3:00 - I have the top of the line Oled and I have a very good projektor with ALR screen. Love them both but it is a joke to compare them. A projektor cant show black, therefore the ALR, a Oled is able to stop light completely. So in a totally light controlled room with black walls and cealing the projektor will show a grey aria being as black at is get, a Oled will more or less show nothing, totally blackness.
I think most projector buyers know this even thou there are some that try to pretend they can't see much difference. The projector bros just care about the size.
Like anything, there are tradeoffs. I spent a bunch of years using a projector with a high-gain screen (which has some but not all of the advantages of this sort of screen). Upsides were the comparably low price and the large size. I would have had to pay multiple times more to get a TV the same size as my projector setup. Downsides were contrast ratio (even an ALR screen will never be as good as an OLED unless your room is pitch black), warmup time (not just startup, but waiting for it to get up to temp so the brightness/focus are at their final levels), imperfect focus (perhaps mitigated by newer projectors, but adjusting focus required me to stand far enough away from the screen that I couldn't tell if it was perfectly focused or not), and ongoing maintenance costs (replacement projector bulbs cost a fortune and dust eventually got inside the light engine over the years). I moved to a modern OLED TV, and while I miss the larger projector screen size, I find myself using the TV way more than I used the projector because the TV is so much faster to get going and so much less hassle. That said, I'd still consider a projector setup in my current home if I had the money to spare for a high-end setup. A screen lowering from the ceiling in front of my TV, combined with a short-throw projector mounted on the ceiling above the couch? I could get a projector screen nearly 5x the surface area of my TV, more than making up for any of the shortcomings of a projector by just the sheer humungo size.
Have you seen BenQ’s newer projectors? I just saw one at my friends house who works for a distributor of theirs. It uses a new backlight which is LED and it has a much brighter perceived brightness than the older halide and other types of ballasted lamps. Which have a long warm up time and do have a shift in color temp as they’re coming up to operating temp. The new BenQ projector started up in a mere 10 or 15 seconds and was ready to go right then. Had great contrast on his screen. Don’t know if it was ALR as I just found out what they are in this video lol. But I was thoroughly impressed. As he has hidden the screen in a frame so well it looks like a TV. Because the contrast was so good it convinced me that I was looking at a regular TV until I asked him how big it was and he said 110 inches and that it could be even bigger if he got a bigger screen. That’s when it hit me it was a projector. Since I didn’t bother to look up at the ceiling before then. So with the modern technology bringing down prices on different options for lighting and materials for screens, these really are so good now that it’s almost indistinguishable from TV’s for nearly anyone who’s not extremely into critiquing picture quality and black levels. The sharpness was as good as any other 4K Tv I’ve ever seen as well even up close.
I knew it was "coming" as soon as I saw it the first time. I just can't believe it took you 6 minutes and 35 seconds to get there! Talk about staying power! 🤣 😂❤ Dang I freakin' love your videos. Oh and thanks now I want one of these screens. Impressive!
@@paulhibbert you do just make me laugh. I can see the joke coming and let’s face it, that build up and the. “Yea I know what’s coming” makes it all the funnier. I think your a genius personally. Like I said you should be on TV
Just bought the 120" long throw version of this, totally hidden behind a couch until it's turned on. No more "modern art" looking 120" permanent screen hung on the wall.
I have the Xiaomi "4k" UST projector (Make sure you get a screen that suits your style of projector!!) The ALR UST 100" screen from X-screens was (and still is) available for us$1000, although it's wall-framed, not an automatic thing like the one you show. I went for a 120" because I basically don't watch stuff during the day. But now my kid is home for summer and she tries watching during the day. Our living room is like a greenhouse so I can attest that a projector simply doesn't cut it unless you can block most of the windows. Even the backup TV is quite difficult to see. But from around twighlight the picture quality and brightness is amazing even at 120". With 100" screen that's literally 2/3 the size and thus 50% brighter, it would be bright enough for most peoples' living rooms, if only it meant having to close the curtains a little.
I tried to buy one of these just now after watching your video but the site keeps saying they won't ship to my location here in North Carolina. Would have loved having one...
how is it with the ceiling mount projector? Even if you get one designed for that, I’d guess it’d be no use with any ceiling lights on as they’d be too similar an angle? but maybe ok for proper ambient light?
Very nice demo thank you ! I love those ultra short laser projector and ALR screens technology but I am always concerned about the central speaker position when you have a 5,1 setup (?)

Once you realise that those things mean RUclips will show you to less people next week you start to obsess over those figures and depression shortly follows. Hi Paul, Loving the screen, a bit costly, but that is probably due to the motor and the mechanical system behind the screen holding it all in position. Nice short throw projector too. Really enjoyed the Vlog. Thank you.
Looks good. The problem I've always had with projectors is light control and fan noise. Is your projector silent? I ditched the projector in 2016 in favor of a 65 inch oled, but my wife still thinks that is a bit small! Some women are hard to satisfy, ahem!
For a minute, I thought it had the projector built in. I thought it being an all-in-one solution was absolutely cool. Oh well, maybe such a product will be made some day.
Intriguing but the quality of the projected image surely has a lot to do with the quality of the projector, a device which comes in various flavors. Perhaps the actual model projector wasn't mentioned because this video is a promo for the screen. All the same, it would be nice to know the spec for the projector being used to obtain the quality of the projected image while remaining silent on the manufacturer name. Other questions linger like a TV is designed for live broadcasts out of the box. To obtain that feature with a projector is doable for sure but more involved. At the end of the day, I'm wondering if I'd prefer a device I can just hang on the wall and it's ready to go without the addition and hassle of more devices.
You can tell how much enthusiasm Paul has for something he's reviewing and use that as a probabilistic indicator as to whether he's genuinely impressed or just shilling like some sort of Hibbert shill creature. The way to calculate his level of enthusiasm is by means of the HCF load the video carries. HCF of course being the "Hibbert Cackle Factor". The higher the HCF, the more enthused and the less shilling Paul is conveying. This method allows us to mathematically determine the level of Paul's sincerity. This video contains a record high level of HCF. It is thus completely genuine. 🤓
@@paulhibbert Lol, I know you haven't, but you did go to great lengths in this video to explain why you weren't being incentivized to shillery. Thanks for the mid-week video, I was surprised when it popped up on my feed. Pleasantly surprised. I'm considering doing something along these lines for my "man cave" later in this year or early next year. The fact that you approve of both this screen and the relatively low price of it would be a major factor if I decide to go ahead with the project. The fact that I know you don't really shill lends a great degree of confidence in your recommendations.
holy crap !! the idea of a usb dongle is genius. how the hell did i not think of that?! ik could make that with like an esp01 and have HA or whatever execute actions when it goes on/off-line.
They have a screen that has the reflectors facing a different direction for front throw. If I remember rightly it’s not quite as effective as UST but still a massive improvement. Worth googling to confirm
Genuinely interested in this tech but ideally would want the screen mounted from a ceiling to drop down, then could I fit surround speakers behind without affecting acoustic performance? We then need to move onto projector input lag for gaming, I'm certain projectors don't come close to say the likes of a modern LG OLED.
I have one, like yours with out a board/frame, love it but I miss the black frame..😬 At least the one I bought could not be with a frame couse the material was to thin and it would make the surface uneven. But it was/is the best option if you dont want to spend 4-5 times more and it still cost me 8000kr (about 750-800£)..😬👍
Since the surface has a side, I'm guessing this won't work if you hang it upside down? I like the idea of a clean living room so that means hanging the projector and screen from the ceiling, technically if both are hanging it should work right? Is this supported?
You've surmised correctly. They do drop down screens too though, so that would be what you would want, just make sure you pick the right one for whether you're using UST or ceiling mounted projector.
Seemed like every video had a neon purple or pink hue to it. Everything looked over saturated. Is this how it was in person or is it just how it was recorded?
So what exact model are you using, what's the difference in screen types, and maybe more information on pairing it up with what projectors would have been nice ?

I think import duty is a matter of incoterms... as you said they were giving you this for free, they probably shipped it DDP which means that they covered the import costs?

So in a totally light controlled room with black walls and cealing the projektor will show a grey aria being as black at is get, a Oled will more or less show nothing, totally blackness.
I think most projector buyers know this even thou there are some that try to pretend they can't see much difference. The projector bros just care about the size.
Is Tuesday the new midweek?
Omgosh❗ Keep the dad jokes and entendres comin'. Gets me crying laughing every time
Thank you so much. You R O C K
Thanks man! I count Tuesday night as mid-week. I actually count anything that isn't the weekend as mid-week because I'm bloody weird 😆
3 years ago I payed my 52” Smart TV from Samsung 330€. Works fine. Went on a holiday for the rest of the money. 😎😅
I knew it was "coming" as soon as I saw it the first time. I just can't believe it took you 6 minutes and 35 seconds to get there! Talk about staying power! 🤣 😂❤ Dang I freakin' love your videos. Oh and thanks now I want one of these screens. Impressive!
Haha, thanks mate! Hope I can keep you coming... Back for more videos.
Disgusting!
Paul , absolutely loving the mid week vids. I know you get grief over your characters, I bloody love them. There is not one I don’t like. 😊
Thanks man. I needed that this morning!
@@paulhibbert you do just make me laugh. I can see the joke coming and let’s face it, that build up and the. “Yea I know what’s coming” makes it all the funnier. I think your a genius personally. Like I said you should be on TV
@@lovellneil maybe one day the gadget show will change their mind. 😅
Thanks for the latest mid-week video! I am loving them!!
That ms dood! ❤️
I bought the Foremovie Theater and the same Vividstorm screen and it is fantastic! The remove USB dongle works great as well!
I'd mainly be scared of the motors breaking after a few years.
Excellent review, thank you!
Now do a side by side comparison with the 100” $32k TV! 😉
Just bought the 120" long throw version of this, totally hidden behind a couch until it's turned on. No more "modern art" looking 120" permanent screen hung on the wall.
How is the texture on the screen? Grainy or anything noticable?
@@justinbeamon6624 it's perfect, alr works amazingly well in daylight also.
My set up lives outside (so I can’t really use it until around 7pm) but I’m tempted by something like this just for nicer picture
I tried to buy one of these just now after watching your video but the site keeps saying they won't ship to my location here in North Carolina. Would have loved having one...
Which projector were you using in this video? You have a different one linked in the description.
XGIMI Aura
Truly impressive piece of kit, could be great for a commercial use in small event spaces
Definitely, if the room is lit from above then these would work great in a conference centre! xxx
@@paulhibbert Even at a gig I think it’d work, you could stream a camera straight to it
I love that!! Very cool idea. Xxx
@@paulhibbertset up for the next Sprocket gig…….xxx
how is it with the ceiling mount projector? Even if you get one designed for that, I’d guess it’d be no use with any ceiling lights on as they’d be too similar an angle? but maybe ok for proper ambient light?
Great, thanks bud, now I have no idea what day it is!!! Love you man
I had no idea what day it was today either, I forgot I'd even scheduled this, and now I know it's Tuesday 🤣
@@paulhibbert OK. I'll take you word for it bud
Very nice demo thank you ! I love those ultra short laser projector and ALR screens technology but I am always concerned about the central speaker position when you have a 5,1 setup (?)
Perforated ALR screen, problem solved
i really really like these more seriousish reviews with less editing. Still like your style but less script and less edit means more content and that's a good thing in me eyes :3
Thanks man! I wanna do more Wednesday videos and I think this works well. It was still tons of work, but less stress. It was a good balance I think ❤️
Amazing colors and really nice blocks. However.. I don't like how it's curved outwards. I'm used to screens being curved inwards.
Awwww no outcuts :( I absolutely love the look of this!!! Just renovating an apartment at the moment and might consider this for it!!!
Yeah, sadly RUclips is killing me at the moment, so I might have to cut back on outtakes, or find another way to include them. I worry they're hurting the average view duration as there is a drop off when my end speech starts.
@@paulhibbert ahhh that's bad, but understandable man, it is quite a large outro! Love the content, you put a lot of effort in, all of my light switches are smart because of you!!! (Broadlink 😉 )
@@paulhibbert it sucks that you have to stunt your creativity to satisfy the whims of an AI algorithm
@@blissweb tell me about it. I've been quite down about the whole thing recently. I got into this to make fun videos about technology, not to become a marketing strategist, and a social media analyst, and an accountant, and a Paralegal.
I've enjoyed learning new skills, but spending a full day every week finding SEO search terms, and researching how to make the perfect title and thumbnail, and reading contracts, and doing market research is horrible, especially when it doesn't always work out and you watch 40-60 hours of hard work actually end up hurting the channel.
11AM on a Saturday can be a really upsetting time when you open up the stats to find the words "fewer regular viewers are choosing to watch this video decreasing it's reach, consider changing the thumbnail and title", and "this video is currently 9th of the last 10 videos for number of hits in this time frame".
Once you realise that those things mean RUclips will show you to less people next week you start to obsess over those figures and depression shortly follows. It's been a tough month watching every metric head in the wrong direction because I don't know when it will stop dipping, and whether this is the beginning of the end of my RUclips career simply because I couldn't please a robot.
Hi Paul, Loving the screen, a bit costly, but that is probably due to the motor and the mechanical system behind the screen holding it all in position. Nice short throw projector too. Really enjoyed the Vlog. Thank you.
I will definitely sit here wondering: Is there a way to use Home Assistant and Switchbot to tie this new screen into your automations?
You could do it with a broadlink rm4 pro! ❤️
Everytime I turn my OLED TV & av equipment plus subs on with voice assistant my switchbot curtains close. All through if this then that app (ITTT)
Looks good.
The problem I've always had with projectors is light control and fan noise.
Is your projector silent?
I ditched the projector in 2016 in favor of a 65 inch oled, but my wife still thinks that is a bit small! Some women are hard to satisfy, ahem!
I'm sold. Looks great even at oblique angles.
For a minute, I thought it had the projector built in. I thought it being an all-in-one solution was absolutely cool. Oh well, maybe such a product will be made some day.
My local theater could learn a thing or 2 from this video.
@6m50s - Love the plastic tag still in the sleeve of the brand new shirt 😀
Not into tv . But your reviews are humorous and informative. Good work.
The way to go is a ust projector and an alr screen. Hisense do a package that includes both up to 120 inches
This is one of your best videos, Paul. Good work
I don't understand why brits walks around indoors on cozy soft carpets, with SHOES??! You wanna feel that coziness between your toes man.
Wow !!! I'm gobsmacked! I'd never even ehard of this technology, amazing black levels. Will buy one, liked and subbed :))
any idea if this will work outside? Working on a solution to display the F1 in the Garden so I can watch whilst enjoying my BBQ/Garden Bar.
Is there a difference compared to standard screen even in a dark room?
Superyacht owners will love this!
🤓
I have never shilled a single thing, the Hibbert cackle factor however is real!
Thanks dude! ❤️
Great video as always. Thank you.
With these collapsible screen, I wonder how they will age, just because there are so many moving parts in there.
holy crap !! the idea of a usb dongle is genius. how the hell did i not think of that?! ik could make that with like an esp01 and have HA or whatever execute actions when it goes on/off-line.
Great video - Would be keen to know how these screens perform with a nebula capsule 3 - does it have enough lumens ??
Ive been using a cheap temporary white screen for the past 5 years, this makes me want to upgrade
Great review. Can ALR screens be used with normal throw front projectors too? Or only UST projectors?
They have a screen that has the reflectors facing a different direction for front throw. If I remember rightly it’s not quite as effective as UST but still a massive improvement. Worth googling to confirm
What short throw projector do you recommend?
Side by side comparison is quite useful. Thankyou .
Projector recommendations?
Wicked review, thx dude.Deffo have a new supplier on my list thanks to you.
Can you hang this from the ceiling and mount the short throw projector on the ceiling?
Love the humor. Never stop.
Alright, another mid week vid. Look at you go Paul 👍🏼👍🏼
Is there a way to make it drop from the top down? I mean Can we hang it from the ceiling?
I have one, like yours with out a board/frame, love it but I miss the black frame..😬 At least the one I bought could not be with a frame couse the material was to thin and it would make the surface uneven. But it was/is the best option if you dont want to spend 4-5 times more and it still cost me 8000kr (about 750-800£)..😬👍
So will one of these screens work with a regular projector?
Since the surface has a side, I'm guessing this won't work if you hang it upside down? I like the idea of a clean living room so that means hanging the projector and screen from the ceiling, technically if both are hanging it should work right? Is this supported?
You've surmised correctly. They do drop down screens too though, so that would be what you would want, just make sure you pick the right one for whether you're using UST or ceiling mounted projector.
Are there any smaller screens? I want one for an RV and there isn't enough space anywhere for much more than 50"
Seemed like every video had a neon purple or pink hue to it. Everything looked over saturated. Is this how it was in person or is it just how it was recorded?
More ad-libs please!
As for the screen have you tried it outside in the garden for a summer cinema experience?
I haven't actually! Might try that as part of my outdoor smart home video!
Possible dumb question, but can this be mounted in the ceiling and go down vs up? Thanks for the video!
So can alr screens only be used with ust projectors shining up from below?
Great review Paul, and detailed information. Keep it up midweek.
Totally here for the dad jokes, especially one that made the lady call RUclips. 😆
what about a very dark room ? is the difference between the white screen and the ALR screen huge ?
The link to vividstorm contains many screens. Which one did YOU use for your video review?
How is using a USB and a remote to move the screen any different than using just a remote?
In fact you ve added a step?
I need the exact type you have. What is the name and specifications so I can get the exact one
Are ALRs only suitable for UST projectors or are they suitable for the traditional long throw projectors too?
Both, but you need to buy the right screen! One reflects light upwards, the other reflects the light downwards!
Alright the humor and more important tech demo got you a sub
Woohoo! Thank you! ❤️
So what exact model are you using, what's the difference in screen types, and maybe more information on pairing it up with what projectors would have been nice ?
Could have sworn that I told you I'm using an Xgimi Aura, and that these guys make different screens for ceiling mount versus UST. 🤔
LOVE this video. So many flat panel TV fans try to pull the "ambient light" card and forget about new projector and screen technologies. You, sir, get a thumbs up from me! ....maybe even a subscribe. GREAT VIDEO!!

Thanks dude! He's my favourite too, you're the first person to say so, so this made my day!
Excellent. I'll shortly be looking to buy a UST projector and screen so this is very useful, thank you. Thing is, I want to house it all in a discrete cabinet and have it all work with Alexa. Fancy a go at all that? Cheers mate much appreciated. 👍
As the screen goes taller than it needs to (it can be adjusted to stop lower) I think I would hide it behind the unit I put all my AV equipment in!
Short throw projector with an AVR cabinet. I wanted to do the same thing but where is the centre channel going to be positioned? I had compromises to make. The fact I'm only in a small little room and I wanted the middle of the OLED TV at the same height as my sitting position. This is what I ended up with...
ruclips.net/video/xvdqI5qZa6g/видео.html
honestly most of the $500+ projectors from aliexpress look great in the daylight and have done for the last 10 years. Yeah it looks a bit more washed out but you don't have to deal with reflections so I put it on the same level as a TV. THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING.... wow...
lol if you think a projector is as close to a modern TV you should get your eyes checked.
It's not even close to a decent TV.
OLED is the only way to go.
I love it so much. I am going to get rid of my crappie one I have now
For some reason I missed this video 😢 anyway...I didn't skip, I watched all of it till the end.
I think import duty is a matter of incoterms... as you said they were giving you this for free, they probably shipped it DDP which means that they covered the import costs?
They actually wrote into their contract that I would have to pay import duty! 🤣
@@paulhibbert Wasn't expecting a reply from the man himself! Well I suppose they're giving you a pretty sweet screen for free, I guess you can't moan if you got some fees! Maybe it really does come down to who got laid the night before then!! Keep up the good content!

Can an ultra short throw projector be mounted on the ceiling, along with this (or another) ALR screen?
