It's not the over-the-top nostalgia that's wrong with the book. It's the tactless way it just references them for no reason other than fanservice; It doesn't develop anything in the story.
Yeah it’s full of nostalgic references, but so was Roger Rabbit and Wreck-It Ralph. It works within the context of the story, and the movie was a blast!
Yeah but I don't know if it were the reactions in the audience or that I am annoyed with all those 80s references from Stranger Things to Atomic Blonde and so many other shows and movies but I thought those were too many and, most importantly, too respectful, unlike all the references in, for instance, Lego Batman...
yes introverted guy they are in the movie haha, and no I don't have Battletoads 2 on Xbox. I did love the game back in the day though and the bloody Arcade version (also Battletoads & Double Dragon). and lol Technosis 909 same, one of the most nostalgic games and pause menu songs.
Just saw it today, they have a ton of stuff. I'm sure it went by so fast I missed 90% of it. Some of the best stuff is use of video game mechanics/rules they have to follow when in the Oasis..
An sionnach dearg if I can remember correctly I think that Double Toasted announced on the YT community that he was looking for other job opportunities
5% of people that talked about either they liked the movie or not so much 20% of people that missed girts 75% of people talking about what korey is wearing and dollar shave club btw i loved this movie
I enjoyed the CG, I enjoyed the action, I enjoyed the references and the video game references, and the acting was okay. But the only thing that didn't fully make me love the movie was the story. I don't know why, but I just don't like the whole evil corporation trying to take over the world and the small group of teens/kids trying to stop them and save the ones they love from them and stuff. I don't know, some parts of the movie and the adventures I liked, but the main story wasn't really for me. PS: TJ Miller, Meh
I agree. It was... Just something missing. I'll check it out again (Moviepass Boyz), but I could have done without the corporation, the weak love story, and with better acting.
Yeah. I also felt that the story was too basic. Very unplausible that a bunch of teens who games a lot would know how to run a half-trillion dollar business let alone how to make it benefit the world further rather than making things worse. The coporation character is also too much of an idiot to have been the CEO of it, no chance.
Michael Chan well the fact is the guy who died was looking for someone who was like him. And can understand his mistakes. And yea they are kids but they do got lawyers and that other guy who can advise them. Plus we are talking about video game nerds. One hacking feeds and who do mods. As for the CEO, he knew how to make money. Not play video games. And he did what other companies do. Employ people to get the work done. The experts.
I feel like too many people think that the 80's nostalgia is just for the sake of a current trend and has no point, but these same people do not understand this book was written before the 80's nostalgia trend started and that the 80's references make complete sense to the CONTEXT of this story. Halladay was a huge 80's nerd despite not being born in the 80's and made his contest based around that because he wanted his successor to be like him, kinda like Willy Wonka. So yeah, it's 80's but its 80's for a REASON, not just for views. Why NOT go all out in this futuristic VR world?? Can't you people let people have FUN?? I'm with Korey on this one.
Watchmen (the directors cut) was a masterpiece. Just compare it to Jurassic Park, Spielberg completely changed the movie from the book and it was still phenomenal.
Question. Why is it okay for people to cheer mindless references in a movie, but not mindless action sequences? At least the action scenes could theoretically be original, references are inherently derivative.
I'm working on my review right now. And thinking more about it I had a fun time but I'm not blown away by it. U strip all the nostalgia and 80s references away u have a empty shell painted by Steven Spielberg. And I guess that's ok.
Purple Film so you’re saying there’s no struggle? No Oasis? No problem with a corporation attempting to run the virtual world? No motivation behind the characters? No drastic difference between the oasis and the real world?
Glad I'm not the only one, im impressed with the cgi and the amount of characters they got but never got attached to any of the characters at all. And omg the dialogue whenever they're in the real world and their acting is really bad! Also the romance has no chemistry whatsoever. I still liked the movie but no where near as much as other do.
Shobin Drogan yes I actually didn't mind the acting. I thought it was pretty solid. But I definitely agree with everything u said tho. U should check out my review.
Make a wish! Hold your breath... Count to three. Come with me... and you'll be, in a world of NO imagination! Take a look, and you'll see copyrighted works of others imaginations.
George Lucas gets shit for the prequels but people are fine with Steven just putting as much copyrighted material in as possible. How do you go from Jaws, Jurassic Park and E.T to this fake bullshit?
Something this movie does right is change the context of the challenges from the novel. The challenges in the book are about Wade being rewarded for knowing a lot about pop-culture and video games. The movie makes the challenges more introspective, exploring Halliday's psyche, personal regrets, and alienation. Also, in the book, the romance did take longer to bloom, but it also involves some severe stalker behavior and book-Wade is a smarmy, entitled creep.
Is it just me, or is this becoming the Corey show? Don’t get me wrong, I think Corey is hilarious and I always look forward to his take on a film. There’s no other reviewer that I’ve seen that brings the comedy like he does. But if I would criticize the show, I miss hearing Martin. And now that they have even more people on the shows, they need to balance the time each person gets to state their opinions. Corey hogs the platform sometimes.
When I read the book I didn’t really clock how much side stuff on the 80s they really had and now I’m thinking of there are at least 4 instances of Ernie writing out full scenes from movies and tv shows and loads of random video game histories and trying to explain the look of video games in the oasis. Bet he was upset when Speilburg didn’t let him have a full Parzival War Games in the movie.
clearspira no no. All cars were like that. Remember they were imported from Ireland, and had to comply to the US standards. Something something national speed limit 55
i WAAASSS about to deal with my life, work on some commissions, maybe feed myself...then i get a DT update...time to roll a joint and laugh for half an hour
Just got back from seeing it in RPX. It had some Roller-Coaster fun moments, but I'm surprised Spielberg didn't make the dystopian society feel more important. I didn't see anyone even slightly concerned that Virtual Reality has taken over. It seemed like every single person was just wanting the damn Easter Egg. The 2 Scenes that were worth the Price of Admission were the insane Race near the beginning with the Akira bike. It was shot very well for an animated sequence. ALSO... without spoiling... a certain CLASSIC MOVIE that is featured as a Level. Holy Shit, that was insane seeing it on the big screen. The MUSIC and all. It even had that grainy 70's look still but with characters interacting with the Movie Set. I would give it a Matinee. I wanted it to be a Full Price. I saw it with 2 friends tonight. All of us grew up on all the games featured. 1 of my friends REALLY HATED IT, the one I expected to like it the most... during the movie he was saying "Kill Me". He even gave it a "1/10" after haha.
For a movie that drowns itself in references, to include the obscure and Anime, I found myself wishing that there had been more heavy hitters in the final battle. There should have been at least three or four other people in that literal SEA OF GAMERS who'd also been playing long enough to have access to special super characters or commissions. Maybe a Voltron or a Megazord or a Jaeger. After all...that would have been the time to use it. I myself found myself REALLY hoping for a Big O, as THAT would have been amazing to see visualized on the big screen. He's made for the big fights after all and would have made far more sense than the Iron Giant...................but I knew in all reality that it wasn't going to happen. The Big O was a long shot if ever there was one. But with all of that Spielberg money, you'd think they could have bought at least a few more heavy-hitter properties for the war scene.
32:42 I definitely had fun! Yeah there are problems with the film, but this is one of those movies that wants you to turn your brain off and embrace the ride~
These ads are getting ridiculous. I don't pay all this money to see all these ads. I feel like I'm not getting my money's worth... oh wait. This is youtube. Nevermind.
Great review. Great movie. The changes didn't bother me, I thought they made for a more dramatic film. Olivia Cooke was my fav part of the movie. lol @ spaghetti sauce on her eye
I honestly liked the movie more than the book since the book has some issues and I honestly don't mind all of the changes to the plot and characters, not a perfect movie but it's more a improvement from the book.
Remember when there was a set of parody movies that were nothing but references that everyone hated it, made by two dudes whom Korey considered his arch enemies.
29:56-29:58: I don't know about that. People could cry for the dumbest reasons. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody actually cried because of his performance.
Everybody complaining about how this movie is overblown with references, no, Family Guy overdoes it with the references, Jason Freidberg and Aaron Seltzer/Marlon Wayans make movies that are nothing but references. At least with Ready Player One, some references are quick and blink if you miss it, with Family Guy, Seltzerberg and Marlon Wayans it's nothing but poor recreations of the things they reference and do it for the sake of referencing it. Also, I'm surprised y'all didn't mention TJ Miller as i-R0k but then again that probably would've brought Goodwin's rating down a bit.
DT can review a goddamn lipstick for all I care, I'm watching it. And I believe most of their fans are the same. We are all here because of them not just the movie they are reviewing.
Can somebody explain to me why they drove the van to pick up Artemis after she escaped from the corporation. All it did was let the bad guys know they're location. She was of no use then since her character in oasis died, the bad guy had no idea where she was, if she just went into some random building she would have been safe. Driving the van to her was pointless
The two things I hate the most in theaters... D-Box Motion seats & 3D. Ready Player One deserves to be viewed in the biggest & loudest theater possible, preferably an Imax theater. I'm never using D-Box again because it just feels like someone is kicking your chair. The theater I went to had such a nice sound system that I felt the vibrations from my immobile seat alone. 3D movies need to die and rot in a grave. Imax is where it's at baby, but I really don't like that digitally transferred shit... I agree with Christopher Nolan to a point... go back to film (especially for legit Imax). I love watching Nolan''s movies in Imax because he truly knows how to utilize it... M:I - Ghost Protocol took a page from Nolan's book, and they succeed.
I thought it was just me, but I almost pressed imaginary pause and rewind buttons. I found the book (only made it 1/3 of the way through) slow going, but the movie was fun. I just wanted more time in the Oasis. Of course, that is a 180 from the really insistent message at the end of the movie, but Oasis was just more fun than a dystopia.
you should try going oldschool with a double edged safety razor. Single blade razors are so much better for your skin then modern multiplade catridge razors.
This has to be one my favorite movies reviews simply because the energy lol. I have been coming back to watch this XD. Thanks for the eve lasting memories.
was getting into it but for a bout 20mins or so it lost me (felt slow about an hour in) then it picked up again, people I went with didn't feel same way. It was worth seeing at the cinema.
24:24 Concerning the birth mark: We are old enough to be over that, but actual high school aged kids, they're assholes. We were assholes. Kids are cruel. I could see where she could have a form of body dysmorphia brought about by the ptsd of being bullied.
......MAAAAAAN I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD'VE PARTNERED UP WITH DOLLA SHAVE CLIQ BEFORE I FOUND THE SOLUTION. I couldn't shave without getting hair bumps. For years I was a black man tormented with a pizza face. Those days are long gone thanks to clippers and blue aqua velvet. I would love to give this a try but......I'm terrified to go back to razors.
It felt like a near miss opportunity to make a great movie. A little punch up wouldn’t kill anyone. T.J. Miller delivers the first laugh way too late, and he feels out of place as the only real nerd. H could have been funny. The rest of the team is introduced out of nowhere, when they easily could have been legends of the Oasis in their own ways. The main character is the best man for the job in exposition only. The challenge felt easy too. The sixers were not the endless horde and daunting force they could have been.
Watchmen is a good example of why heavy deviation AWAY from the book doesn't work. the stuff cut for time like Night Owl's book, and the comic and the space monster ext. is the soul purpose that book works. it's how the world of Watchmen becomes interesting. the film replaced that with ultra-violence and that's why it was so flat. where adaption work the best is when a script writer and director work smart. LotR, Spiderwick Chronicles (it might be a forgettable movie, but the translation from book to screen was perfect) Jessica Jones, ext. sounds like this gets a pass cuz Spielberg is important. that's not really much to go on. what's next Francis Ford Coppola gets the film rights to a NYT best seller set in the 70's?
This book was stupid from start to finish. The first thing it wanted me to buy was that poor people would stack mobile homes on top of each other for some reason. With all of our land area here in the states, what's the point of that? (other than to make a cool looking cover)
Kory's focusing on the Nostalgia but I've always cared about how awesome the Vr is. Ever since I played PSVR for the first time in Best Buy I've been hooked.
To me this a love letter to geek/nerd culture in general. There were references to overwatch and the modern teenage mutant ninja turtles (even if there were an 80's property first). The movie made it even clear that anything goes in this world, from the Halo Spartans fighting giant robots, to the delorean (obviously from Back to the Future) outrunning King Kong from the 1933 film. And the film also made it clear that reality is more important than our fantasies; that it's good to interact with real people. The story was ambitious even with it faults, the characters were enjoyable and had good actors back them up. The visuals ranged from somewhat jarring to beautifully rendered like (hopefully intentionally so) really good videogame graphics. The pacing was just about right, and the main character at least a decent arc of becoming a more mature person at the end. This movie wasn't a remake, unnessecary sequel, or a rebootquel. This a good full price movie for me!
CG in an of itself never is the problem. The problem is bad CG or bad blending between live action actors and CG environments. Neither seem to be the case here.
This movie is an advertisement for the DVD, where you CAN pause it to catch all the stuff flying by.
Oh look! Korey is dressed as Danny Glover in Gone Fishin'.
Dragon Skunk good one lol
Dragon Skunk ROFL
🤣
He even got the white hairs in his beard...
Dragon Skunk hilarious . Or Walter Matthau in grumpy old men.
Why corey remind me if the bus driver from sky high ?
introverted guy lmao
Hahaha
“Nostalgia is a term people use to dismiss someone else’s passion.”-Christopher Nolan
Korey's about to make the 80's great again
2KooL Reviews true.
I really miss that Token white guy.
yeah, me too
What happened to him why did he leave?
Geoff Brown Heard he left to focus on his career in marketing
He died
youscrewber Really?
Dollar shave club has invaded all of my favorite RUclips channels
BIGBDABO$$ The bad part? The razors aren't good. I used them and got three cuts on my face. They are a dollar, because they are cheap in quality.
Daniel Silva it’s bullshit that’s why I just buy usually the expensive kind.
*"Shit. Shower. Shave."*
Yeah but, what about those one wipe charlies?
Dollar Shave Club brings, to your house, to YOU...
GameFly, too.
BRUH! Iron giant Vs Mecha Godzilla... Gundam Vs Mecha Godzilla!!! 😁😆😆 This film is definitely a Full Price for me.
I jus saw it maaaaaaaaan when that Gundam came out i jumped out my seat
slimmike56 that fight scene was amazing. And as a Street fighter fan, I was quite happy
Korey looks like Stevie Wonder 😂😂😂
It's not the over-the-top nostalgia that's wrong with the book. It's the tactless way it just references them for no reason other than fanservice; It doesn't develop anything in the story.
Korey's entire outfit looks like it cost 80 cents
lol 80 cents for that whole outfit? Thats a steal.
Since when did Gerodi Laforge get in this channel?
Dollar Shave Club brings to your house, TO YOU!
Yeah it’s full of nostalgic references, but so was Roger Rabbit and Wreck-It Ralph. It works within the context of the story, and the movie was a blast!
Trey Wreck it Ralph handles its nostalgia references way better then ready player one.
Purple Film Cool bro, that’s your opinion and it’s cool that you feel that way!
Yeah but I don't know if it were the reactions in the audience or that I am annoyed with all those 80s references from Stranger Things to Atomic Blonde and so many other shows and movies but I thought those were too many and, most importantly, too respectful, unlike all the references in, for instance, Lego Batman...
But most of Wreck it Ralph was spent in candy ass world. Here at least there is lots to see.
spaceboy2095
Then why did you go see it?
I'll admit... I have to see this in the theater. BATTLETOADS and DUKE NUKEM in a Steven Spielberg film? YES I have to.
Mark Hazleton didn't know battletoads were in it are you serious ?
You got battletoads 2 on xbox ?
Love me sum Battletoads. One of my top 5 games from any system.
yes introverted guy they are in the movie haha, and no I don't have Battletoads 2 on Xbox. I did love the game back in the day though and the bloody Arcade version (also Battletoads & Double Dragon). and lol Technosis 909 same, one of the most nostalgic games and pause menu songs.

btw i loved this movie

I know Speilberg us doing more serious fare now but I'm so glad he decided do this for the fandom.
Korey dressed like Marty McFly Jr. from Back to the Future II. Hilarious! LOL! =)
This intro was so funny 😂 I love watching this show.

No, that's not what the movie is about. people should give Steven Spielberg more credit.

tashaem1 luckily all the action scenes are fantastic
It's not mindless. It's part of the movie.

THIS comment should be a main pull quote for this film
Did you even see the movie? The copy-written characters are bout 80% in the background or on screen for a few seconds.
Something this movie does right is change the context of the challenges from the novel. The challenges in the book are about Wade being rewarded for knowing a lot about pop-culture and video games.
31:00 On Halliday's childhood room at the end of the film there's a record sleeve for 2112 tacked on the wall in the background. Best RUSH album imo~
I feel like "Ready player one" like the idea of the book would make a good black mirror episode 🤔
Start of review around 3:30
What kind of sunglasses is korey wearing??

you should try going oldschool with a double edged safety razor. Single blade razors are so much better for your skin then modern multiplade catridge razors.
26:50 Isn't it established in the book that they can work and go to school there as well?
You guys rock, when you enjoy a dt movie review more than the movie it self.
This has to be one my favorite movies reviews simply because the energy lol. I have been coming back to watch this XD. Thanks for the eve lasting memories.
This was one of the most entertaining reviews XD I dont say it enough, but thank you Korey
Korey you are the man
I might see this. Didn’t look too good from the trailers but now I’m interested.
was getting into it but for a bout 20mins or so it lost me (felt slow about an hour in) then it picked up again, people I went with didn't feel same way. It was worth seeing at the cinema.
You guys should get Angry Joe on the show if you live in Austin.
RP1 was more of a love letter to John Hughes than Speilberg.
I'm not watching this quite yet, but I had to come in here when I saw the thumbnail bc I laughed for a good minute at Korey's getup.
24:24 Concerning the birth mark: We are old enough to be over that, but actual high school aged kids, they're assholes. We were assholes. Kids are cruel. I could see where she could have a form of body dysmorphia brought about by the ptsd of being bullied.
3:26 - Highlight of the podcast for me - "ALL THOSE GREAT THAANGS"
......MAAAAAAN I WISH YOU GUYS WOULD'VE PARTNERED UP WITH DOLLA SHAVE CLIQ BEFORE I FOUND THE SOLUTION. I couldn't shave without getting hair bumps. For years I was a black man tormented with a pizza face. Those days are long gone thanks to clippers and blue aqua velvet. I would love to give this a try but......I'm terrified to go back to razors.
Love you're outfit, it's nice when you guys put on some sought of costumes
Pagemaster meets Tron meets Willy Wonka.
This book was stupid from start to finish. The first thing it wanted me to buy was that poor people would stack mobile homes on top of each other for some reason. With all of our land area here in the states, what's the point of that? (other than to make a cool looking cover)
Spielberg dropped Robocolypse to do this movie. Robocolypse is another thrilling sci-fi read.
"B* tch, shutcho ass up! You priddy as hail!" Lmao
im hoping the dollar shave club advert lives up to the loot crate one. I miss it lol
..where did u get those silver visor sun glasses?..those are slick
Kory's focusing on the Nostalgia but I've always cared about how awesome the Vr is. Ever since I played PSVR for the first time in Best Buy I've been hooked.
Not enough ads.
*nothing but respect
*Not enough Toasty Goodness..*
What kind of sunglasses are those
I could only stand the book for a few chapters, hopefully this one does it better. Is the 3d version any good?
Mendelsohn playing Danny in Bloodline is probably his defining role (great villain)
RP1 yes was different from the book but the movie was still awesome!! LOVED it!
This movie was basically Blade Runner 2049 meets Wreck it Ralph
