  • In this video, we're looking at the InterCity route between 2 popular Swiss cities with the tourists - Zürich, Switzerland's largest city and Lucerne, a city on a lake preceding the alps.
The original line between Zürich and Luzern was actually routed via Affoltern am Albis to Zug, one we have looked at before. At that time, Zug was a terminus station like Zürich and Lucerne still are, which required a change of direction to reach Lucerne.
Note the right hand curve after we leave Zug. The straight section after that curve formerly continued behind us to what was the terminus station. To assist in turning trains, the loop track labelled after leaving Zug was at that time not a loop, rather a track where trains could reverse left into from the terminus, then pull forwards towards Lucerne and reverse back into the station.
When the line was built between Zug and Arth-Goldau in 1897, the loop was made and the station shifted to where it is now. The loop served to connect the line from Arth-Goldau with Lucerne as well as Zürich via Affoltern am Albis. It was taken out of service in 1990. All trains to Lucerne from the south were now forced to take the Gotthard line until Immensee or Rotkreuz, where lines branched off towards Lucerne, and trains towards Zürich would continue via Thalwil.
This video is a little different in that the camera was mounted outside of the cab - the main difference being the sound and lack of window reflections. Let me know your thoughts on what you prefer.

It's interesting to see how the control cabs on these push-pull trains, both the single and double-deck versions, are styled to look exactly like the RE460 locomotive that's attached at the other end.
At 45:00, as we drive along the Rotsee, there is a farm building on the hill on the right. This is where i used to stay with my father, a rowing journalist, when there were championships on the lake. The farm had an old storage building, and on the top floor was basically a furniture storage. Both sides of the central pathway were lined with beds including mattresses, so we could simply choose any one of them to put our sleeping bags on. there was only a single light, no heating, and for shower and toilet we had to walk 200 meters to the barn where the cows stayed. I've got very fond memories of those times. On the left side of the track is the dock for the small ferry that crosses the lake whevener there are customers. Because the lake is a protected area, this small boat is the only powered vehicle allowed on the lake, outside of rowing contests.

And, seeing that the train was generating a headwind of up to 140 km/h, your mic did a truly splendid job. I support your trial of camera placement; steel wheel on steel rail is never silent.
    Cheers from Australia.

started watching your videos 3 years ago, best cab videos i've ever seen! I like the camera out of the cab but it would be nice to put a windshield for the noise from the mic (or record the sounds from inside the cab and record the image from outside, that could also work). it is also nice that you add details in your videos (speeds, names, routes etc.), great work, looking forward for more journeys!!👍👍🌏

The video is excellent! But Switzerland is making a big mistake of adding sound-protection barriers _too liberally._ This destroys the passenger experience. I noticed them suddenly popping up everywhere along the Luzern - Lugano line (through Airolo)and it's _really_ bad. And I won't even mention they are a magnet for graffiti vandals.

I really like your addition of details about each segment of the line in the upper rightand corner of the video. The history of each line is especially interesting. I'm assuming that prior to the inauguration of the Thalwil-Zug line in 1897 that the only semi-direct route from Zürich to Luzern was via Altstetten-Affoltern am Albis-Zug?

    • @lorirocks777

    1. Gibt es eine (technische) Systematik in der Nutzung der Eisenbahnschwellen (Holz/Beton/Eisen/...) und
    2. Wie werden die Gleisbetten (Gleisbeete?...) gepflegt, im Sinne von (zeitlich kontrollierter) Maintenance? Diese Frage vor dem Hintergrund des Unglücks Sommer 2022 bei Garmisch!
    3. Wieso ist die Steigungsangabe (3:39; 3%o Steigung) für den Lokführer derart wichtig, dass selbst so kleine Steigungen signalisiert werden?
    Ansonsten, Weiter so! Gxxxx Videos!!!

    • @lorirocks777
      @lorirocks777  Год назад +1

      1. Beton wird meistens verwendet. Holzschwellen werden meistens auf Brücken und teilweise in Tunneln verbaut. Eisenschwellen leben am längsten und werden für Abstellgleisen und gewisse Strecken gebraucht. Mehr infos finden Sie auf Wikipedia.
      3. Angezeigte Steigungen sind vorallem für Dampffahrten wichtig, sie sind aber auch allgemein praktisch zu haben. Wenn man einen Zug mit 2500t hat, machen 3 Promille auf einmal viel aus. Zusätzlich weiss man im Falle eines Problems, wie viele Handbremsen anzuziehen sind aufgrund vom Zuggewicht und Gefälle.

I'm afraid that the wind noise on the recording is very loud, and this spoils the viewing experience considerably. If you mount the camera outside the cab, you MUST cover the microphone with a furry windshield. A smooth, foam one - like that used on TV news interview microphones (the handheld type) - is no good because its smooth outer surface means that the air just rushes over it, and all you hear is the noise made by that air movement. A furry windshield disrupts and diffuses the movement of the air, keeping it away from the microphone and virtually eliminating wind noise. Just a tip from years of experience!

@86caw Agreed. The sonic wind burn imparts a lulling white noise effect that enhances the relaxing effect of the experience, if the sound level is manually lowered a bit.

Yeah. When I drive a commuter there for the first time, I almost missed the 2nd one because of the routine of first accelerating to speed and then thinking about where the next stop is.

Visually it's awesome. Why don't you fast forward when the train is at a stop and waiting? The wind noise is too much and takes away from the stunning visuals.

What does mean: "Why don't you fast forward when the train is at a stop and waiting?"?
It's very good how @lorirocks777 presents his video. Because even the long waiting time at the train stations is part of the journey.
A tip from me if you are that impatient: There is a key on the keyboard that you can use to jump forward in the video. It's the right arrow key.
And for the wind noise you can turn down the volume.
Was heißt: "Why don't you fast forward when the train is at a stop and waiting?"?
