  • In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) between Graz and the Austrian capital Vienna (Wien) via the Pottendorfer line in 4K/60 frames per second.
    One of the busiest railway routes in Austria, it takes us from Graz, the second-largest city to the capital city of Vienna on the route of the historic southern railway mainline (Südbahn) completed in 1854 between Vienna and Graz, stretching further to Ljubljana (Laibach) in Slovenia and Zagreb (Agram) in Croatia.
    A two-and-a-half-hour journey from Graz to Vienna leads us along the river Mur valley to the major railway junction of Bruck an der Mur. Following the river Mürz the journey leads us up and across the Semmering mountain pass along UNESCO World Heritage Semmering railway (Semmeringbahn). Built in the mid-19th century and made up of 26 miles (41 km) of tunnels and viaducts, it represents one the most impressive feats of civil engineering in the era of early railway construction. In the last part of the journey, from Wiener Neustadt Hbf to Vienna we pass along the Pottendorfer line.
    A major upgrade of the line is happening, with a new Semmering Base Tunnel (basis tunnel) being built to replace the winding Semmering railway with the 27,3 kilometre tunnel, capable of speeds up to 250km/h, that when completed in 2030, will reduce the travel time between Mürzzuschlag and Gloggnitz from 45 minutes today to just 15 minutes, also bringing down the journey between Vienna and Graz to under two hours on flagship Railjet service.

    As always, a perfect video. While we previously had the southern railway (Südbahn) including the Semmering route in the summer, this time we will see it in the winter in snow and cold. The journey over the new double-track Pottendorf line has been staged for the first time. With the other films about the Inntalbahn, the Arlbergbahn, the Karwendelbahn, the Kaiserin-Elisabeth-Westbahn, the Ostbahn, the Tauernbahn, the Brennerbahn, the Archduchess-Gisela-Bahn including the Ennstalbahn and parts of the Kronprinz-Rudolph-Bahn, we already have a nice insight into the main railway lines in Austria. A few important ones are still missing, such as the Pyhrnbahn, the Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Bahn, the Kaiser-Ferdinand-Nordbahn, the Nordostbahn, the Passauer Bahn, the Vorarlbergbahn, the rest of the Rudolfsbahn and very, very many branch lines. But that will come!

    BTW, the expansion of the Pottendorf Line has brought a four-track system between Wiener Neustadt and Wien Meidling. The around 50-kilometre-long line between Wiener Neustadt 02:00:02 and Wien Meidling 02:23:06 has been double-tracked, mostly during ongoing operations. As captured by the cab ride video, the Pottendorf Line serves perfectly as a parallel supplementary and alternative line for the crowded Southern Railway Line. Once the last section of the Pottendorf Line is ramped up at the end of 2024, it will allow a higher frequency of trains and an expansion of the timetables in the morning and in the evening. This benefit is also important for those who use the train for their daily commute by enabling faster, more direct journeys between Wiener Neustadt (railway hub) and Wien (Vienna) or vice versa. During working days, trains dedicated to long distance services are usually packed with passengers. A great number of them are leaving the trains after less than half an hour's ride, in order to catch their commuter trains or join the city transport.

    And finally the Southern Railway! This part is only the last fastest part of the tortuous route that led from Vienna to Trieste, via Graz-Maribor-Ljubljana. The first real railway line passing through many important cities, which has now fallen into somewhat of a decline, replaced by the Rudolphsbahn! But the route along the Mur up to Bruck an der Mur is always fascinating! Then there's the Semmering! And what do you want to tell him! Railway paradise in Austria! The section from Gloggnitz onwards until a few months ago was still single track and they were fixing it! I see they have also reactivated the second track! Wiener Neustadt is like Sankt Polten, the most important city in the south of Lower Austria, but unlike the capital, it is also a railway hub especially for the GYSEV and MAV lines to Hungary and nearby Sopron. I didn't know the Pottendorfer line! Is it a new variant? Good, come on! As always, nice video!

    • @RailRelaxation
      @RailRelaxation  3 месяца назад +1

      @wladislaw79 I believe that the Pottendorfer line will be the high speed line and the plan is to have a four-track southern line between Vienna and Wr. Neustadt.

    • @TheTornado121
      @TheTornado121 2 месяца назад +2

      Gloggnitz to Wiener Neustadt has been single track due to construction work. In the last years there were quite a few upgrades, like renovation of Ternitz and substructure improvement between Wiener Neustadt and Neunkirchen.
      MAV is not operating in Wiener Neustadt, only GYSEV.
      The Pottendorfer Linie is a pretty old line (about 150 years) but has only recently been upgraded to a high speed line. Wiener Neustadt to Wampersdorf has been a double track line since the 1980s. The section Wampersdorf to Vienna just followed in December 2023.

      They don't usually, maybe it was some work on the Sudbahn so they re-routed them this way. Though Pottendorfer line (when all work gets finished) will be maybe even a better and faster way into the city so perhaps in the future some/most/all Railjets might take this route as this line is upgraded to increase the capacity to/from Vienna to south.

      ÖBB Press Release 18.12.23: Die Südbahn über Mödling und Baden ist an ihrer Kapazitätsgrenze angelangt. Um auch Fernverkehrszüge wie den Railjet möglichst schnell zwischen Wien und Wiener Neustadt führen zu können, ist eine zweigleisige Pottendorfer Linie erforderlich - bisher fuhren Fernverkehrszüge hauptsächlich auf der Südbahn, da die Kapazität auf der Pottendorfer Linie durch die Eingleisigkeit dafür nicht ausreichte. Durch eine jetzt mögliche Verlagerung des Fernverkehrs auf die Pottendorfer Linie werden auf der Südbahn Zug um Zug Trassen frei, um langfristig mehr Nahverkehrszüge für Pendler:innen und Schüler:innen führen zu können. Damit profitieren die bevölkerungsstarken Orte zwischen Wien, Mödling, Baden und Wiener Neustadt.

    Why is this train driving at the left track until Bruck an der Mur and afterwards changing tot the right track ?

    • @stephanweinberger
      @stephanweinberger 3 месяца назад +7

      Historic reasons.
      The first double-track lines in Austria were built for left-hand driving (following the British example). During the 3rd Reich period they began to change it to driving on the right side, like in Germany - but for well known reasons this project was never finished; and after the war we had other priorities. So the network remained a mix of lefthand and righthand driving on different lines for several decades. Only in the 1990s, with the start of a major refurbishment of the rail network, the project of standardization was continued.
      Today the Südbahn south of Bruck an der Mur is the last remaining section where we drive on the left side. This is scheduled to change to righthand operation when the Koralmbahn line between Graz and Klagenfurt fully opens in late 2025.
      In practice it doesn't really matter though, as all lines in Austria are fully/equally signaled for running in both directions (in contrast to many other countries, where the signalling is often not symmetric and running on the wrong side can therefore be a significant inconvenience with lower capacity). I.e. operationally all double-track (or quad-track) lines in Austria are basically just two (or four) single rail lines that 'happen to run parallel'. And the dispatchers also make creative use of this to maximize capacity & throughput, so you very regularly see trains running on the "wrong" side to eg. pass slower trains on-the-fly.
      The preferred side is more or less just a convention nowadays; the only real manifestation is platform signage ("trains to ...").

      @stephanweinberger 3 месяца назад +2

      @@atfundum btw. it was the same mess (actually an even bigger one) on Austrian roads 🙂
      There was absolutely no consistency, and basically the preferred side changed with every land/duchy/dukedom in the realm. Only after the Napoleonic wars the Austro-Hungarian-Empire finally decided to generally drive on the left - except for the Crown land Tyrol (which at the time included Vorarlberg). In 1915 the whole Habsburg empire was changed to lefthand driving, but this faced heavy opposition in Vorarlberg, which historically had much closer ties to Germany and Switzerland and wasn't really connected to the rest of Austria by good roads. So they were allowed to change back to righthand in 1921. But only a few years later in 1929 the Austrian parliament decided to convert everything to righthand by 1932 (following a recommendation of the League of Nations from 1927). In practice though, the plan was repeatedly delayed and only implemented in multiple stages until 1938 (shifting the border between righthand and lefthand driving eastwards every couple of years).
      So in some regions the preferred side changed up to 3 times within just 25 years!

    The Pottendorfer Line perfectly demonstrates everything thats wrong with modern planing: you have all this fancy infrastructure in the middle of nowhere, because politicians seem to think you need tons of parking spaces. But when you actually encourage people to take their cars to the station, why would they go to the station and not just go directly to wherever they want to go?

    • @ZvonimirZelenika
      @ZvonimirZelenika 3 месяца назад +7

      I think main goal with Pottendorfer line is to utilize it as faster way to get long-distance trains into Vienna, as even where it used to go through some of the towns (Ebreichsdorf) it was rerouted to by-pass it to be as direct as possible and be ready for higher speeds (I see 200km/h being mentioned as well). This area is far less populated than the route of the Sudbahn, so I do expect that this line will primarily handle long-distance trains, to open up capacity for local/regional trains on Sudbahn. Not sure if some additional speed improvements from Blumental to Meidling are possible without some major tunneling as these station access is where quite a lot of time gets lost. Also, interesting trip from Meidling to Hbf, on the south side of the whole Matzleinsdorf facility.

    • @heinerle456
      @heinerle456 3 месяца назад +5

      To whom it may concern: Park&Ride is generally a cheaper option than city parking in Vienna. And in addition too, well-connected and highly accessible P&R as it is offered at stations alongside the Pottendorf Line eliminates the time-consuming process of finding parking spaces in the crowded districts of Vienna. This benefit is also important for those who use P&R for their daily commute.

    • @lordeisschrank
      @lordeisschrank 3 месяца назад +5

      @@heinerle456 the point is rather that P&R shouldn't have to exist in the first place if stations were built in city centers. I realize that this specific line would not be able to serve this specific purpose, BUT lots of other lines could. Most of the swiss videos here demonstrate that perfectly, there is way less of a separation of trains and other modes of transport. many trains simply turn into trams with sometimes multiple stops if they go into or through a bigger town - thats the way it should be done. So people can walk to the station and arent incentivized to drive for what? 1km at best? complete lunacy

    • @heinerle456
      @heinerle456 3 месяца назад +1

      @@lordeisschrankThe around 50-kilometre-long Pottendorf Line serves perfectly as a parallel supplementary and alternative line for the Southern Railway Line and will allow a higher frequency of trains and an expansion of the timetables in the morning and in the evening. This benefit is also important for those who use the train for their daily commute by enabling faster, more direct journeys between Wiener Neustadt (railway hub) and Vienna or vice versa. BTW, the Badner Bahn perfectly represents the simple turn of trains into trams in the metropolitan area of Vienna.
