    "The vampires are out in force."
    They're so out in force that her Mean Girl posse have been forced to grow up. It's one of many little details I love - nobody has time for petty high school bullshit in this reality unless they're desperately trying to live while they can, like the guy who asks Cordy to the "winter brunch" (all their dances/events must take place during the day, another detail I love.) I love the hints that there used to be a lot more white hats (they barely react to Nancy's death - they're clearly very used to comrades in arms dying.)
    On a cheerier note, the white hats seem to have gotten in at least a couple of good punches, despite the hopelessness of this world - Darla and Luke are nowhere to be seen.

    The Master rose due to being successful in The Harvest which was his original plan, him being powerful enough to escape thanks to Buffy:s blood in Prophecy Girl was his backup plan. Thanks for describing Wishverse Buffy as GI Jane, far too many reactors thinks that she is acting like Faith which I have never agreed with.

    • @TheRiskPig
      @TheRiskPig  9 месяцев назад +6

      OH, RIGHT, THE HARVEST!!!!! Thank you, it's been so long that I forgot about that!
      And to add on to the comparison to Faith. Faith is bloodthirsty. It's her calling, but she seems to find pleasure out of the act, whereas Buffy in both universes does it because it needs to be done.

    "The term white hat refers to an ethical hacker whose job involves hacking into computer systems to detect security risks. The term and its definition derive from old movie westerns, where law-abiding heroes always wore white hats."

  • @coldservings
    @coldservings 9 месяцев назад +7

    You did pretty well on guessing, but with the Master, of course, his first attempt to escape--the Harvest--didn't need Buffy to happen, but she did stop it.
    "White hats" is a reference to an old trope from westerns where the "good guys" wore white hats and the bad guys wore black hats.
    There are two big points of this episode. One is that we actually see what we only guessed before: just how much of a difference Buffy made to Sunnydale. The other is just how big a difference having Giles as her watcher, and the others as her friends, made to Buffy's life and character.
    And, of course, the prophecy still held: Buffy faced the master, and she died.

    Most fans never realize it, but this episode wasn't about ANY of the characters who were in it, and that's all I'll say for fear of spoilers. I love it, it's my third favorite of all time (First is Becoming, second is Innocence).
    The very idea of a character wishing everyone into a horrible alternate reality and then dying halfway through the episode, leaving you wondering how they're gonna get out of it without her? Brilliant! What sucks, though, is that you can't just show someone The Wish, they have to see everything that came before it to appreciate it.
    White Hats: In old westerns, the good guys would wear white hats and the bad guys would wear black hats. Giles referenced this in Lie To Me.

    For reasons I can’t get in to right now, but most other Buffy fans here will understand, I divide this series into two parts: Pre-The Wish, and Post-The Wish. I will check in with you at the end of the season to provide more information. Throw a like on this comment if you understand, and are excited to welcome Kristin into the [REDACTED] fan club.

    The Wish is always a fan favourite. A great concept here with the alternative reality. We get introduced to Anya The Vengeance Demon, the moral of the episode is be careful what you wish for. Cordelia being Cordelia opens up the alternative dimension, some great comedy one liners here too, and of course foreshadowing again for the future. Cordelia's vacuous airhead friends are so cruel to her and others. Giles saves the day confronting Anya and restores things back to normal. Again we see S3 being so innovative with much better writing and storylines. It just gets better and better. I told you it's a 'bangerfest' from here on in to the S3 finale.

    Regarding AlternateBuffy™, I think you hit the nail on the head. Since she didn’t come to Sunnydale, she doesn’t get the support system will all know. Indeed, the support system may be something of anomaly; recall at the end of School Hard (2x03) Spike even points this out when he says “a slayer with family and friends; that sure wasn’t in the brochure”. Heck, there’s a case to be made that Willow saves Buffy’s life at the start of this episode. Buffy rarely needs help, but she doesn’t /never/ need help. (Take that, grammar!)
    One other small thing in this; did you notice that it’s Oz who kills Vampire Willow? :)

    I'm actually okay with an episode that solely benefits the audience in terms of understanding characters, themes, ideas etc and doesn't impact the characters themselves (although I think for obvious reasons these need to be one-offs). However, I do wish (ha) that this was a proper Cordelia episode and actually showed her being strong and overcoming her pain and her resentment, even in some small way just to show us the audience her potential for growth and healing. Her death here is certainly shocking, both in its imagery and the fact that we the audience lose our POV character halfway through the episode, but otherwise ends up feeling like it wasted an opportunity.
    Still one of my favourite episodes of the series and your reaction was great! Congratulations on passing your classes!

    Cordelia doesn't get closure for herself or justice on others because no one remembers. Had they remembered I would argue there was closure and justice.
    I appreciate Buffy wanting to see if Buffy is OK, but unless her and Cordelia were friends Cordelia isn't going to care, especially considering she's friends with both Willow and Xander and the next day she sees them smiling in the quad.

    It was actually cool to see Xander and Willow on the dark side (temporarily) however you shouldn’t be so hard on Xander😁, Willow is as much to blame for the heartbreak to Cordy and Oz, I did like Oz’s comment to Willow, very appropriate

    • @maddwitch
      @maddwitch 9 месяцев назад +1

      I personally I cut Willow *some* slack for the simple fact that Willow has had feelings for Xander since before Buffy came to town. She'd been in love with him for years. Xander knew that she had feelings for him and purposefully ignored them, because he didn't see her in that way. Just because Willow is with Oz now that doesn't mean that those feelings she had for Xander magically disappeared. She was emotionally compromised, and if i hadn't lasted past that one moment in her room, I wouldn't have blamed her. I wouldn't have liked it, I would have still been disappointed in her, but I would've understood how she could have gotten all mixed up when the guy she wanted for the longest time was suddenly right there, looking at her like she'd wished he would for so long. After that point, though, they're both equally wrong for sneaking around behind Oz and Cordelia's backs.

    I know the premise of the show is "one chosen one, one girl with the power to fight the vampires" etc., but in this episode, we see what happens to Sunnydale if Buffy had gone to Cleveland instead. So, in the normal reality, what's happening in the rest of the world? Is New York overrun by vampires? London? Hong Kong? It's the only issue I've had with the show. PS: SPOILER ALERT: I have seen the entire series, so nobody post any spoilers for Kristen.
