Today I'd like to show you how I turn a cheap LED projector into a very good home cinema projector. For this I use the Excelvan CL720D for about $150. It has all kinds of connections, but I really only need the HDMI port because I'll be connecting the projector to my computer to play movies mostly. I will not be using the analog inputs and USB connections as well as the built-in speakers. The Keystone lever is a mechanical trapezoidal adjustment of the image. However, the image becomes blurry both at the top and at the bottom, as the lens is no longer able to focus the image evenly. Therefore I will not use the mechanical keystone. This is not a problem because I will place the projector in front of the screen in the middle. The projector has a nice bright picture and the 720p resolution works well for me at the moment. The picture is excellent for the price. The most important thing for a home cinema projector is of course having a silent fan. I will measure the noise 3 feet away from the projector. It is 38 dB. Or of course that's too high. I will replace the low cost built-in fans with better quality computer fans. To do this, I turn the device around and take out all the Philips screws to open the case. Be careful when removing the cover because the control board is connected to the board by a cable. Here you can see how the image is directed through the mirror to the lens and then to the wall. Behind the mirror is a radial space that transmits air to the LCD panel to cool it. In front of the panel you can see the aberration lens, which I think is useless. The air then continues to enter the rear housing and is pushed out by a second fan. Here I have cut the plastic strips for the housing to have as little air resistance as possible. This helps a little, but it's still too high. So both fans are replaced and I'll start with the radial fan. To do this, I remove part of the housing to access the screw. Then it is easy to take it out. I will replace it with a BeQuiet 80mm fan. It is important that the fan is inserted correctly so that it pushes air in and not out. The arrows on the propeller help. Since the new propeller is axial rather than radial, I have to change the structure a bit. I just use cardboard and double-sided tape. I form a funnel out of cardboard, so that the new fan can get air well into the corner and behind the hole. I cut the old fan cable so I could connect the new fan. The new fan has a third cable to control the temperature, this cable is not connected. Now the second fan has been replaced. Here I need a 92mm fan. So far I've had good results with BeQuiet's Pure Wings. Here I also remove part of the case, so the fan cover can be easily removed. It is important that the new fan is the same size as the old one, so that it fits perfectly. Here also the direction of air flow should be checked during installation. Metal cooling ribs ensure cooling of the LED chip. To test, I turn on the projector and check the functionality of the two new fans. Both fans work well. Now everything can be reassembled and the case closed again. There will be another video soon on how to install the projector stand. At a distance of 3 feet, the noise test now shows only 18 dB, which is really nice and quiet. The fan conversion of about 20 euros was worth it. With the new bracket, the projector is placed centrally in front of the screen and a keystone is not required. I spent about $200 on this setup. I am very satisfied with the result and I hope this video will help as many viewers as possible save money. Please give me a like and share this video if you like it..
Bro this video inspired me so much and I came here to thank you . I have a very similar projector, chinese no name, but has a great LED 1080 projection. the only problem it has is that I changed it at warranty 3 times because of the fact that I got burnt spots on projection. So with this 3rd one I got, I watched your video, and contacted one of the electronists in my city to take the brand new exchanged projector and modify it to become a unique projector as well. And he did an amazing work just heard from him. The projector has 1 in and one out ventilators. He changed them both with better ones and added a 3rd one. Also, changed the position of some small pipes that are connected to the cooling system and put it on the exterior of the projector so that the heat remains further away from the more vulnerable parts. he also eased the main board, as everything went through it and was very hot because of this. he added a laptop charger extension, a separate one, to which he connected all the cooling system, alliviating the pressure on the main circuit, making it even "Colder" in the process. He also added the whole separate ventilation system a temporizator or something like that, it keeps on working for 10 minutes after I shut it down. He insisted on it, saying that it's a projector and when I put it into a position I do not need to bother it further. I think I found an amazing guy here, very cooperative and competent. And I have you to thank for inspiring me to finally do something about my projector that constantly breaks because I am in love with it and want to keep it, even if that means going old-school AF and modifying it into a unique piece. I installed 33 Ohm 5W resistors in series with my fans to reduce their noise. Works great. I also tried to shift the lens 1 cm up (down for ceiling mounted) to reduce the blur by reducing the required amount of keystone, which worked, but only a little.
4:53 - The fan has a third wire, which is "thacometric signal". It simply puts out a pulse at each impeller's rotation, so the computer's bios can sense its speed - or simply if the fan is "dead". Remember that, however, there's a difference in airflow between the "old" fans and the one you replaced...

I have repaired and refurbed various projectors. What people need to know is those Led's get very hot. The light is focused onto the lcd and without cooling it will darken. That cooling air must be properly channeled in its entirety. Not doing so will just be blowing air around in the same area. In this projector like many similar. The lcd fan also helps to cool the power supply and control board as well. So proper air flow is important. I personally leave the speakers there. In some cases they only have one to begin with although the onboard amp is wired for stereo, but there was only room for one. A reason the keystone lens must be there is because the focus lens expects a image of a certain size to reach it. Otherwise it will already be much bigger to begin with and result in the outer edges being cutoff and corners being rounded as well. So in a nut shell. It may look like these are thrown together but they are not. The circuits were tuned to work in specific ways with specific parts and the optics designed to function in certain ways as well. The best thing you can do with these is keep them cool, keep dust way from them, don't drop them, and don't use them for hours on end like a tv. Especially not the mini ones because those power adapters get real hot.
WARNING: "Radial" centrifugal or 'squirrel cage' fans push a LOT more air than axial fans of the same diameter at the same RPM. Along with the problem of redirecting the air flow, there will be less total air flow unless the axial fan is run at very high speed, removing most if not all of the noise benefit. If you swapped out the radial fan for an axial one, and the projector got dark or overheated, now you probably know why. (LCD's darken when overheated, as mentioned in an earlier comment.) Swapping out the LED fan is probably safe, since they are the same type, but I would check CFM ratings for the original and replacement fan before attempting it.
This is true, the radial fan also pushes most of the air directly on to the lamp for cooling. Removing this will result in higher lamp temperatures and much shorter lamp hours.
So, you consider it a cinema projector just because of two new fans? If I change the coolers on a shitty computer, does it magically become a gaming pc too?

if noise is the problem, and considering the location of the projector is above.. I'd cover the cooling fan hole with a tube like damper/sponge.. it doesnt affect the opening but absorb some of the noise

If you're using it with a PC you can replace the LCD panel with a 4 k LCD from aliexpress and use the new driver board instead of the projector's hdmi input. Costs about $240 for a 5,5" 4k LCD. A 2560x1440 LCD is only $85. A PC is required because they are mobile screens and need to be rotated in software as they are oriented vertically.

Changing the stock ducted type centrifugal fan for a standard radial one will most likely lead to reduced airflow across the lcd/polariser. Ultimately the Lcd will fail prematurely (pixel failure/polariser yellowing). Did you check the airflow over the lcd before and after? Same goes for fitting a 'quieter' fan for the led cooling. Quieter may not mean the same or more cfm to cool the lamp. Only time will show if the mods were worth it.
A good noctua fan might do the trick

I should have read the comments before attempting this 'mod'. 2 hours of CAD work, 15 hours of 3d printing only to find that the fans are insufficient. Although the fans are quite noisy, I suggest leaving the stock fans. For the price point, it's not a bad projector. And with some volume from the hifi system, pretty much drowns out the fan noise.
For me the biggest issue of those projectors is not the noise, but dust. My td96 has almost identical setup inside, but the case is different. It has absolutely no dust filters. After few hours the screen is covered with dust particles and it is visible on the wall.
I just got a jimtab m18, expecting the fans are the same, probably going to use noctua fans. I may even replace the thermal paste on the LED/heatsink. Since i assume the noctua fans, like the Be Quiet fans have lower airflow. Best to take full advantage of of the heatsink.

I just bought one, and I overcame the fan noise by adding two 5000 watt speakers. Now the ice cream man complains about me!

Without a dought, these are some suitable modifications for this projector, but I can't really say that 200 bucks are worth it for a 150 projector... I have an Epson eh-tw7200 and I have spent 30 bucks for constructiing a extracting/retracting mechanism so that it can hide inside a closet. My point here is that you should spent 30 bucks buying wooden parts and creating a stand of your own. 170 bucks for a stand is a lot...
Hes right, this is a great 720p projector, genuinely HD, but its so noisy it ruins the experience. Change that and it becomes a really great cheap projector. 120 inch screen thats got fantastic resolution. Try it before you knock it.
see i was just going to pay $100 dollars more and get something decent and reliable,but that cardboard wind tunnel blew me away not to mention cutting big chunks from the caseing! WTF ron, flammable material inside a high heat electrical unit!

I think you are a really good narrator. I don't see how two fans make your cheap projector a better one, for that to happen I think you need some things like a top lightbulb and great lenses (like Carl Zeiss from Sony for example). But aside that i liked your video a lot, your voice is pleasant, your articulation in great and your filming is clear. 2 thumbs up from me!
Carl Zeiss lenses are made in Germany....Sony is a Japanese Company.....Sony buy lenses from Zeiss UNPOLISHED.....Sony Carl Zeiss lenses are polished in THAILAND to reduce the cost...but unfortunately the FINISHING of the lenses are poor....So you don't have the sharpness of a true original Carl Zeiss lens.....I know this as a friends Father works for LEICA also a German Lens Manufacturer...
This projector colors is valid only for old movies and cartoons for kids. But i still will keep it, for summer house, as it still better than laptop or 32" tv.
I got the new magnetic levitation fans super quiet no bearings they are pricey at $29 but if you look around and or have coupons you can grab them for a cheaper price

@@felippealencar Well, after reading a lot and testing, do not do this tecnique, u will probably burn the lamp. If you need to reduce the noise, it is difficult in this type of chinese projects. The solution is to buy an axial fan but only one of better quality and less noisy, but never change the radial fan. U only can install a resistencia in series with the radial fan to try to reduce the radial fan noise. But i dont recommend any other solution. The resístance should between 20 a 30 ohms.

Not the best idea for sure...anyhow... The change of the axial fan is normally fine but you should have a look on the datasheet for the cfm and ! important ! the static pressure. An exchange should have similiar values. You should be fine by using a low noise fan even with lower specs because the led has typically a temperature sensor. Most probably the light output is reduced afterwards. Feel free to seal the connection to the cooler with aluminium tape or something heat resistant. Maybe this result in similiar performance / light output and lower noise. The exchange of a radial fan isn't that easy when using the original place. Radial fans have a really high static pressure compared to the cfm / airflow. Futhermore this fan is responsible to cool down the screen. Too much heat and you kill it. If you don't want to cut the housing to use a proper solution by using e.g. a big low noise axial fan it should be okay to reduce the rpm a little bit with a resistor... But ensure... The projector shouldn't see high ambient temperatures in a bad place afterwards. The screen normally don't have a temperature sensor and in genetal the projectors suck by not having temperature regulated fans.

It's not a bad hack. The projector has a 720p native resolution and is under $100. The issue is that without proper cooling the light will start to overheat the LCD panel which can cause permanent damage. If you have a decent sound system, you're not going to hear the fans of a projector. I replaced the halogen bulb in a cheap $30 projector with a more powerful one and it works fine as long as you keep it cool. Otherwise the LCD starts to turn black from the heat within a few minutes. Cheap low res projectors are more useful for outdoor use on camping trips or for projecting holiday imagery on a house. If you want to watch movies, save your pennies and buy something better.

Relax you dumb ass. Have you slept on physics? Sure its not ok to put paper inside electronic device but flash point of cardboard is around 400 F or 200 C.
You will never get close to such temp inside projector. Inside temps hover around 70 - 80 C or 180 F.
Most LEDs on the market operate at temp below 90 C.
So you are totally safe(in theory). You got that?
I am looking to experiment with mich higher brightness LED light sources in these cheap projectors. It seems to me this would be the primary way to make the picture far brighter. I did however break a projector already opening it to clean the mirror that somehow got a spec of debris caught in an adhesive that held it in place causing a big black blob on the screen. There was a black piece of adhesive backed cloth that completely covered the lcd ribbon cable to the point you couldnt tell the cable was under it. When I pulled the cloth to get to the stuff underneath it it separated the cable from The screen. It was quite irritating. The projector this happened on was a Yowhick native 1080p. It was decent but now I have a Yaber Y21 on the way which supposedly has overly loud fans as well. I may consider replacing them.

Much higher brightness will generally mean much more heat. More efficient LEDs will produce less heat for the same brightness rating though, so that may counteract it *somewhat*. You will need suitable fans to keep the temperature under control, or you'll have serious problems(& possible dangers).

Mi proyector tiene una abertura en la parte de abajo donde puedo limpiar el lcd y el polarizado y probe con un ventilador de 12v y uno de 5v y este último me funciona mejor xq le da el aire que nececita en cambio el de 12v la pantalla se oscurece ( le agregué un ventilador xq le había salido unas manchas amarillas y por ahora funciona bien

Also wondering if there's an effective method to take blower fan apart to clean (i just used compressed air). i know you can get wheel out (the dustiest part) and its wire electronic free so water could get thick dust off wheel (saw crappy just pics video on YT). But blower doesnt have screws holding it together, but really tight snap parts, so dont want to break snapclip things. Also then i could grease wheel motor cylinder. Amazingly you're the only video on youtube taking this model apart (& clone), cant even find fan cleaning

I purchased a ABOX A6 and noise is terriible like 60 db. I have to practically sit next to the projector due to my projector screen size and room configuration. I build a hush box and it was able to lower by 10 db, which is not enough, so now I am thinking of going chirurgical and change at least the noisiest fan. The image quality is good, so it has potential, but I want to do things right. Do you have any knowledge about the type of fans in the Abox A6 or any advices that could help. Thank you!
I've tried .... it doesn't work. Blower fan (1st fan in video) much more powerful than BQ pure wings 2. After a minute leds are overheated and black spot appeared on screen.
So DON'T DO THIS, the performance/air transport of these fans are not enough.

@@CrusadogPlay hey, so i basically tried to do the exact same thing as in the video. But the problem is that the fan choosen in the video are clearly not powerfull enough. When i fired it up with the new fan, a black dot appeared in the center of the screen, and it also became really hot. I had to stop it after something like 30-40 seconds because of this getting too hot. After this unsuccessfull try, I decided without any hesitation to put the original fan. By chance the projector didn't have any damage after rechecking that everything was back at it's place.
So honestly, my advice here will be to NOT do what is in this video.

Je vais essayer de garder le silence que les ventilos apportent en rajoutant un ventilo sous le LCD et un autre a la place des speakers

What size is the LCD panel on that projector? have you tried changing it but keeping the optics? there are even small 4K screens now
It's not just changing the LCD... you would also have to change the integrated processor, to play fullhd

Make sure the projector is oriented 90 degrees to the whole in each direction first of all. eg: If the projector is tilted down, then the top projection distance is shorter than the bottom so they can't both be in focus without a special lens design.

NICE! The only thing about these cheap Chinese projectors is that the intake fan doesn't have a dust filter. After using one myself, I notice that the lens started to show a lot of dark spots. I open the projector to find that the LED film was covered with dust. I used a soft cloth to remove the dust and closed it and power it up. All the spots were gone. But found myself having to do this over and over again. Do you know what can I do DIY that can stop the dust as a dust filter?
We used to use dryer sheets or panty hose as dust filters, for PCs, all the time. In the older days of PC modding. You could also go to most hardware stores and get some cheap air conditioner filter material, the type that is just foam, and cut it to what ever size you need. It won't keep all the dust out but will reduce it.

A projector especially a cheap one can get as hot as 200•c and you put a piece of flammable cardboard mad and dangerous. £200 plus risking a fire wow.

Any replacement fan will need to be able to move at least as much air, they're typically rated as ...CFM(cubic feet per minute) The air pressure rating may well also be important, or the fan may not be able to push enough air through despite the CFM rating.
Die BeQuiet Lüfter kann man auch echt überall einbauen :D Hab damit mal ne Minibar leise gemacht :)

yep, I rather just remove the stupid blower fan along with that side panel and the useless speaker and put a 120mm pressure optimized fan for rads with a dust filter and funnel, that thing creates more than twice the air flow that the original fan does while being totally silent and costing around 20$ shipped, at that point, this 100$ projector is an excellent buy, its essentially an "HD" screen at around 100" for about 120$ total, thats just unbeatable
but just for fun though, I'm thinking of replacing the lamp's heatsink-fan with a cpu AIO liquid cooler I have lying around, should last for decades running at half the current temp, I sometimes hear the plastic creaking due to heat stress(probably)

as there won't be enough cooling for the LCD.. when it gets overheated, it turns black. If you're Lucky after cooling down it will work again.. otherwise it really burned
Denny C I would like to understand too; what screen is been talked about? I thought it was so easy that no screen is needed for showing with a beamer. I just use my white wall. So, which screen will burn?
Pascal De Rudder inside the projector theres a small LCD screen. With strong light and lenses the image on the lcd will be projected into a screen or a wall (your choice). Because the light is so strong n most likely the position is close to the lcd screen... without proper cooling this will burn the lcd.. or simply the lcd got heated=turns black. I hope it is clear :)

yes but even with changes it's not really good, but by decreasing the color by 10% (50% default to 40% or maybe 35%) it is colorfull enough and you have less chroma, and now it's nice to see, the color are not accurate (they are not the original color tone but they look right, good :) )
Yes very good. I have had the 720 version in my bedroom for 2 years projecting on an mdf board that it fitted 2 inches away from the wall, with leds behind and the projector screen painted with a black diamond style paint. (DIY B&Q Perlecent paint + Grey). The screen size is 111 inches. The lumens started at 3000. After 2 years it dipped to around 2000 lumens until I opened and cleaned inside, which boosted it back up a bit but some elements of the LED have died so a new LED panel is next.
Impressed, I bought another version with 5000 lumens for about the same price, for my living room. 130 inches at 5000 lumens is excellent even in the day with the right contrast screen paint, so the projector in this video is very good but if you can get more lumens than this 3000 lumen version.

My CL720D is making a loud noise every time i turn it on now. Had it for nearly 2 years, and it's been perfect up till now, any idea what is causing the problem? i Have to turn it off and then back on around 2-3 times before the noise stops. any help with this would be very grateful..=]
Oh and i have contacted the seller on Amazon and the manufacturer, but still waiting for a response, which is disappointing.

Wieso müssen sie ihn dann noch weiter nach hinten machen, so dass vom Winkel her nur noch 20 Grad ungefähr offen sind für die Außenluft? Bei 4:14 hatte er doch eine viele Größere Luftfläche zum einsaugen und einen größeren WInkel.
Sie hätten mit dem Karton den Weg bis zur Außenluftöffnung enger machen können, dass hätt ich verstanden aber den Lüfter dann vom Winkel her so ungünstig zu legen, dass er nurn winzigen offenen Winkel hat versteh ich nicht und was das mit dem Karton dann soll.
Am besten wäre ja eine Kombination. Position von 4:14, dann mit Karton den Weg zur Luft enger machen und den weg vom Lüfter in den Projektor enger. Dass wäre meines erachten nach effizienter, oder?

I brought one of these and swapped the fans out for two old vacuum cleaner motors with noisy bearings and now I can watch films with sub titles.
Technically the third wire on the fans is for speed measurement

If you had added a bit of foam projecting go horizontally from the outside of the casing the fan sound on both intake and out-take would reduce by another 30% or so... Maybe another $5 for parts. That would bring it down to 12db to 13 db. The sound level would be the same leaving the unit but absorbed by the foam and converted to kinetic energy. But I noticed the other side is pointing away from potential users and would be absorbed further by some foaming on the wall. Might get another 3-4db there.

Hi, can you tell the speed in RPM of those fans? I'm getting Artic 800RPM or 1000RPM fans ultra silent but i'm not sure if they will be enough or if i should get at least 1200RPM or 1800RPM, can you help me with this?
