  • PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK ENFORCEMENT OPERATION - RESULTS
Today we conducted our pedestrian crosswalk enforcement operation in Bay Point on Willow Pass Road in Contra Costa County.
The purpose of this operation was to reduce the number of pedestrians struck by vehicles in crosswalks as well as to reduce the severity of crashes involving pedestrians by bringing attention, enforcement, & education to the area.
Our Officers issued 69 Citations during the operation & impounded 3 vehicles. Please yield for pedestrians in the crosswalk and obey all traffic laws. Thank You.

Reason being is because people just blindly walk out into traffic. Expecting vehicles to stop for them and thinking they have the right of way no matter what. Doesn't matter where you cross, but if you get hit, the motorist walks away if you cross illegally. Even in a crosswalk, if you don't have the signal saying to walk and you get hit, bye bye lawsuit, you ain't gettin a dime and the motorist walks way with you getting the ticket for jaywalking or improper use of signal.

It felt good watching this as I remember there were so many ignorant motorists (with attitudes) who just didn't care about pedestrians and the traffic rules. I lost count of how many times I came close to getting hit by vehicles when crossing the street in clearly marked crosswalks back in California.

I suggest not using the crosswalk then. Cross at least 50 meters away from it. Painted crosswalks are actually one of the most dangerous places for pedestrians and the most dangerous way to cross a road by a landslide. It's like a nerf gun vs. M60 comparison. The problem is the use of only paint to keep pedestrians safe. What you're supposed to do is indicated, but nothing is done to ensure people actually stop. This is why you'll never see paint alone used in a civilized nation like the Netherlands. They will have choke points and speed tables on the crossing

Shitty take. It's not the drivers not respecting pedestrians, it's the city. If they gave the slightest iota of a fuck about the safety of pedestrians, they wouldn't be relying on paint to protect them. They would add pinch points, a resting place and some sand barrel defenses. Except those cost money instead of making money off of risking the lives of people just trying to cross the road.

To catch these people crossing 2 lanes ahead, cops throw on sirens to take crazy turns and speed even closer...

    • @SKULLHOCKEY3
      @SKULLHOCKEY3 3 года назад +6

Kids dart across and back, people walk dogs that may be in front or behind them in the next lane or close you may not see, people could slip/trip and fall into another lane in front or behind them. While you may see one ped in the crosswalk, another may just be stepping off the curb entering the sidewalk you may not see. also its just too unsafe to have a car zip by at 50mph 5ft from you.
STATE LAW is once a pedestrian is in a cross walk, vehicles may not go through the cross walk until the pedestrian is out of the crosswalk (up the curb) on the other side. this is same in almost every state in the USA. One exception is if there is a pedestrian island in the middle, vehicles on the other side of the pedestrian Island may go through.

What was the violation for the truck at 1:49? He drove through the crosswalk when the pedestrian was leaving his half of the roadway, which is the federal guideline for crosswalk laws. In California the law is less explicit and says only that vehicles "shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway" and "shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of the vehicle or take any other action relating to the operation of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian." But that pedestrian was two lanes away from the truck and was entering the other half of the roadway. I hope he fought that citation.

That road appears to have an established median, or does that exception only apply to a road with a raised median?

The irony here is that in most of the clips, the police are crossing the same crosswalk when they go after the offending vehicle. Seriously though, it's good that they do this. I wish they would start going after drivers who don't signal where I'm at.

I know exactly where that is and no people will not stop when walking in that crosswalk.

Nice to see the police doing something about it I guess, but a better answer would be to not design terrible crosswalks that do nothing to protect their users. Slow the cars by using speed bumps and narrowing lanes, raise the crosswalk platform so that it is clear that the cars are entering territory intended for pedestrian use, and maybe even have a crosswalk signal installed that people can get ticketed for ignoring. All of that would be better than having a cop go and ticket people for ignoring a crosswalk that is easy to ignore.

I am in total agreement with the posted video but did not the CHP officer break the very law he/she was enforcing , at least twice?

Just remember; approaching a crosswalk does not give a pedestrian the right of way. The pedestrian only has right away once they are IN the crosswalk. Don’t race out into a crosswalk in front of a car. It’s incumbent upon the pedestrian to stop and look both ways and wait for oncoming traffic to pass. Little jerk college students where I live have been educated by the local police in this matter.😅

Failing to stop for pedestrians at the designated zebra crossing is a big problem in all countries..

Well it's not really a problem in the Netherlands because they don't rely on just paint to keep pedestrians "safe"
