavrok is obviously a parody/homage to The Mission Impossible movie and adds some comedic relief to the episode. Willow is now really gaining real power, and this is great foreshadowing here. It was interesting to see Oz who is normally calm and collected in human form absolutely flip when Wesley was saying there should be no swap. Great interaction with Angel and The Mayor. Faith leaving the knife behind also very symbolic for the future. Graduation Day is a brilliant finale to come.
