To anyone who’s wondering: the reason the mask is so long was that it would be filled with different spices that would sent and “filter” the air that would go through the mask, so that the doctor wouldn’t be infected. The cane was also used to that the doctor didn’t have to touch the patient

The scariest thing to me about the doctors is that they don't say anything to the sick. They just look at them. Then "put them to sleep."

Wrong. What the retired plague doctor sniffed and ate was most likely lavender or some other herb, because back then it was widely believed that the plague came from bad smells. They wore the beaked masks because they put said spices into them so they would breathe in good smells, which made them feel like they couldn't get the plague. Their clothes were also covered in wax because it was believed that the plague would stick to rough surfaces.

actually the reason it was so dangerous in the old times is cause we never had anti-biotics back in the day, now the plauge can be cured with antibiotics but it doesnt mean it is to be taken lightly. Its still a dangerous virus.

Fellinux That is incorrect. The beak wasn't intended to be alongside with the costume. It played a big part with helping the Plague Docters. As they thought anyways. The beak never met to be a beak. It was used for Herbs, Flowers, and other greens to keep them healthy while inside the costume. And if you haven't known. Their costume was waxed so that no "Rotten Air" was inside their coat.
Fellinux Yes, I don't doubt you have. Yet, Plague Docters have a lot of genres they could fit into. They are also well known within the genre of Creepy Pasta. So therefore, you may have heard about people saying it was intended to be. But I am not saying that you do not agree with me, but I do suggest looking up why Plague Docters have beaks. Also, if you watch this clip once more, the main characters says he "wants to help people." In my opinion I don't think he would wear the beak if he wanted to help. Also, look at the clip once again. The point when the Plague Docter was infected with the disease he ran to his bathroom opened his mask up and received Herbs within his mask. Indicating he has Herbs in his beak. Supporting my earlier comment.
Fellinux well this has narrowed down to the shape of beaks and the tone of creepy. Yes you may be right. Actually I agree with you. The pointy masks where made like that. And rounded was also made like that. But it depends on the creator. The creator of the mask is using a different material then what other people use to create masks. I beleave this is the reason. And If I am wrong, which is a possibility, then that concludes this confusion.

Well, a common belief at the time was that the plague was being spread by birds. (We now know that rats and fleas were responsible for spreading the Black Death.) The Doctors may have thought that dressing up in a bird-like gas mask,the plague would be transferred from the patient to the garment. This beak piece was also filled with Vinegar,sweet oils,and other strong-smelling chemicals to mask the stench of death and unburied bodies.

They didn't have those chemicals in their hands like that. "Scientists" only carried those ingredients. But remember, Plague Doctors where just ordinary people who decided to help. Also some where normal doctors. No citizen would carry those ingredients, as I explained earlier. So therefore, they put their picked herbs inside a compartment with the mask. The mask started to grow to a thing. It came to the point it had to look like a beak. And yes, half of your part is correct. They had masks to hide the smell of death and the dead. But It wasn't chemicals. The people thought the disease was carried through air. This is why the plague doctor suits was waxed and they where completely covered. To resist the air from entering their suits. In this clip, it explains indirectly that plague doctors had their sticks/poles to examine their patients. Also, to keep away patients when they try to attack the doctor. This is my comeback. Thank you for reading.
I'd just like to point out a few inaccuracies:
Yes, the plague doctors were hired during the black death, mid 14th century, hOWever, the iconic beak mask and costume was only invented by Charles de l'Orme, who lived in the late 16th century. He invented the costume for himself and used it first in 1619.
Furthermore, the mask would have been made of leather, and it was only 6 inches long, it did not look that ridiculously huge.

I was a plague doctor for Halloween last year and I'm doing it again this year, If you do it right you can really creep people out, it's not so much a SCARY costume but more a eery and creepy one. I like that better.

I have to admit that this individuals were pretty brave and with good feelings for helping the community in such situation of chaos
This is probably one of the best live-action short films I've seen. It's very well made and does a lot in the little time it has. It gave me a lot of feels, and I teared up at the end.
This is so true, even of modern doctors & other medical professions today. That those who volunteer to care for the sick during an epidemic or pandemic get sick even after certain precautions are observed. Its what makes their profession respectable & commendable.

@@fuzzhg6848 They certainly had masks in that time, however they looked very crude and, like the other commenter said, the bird design took a couple of centuries to come about. There was still a "beak", but it was really just a basic, skinny cone to stuff herbs into. Google "real plague doctor mask" and you'll be able to see for yourself.

It's so sad because that was what it was like back then. A plague doctor would try to heal someone and have to quarantine themselves for a certain amount of time before going back out to try cure someone else. Until one gets the disease as well and is visited by another plague doctor who must cure them instead. It sort of goes around in a circle. It teaches a good lesson about the plague and plague doctors and how they are misunderstood as ringers I death. Yes, they sort of are because if they are unable to heal someone, they put them out of their misery and try to stop the disease spreading. It is also because they were present during the black death, wore black symbolizing death and even wore raven-like masks in which ravens are symbolized with death too. A beautiful, educational yet tragic film. Well done guys!!

The peak on a plague doctor's mask was roughly 6 inches not 3 meters, the mask in this video is so inaccurate that it slightly ruins it for me, i had to pause it after he answered the door because it was so ridiculous, i don't even know how he'll get that thing in the damn door, they fucked up the costume.. they had one job!

The iconic plague doctor costume worn here first appeared in the 17th century. In the 14th century, very little protection was worn at all.
I’d be so thankful to see one of those Plague Doctors if I was there back in the day, just knowing they might have the cure.

Sourim I really forgot a lot about the plague doctor but I know that’s not true there wasn’t a cure for it how th eplague ended was becuase of quarantine that’s some I didn’t forget

This actually scared me a lot, especially after COVID, and now I am ill with some kind of infection, just very painful and wet and deep disgusting phlemby coughing, second week now and temperature down so this will not kill me, such a fine line between an unpleasant couple of weeks and a deadly virus, and wow I feel for our ancestors who worried they had been evil and that they and their families were being punished!
