Many LE agencies are abandoning the use of the loaded word "accident" when describing traffic crashes. I suggest the CHP adopt the same approach. Referring to incidents involving motor vehicle collisions as "accidents" confers a tone of innocence on drivers. And we all know that very few collisions, especially in crowded CA urban roadways, are "accidents." Crashes are almost always the result of irresponsible behavior on the part of one or more drivers. Tailgating, speeding, reckless maneuvers, lack of signal use, general aggressiveness and road rage are the big culprits. As are impaired driving. Lack of skill also adds to the mix, but should by no means be excused. Just because you don't know why braking in a corner is stupid doesn't make you a victim. It makes you an idiot driver just waiting to lose control of your vehicle.
So please CHP, let's stop using this term. Please use "crash" and "collision" instead. Or "traffic incident." Whatever, as long as the terminology doesn't instantly imply lack of culpability on the part of drivers. Drivers today need to accept MORE responsibility for their actions on the roads, not less. (And yes, I'm talking to you illegal cell phone texters, callers and generally distracted morAns on the road!!!)
