    Now that I've owned my Ferrari 458 for over a year I felt it was time to write my Ferrari 458 buyers guide. I also wanted to make this video to accompany the book to help show some of the items in video as opposed to pictures. This guide is meant to help educate you as a potential buyer of what to look for, and how to save some money. Ultimately the goal is to make sure you buy the car that will meet your goals.

    Hey Dan, the issue with the Getrag transmissions is due to one or both speed sensors failing. The transmission itself is very robust. The 458 and FF suffered much less speed sensor failure then the California did, and its likely due to heat. What happens is the odd or even speed sensor fails and you lose odd or even gears. Gearbox replacement is not required anymore as some dealers have mechanics trained to replace the speed sensors for a fraction of the cost of gearbox replacement, however be sure to inquire if your dealer has a mechanic trained to replace the sensors because if they don’t it will cost 30k + to replace the gearbox where sensor replacement is 10k or less. Again it’s a larger issue with 2014 and older californias. The issue all but disappeared with 2015 and newer cars.

    Carbon fibre driver zone and carbon buckets has a huge impact on value on 458's in the UK, typically adds around £10,000-£15,000 to the value and to be honest the carbon and alcantera really sets the interior off nicely in a 458, a base car with no carbon and even worse no carbon LED wheel have much lower values in the UK.

For some strange reason, he was under the impression it needed the Michelin TRX's that were on the earlier Mondials and very expensive to replace. All it needed was a regular set of 16" Bridgestones and it was good to go. Weird. Two of the original tires actually split apart on the tire machine during dismounting.

    Disagree about carbon fiber not impacting price, and the LED wheel DEFINITELY impacts price. Massively. Whenever you see a dirt cheap 458 chances are, no LED wheel. Same with seats - people will definitely pay more for CF seats, they are way more desirable than Daytona’s or base seats. Rear parking sensors and camera both increase. Lifter you’re right. Thing is when you add all these things up it creates “the perfect spec” IE a heavy spec car for just a bit more than the regular specs, which many buyers will pay a premium for. Headlights = AFS btw and yes no real $ impact. Black interior or red interior a plus. Tan, not so much. Exterior color you’re totally right, has a direct impact.

      I do agree, before I bought my 09 430, I was looking at a couple of 2010 458’s and cars without the LED wheel and had the stock seats were 10K or more less and that was before bargaining. The cars in red with the Daytona seats and LED wheels seemed to be on the market for less time and owners didn’t want to budge on price. I do think the rear camera is a major thing for many people also, as you state, because you can’t really change the radio head unit out easily like previous generation models to add a 3rd party camera, so adding the rear camera later to a 458 is a major cost. One you have a rear camera in a car with terrible rear visibility, you really can’t live without it, especially if you have kids.
      Also much of your advise here is good for all modern super cars. The tires thing is very important, old tires are a death trap waiting to happen. They get hard and drive like your on ice. If your tires are 5 years or older, negotiate to get new ones in the deal or change then out before you drive the car. We all remember Paul Walker.

    The Spider has some very undesirable traits in my opinion, sure it looks great top up or down but the body flex/twist with the roof down is surprisingly bad and with the top up I hear creaks/movement particularly at low speeds such as in parking lots or when turning into driveways. The dealer has addressed this but it’s one of those things that is more of a consequence of design rather than an issue that they can remedy. I had a chance to test a Mclaren 650S spider several years ago and roof down that car felt like what I wish the Ferrari did, granite solid.... that carbon tub isn’t for nothing. Otherwise my only 458 complaint is valved exhaust when it crosses over the bypass mode at like 3k rpm is super annoying but easily changed and I personally think the throttle is jumpy and could be more linear and easier to modulate at low speeds

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 3 года назад

      While I very much agree that the 458 Spider is way too flexy to be really fun, I'm surprised about the 650S comment. Of all the mid engined exotics I have driven, none have felt so numb and disengaged as the 650S. On top of that, the lag of the engine is simply not something you can get used to. The 720S, 675 and so on, are much better in the communication department, but the McLarens still feel somewhat numb - and while a 488, Pista and F8 has virtually zero lag, the McLarens still suffer greatly from it.
      The great news from Ferrari is that the 488 Spider virtually got rid of the flex.

    I believe carbon ceramic rotors generally do not change thickness (unlike steel rotors) but rather their wear is measured in one of 2 ways:
    1. Rotor Weight
    2. Rotor density
    I enjoy your content. Keep it coming.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 3 года назад

      It really depends. On the most modern type CCST rotors, all you can do is look and feel. No weighing, no thickness, no mass. The old school Brembo CCM rotors are a bit different. You can both measure them and weigh them.

    Good summary on the 458! 👍
    My experience is, that the Michelin Pilot Sport tyres are excellent, on the 458 as well as for several years on my Porsche 997. Go for them!
    When I bought the 458 spider I was so in love with the car that I didn't see that the leather on the doorboards was slightly coming up in bubbles. Just on the corners of the arm rests both on the driver's and the passenger's side. I don't know how this came to happen and it has happened to no other 458 I heard of. The car has not been exposed to big heat as far as I know.
    I had to have the leather replaced. Unfortunately the dealer said it was not covered by the "approved" for whatever reason. It cost me 1,600 EUR. Buyers should check out the leather on the doorboards.
    The Daytona seats are awesome. But I seem to emery the outside hump of the driver's seat with my buttocks in jeans so the black leather became white. I had to have it repaired already. It might be a good advice to viewers to cover that hump (and on the passenger's side) with a smooth cloth while getting in and out of the car.
    Dan, I write a lot here. I don't want to steal the show from you. If I come across as a smart ass just delete it, tell me and I shut up.
    Kind Regards
    Michael

    The problem with the CCM rotors are the rough surface. Once they get used on race track, the rough surface eats up the pads very fast. So the thickness alone is not telling enough about the health of the rotors. The problem is the old ceramic brake technology Ferrari is using. CCB rotors on the other hand have mirror like much smoother, less friction surface. They are used by Porsche, BMW, Mercedes. Been there, done that.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  4 года назад

      Ok

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X 3 года назад

      There's more to it. I use Surface Transforms rotors on my 488 and Pista. The technology used by them, and thus BMW is not called CCB, but actually CCST. It is not the same technology used by Porsche - PCCB simply stands for Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes and it tells little about the technology used. While they are newer technology than the Brembo discs, they are still a matrix style disc with chopped fibers - not continuous strand fibers as used in CCST brakes. Porsche brakes are still better than the old CCM Brembo rotors, but they do not last nowhere near as long as the CCST discs used by BMW, Mercedes, Koenigsegg, McLaren GT4, Tesla and just about every winning Porsche Cup and Ferrari Challenge or GT3 team out there. With that said, what kills pads, is heat. Even with the CCST discs which has a glass like surface, a set of OE 488/Pista pads only last three 2 hour sessions. They last a bit longer, but still nothing to write home about. A weekend on Spa of 1½ days kills a set of pads with CCM rotors, and 2 days kills them with CCST discs, that's just how the OE pads are. If you want to increase pad life, you can A: run Pagid RSC2 which are still nice for the street, or you can go full race and run RSL1 pads. The latter will last over a season for a 488 that is tracked twice per month, and that's considering a 7 month season.
      A very interesting thing about the CCST disc is their ability to run cooler. My 488 run in the 480 degree C range on my local track when measured at the pit entrance lane. With CCST it run about 360 C. Add to that the much greater ability to modulate power, as well as much quieter and smoother brake operation.
      The discs on a Porsche GT3RS with OE PCCB vs CCST discs still run about 70-80 degrees C hotter, and the Porsche discs are not hard enough to handle a pad compound like Pagids RSL1.
      Lastly the interesting thing about CCST discs is their ability to be resurfaced. Yes initial price is similar to a set of Brembo discs purchased from Eurospares or Ricambi etc. About 12000 Euro incl. VAT. But what's really interesting is the fact that once they are worn, you can get a full set resurfaced for 1500 Euro and that can be done four times. I like many things about Ferrari, but their brakes is an overpriced joke.

    Some of that information is not true. There is almost no relationship between price and color combination, the two cheapest cars on the market are red and tan. The whites and tans/reds are all over the market in price. It's hard to assume a color price relationship.

      You have got to be joking!
      You do realize he does this for a living, right? So you're asking to get his service for free. Want free advise, join us on Ferrarichat. You may get the answers you want, you may not. But you need to understand that helping people with these things are an actual business. If you're serious about trading your car and want it done right, I'm sure it had been a good deal to get someone to help you at a minor cost. But apparently you were too cheap to pay for getting things done right.
      What did he want? 35000 usd? No? Okay...

    Even with the money I don't think I'd ever be in the market for an exotic. I think I'd end up getting a heap of older jalanese cars from the 70s and 80s. I struggle to park my 370Z in parking lots without worrying about someone dinging it. Can't imagine parking and enjoying a meal with a ferrari without getting anxious over it haha.
