"He was bullied a lot at an early age and created an imaginary friend to support him called Cool Cat... At the age of 10 Derek got his first gun"... Wow, that escalated way too quickly
Firearms expert is a bit of a stretch imo. From what I saw on this video of him teaching somebody how to shoot, this man does not look even remotely close to being considered a firearms expert.
His constant rewriting of Cool Cat Saves The Kids reminds me of how I'd constantly rewrite my fanfics after not updating them for a few months. Legit the same vibe
Literally and the fact that the man is such a narcissist that he LEGIT believes that he was doing the right thing and that everyone else was wrong or lying is just bonkers, the only other people that i saw doing that kind of things were literal CHILDREN
So watching this, I just realized Derek took a photoshop edit I made of Cool Cat and used it as his cover for “Cool Cat Loves You” . I posted the original in 2015 on Tumblr.
LMFAO "He didn't want to hire him because he had a Scottish accent.... so, he went with the pornstar" is fucking straight out of a sitcom that is hilarious
The most tragic thing of this to me is that Derek speaks so passionately and get so excited when discussing his project - just a bit of reflection and kindness and it could have genuinely worked out and been wholesome
BRo that passion isn't for the "project" . He's speaking passionatly at the thought of enough of you simpletons buying this trash to lift him out of poverty and put him on the yacht h'es gonna buy with all that dough !
Many people either have a ton of creativity and talent but no drive and ability to network or what DD has: ZERO talent but a manic level of drive and an attempt to network with everybody. To be successful you need a healthy mix of the two.
I agree. It seems like he had good and wholesome goals, and his heart seemed to be in the right place, but he should have been the "idea guy" and had competent people implementing his ideas. Everyone has a different skill set - wholesome ideas are his, directing, acting, and producing not so much.
What's really sad was that he almost had a colt classic when the youtuber "I hate everything" and Meny others Reviewed it even I was interested but then they all got attacked really badly, This shows you how much ego plays a part too
Oh yeah Derek Smart is a fruitcake. Oh wait different Derek. Never mind. (Look that one up... still the longest flame war in internet history... still ongoing too.)
it's funny how Derek's definition of a "nice E-mail" is something that could be easily summed up as: "comply with my illogical bullshit or sleep with the fishes."
The man is completely delusional to think PewDiePie or any other self respecting RUclipsr would want to have anything to do with him. Especially after treating Mumkey Jones like shit. I'm really hoping this disgusting pos runs out of money completely so he can't produce anymore of his grifting garbage
Not to mention Derek is ignoring some of the more...how you say, "not child-friendly" things that PDP has been a part of. Idk if you want parents finding out that the guy in the movie that them and their kids are watching has said some awful shit. But Derek prob wouldn't care lol
He's an asshole, but I can't help but feel kinda sorry for him, he seems like someone who dreams so much bigger than he can realistically achieve and is so passionate about his work, but you can tell that he begins trying so hard to keep his spirits up despite nothing ever working out for him. And he blames everyone else for his own failings because I think he knows he's never going to go anywhere with this and he can't come to terms with that.
I pity him, but I have a hard time feeling any sympathy. He was bullied in school, and instead of growing from it he decided to bully others to get his way. Many people, myself included, had rough childhoods. As an adult, personally I believe you're responsible for your actions regardless of where you come from. While I certainly admire his ability to dream big, I take issue with his inability to either accept any valid criticism or accept the opportunities he's been presented because they don't fit his rigid definitions of "success". I feel bad he was bullied, but he's become a bit of a bully himself and refuses to accept any responsibility for his own failings.
Well the thing with him is he had a good concept and a good character. His main problem is he's too weird and crazy to get out of his own way. Inserting himself into his show to be the...husband of a anthropomorphic cat? Having all his characters call him "Daddy Derrick? The off the wall topics like an episode with a school shooting? The guy has no sense of a good or bad idea.
Derek blew it. He could have been as loved and respected as Neil Breen if he didn’t put his foot in it or treat people like shit. Now he’s just a laughing stock.
A big ego like Breen's causes you to make yourself the Gary Stu main character of every film you make, a narcissist like Savage thinks kids need to learn how to flip houses, because Derek Savage is flipping houses and everything Derek Savage likes- kids need to learn about. The first example is sad, but harmless. The second is a sign of a far deeper issue.

You should think again what is considered a help. These hate themed videos making fun on other's mental issues and bully oriented content isn't helping anyone. Videos like these should not exist on the internet, should not have half a mil or millions of following and any support whatsoever. Channels like this one is making money on other's misfortune.
Derek is clearly a bit of an insane man. Passionate, but very misguided and stuck in his own ways. He's the Chris Chan of Hollywood, constantly chasing unrealistic opportunities.
I think that’s what makes it most difficult for me to _hate_ him. While he is shady and hypocritical, he sincerely doesn’t come off like he possesses the mental capacity to _understand_ that he’s shady and hypocritical. It’s literally a consistent pattern in his films that he forgets his own lessons mere moments after explaining them, and this is reflected by his behavior in real life. I don’t necessarily blame anyone for seeing malice, but I mostly just see stupidity. A deliberate con-man would’ve moved on to other ventures by now, but he’s stuck with the Cool Cat brand all this time under the delusion that people actually unironically like it and that he has a shot at getting picked up by a major distributor. This simply isn’t a man who’s firing on all cylinders.
I think that unlike Chris Chan, nobody has really benefited from Derrick’s name being well known. (I am of the opinion that Chris Chan would’ve ended up diddling a kid if left unchecked)
Derek's the kinda guy to invite you over for dinner, wander in and out of the kitchen while talking about how great the food's gonna be, and end up never serving you.
Man I thought this saga ended ages ago, had NO IDEA about the controversies after IHE's interaction. Derek had so many chances to be a better person only to continue repeating the same mistakes. Not even surprised he did nfts.
The irony of a 3 hour documentary on Cool Cat when Daddy Derek has never completed anywhere near 3 hours of Cool Cat movie or tv footage in nearly 10 years
Have you guys ever noticed how people who are obsessed with their own creations usually create trash, whereas true artists are constantly criticizing and second guessing themselves?
That is called the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Someone who doesn't know much about art isn't good enough to pick fault in it, meaning they think what they do is incredible, even if it's unacceptably bad - they literally can't see the flaws in their own work. Through not taking the time to learn, they never compare themselves to actually good people either, so they assume they're better than they are. A good artist who knows art can better point out flaws in their own abilities, and compare themselves to better artists through their learning, so they don't have that same unabashed confidence.
Exactly. And all these mannerisms as well as his twangy voice quickly became irritating to listen once you got his vicious pattern that made him having all these controversies. ^^'
The most shocking thing is that he got Vivica A Fox, Erik Estrada, an Emmy nominated editor and an entire production crew to sign onto a shoot using a script w fucking spelling and grammatical errors
i feel bad for the guy wearing the cool cat costume that didn’t get paid (or not paid enough) for attending events and such. imagine sweating your balls off all day in a giant orange cat suit with people actively avoiding you. that can’t be good for your mental health.
side note (i’m on mobile so i can’t edit my comment) when i was a boyscout in 8th grade when i was 12 and they would kick you out if you weren’t holding your gun toward the ground without a hand anywhere near the trigger even if it wasn’t loaded. i’m well in my 30s and have fired guns with my friends drunk as hell and never had an incident anywhere near what that lady did when she had a hot shell go down her shirt.
It's impressive just how consistently he's managed to muck up his "rise to fame". He could have made a healthy living making those if he could just take criticism. He hit the jackpot when all the movie reviewers discovered his first movie, but it was all downhill from there.
I remember being 15 and pissed off when Derek went after I Hate Everything for his Cool Cat review, it was a complete shock to the entire community. He threatened to doxx him and cemented himself as a complete tool.
@Future Pants It was a little bit more than that and quite out of context. He stated it more like, "if people like doing that, it's their business, I do not care for it or judge them because it has nothing to do with me" kind of way he explained it. But as usual, the people of the internet can only think in black or white mentality, so if you not 100% state you are against it in clear letters, you are their enemies.
Seeing Derek in the Cool Cat suit felt like seeing the final decent into a man's insanity. I need to see a whole 30 minutes of Derek as Cool Cat. Imagine Derek trying to do Cool Cat, camera work everything because no one wants to work with him.Seeing him starting the camera and running slightly out of shot and being slightly out of frame and saying whatever crappy script he wrote. Hell, I could see him putting on a wig and pretending to be a child.
I’d personally fund an entire video of him playing every single character lol. Seeing him in a wig and playing, like, a 6 year old girl would be hilarious.

The funniest shit to me was Derek failing to hook up with the woman who played the mom cat. When the actor who played cool cat went over to her house to take shower after sweating in the suit all day. Derek ran into her house, without permission, he trespassed into this woman’s house, to berate them about having an “affair”. Which is crazy because they weren’t dating. Neither he nor the actor who played cool cat were dating that woman, she was just trying to be kind and cut him some slack on a hot day. The guy is seriously unhinged, his speech impediment makes listening to him feel uncomfortable. I mean, “Poo die pie”, “John Duvulta” He just needs to stop.
I mean I’m not going to knock someone for how thick their accent is or if they have a speech impediment. But Derek is really unhinged, unpredictable. Dude really needs help.
fun fact. He sent the Saves the Kids director's cut to Rev, a freelance captioning site, for closed captions. and I was previously a captioner through them. when the stars aligned and I saw it pop up in the queue I could NOT have snatched the project up quicker. I knew only a fan could do it honor. also the home renovation shots all felt just exceptionally coked up lol
I met him once. He was just hanging out inside a Costco writing a script, I had to do a double take to make sure it was him and it was. I had some small talk with him and he was telling me about the new Cool Cat movie he was writing (this was a couple years back, but around the time after he made the copyright strikes against IHE and Bobsheaux) and he also talked to me about his Kickstarter to fund his next movie. To this day, I still can't believe I met him and he's just like how he is in his videos.
It's strange how Chris makes Sonichu call him Mama and Derick makes Cool Cat call him Daddy. I feel like when someone makes their fictional character refer to them as a parental figure, then that person is on the path of becoming a lolcow.
He was on the path to becoming a self-aware and amusing figure, then started reacting to criticism the way a lolcow would. When I saw those conspiratorial tweets about IHE, I knew how we was going to be viewed by the internet from this point forward.
Like the saga of the Savage himself. You think he's finally gonna quit, but nope, spins something else from his rear and puts it out online for consumption. Damn.
Well, he made (an awful, but still) webcomic and I read somewhere that the only reason it was a comic and not an animation was because Chris didn't know how to animate at the time (and likely still doesn't know).
Fake it until you make it, but I think Derek has some sort of mental condition not to recognize that at 60 years old this shit doesn't work. Think about it, the guy works out of a closet, wears the same 3 shirts in every video, and I wouldn't be surprised if he rented a bedroom instead of owning a house.
He's like a Chris-Chan with more reach, sans the virgin rage. Then again, given the allegations of general sleaziness with his female collaborators, that might not be far off either.
it feels surreal to me that this man is still DOING THINGS. After the initial drama with IHE and YMS I totally forgot he existed. Hearing that he's still up to the same old shit and talking about things like Corona Virus and the Depp/Heard trial doesn't sit right. This man is forever stuck in 2015(or whenever the drama was) to me and I wish that's where he stayed.
Just you wait. Darrick is going to get his Cool Cat projects off the ground one day and it's success will rival that of Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants. I think Cool Cat will out shine all media created before it and create a new gold standard for cinema and childrens entertainment. Mark my words Daddy Darrick's films and techniques will be studied in film school for the next century.
I sometimes forget about the amount of time that's passed since I first learned about Cool Cat. I've been following the Daddy Derek chronicles on and off since I was in middle school so I get a weird nostalgic feeling every time this guy pops up again.
In the cool cat wiki article for "Cool Cat Fights Corona Virus" one of the trivia points is: "Cool Cat Fights Coronavirus is the first ever film to end with a giant talking dog declaring he's going to shoot up a school." and I just think Derek deserves the credit he's due for that.
I love that he constantly claims he's "in contact" with all these big celebrities and acts like he's friends with them. Literally anyone can get into contact with a celebrity's agent. It doesn't mean you're in talks with them or that they're considering the role.
I lost it when you stated that the lady who voiced Momma Cat and Derek had issues backstage because he kept asking her out. I can see him being super pushy with that.
If there’s an ending alignment chart for internet autism, Chris Chan is the bad ending, this is the neutral ending (probably undiagnosed), and we have yet to see the good ending.
This is a really great video . Watching this I'm reminded of the time I used to work as a children's illustrator and something that I had to interact with quite frequently were people who wanted to sell a product but didn't particularly care whether or not said product was appealing visually at all. They would capitalize on things like bullying and even religion, but at the end of the day what they really wanted was money. More than anything they just wanted a product and they really didn't necessarily care that much about whether or not the product was actually good.... I thought that when you showed the poster and it was just so ugly and very obviously something that he created really quickly in MS paint.
He seems like a textbook narcissist to me. I'm convinced he really does think that he's being altruistic, and is simply fooling himself as much as he's fooling everybody else. But he's never going to realize that.
Reminds me of a lot of bad kids series you would see on RUclips Kids like from Cocomelon. Not the same degree as Derek and the examples you brought up, but the visuals speaks how cynical and capitalists they are beneath the colorful yet soulless surface.
The reason they stopped doing the “stranger danger” thing with kids is because in hindsight it proved to be the worst advice for kids because most victims know their abuser.

hes one of these people who i refer to as "cloud castle builders". basically they are bursting with ideas that seem amazing and revolutionary to them, and they spend all their time staring and admiring the ideas in their heads from one specific angle. they rarely want any criticism, and often they cannot even comprehend why they would need it, because in their heads the idea seems flawless. they always keep their ideas so dear to them, that any criticism feels like a direct attack at them. and usually they are so deep in their daydreams about their ideas that they cannot take a step back, and consider how realistic this would be to make reality, and would anyone else enjoy it as it is. they tend to be some of the most imaginative people on the world, but absolute nightmare to work with, since they only want to bring their idea to this word without understanding that its missing half of the pieces, and even then is just not anything even remotely realistic to accomplish.
Indeed ... and the parallels between Derek and the "legendary" Ed Wood are ... extremely parallel :) (kind of ironic he's desperate to cast Johnny Depp - who once played Ed Wood - in one of his films) ;)

this actually makes me feel pity for the guy. when he describes his ideas, he sounds so genuine, completely blind to his inaptness. He behaved shitty a lot of times but I really believe he wants to create good stuff.
I actually suspect that urge to create "good stuff" is mitigated by his narcissism and inability to take criticism. Making "educational" children's content is one of those jobs where the quality of your work isn't quite as important as just doing. What I mean is, someone like Derek can make absolutely atrocious children's content and when people criticize the quality or efficacy of his work, Derek can say, "Well at least I'm doing SOMETHING, what are you doing to help the kids?!" Rather than trying to create good stuff, I think Derek is just trying to make stuff - stuff that ends up *seeming* good simply because its stated goal is to educate kids. I could be wrong.
Heavens, the Cool Cat "hip hop" bit in the "kids' superhero" was cringe as all hell. DS talks too damned slow with his articulation too thick generally to make that work, like he's got peanut butter stuck to his tongue. It made it sound clumsy as hell. And I don't even listen to hip hop much, but you gotta have a rhythm and the ability to not trip over your own tongue when you're singing it. DS definitely shouldn't sing anything close to what he thinks hip-hop and rap are.
Everything this guy does is criminally cringe, but hearing that "rap" nearly sent me into cardiac arrest. Maybe this guy is secretly the lord of all trolls.

Cool Cat could’ve been an actual helpful childrens book, and I feel like a little cartoon for it would definitely have kids enticed. Too bad Derek had no idea what he was doing.

He’s never said it outright, but he seems to be some type of libertarian. He talks about guns and weed a lot, and has gotten that one Libertarian vice presidential candidate to help with his book on marijuana.

Fantastic job. Very much enjoyed watching it. So in-depth. I completely forgot about the limo scene. That was his former agent/former landlord's side hustle. Not uncommon, in my experience. In college, I had an elderly professor who was a short man from a working-class part of England. He experienced a lot of discrimination and harassment as a young man because of his social class and physical size. As a professor here in the US, he had tenure in two departments and had lots of important friends and allies. He was known for harassing female students and trans students. Specifically, hitting on female students and asking trans students about their genitals. I was a naive autistic idealist as a student. I often thought that if I confronted someone directly about their hurtful behavior, they might change. One class, he called a female trans student "sir" for the second or third time, and she stormed out of the room. I spoke to him after class and told him that it was very hurtful to her to be misgendered. "How would you feel if someone called you 'ma'am'?" "I would take it as a joke," he replied. "Well, it's not a joke to her. You need to call her 'ma'am' and 'she/her.'" "Oh no! I can't censor myself like that!" When he was bullied as a young man, it wasn't a joke. But when he bullies his own students, they should take it as a joke. And it isn't about him taking responsibility for his behavior as a powerful older adult in a position of authority. It's about other people trying to censor and control him.
Some people who were victimized early in life hold on to that victim narrative. They can spin any situation so that they are the victim, never the bully.
I mean, look alone at all the bitter gen x and boomers who are like "no, I don't want this motion to pass that would make life better for other people, I had to go through it, so do they" When you faced hardships or similar, you either take it to try to have other people not face what you did because you know how much it hurt you, or you become bitter and want everyone else to suffer as much as you did.@@janeeyre1990
I like to think Derek’s characters are his split personalities. Cool Cat is his fun-loving, childlike side and his ideal best friend. Dirty Dog is his evil side who seeks revenge on those who have wronged him and Beaver is the timid voice of reason who’s being subdued or “enslaved” by Dirty Dog.
Now you've got me thinking that DS could re-work his "Sweet Revenge" novel into a comic and have Dirty Dog as the leader of the gang and Cool Cat as the vigilante avenging his family. Oh, dear...
That's a headcanon, at least. I learned about this guy before I got my adult autism diagnosis. I'm watching this guy like 3 years after I got it, and it's nagging me, with this obsession he has with Cool Cat, that he might be it too. I can see me in him with how eager I was to make audioplays back a decade ago, wanting to get All The Big People In My Projects.
My own thoughts on this matter put into words. I agree completely with your analysis....
Well the thing with him is he had a good concept and a good character. His main problem is he's too weird and crazy to get out of his own way.

What about creators who do a little bit of both?
Now that you mention it, you do have a point.

The school shooting happening and him immediately jumping on the news cycle and pumping out a Cool Cat product 2 days later really shows your point.

The reason they stopped doing the “stranger danger” thing with kids is because in hindsight it proved to be the worst advice for kids because most victims know their abuser.
Yes true, with child rape it almost always happens from a family member or family friend. But there is a good chance of a lunatic man doing something bad like that

hes one of these people who i refer to as "cloud castle builders". basically they are bursting with ideas that seem amazing and revolutionary to them, and they spend all their time staring and admiring the ideas in their heads from one specific angle. they rarely want any criticism, and often they cannot even comprehend why they would need it, because in their heads the idea seems flawless. they always keep their ideas so dear to them, that any criticism feels like a direct attack at them. and usually they are so deep in their daydreams about their ideas that they cannot take a step back, and consider how realistic this would be to make reality, and would anyone else enjoy it as it is.
they tend to be some of the most imaginative people on the world, but absolute nightmare to work with, since they only want to bring their idea to this word without understanding that its missing half of the pieces, and even then is just not anything even remotely realistic to accomplish.
And, adding onto your excellent analogy, if they DO happen to build it, it often drifts apart on the breeze

Indeed ... and the parallels between Derek and the "legendary" Ed Wood are ... extremely parallel :) (kind of ironic he's desperate to cast Johnny Depp - who once played Ed Wood - in one of his films) ;)
Having Cool Cat refer to him as "daddy" really reminds me of Sonichu referring to Chris Chan as "father."

Cool Cat is Daddy Derek's Sonichu. Daddy Derek is Chris with less bigotry and more self sufficient.
this actually makes me feel pity for the guy. when he describes his ideas, he sounds so genuine, completely blind to his inaptness.
What I mean is, someone like Derek can make absolutely atrocious children's content and when people criticize the quality or efficacy of his work, Derek can say, "Well at least I'm doing SOMETHING, what are you doing to help the kids?!"
Rather than trying to create good stuff, I think Derek is just trying to make stuff - stuff that ends up *seeming* good simply because its stated goal is to educate kids. I could be wrong.
The Dirty Dog rap has me in tears. The sheer lack of rhythm or rhyme is borderline shocking despite the bar being so low

Ironic, the man made a anti bully series only to become a bully himself, food for thought.
"How would you feel if someone called you 'ma'am'?"
"I would take it as a joke," he replied.
"Well, it's not a joke to her. You need to call her 'ma'am' and 'she/her.'"
"Oh no! I can't censor myself like that!"
When he was bullied as a young man, it wasn't a joke.
